This week we go back in time with Essendon utility David Flood. David reminisces about his career, reflects on some of special moments during his time in the game. David, a Wimmera Football product, made his way to the Essendon Bombers in the mid 80's, making his senior debut in 1986. David spent 10 years at Windy Hill, playing 58 games in that time and kicking 36 goals. In this chat, David talks about making his way to Essendon, Essendon's dominant early 90s period, trying to make his way into the team, being omitted for the 1993 Grand Final team, his injuries along with sharing his experiences in the coaches' box at AFL and TAC Cup level. A great listen with the ninety-Fourth member of 'The 90's Club Footy Podcast'. This episode has been produced by Set Sounds.

It can't have gotten far, it was just with us! Geez, you can't take your eyes of opportunity for a second! It's time to Restump Podcast Sunday's demoralising top 4 departure.Sunday at the MCG felt very historically Fremantle-ish. Destroying pivotal moments and golden opportunities! Just when we had the chance to almost lock down some valuable top four real estate, the Essendon Bomber Bank said, “sorry, we're not financing that” and the deal fell over.It really hurt because it was another game that we've let slip. The two games in South Australia were slightly different bags, but the early West Coast loss and the Collingwood draw had filled our allowable debacle quota. Letting Essendon run us down from four goals behind… is a step too far and could have horrifically dire consequences in relation to September participation. The game was quite deceiving. Our rare accuracy and efficiency were clouding the reality. The fact is, we weren't travelling that well early in the game. Just 10 inside fifties in the first quarter to Essendon's 18 was disguised because we kicked 4 goals 1. We were scoring every second entry, but so were the Bombers who kicked 5 goals 4. Did the 9-point quarter time margin not set the alarm bells off?Was there a sense of complacency? Were we out there thinking a mirrored performance from the previous week against the West Coast Eagles would unfold? At half time we'd gone inside 50 two less times than we did in the first quarter, but again we were accurate and efficient kicking 5 goals neat. Compounding our potential complacency was Essendon kicking 1 goal 2… but they went inside 50 fifteen times. If Essendon started scoring, we were in strife. The penny seemed to drop in the third quarter as we got our game going and got it on our terms. Clearances, contested possession, inside fifties all turned in our favour. But for all our dominance we didn't necessarily make the most of it.The final quarter was a disaster. They steam rolled us and, disappointingly, we showed little to no fight. We reverted to the first half form, getting beaten in contested and uncontested possession and they took 16 more marks than us in the final term alone. We made just one centre clearance and that was where the game was lost. It was a game we should have won with the personnel we had but the experienced and steadying hands of Alex Pearce and Sonny Walters at either end of the ground, were noticeably missing. And if those ‘numbers on a page' readers think we don't miss Nat Fyfe… maybe now they'll change their tune. It's a devastating loss and one that may prove fatal in terms of September this year but, bigger picture-wise, let's not forget where we are and where we were this time last year. (15th for those playing at home) We're an exceptionally young side of substantial talent. As far as premiership windows go, ours is only just starting to open. We've got the Cats, Giants and Port to come in the run to the finals. Those three teams in their current form probably pose the toughest test any side has to endure in these final three weeks. We're only a win and % out of 9th…. we probably need to win two of our last three.Anyway, lets get into it on the pod and break it all down further. So, if you're looking to make sense of it all…. point us in the right direction because so are we! Problems shared are problems halved and you can't solve them without talking about them. Let's start the chit chat. Support the Show.
This week Brian and Harrison kick things off with some footy chat; BT gives his thoughts on the current state of umpiring, he clarifies the leadership changes at Channel Seven and sets the story straight on his future with the network. Away from footy they hit on; the Tour de France, Wimbledon and some mailbag submissions. Later, the boys are joined by Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) CEO, Travis Auld. Travis joined the AGPC after a successful and extensive career within the AFL world where he worked as COO for the Essendon Bombers (97'-09'), as the inaugural CEO of the Gold Coast Suns (09'-14') and then, CFO and GM of Broadcast & Clubs for the AFL (14'-23'). The conversation details his time at those clubs and the AFL and how it all compares to being in charge of two of the biggest events on the Australian sporting calendar in the F1 GP and the MotoGP. Travis is a fascinating, intellectual and engaging character who is helping to accelerate the prominence of Australian sporting events on the global scene, we thank Travis for his time. The self-professed Prince of Perth is back and with him comes the feeling that all is well again. Time to Restump preview podcast Freo's good-natured battle against the team with the flying machine logo!Essendon is travelling at around 90 points a match but they've just upped their offensive game. Sure, its in regards to their logo but apparently its offensive none the less! Are we, as Freo fans, drinking at the last chance Saloon Saturday night? Our post-bye form has been horrid and if we're going to turn it around it has to be now or never. The reality is when you look at both teams, Essendon and Freo are almost identical as far as form lines go. Essendon have beaten just one top eight side and have beaten 3 of the four bottom teams. Freo have beaten just one top eight side, we've beaten three of the four bottom teams and been beaten by one of them. Are we really in the 2023 conversation? Having said that, the form of pretty much the entire league, apart from Collingwood, and Port Adelaide, is topsy turvy and rarely predictable. So almost everyone can get a September hypothetical mention. Our defences are comparable and we generate the same number of scoring shots per game, from the same number of inside 50s. The difference is Essendon has slotted 16 goals more than us. They take their chances and its something we have to start doing. We'll cop the Richmond loss, rule a line through the Giants debacle and restart our season right now… or rather tomorrow night… in the wet… and the cold. But a warm dry 4 points will fix all that.Jojo, is recording from the Tuscany bird Avery for hopefully the final time so everything should return to normal programming next week. But for now, there's a tick over 40 minutes of discussion on the chances of the purple people against the red sash wearing inoffensive Essendon Hot Air Balloons tomorrow night. So, feel free to immerse yourself in our nonsense, providing you accept that we offer no guarantees or time refunds. Support the show
