Revisiting one of our most powerful and unforgettable conversations — our interview with Betsy and Gentry Mikesell. These inspiring entrepreneurs, known for creating Beddy's, the bedding company that transformed how families make their beds, open up about more than business success in this episode. They share the life-altering plane crash that reshaped their family forever — and the profound gratitude that came from surviving the unimaginable. As we enter the Thanksgiving season, their story is a reminder of what truly matters: family, faith, resilience, and the ability to find gratitude even in the hardest chapters of life. Their words still echo with one of the most powerful lines from the episode: “It was the worst thing to happen to our family… and yet the best.” This is an episode that will warm your heart, move you deeply, and inspire you to reach out to the people you love with a little extra gratitude today.Timestamps[2:56] Being an entrepreneur and the start of Beddy's [10:43] Snapshot of what Beddy's looks like today [17:10] The plane crash[21:33] Gaining consciousness [27:20] Having to wait for Gentry to heal [37:42] Fearing he might not make it [41:20] Learning to not be judgmental or critical [42:51] Where Alyssa was and how this experience touched her [49:35] Moving to Tennessee and how life was later [53:51] One final nugget of truth Notable quotes:“There were just so many things that came into place, like if we had crashed 20 seconds earlier, we wouldn't have crashed near campers. Clive Lawrence will be a familiar face to many who've been going to Turf Moor over the last forty years or so. As a photographer who worked for the club, the Burnley Express and the Lancashire Telegraph, he spent many a Saturday travelling up and down the country following - and capturing - the Clarets. He's teamed up with Matt from Lower Block to produce a fantastic new fanzine entitled 'Protests to Promotion - Burnley FC 1989-1992' which charts a snapshot in time of the club's history. Clive and Matt sat down with Daz and Chris to talk about the fanzine and what that period means to the club.

How does a three-person L&D team support 23,000 associates across seven states? In this episode, Chris Chappell, Director of Learning & Development at Weis Markets, shares how servant leadership, clear career paths, and just-in-time video microlearning are elevating the employee experience—and the customer experience—across retail, manufacturing, and logistics. Show Notes:Weis Market's Chris Chappell offers many key takeaways to empower team members to succeed. His top points include: Lead as a servant, not a boss. Chris Chappell centers L&D on servant leadership—meeting associates' needs, anchoring to mission, and role-modeling behaviors so people trust and follow. Career paths + strong leadership = retention. Provide clear growth paths and accountable leaders. Weis Markets' leadership development now spans five levels and correlates with higher engagement and reduced turnover that is 20–25 points lower than retail averages. Make learning “in the moment.” Snapshot video microlearning—accessed via QR codes embedded in SOPs—powers fast cross-training (e.g., moving a bakery associate to deli) and reduces friction during call-offs. Do fewer things, better. “Ruthless prioritization” keeps work aligned to mission, strategy, core operations, and compliance. The team consolidated ~1,798 courses to ~800 and is rebuilding high-value content for mobile delivery in Workday Learning. Build a distributed training network. Centralize standards and content, then empower expert trainers across departments to deliver. Add feedback loops with structured homework and report-outs so learners hold themselves accountable. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1192: Ford faces a jolt of EV reality as the F-150 Lightning may lose its spark. Meanwhile, SEMA goes full throttle with hydrogen, hybrids, and horsepower. And Progressive's “Flo” gets a digital copilot as AI helps animals hit the road in the brand's latest ad.Show Notes with links:Ford is reportedly weighing the end of its all-electric F-150 Lightning as it reassesses its EV strategy amid steep losses and cooling demand. The move would mark a dramatic shift from what Ford once called a “Model T moment.”Ford's Model e division has lost $2.2B in the first half of 2025 and Lightning production remains paused after a fire at aluminum supplier Novelis,Sales have plateaued: only 24,577 units sold through October and fewer than 100,000 total since launch.Ford execs are prioritizing gas and hybrid F-150s as EV tax credits fade and consumer demand softens. The review echoes moves by GM and Stellantis, both of which have scaled back electric truck plans. The SEMA Show once again delivered its signature mix of over-the-top creativity and real-world innovation. Automakers used the Las Vegas stage to showcase performance, personalization, and the future of vehicle design.Ford unveiled the Maverick 300T, a 300-hp street truck featuring the Mustang's turbocharger, a lowered stance, and sport-tuned suspension aimed at AWD trims.Honda came in hot with eight prototypes, led by the Civic Type R HRC Rally XP built for rally racing.Toyota showed off a Turbo Trail Cruiser based on a 1985 Land Cruiser FJ60.Nissan's Dune Patrol turned the Armada into a desert racer.“SEMA has become the proving ground for what's next in personalization — if it's wild enough to work here, it's only a matter of time before it hits the street,” said one show organizer.Progressive is putting artificial intelligence in the driver's seat—literally—in its new ad “Drive Like an Animal.” The spot uses AI-generated visuals to depict animals behind the wheel while promoting the company's Snapshot® program, which personalizes rates based on actual driving habits. The ad combines AI-generated animation with the familiar voice of Flo (Stephanie Courtney) for a whimsical twist where llamas, lions, and leopards rule the road.“AI is an exciting tool that adds to our ability to innovate, but it's just that—a tool,” said Matt Dillon, Business Leader of Creative Development at Ninety6, Progressive's agency.Progressive says its use of AI follows strict ethical and copyright standards, emphasizing responsible innovation.“‘Drive Like an Animal' shows that fairness and personalization can be fun—drivers deserve coverage that reflects them,” said Meghan Walsh, Progressive's Head of Integrated Marketing.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Home to Allan and his company, Software Strategy Ltd. Let him take up the story:Once upon a time I was a programmer, people I worked with thought I was quite a good one. I was part of a team building a hand-held PC, which was a big deal in 1991. I worked on electricity modelling, I wrote programs for railway timetables, software for banks and real-time data feeds for Reuters. I built secure e-mail systems and mobile phone network diagnostic tools. The code was not the problem, the problem was the way the team was set up, the problem was the way we were asked to work, or the way work reached us. To fix that problem I needed to become a manager… but I didn't want to be a foolish manager like all the ones I'd worked for before, so I got myself a management qualification. And while I was getting that qualification, I discovered that modern management thinking was very close to the then newly emerging field of “agile software development.” When I look back at my experiences so much of the good times matched the thing, we call agile.I still love software, I love coding, but I don't code any more. (Actually, I do code a little, for love.) I devote my time to helping make software better. In my mind when I'm teaching, advising, coaching, consulting I'm helping the person I used to be. When I see programmers at work I see my younger self. And I want them to do a great job, I want them to be able to do a better job than I ever did.Today I call myself an Agile Guide – I guide people and organizations to greater agility. I provide coaching and direct advice on agile working to leaders and teams creating digital products (software!). The companies I work with come from many fields as different as healthcare and surveying. However, they all depend on software to deliver for their customers. Without software they are nothing. Yesterday… I started coding in 1982 on a Sinclair ZX81. By 1986 I was earning money as a regular contributor to BBC Telesoftware – PDP, PDR, Eclipse, Fonts, Demon's Tomb, EMACS (no, not that emacs), Snapshot and Femcoms to name a few, mostly in 6502 assembler. In 1989 I was a system administrator with Nixdorf Computer. In 1991 I was a software tester at DIP in Guildford building the Sharp PC-3000. Even as an undergraduate I was hired by the University to help teach other undergraduates and occasionally post-graduates.

In this special bonus episode, Cesar and Sarah dives deep into the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program, exploring its evolution, impact, and what the future holds for private school participation in Indiana. This episode breaks down the latest 2025 Choice Report from the Indiana Department of Education, providing insights into how school choice is shaping educational opportunities and equity across the state. Key Takeaways: Historical Evolution of School Choice in Indiana Indiana's journey to educational freedom, beginning with the first charter school law in 2001, major reforms in 2008 that enabled public-to-public school transfers, the introduction of tax credit scholarships and vouchers for private schools, and recent expansions to universal eligibility. The Choice Scholarship Program: Opening Doors Impact on Hoosier families, making private school education accessible to more students. How expansions have progressively reduced barriers, especially income requirements, paving the way for nearly universal eligibility by the 2026–27 school year. By the Numbers: School Choice Participation Enrollment breakdown: ~80% of students attend their assigned traditional public school. 20% participate in some form of school choice (public-to-public transfers, charter, innovation network, or private schools). Largest group: ~95,000 students using public-to-public transfer. Private school choice: 8% overall, 6% using vouchers (~74,741 students). Growth in private school enrollment—steady increase of ~5,000 students per year. Who is Participating? Spotlight on demographics and financial background: Average participating family size is about 4.6 people. Average family income: just under $100,000. Majority white, split evenly male/female, with strong representation from other ethnicities. Higher participation at elementary levels (K-5). Average voucher received: ~$6,000; average private school tuition: just under $8,000. Geographical Trends Highest choice participation in metropolitan/suburban areas due to more available options (private and charter schools). Some rural/small-town counties have limited or no private schools, affecting participation. Looking Forward The imminent shift to universal school choice and its potential implications. Challenges in expanding access to options in underserved areas. Did you find this episode informative? Help us out!
