Scott Fuglistaller was one of those champion team mates who did everything he could to be the best he could be. Unfortunately for the self acclaimed battler it was just never quite enough during his time at the Hurricanes competing with some pretty gifted athletes. He found a way though with moves to the Highlanders and then the Melbourne Rebels for him to become a regular Super Rugby starter and even captain. Sitting at a natural weight of around 80kgs, Scotty had to work so hard in the gym and with his diet to get to a weight that he could survive in the forwards at Super Rugby level. That came at a price, having 11 major surgeries during his career which took it's toll. Some other parts that stood out for me in this one were..The freedom Scotty had growing up which meant he grew up quickHow finding rugby was a turning point in his lifeHow he got from 80kg to 106kgsHis battles with self confidence and why he played his best under pressureWhy he moved to Japan and his time playing thereThe struggle of life after rugbyAnd how he landed in his current role of helping retired players tranisition with the NZRPA.As you'll hear Scotty has had a journey to get where he is, he's such a top man who will always put others first. Let me know what stood out for you in this one in the comments

Legendary Sky Sport NZ commentator Tony Johnson joined Brett McKay & Harry Jones on The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast this week, as they try to get to the bottom of just why 2025 has been the best start to a Super Rugby season in living memory. And it's not an easy question with one simple answer. It's not just that all the Australian team are competitive. It's not just that anyone can beat anyone on any give weekend. It's not just that the demise of the Melbourne Rebels has boosted depth in other squads. It might be the do with it being a Lions Tour year, and the extra jeopardy that brings. It might be weather-related, and the fact that it's been a nice summer on both sides of the Tasman. It's quite likely all of the above.   Whatever the reason or reasons, it has been a wonderful start to the Super Rugby Pacific season.   Games of the Week: SRP Rd.7: Hurricanes v Waratahs, Wellington URC Rd.14: Ulster v Stormers, Belfast Premiership Rd.13: Bath v Harlequins, the Rec Top 14 Rd.20: Clermont v La Rochelle, Clermont League One Week 15: Canon Eagles v Toyota Verblitz, Tokyo MLR Rd.6: Houston SaberCats v San Diego Legion, Houston   #rugby #rugbypodcast #89Combo #SuperRugbyPacific #UnitedRugbyChampionship #Premiership #Top14 #JapanRugbyLeagueOne #MajorLeagueRugby   Find us: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@8-9Combo?sub_confirmation=1 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1BcKhb24YOtwQhKc0S3sDm Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-8-9-combo-rugby-podcast/id1729575866   Social media: #89Combo Twitter: https://twitter.com/89combo BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/89combo.bsky.social   Find Brett and Harry on both Twitter and on BlueSky: @BMcSport + @HaribaldiJones   Music: "Stalling" by Topher Mohr & Alex Elena (via YouTube Creator Studio)   Voiceovers by Chookman + Sean Maloney Learn more about your ad choices. Curious selections for the opening weekend of Super Rugby Pacific, the French Six Nations fallout, and it's a second attempt at life post-Warren Gatland in Wales, as Geoff Parkes joined Brett McKay & Harry Jones in this week's episode of The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast. An already accomplished rugby columnist, Geoff Parkes provides some wonderful perceptions into Super Rugby for 2025, as well as delving into his writing processes that delivered two books over the Australian summer: 'A Year in the Life and Death of the Melbourne Rebels', the fantastic behind-the-scenes look at the 2024 demise of the Rebels, and his debut crime novel 'When the Deep Dark Bush Swallows You Whole', set in rural New Zealand. It's a fascinating insight into the writer's mind, and how major writing works come together. Changes are coming to Super Rugby Pacific.  The competition has gone from 12 teams to 11 with the collapse of the Melbourne Rebels and in 2025, will move to a six-team playoff format.  All six teams who qualify for the post-season will feature in the quarterfinals, with the three winners and the highest-seeded loser making up the four teams in the semifinals.  That lucky loser will drop one seeding for the semifinals, which means the top seed after round-robin play is guaranteed a home semifinal.  New Super Rugby chief executive Jack Mesley tells Heather du Plessis-Allan the new format will bring a lot of interest.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Rugby podcasters Brett McKay and Harry Jones are joined on The 8-9 Combo by Wallabies and former Queensland Reds lock/backrower and now Melbourne Rebels skipper Lukhan Salakaia-Loto for a thoroughly enjoyable chat about life, leadership and the difficulty the Rebels players are experiencing with their futures far from certain.   In a chat that covers everything from LSL's stratospheric rise from starting out in rugby to the Junior Wallabies in 12 months, to the mixed feelings of on-field confidence and off-field anxiety inside the Rebels camp currently, the conversation includes his emergence as a natural born leader within a group featuring a heavy Polynesian cohort, and what his time with the Northampton Saints taught him about his own game. Plus, Lukhan tries to blame his daughter for the current state of his playlist.   Social media: #89Combo Twitter: https://twitter.com/89combo Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/89combo/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@8-9Combo TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@89combopodcast   Brett: https://twitter.com/BMcSport Harry: https://twitter.com/HaribaldiJones   (Yes, Brett and Harry did used to host The Roar Rugby Podcast!)   Find Brett and Harry's written work on RugbyPass and The Roar: Brett: https://www.rugbypass.com/plus/contributor/brett-mckay/ Harry: https://www.theroar.com.au/author/haribaldi/   Music from Uppbeat: https://uppbeat.io/track/oakvale-of-albion/extreme Voiceovers by Chookman + Amelia Learn more about your ad choices.
