Cut Chemist has been on my list since the day I started this podcast, so getting him on for Episode 85 was a real full-circle moment. He's someone whose records genuinely shaped how I dig and how I think about putting samples together, and across this conversation he traces the whole arc — from kicking along to a Bobby Darin concert in the womb, to a McDonald's straw on a snare drum, to Star Wars soundtracks, to the moment hip hop landed for him in 1983.We get deep into the Hollywood scene that raised him, the Rhino Records parking-lot quarter bins where he and his friends amassed beats nobody had touched, and the Jungle Brothers album that made him realise he could make "a record made out of records."From Unity Committee into Jurassic 5, sharing the production chair with Nu-Mark, the all-45s leap into Brain Freeze with DJ Shadow, the solo tightrope of The Audience's Listening, and right up to his candlelit listening parties now — this one's a masterclass in following the unfamiliar. It's long, it's nerdy in all the right places, and I couldn't have asked for more from a guest who's influenced me this much.In this episode we cover:His earliest musical memories — parents, live drums, Carpenters and a deep sci-fi soundtrack obsessionDiscovering hip hop in 1983 via KDAY, breakdancing, graffiti and the elements one at a timePublic Enemy, Bomb Squad and why Main Source is his production templateThe Jungle Brothers album that turned him into a samplerLearning gear the hard way — reel-to-reel, Roland S10, MPC, the Pro Tools learning curveForming Jurassic 5 out of Unity Committee, and the east-coast heart in a west-coast cityPre-internet sample sleuthing and the legendary Rhino Records quarter binsFirst DJ gigs at 15, learning to cut, and the up-and-down fader style that became his ownQbert and the 1996 X-Men vs Scratch Pickles battleA digging philosophy: is the juice worth the squeeze?Sharing production with Nu-Mark, building Lesson 6, and breaking in Europe with Mr FormatThe Rare Equations mix, the Number Song remix and the all-45s origins of Brain FreezeOzomatli, Brazilian and African digging, and constructing a set like a compositionThe Audience's Listening at 20, The Garden in Brazil, and the Italy trip that changed everythingThe Good Life Cafe education and record shopping with Biz MarkieStable Sound, the Bandcamp subscription, and his candlelit psychedelic sound bathsOn Keb Darge, on Edan, and the Expert of None shows coming next

Most Bible studies teach people to understand a passage. Scripture deep dives train leaders to see patterns, solve problems, and follow the way of Jesus in real life. In this episode, Chuck Wood, Dave Miller, and Mark unpack why reading large chunks of Scripture together can shift paradigms faster than another polished teaching session. June, 1, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 143 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday morning show, Alex Kozora and I get right into discussing it being June 1st and how there is a lot of buzz surrounding the Cleveland Browns possibly trading away DE Myles Garrett soon. On the heels of there being a lot of talk about the 55 total touches per game stat that new Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike McCarthy is big on, Alex and I take a deep dive into the history and significance of that statistic as it relates to his own career. Alex and I wonder if there really should be a ton made about that stat overall and especially when it comes to the 2026 season. Alex recently wrote about four offensive stats that the Steelers must improve in 2026, so we spend some time going over each of those that he highlighted and why. The Steelers will hold their annual mandatory minicamp this week, so Alex and I go over a few key things to look for during the upcoming practice sessions. We discuss whether we should expect Steelers CB Joey Porter Jr. to do much of anything this week and if it will be a true sign that a training camp hold-in might be on the horizon. This 66-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap above, and we make sure to answer a few listener emails we have received to close out this show. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. We are back! After a month-long break to release our special Deep Dive series, we return to our regular weekly format to analyse the ongoing madness of the world. And unfortunately, the insanity has not slowed down. The episode kicks off in the Baltic Sea, where Germany has completely lost its collective mind over a stranded humpback whale. We break down why society is so eager to project its emotional energy onto a single animal while actively ignoring the infinitely more complex, systemic human suffering around the globe. From there, our conversation shifts to the terrifying geopolitical reality of the ongoing US-Iran-Israel conflict. We unpack the illusion of power, exploring why the United States' massive military budget is proving completely ineffective at winning asymmetric wars or imposing its will in the Middle East. We also dive into the recent nuclear threats and ceasefires, offering an analysis of Trump's dystopian threat to "wipe out a civilisation," the conflicting ceasefire agreements, and Israel's massive strike on Lebanon designed to disrupt the peace. We then question whether the White House is playing 4D chess or just creating total chaos, examining how the erratic opening and closing of the Strait of Hormuz and JD Vance's failed diplomatic mission to Pakistan prove that the current administration has absolutely no coherent strategy. Finally, we tackle Europe's "Stockholm Syndrome." Despite Viktor Orbán finally losing power in Hungary, European leadership remains utterly visionless, leaving us to wonder why leaders like Friedrich Merz are condemning Iran while remaining entirely beholden to the United States.Thank you to everyone who tuned in for our Deep Dives. It is great to be back analysing the weekly news cycle with you all! This podcast is an individual project between us, Dario Hasenstab and Balder Hageraats. 80s/90s Comedy/Music/Satire Icon Julie Brown joins us and prepare to mop up some tea! Just exactly how did Julie Brown become an MTV trend setter? She made fun of the videos. Fans loved it and the frenzy gave rise to Julie's very own show, Just Say Julie. We head back to an innocent age when it was still ridiculously ludicrous for the homecoming queen to have a gun. Then we explore the inspiration for Julie's first film, Earth Girls Are Easy. Getting it made, however, was difficult. Julie starred with Gina Davis, Jeff Goldblum and Jim Carrey and the film launched the music videos, Cause I'm A Blonde and I Like ‘Em Big And Stupid. Next, inspired by the outrageous stories she'd hear from friends who had worked with Madonna, Julie parodied Madonna's self absorbed doc-noir, Truth Or Dare, with Medusa: Dare To Be Truthful. We talk about Attack Of The 5'2” Women, with a cameo by our own Lisa Arch, in which Julie roasts headline hogs Tanya Harding and Lorena Bobbitt and we compare notes on 100 Things To Do Before High School on which Julie wrote and Lisa played Principal Hader. And finally, we unleash a rousing round of IMDB Roulette where the wheel stops at Happy Days, The Jeffersons, Newhart, Laverne and Shirley, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Shakes The Clown, The Middle and Camp Rock. Plus, Weezy and Lisa are recommending and discussing Trust Me: The False Prophet on Netflix. We often face a decision as coaches: do we dive deep into mindset and beliefs with our clients, or focus on quick, practical strategies for immediate results? In this episode, I break down how to balance deep dives and quick wins in your coaching practice. I share the strengths and downsides of each strategy, how to use both to your advantage, and specific coaching examples showing how these strategies can be applied in real life to get clients unstuck. Step into another fun-filled and insightful episode of the Wise_N_Nerdy podcast, where Joe is joined by special guest Josh Spurgin—also known as DataNerdJosh, an IBM professional and passionate video game enthusiast. Together, they blend fatherhood, fandom, and real-world experience into a conversation that's equal parts entertaining and practical. The episode kicks off with the Question of the Week: “What game provides the best couch co-op experience?” From nostalgic classics to modern favorites, Joe and Josh celebrate the magic of gaming together. Titles like Halo, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros. take center stage as they explore what makes local multiplayer so special—shared laughter, friendly competition, and unforgettable moments with friends and family. With the roll of the dice, the show jumps into the “How Do I…?” segment, tackling a topic every retro gamer should care about: how to avoid getting scammed when buying retro video games. Joe and Josh break down practical tips for spotting counterfeit cartridges, recognizing suspicious deals, and making smart purchasing decisions so you don't overpay or end up with a fake. It's must-know advice for collectors and casual gamers alike. Next up is the “What Are You Nerding Out About?” segment, where Josh shares his excitement about playing Pokémon Pokopia with his kids—highlighting the joy of sharing gaming across generations. He also dives into his love for Magic: The Gathering, a timeless strategy game that continues to captivate players worldwide. Meanwhile, Joe brings anime into the mix, talking about his early impressions of Daemons of the Shadow Realm and his excitement for its future, especially given its connection to the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist. Of course, no Wise_N_Nerdy episode would be complete without a dose of humor, and the dice deliver a horde of Bad Dad Jokes that are as groan-worthy as they are hilarious—perfectly capturing the chaotic charm fans have come to love. The laughter gives way to a more personal moment in the “Daddy, Tell Me A Story” segment, where Josh shares his journey of creating educational YouTube content that's both informative and entertaining. It's an inspiring look at the challenges and rewards of teaching through creativity while keeping an audience engaged. Finally, the episode wraps with the “Parliament of Papas” segment, where Joe and Josh react to a wild Reddit story about someone secretly trying to sell off their family's video game collection because it was taking up too much space. The discussion dives into themes of communication, shared ownership, and respecting the value—both sentimental and financial—of a gaming collection. This episode is a perfect blend of gaming nostalgia, parenting insight, and nerd culture appreciation. Whether you're here for the co-op memories, the practical advice, or the laughs, there's something for everyone. So grab a controller, join the conversation, and don't forget to Find your FAMdom.
