Public Art Installation as an Intrinsic Part of Building Development with Corail Bourrelier Fabiani

How is urban art developed in cooperation with planners, developers, and architects? Public art is designed to be viewed and enjoyed from many angles. Riccardo embraces this 360-degree perspective in this episode by examining a component of major programmes that is not often explored: the development of the impressive art installations on display in many public buildings. He speaks with Corail Bourrelier Fabiani, a former host of the podcast and the passionate programme manager behind London's Shard and Paddington Square sculptures.Corail outlines the intricate relationship between public art and major urban developments in the city, from why it's so important to inspire ongoing wonder in our concrete jungles to the challenges of getting involved late in the development process. Her experiences highlight the importance of stakeholder collaboration and the many moving parts that must be navigated to create something beautiful, lasting, and welcoming for tourists and residents alike—something that helps define the fabric of the city around us.Takeaways:The humanizing impact of interacting with public art.The complex process of stakeholder management and artistic team selection. The benefits of enthusiastic architect and engineer buy-in on an art installation. The technical, structural, and visual challenges inherent in making public art decisions at the end of development.Quote: “There are a lot of sculptures around us that we, after a while, we don't even see. And I would say, like, it's true. It's true with a lot of the urban fabric that when you get used to something, you just stop like looking at it. If you take the tube in Paris, for example, like the very old entrances to the tube with like the lights and the way they're shaped, etc. This kind of Art Deco, like, beautiful entrance. Most people don't even see them anymore, you know. Or if you walk along alongside the Thames and you go closer to the Tate, you would see these lampposts that have big fish at the bottom of them that are, you know, around the lamppost. And a lot of people, because we're so. There are so many images, etc, or we're too much into our own world, like thinking about our issues, our, like our next meeting, et cetera, we just walk past them without even noticing what's around us. And I think art, the magic of art is that sometimes it grabs your attention, you don't know why, and it makes you stop for a second and realize that your surroundings, or be completely amazed that you notice that element.” - Corail Bourrelier FabianiThe conversation doesn't stop here—connect and converse with our community via LinkedIn:Follow Navigating Major ProgrammesFollow Riccardo CosentinoRead Riccardo's latest at www.riccardocosentino.comFollow Corail Bourrelier Fabiani Music: "A New Tomorrow" by Chordial Music. We have experts standing by to answer your questions. One of the classic problems with tactical strength and conditioning is that, unlike many athletic settings, you can't assume a common baseline level of fitness. Even in combat arms units, it's normal to have extremely wide ranges of fitness levels in the same unit. The same platoon might have powerlifters, distance runners, and gamers who would rather not exercise at all. In this episode Nate Palin joins us to share some lessons learned about navigating this challenge. He has coached diverse populations ranging from civilians to special operators, all of whom have influenced his current perspective. We touch on a number of important topics: Novelty in training can significantly impact engagement Barbells are not always the primary tool in tactical trainingEngagement and enjoyment are crucial for participation in trainingCoaching relationships are essential for effective training outcomesLifestyle conversations often take precedence over strict programmingReal-time monitoring can enhance training effectiveness and safetyPerformance programs focus on pushing limits, while wellness programs aim to elevate the baselineWellness and high performance are interconnectedTactical professionals have diverse roles beyond physicalityKnowledge sharing is vital for effective coachingMotivation is a leader's responsibility, not just a coach'sHard work remains the foundation of success in training

In today's podcast we takes a close look at the evolution and future challenges of tall building design with engineering design mega star Kamran Moazami.Kamran is WSP's managing director for property and buildings and with nearly half a century of design experience under his belt – most recently on projects such as The Shard, 22 Bishopsgate, and One Blackfriars, he is certainly the man to ask!It is clear that around the world, the skyline is evolving at an unprecedented pace, with ever-taller, more ambitious buildings redefining the way we live and work. From London to New York, Dubai to Shanghai, the race to build higher is driven by increasing urbanisation, the need for sustainable development, and cutting-edge advancements in engineering and materials science. But designing and delivering these megastructures is no easy feat. Every tall building presents a unique set of challenges—from wind resistance and structural stability to fire safety, vertical transportation, and carbon efficiency. The growing urgency around climate resilience also means engineers are now pushing boundaries to create greener, smarter, and more adaptive high-rises.And as we are seeing post-earthquake in Myanmar and Bangkok, but also following the tragic 2017 Grenfell fire in London, maintaining public confidence in high rise is an increasingly challenging business.Few understand these complexities better than Kamran – so let's find out more.ResourcesWSP Property and Buildings websiteThe Shard22 BishopsgateKamran Moazami interview in the Structural Engineer 2015Post Grenfell fire Hackett Report

How has modern architecture transformed our cities — and is it for the better? In this episode, bestselling historian Simon Jenkins and co-host of the Rest is Politics Rory Stewart explore the rise of modernist planning and its impact on Britain's architectural heritage. Jenkins walks us through Britain's rich architectural history, from Stonehenge to the Shard, while offering a critique of the changes brought by 20th-century urban development. Many will know that I've just published my new book, Digitally Curious: Your Guide to Navigating the Future of AI and All Things Tech, which is now available worldwide. The reception has been overwhelmingly positive, and I believe it is a book that will help many people better understand the technology surrounding us.I've already been interviewed on several podcasts about the book, and you can find links to these below.I wanted to showcase the book on the podcast, but it would be strange for me to interview myself.I recently presented at the Skillsoft London Perspectives event at the Shard on “The future of work in the age of AI.”I always strive to present the latest thinking in my keynotes, and as part of my research, I wanted to try out the new Google product Notebook LM, which stands for Notebook Language Model. You can access it via notebooklm.googleIn Google's own words: NotebookLM is your personalised AI research assistant powered by Google's most capable model, Gemini 1.5 Pro.One cool feature is the ability to upload your data and turn it into a podcast with two AI-generated hosts.I decided to try this out with the book. I uploaded the book's PDF, which contains 74,000 words, and pushed the button to make a podcast. I did nothing else. Five minutes later, what you hear on this episode is what was produced verbatim. I've not edited the 12-minute AI-generated  episode in any way.I don't think this will immediately replace podcasts or podcast hosts. However, it may be a new way to present written information. We all have different learning styles, and so perhaps this would help people who prefer to listen instead of reading content.I look forward to your thoughts on this and the content from my AI hosts about the book.If you'd like to pick up a copy of the book head to curious.click/order, and as always, I encourage you to stay curious.ResourcesNotebookLMAI in Education Podcast with Nadio GranataSilicon UK Podcast on Digitally CuriousPurchase Digitally CuriousThanks for listening to Digitally Curious. Without nails and other simple inventions, we wouldn't have bustling megacities of today. Roma Agrawal is an engineer, author and broadcaster best known for working on the design of The Shard, Western Europe's tallest tower. She joins host Krys Boyd to discuss simple inventions such as the rivet and string that we don't think of as particularly revolutionary but which carry all the innovations of today on their shoulders.
