Some novels are so fresh and original it is always a pleasant shock to discover them. "Darling Rose Gold" by Stephanie Wrobel is one of those books. Her premise is so original. As the book begins our protagonist, Darling Rose Gold, of our title, is picking her mother up to bring her home from prison. Her mother has been serving time for something she did. Her mother had been afflicted with what is known as Munchausen's syndrome by proxy. The things she had forced her daughter to endure as a child had been so awful that she had been convicted and sent to prison as punishment. Now she's out. Has her daughter forgiven her mother? You'll find out. Read this book. It is one of my sleeper picks of 2020. Oh, and this is Wrobel's debut novel and she told me after we recorded this radio show that this had also been her debut radio interview. How cool is that? The Book Nook on WYSO is presented by the Greene County Public Library with additional support from Washington-Centerville Public Library
This book was recommended by the author of the Sun Down Motel and we enjoyed this dark twisty book. *Note: If you watched THE ACT on Hulu starring Patricia Arquette this novel is inspired by the true story of Dee Blanchard and her daughter, Gypsy. Book summation courtesy of AP: “The phenomenon Munchausen syndrome by proxy — in which a parent purposely makes a child ill to gain sympathy and attention — receives a fresh update in Stephanie Wrobel’s excellent debut. The psychological thriller “Darling Rose Gold” works well as an intense look at a dysfunctional mother-daughter relationship, a tale of manipulation and how one person’s devastating secrets and lies reverberate through a community and a family. For nearly 18 years, Patty Watts portrayed to the world that her daughter, Rose Gold Watts, suffered from debilitating illnesses that doctors seemed unable to cure, and fed on the sympathy of her friends and neighbors in her midwestern town of Deadwick. Fundraisers were held for “darling” Rose Gold to defray medical bills because caring for her daughter was Patty’s only job. In turn, Patty was there for others, volunteering at functions, garnering accolades for her generosity. “I don’t know how she does it,” was a frequent refrain. What happens is next is unbelievable.”
Stephanie Wrobel is the author of debut novel Darling Rose Gold, a mother-daughter story of obsession, reconciliation, and revenge. It was fascinating to chat with Stephanie about her research into Munchausen by proxy, her advice to authors to treat the business side of publishing as part of their job, her choice to apply to grad school that changed everything, the idea that an author needs life experience to tackle tricky subjects and how Stephanie's struggle to find her footing in a new city gave her the guts to quit her job and write a novel.
Author Stephanie Wrobel stops by the podcast to chat with Daniel Ford about her debut novel Darling Rose Gold (out today!). To learn more about Stephanie Wrobel, visit her official website, like her Facebook page, and follow her on Twitter and Instagram. Welcoming in 2019, Episode 44 features another trip to the Cafe Car, this time with long-time host and contributor Darling Rose. BK is joined by Rachel who has worked with By Night Studios and is the author behind Rose City By Night (among other Storyteller Vault titles) in an experimental episode. Over the course of the episode, they design and develop a Changeling: the Dreaming chronicle set in the 'happiest place on earth' exploring the urban myths, and seedier side of a once-magical place. Topics such as giving characters choice, designing antagonists, placing meaningful NPCs, cross-over potential, and developing engaging locations are all covered as the free-flowing conversation applies a World of Darkness lens to the theme park. The universal need for Storytellers to be given 'a hug and a cup of tea' is also discussed. We also mentioned Veil of Night (for Vampire), and the website Behind the Name. Make sure that you check out Rachel's work; she can also be found on Twitter via @Stolen_Fire In Episode 43, BK will draw an interview episode from the archives, bringing it under the Midnight Express banner, and Episode 44 features Darling_Rose as we discuss approaches to the World of Darkness worldview. Note that Midnight Express Productions continues to offer titles through the Storytellers Vault, currently covering Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage - with new titles slated for release across October. Hosts: BK and Rachel.
