In this episode, Andrea sheds light on the disconnect between the narrative presented publicly vs the medical records and trial testimony. She traces how ketamine became the driving force in Maya Kowalski's treatment from Dr. Anthony Kirkpatrick. What followed was a rapid escalation: four-day ketamine infusions, increasingly alarming blog posts written in Maya's voice, and ultimately a controversial, high-dose ketamine coma in Mexico. This sets the stage for Maya's arrival at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. *** Try out Andrea's Podcaster Coaching App: https://studio.com/apps/andrea/podcaster Order Andrea's book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy.  Click here to view our sponsors. In this Friday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan reacts to President Trump's eyebrow-raising comments about classified information and aliens, then pivots to a far more earthly threat as new reporting reveals U.S. taxpayer dollars helped fund research collaborations with Chinese military-linked institutions. Bryan also breaks down fresh evidence that China secretly conducted a nuclear test, why Greenland's missile defense position is critical to America's survival, and why Trump has issued a 10-day warning to Iran as U.S. carrier groups surge into the Middle East. He explains the stakes surrounding Diego Garcia, rising tensions with Mauritius, and the seizure of another sanctioned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean. The episode turns to political shockwaves in the United Kingdom and Washington following new Jeffrey Epstein revelations, including the arrest of Prince Andrew and congressional demands for CIA transparency. Andrea has been following the Kowalski v Johns Hopkins All Children's case since it first received national attention, and previously covered it in depth in our third season. Within this 4-part series, we're revisiting the case with the benefit of additional trial testimony, released records, and appellate developments. In this first part, we're going back to 2015 to revisit the events that set this case in motion. We're sharing this recap now because the Kowalski case is directly relevant to themes we'll be exploring in season 7 of Nobody Should Believe Me. The public conversation around this case—shaped by courtroom proceedings, media coverage, and documentary storytelling—has had broader implications for how medical child abuse allegations are understood and debated.  *** Try out Andrea's Podcaster Coaching App: https://studio.com/apps/andrea/podcaster Order Andrea's book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy.  Click here to view our sponsors. Protecting the Voiceless: Bill Waybourn on Human Trafficking and Hidden AbuseThis week, Marcus and Melanie sit down with one of Texas' most respected law enforcement leaders and advocates for the vulnerable — Sheriff Bill Waybourn. With more than three decades of service, Bill's career has been defined by courage, conviction, and a relentless commitment to protecting both communities and the voiceless. From pioneering groundbreaking DWI reform programs to shaping Texas firearm legislation, Bill has stood at the intersection of public safety, constitutional rights, and moral responsibility. But beyond the badge, Bill's story is also one of deep compassion — especially when it comes to children in need.Bill served 31 years as Chief of Police in Dalworthington Gardens, where he became a recognized expert witness and leader in statewide criminal justice reform. He is credited with pioneering the Texas “No Refusal” DWI program, a model that has significantly reduced drunk driving fatalities and has since been adopted by multiple states.Bill has also testified before the Texas Legislature on a myriad of key issues.Bill is especially honored to have helped pass the Chris Kyle Bill, which streamlines the process for military servicemen and women transitioning into law enforcement careers. His dedication to veterans and service members reflects a lifelong commitment to those who have sacrificed for this country.During his first term as Sheriff, Bill launched several nationally recognized initiatives, including a Human Trafficking Unit, a Department of Intelligence, aggressive inmate service programs, less-than-lethal training expansion, and cutting-edge departmental reforms.Bill and his wife Laura Waybourn are the proud parents of ten children, eight of whom have been adopted.Together, they are passionate advocates for children without families, and their lives are rooted in service far beyond law enforcement.A Heartbreaking Story of Survival: AlyssaOne of the most emotional moments in this episode comes as Bill shares the story of his foster daughter Alyssa, who endured horrific medical abuse as a toddler. He recounts how Alyssa was severely malnourished, weighing only 18 pounds, dehydrated, and tragically harmed by her biological mother through Munchausen syndrome by proxy — a form of abuse where caregivers fabricate illness for attention or control.Under proper medical care, Alyssa began to flourish — but her story shines a light on a rarely discussed form of child abuse that demands awareness and action. This conversation is equal parts intense, inspiring, and deeply human — a reminder that real leadership means protecting those who cannot protect themselves. In this episode you will hear:• My dad believed in practical lessons. After bragging that I was the best cowboy on the ground today, and my dad put me on a Bramer steer. I lasted about a second and a half on that ride. He went from there teaching about humility, and how it's a biblical principle, and I needed to learn about that. (9:10)• One of the things that the Air Force did well is that they taught you leadership, independence, and discipline all at the same time. (15:56)• I was 24 years old, and the Police Chief resigned. The city council interviewed a bunch of people and about an hour and a half later, they called me back and said, “You're the Chief.” (20:34)• [Marcus] Q: Explain to me the difference between a constable, a police officer, and a sheriff. (A: Starts at 22:40 and runs thru 28:14)• There've been some great moments throughout my career. My [most memorable events] were surrounded by life-saving stuff. (30:57)• As Sheriff, I was blessed to make a human trafficking unit. We are now moving close to 1,200 rescues. (31:42)• Our daughter, Alyssa, at 3 ½ years old, weighed 18 pounds, and was on 17 meds and a feeding tube. She went septic. It was later proved that her biological mother put human feces and urine into her feeding tube. (34:34)• We were honored that God called us to take her in. (40:36)• I met Chris Kyle right after he came home in '09.

In this video, I walk through three everyday patterns in which narcissistic traits are reframed as vulnerability, self-awareness, or moral superiority and therefore escape recognition altogether. From self-diagnosis culture to parenting ideology, these behaviours are often praised rather than named appropriately.I also make an important distinction between Munchausen by proxy and the narcissistic mother, two dynamics that are frequently conflated, but psychologically and motivationally very different. This is not about demonising women or dismissing genuine mental health struggles. It's about understanding how certain traits gain social immunity by wearing the language of care, suffering, and insight, and why that makes them so difficult to name. Psychobabble's free material focuses on helping people recognize psychological patterns. In this episode, we close out our coverage of Serial's The Preventionist with Dr. Randy Alexander, one of the most experienced child abuse pediatricians in the country and the former supervisor of both Dr. Deborah Jensen and Dr. Sally Smith. Randy explains how the media's portrayal of CAPs as all-powerful fundamentally misunderstands how these cases work and ignores the layers of oversight built into the system.  We also revisit the Amanda Saranofksy case, which The Preventionist casts as uncertain despite multiple conflicting stories and medical findings that simply don't match the explanations given. These selective narratives don't bring accountability. They undermine child safety by elevating fringe theories over decades of established research. This week we're re-releasing Andrea's conversation with Kathleen Strader from Prevent Child Abuse America. While Nobody Should Believe Me is, at its core, raising awareness about Munchausen by Proxy abuse, we've been pulled into the larger question of “how do we make sure children are safe in their homes?”. We'll continue exploring that next week during Andrea's interview with Dr. Randy Alexander and throughout season 7 (coming soon!). *** This week Andrea is joined by Kathleen Strader, the National Director for Healthy Families America, the signature home visiting program of Prevent Child Abuse America. Following the Take Care of Maya film and media coverage of so-called "medical kidnapping" and misleading coverage of child abuse, we move the conversation to solutions: what can we do to prevent child abuse? We delve into Kathleen's background dealing with child abuse cases and her work supporting families through home visiting programs. Their conversation touches on the complexities of child abuse, systemic issues, and the importance of supportive measures and interventions that meet families where they are. As we wrap up our coverage of the landmark Kowalski v Johns Hopkins All Children's case, we issue a hopeful message of how we can alleviate one of society's most challenging problems. * * * Check out Prevent Child Abuse America.     Try out Andrea's Podcaster Coaching App: https://studio.com/apps/andrea/podcaster Tickets for Nobody Should Believe Me LIVE: https://www.andreadunlop.net/nobody-should-believe-me-live Order Andrea's book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy.  Click here to view our sponsors. In light of the overturned ruling of Kowalski v Johns Hopkins and Serial's The Preventionist, we're reairing an episode from our Kowalski season in which Andrea dives into the complexities around reporting child abuse suspicions. *** With the jury's stunning $242 million verdict in favor of the Kowalski family, host Andrea Dunlop looks at why this case has struck such a nerve on both sides of the political spectrum. She examines why some mothers accused of medical child abuse are viewed as monsters and others as martyrs.   Andrea looks at the charges against social worker Cathy Bedy the woman who became the face of the child welfare bureaucracy during the Maya Kowalski case and examines her testimony.   We also seek out answers about the troubled state of child welfare in America by talking to Dr. Jessica Pryce, author of the forthcoming book Broken: Transforming Child Protective Services—Notes of a Former Caseworker.  Dr. Pryce shares heart-wrenching stories of mothers whose lives have been turned upside down by investigations and sets out a compelling and urgent case for an overhaul of CPS. With her inside view of the system, she also gives insight on how doctors and other mandated reporters can do the best for the families they want to help even within the current, deeply flawed system.   This episode grapples with the complexity around reporting child abuse suspicions and the potentially chilling ripple effects of the explosive verdict in Kowalski v Johns Hopkins All Childrens. It examines the lack of support for struggling parents in America, while leaving the listener with urgent questions about justice and equity.  *** Learn more about Dr. Pryce's work on her website: https://jessicaprycephd.com/   Tickets for Nobody Should Believe Me LIVE: https://www.andreadunlop.net/nobody-should-believe-me-live Order Andrea's book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy.  Click here to view our sponsors. In a stunning legal reversal that's shaking the true crime and justice world, the Florida appellate court has overturned the $213.5 million verdict in the Maya Kowalski case — one of the most emotionally charged courtroom battles in recent memory. Former FBI agent and true crime analyst Jennifer Coffindaffer sits down with legal expert Dave Ehrenberg to dissect what went wrong and what comes next in this explosive new episode of Break the Case. For those unfamiliar, Maya Kowalski suffered from a rare pain condition known as CRPS. While hospitalized, her mother, Beata Kowalski, was accused by doctors of suffering from Munchausen by proxy — a form of abuse involving fabricating or inducing illness in a child. When Beata was prevented from seeing Maya for more than 80 days, the distraught mother fell into a deep depression and ultimately took her own life, leaving behind a note pleading for her daughter's release. A Florida jury later awarded the Kowalski family over $200 million in damages, holding Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital accountable for false imprisonment, emotional distress, and wrongful death. But now, the Second District Court of Appeals has vacated that verdict entirely, citing major errors by the trial judge — particularly around Florida's “mandatory reporter” immunity laws. The appellate court ruled that hospital staff, acting as mandatory reporters of suspected abuse, were shielded by law and acted in good faith when they contacted child protection authorities. This means a new trial will move forward, but only for a limited set of claims: battery, medical negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress on behalf of Maya herself. Beata's death, which once anchored the case's emotional gravity, may only be referenced as context. The decision not only erases a massive verdict but also sets a crucial precedent for hospitals and medical professionals across Florida. Coffindaffer and Ehrenberg's discussion peels back the layers of this controversial ruling — a reminder that even in the pursuit of justice, emotion and law often collide. This is more than a case; it's a tragedy, a legal reckoning, and a lesson in how far institutions will go to protect themselves under the letter of the law. #TrueCrime #MayaKowalski #BeataKowalski #JohnsHopkinsHospital #LegalAnalysis #BreakingNews #JusticeForMaya #CourtAppeal #FloridaLaw #InvestigativeNews Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Season 6 of Nobody Should Believe Me covers the extraordinary and tragic saga of the McDaniel family, a real-life Southern Gothic tale of Munchausen by Proxy that spans decades and has left untold damage in its wake.  For the past twelve years, Lisa McDaniel worked for The Guthy Jackson Foundation, a high-profile non-profit, dedicated to a rare disease called NMO (Neuromyelitis Optica), from which Lisa claims her son suffered.  But while Lisa appears to be a sweet Southern mom whose personal tragedy led to her heroic work, this image hides her dark history of abuse. How was Lisa able to keep her felony conviction for poisoning and suffocating her infant daughter hidden? How did her children slip through the cracks of the healthcare and legal systems again and again? What really happened to her son Collin?   Season Six breaks a story that is years in the making and made possible through the astounding courage of Mishelle Roberts. This season ties together many elements introduced in previous seasons: ways that systems fail vulnerable victims, the culture of silence and inaction within hospitals that enables abuse, and the damage done to rare disease advocacy and victims' groups which can devastate families and echo through generations.  Follow the show here.
