This season on Nobody Should Believe Me, we tell the story of Lisa McDaniel, who crafted a public image as the Director of Patient Advocacy at the Guthy Jackson Foundation while concealing her conviction for child abuse more than a decade ago. We begin with an introduction to the McDaniel family: Lisa, her husband Carey, and their children—Mishelle, Angellyn, and Collin. While the unraveling of their family began when Collin was “diagnosed” with NMO (Neuromyelitis Optica), to understand the full story, we must go back to where it all began: Hazlehurst, Georgia. Andrea and our producer Myrriah travel with Mishelle–Lisa's courageous eldest daughter– to her mother's hometown, where they sit down with Lisa's younger sister, Sabrina. Sabrina recounts a childhood marked by emotional manipulation and physical abuse at the hands of her older sister. She walks us through Mishelle's early years, how, as a baby, she was often left with relatives for days at a time, and then through Lisa's troubled pregnancy with her second child, Angellyn. Stay tuned through the end of the episode for a preview of what's to come this season. *** Andrea's June 28th event with Lisa Jewell: https://townhallseattle.org/event/lisa-jewell/ Andrea's August 1st event with Gregg Olsen: https://www.libertybaybooks.com/event/west-sound-crime-con-2025-local-authors-gregg-olsen-and-andrea-dunlop Order Andrea's new book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy.  Click here to view our sponsors. Sherri Papini's PERSONALITY DISORDERS Explained by Professional! Sherri Papini personality disorder analysis explores how multiple cluster B mental health conditions create perfect storm for manipulation, self-harm, and elaborate deception schemes. Licensed psychotherapist Shavaun Scott provides comprehensive breakdown of narcissistic personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, and borderline personality disorder traits observed in the infamous kidnapping hoax case. This expert psychological analysis offers crucial insight into understanding criminal psychology and personality disorder treatment challenges. Mental health professional analysis reveals Sherri Papini likely suffers from comorbid cluster B personality disorders, meaning multiple conditions with overlapping symptoms that amplify destructive behaviors. Narcissistic personality disorder traits drive her constant need for special attention and victim status, while histrionic personality disorder features create insatiable cravings for emotional drama and intensity. Borderline personality disorder elements contribute to self-destructive behaviors, unstable relationships, and chronic feelings of emptiness filled through manipulation and deception. Criminal psychology examination of Papini's childhood reveals reported abuse experiences that often trigger personality disorder development as psychological coping mechanisms. Mental health experts explain how powerless children learn that victim status generates attention and care, establishing lifelong patterns of manufactured victimhood. Papini's teenage years included chronic lying, running away episodes, and blaming others for self-inflicted injuries - all recognized early warning signs for developing severe personality disorders requiring specialized mental health intervention. Most disturbing personality disorder analysis involves potential Munchausen by proxy behaviors with Papini's children, including reports of forcing them to inhale rubbing alcohol to induce illness. This represents dangerous escalation where attention-seeking needs override maternal protective instincts, demonstrating how untreated cluster B disorders can endanger innocent victims. Expert psychological analysis explains why personality disorder treatment proves challenging - patients often manipulate therapists, refuse accountability, and view therapy as performance stages rather than genuine healing opportunities requiring specialized training to recognize and resist manipulation tactics. #PersonalityDisorders #ClusterBPersonalityDisorders #NarcissisticPersonalityDisorder #BorderlinePersonalityDisorder #HistrionicPersonalityDisorder #SherriPapini #CriminalPsychology #TrueCrimePsychology #MentalHealthExpert #PsychologicalAnalysis #MunchausenByProxy #PersonalityDisorderTreatment

Licensed psychotherapist Shavaun Scott provides comprehensive psychological profile examining self-harm behaviors, manipulation tactics, and potential Munchausen by proxy warning signs. This expert true crime psychology breakdown explores dark personality disorder traits and antisocial behaviors driving elaborate deception schemes that devastated families and communities. Criminal psychology examination reveals Sherri Papini's willingness to inflict severe physical self-harm - including burns, cuts, and requesting assault from accomplices - indicates psychological disturbance exceeding typical attention-seeking behavior. Mental health analysis suggests complete disconnection from normal empathy and self-preservation instincts characteristic of severe antisocial personality traits. The calculated nature involving prepaid phone coordination, kidnapping case research, and elaborate planning demonstrates viewing other people as manipulation objects rather than human beings deserving consideration. Psychological analysis of potential Munchausen by proxy behaviors represents most dangerous personality disorder escalation, where attention-seeking needs override maternal protective instincts. Reports suggesting Papini forced children to inhale rubbing alcohol for illness indicate willingness to harm innocent victims maintaining victim status and sympathy. Mental health experts emphasize this behavior pattern represents severe psychological pathology requiring immediate intervention and ongoing monitoring to protect vulnerable individuals from further harm. True crime psychology examination reveals sophisticated manipulation techniques employed by severe cluster B personality disorder individuals maintaining victim narratives despite overwhelming contradictory evidence. Expert analysis shows how Papini generated genuine emotional responses while telling elaborate lies, demonstrating advanced psychological manipulation abilities that successfully deceived law enforcement, mental health professionals, family members, and community supporters. Season 6 of Nobody Should Believe Me–out weekly starting June 19, available in full for subscribers at launch– covers the extraordinary and tragic saga of the McDaniel family, a real-life Southern Gothic tale of Munchausen by Proxy that spans decades and has left untold damage in its wake.  For the past twelve years, Lisa McDaniel worked for The Guthy Jackson Foundation, a high-profile non-profit, dedicated to a rare disease called NMO (Neuromyelitis Optica), from which Lisa claims her son suffered.  But while Lisa appears to be a sweet Southern mom whose personal tragedy led to her heroic work, this image hides her dark history of abuse. How was Lisa able to keep her felony conviction for poisoning and suffocating her infant daughter hidden? How did her children slip through the cracks of the healthcare and legal systems again and again? What really happened to her son Collin?   Season Six breaks a story that is years in the making and made possible through the astounding courage of Mishelle Roberts. This season ties together many elements introduced in previous seasons: ways that systems fail vulnerable victims, the culture of silence and inaction within hospitals that enables abuse, and the damage done to rare disease advocacy and victims' groups which can devastate families and echo through generations.  *** Order Andrea's new book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy https://read.macmillan.com/lp/the-mother-next-door-9781250284273/ View our sponsors. Why would a person make their own child sick — or lie about it — for attention? In this gripping and eye-opening episode, retired detective Mike Weber joins Gabe Howard to expose the disturbing reality behind Munchausen syndrome by proxy, now medically known as factitious disorder imposed on another. With 40 years of law enforcement experience and over 50 cases investigated, Weber pulls back the curtain on a form of child abuse that's more prevalent — and more chilling — than most people realize. Forget what you think you know from TV dramas. This is not just a mental illness — it often involves calculated crime. Learn how people with this condition can manipulate doctors, deceive family members, and train children to play along in a twisted performance. Discover why nearly all are mothers, how children are affected, and why the justice system struggles to prosecute these complex cases. If you're interested in true crime, psychology, or the darker corners of human behavior, this episode will stay with you long after it ends. “She was given five years probation. That child was left in her care even after criminal charges were filed, even after she was convicted. These offenders have a compulsion very similar to what child sex abuse offenders have. That would be akin to placing a child back in the home with a child sex abuse offender that had offended on that child previously and expecting them to offend no more. That is what family court does quite often in these cases. Because we don't want to believe that a mother could hurt their own child. That is just how we are as a society. We want to believe that all mothers are good and all mothers are not good.”  ~Detective Mike Weber, Author of "The Mother Next Door" Our guest, Detective Mike Weber, has 40 years law enforcement experience, including 15 years as a crimes against children investigator. Detective Weber has investigated over 50 reports of Medical Child Abuse that have led to 13 convictions, 3 cases pending trial. Detective Weber co-authored the APSAC best practice guidelines on Medical Child Abuse titled Munchausen by Proxy: Clinical and Case Management (APSAC Advisor journal March 2018). Weber also authored a separate article in the same issue of the Advisor titled Investigation of Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another and Medical Child Abuse. Detective Weber authored Investigating Medical Child Abuse for the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin journal (August 2018). Detective Weber was awarded the 2016 NCMEC Texas Hero for Children Award for the investigation of Geronimo Aguilar and Medical Child Abuse Cases. Weber is currently assigned to investigate crimes against children for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office and handles all reports of medical child abuse in Tarrant County. Detective Weber contributes to the true crime/educational podcast “Nobody Should Believe Me,” which examines medical child abuse through previous cases.      Slam the Gavel welcomes back Carrie Haight to the podcast. Carrie was last on Season 5, Episodes 185 and 221. Carrie has a Bachelor's in Politics and Pre-law and a Masters in Psychology and has been a licensed therapist for the last 20 years.     On her first podcast, titled, "No One Would Listen," we decided to go in-depth with the details of her case involving CPS to expose the false allegations of Munchausen by Proxy, in Morris County, New Jersey. All of this began with a threatening text from her mother. Recordings prove this was a disgusting set up that almost cost Carrie the loss of her daughter who is genuinely ill.    At present her daughter is under the care of  two major hospitals and a complex medical team under the one hospital. When asked if Carrie will 'just forget this happened,' Carrie answers, "this was life altering and she has lost four years of her life."To Reach Carrie Haight:  dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comSupportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/  YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536  Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com   https://ko-fi.com/maryannpetri*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. We review heralded new Netflix show Adolescence and give our criticisms about its depiction of the cause of male violence against women being, primarily, that boys aren't loved and supported enough by men. Referencing Victoria Smith's book ‘Unkind', we reflect on the myth that violent men are misunderstood men who have not received enough kindness. Why was it such a sympathetic portrayal of a murderous boy? And where are the equivalents for crimes committed overwhelmingly by women, such as Munchausen syndrome by proxy? Why promote the myth that violent men are under loved and under appreciated? Also, the idea male violence against women is a problem of a lack of bonding between men is an odd one, when male bonding and their fraternity is the very basis of patriarchal rule over women that produces MVAW in the first place. Plus, the internet as a ‘thief in the night', fathers general lack of involvement in child rearing, the role of families modelling behaviours to children that are carried on into romantic dynamics later on, the responsibility of mothers to discipline sons, the impact of porn consumption at a young age, our hyper-sexual culture brought about by liberals, and the obvious need to ban young children off social media platforms.

Episode 8 was originally our season finale, but a source we'd been speaking to for months bravely decided to go on the record. This is Andrea's conversation with Chalice Howard, Sophie's friend of nearly 10 years.  With many similarities, being white single moms of adoptive black daughters and a shared faith, Chalice and Sophie found a kinship with each other despite living on opposite sides of the country. Chalice shares about her relationship with Sophie and the girls, the journey to learning about and accepting what Sophie's been doing to C, and why she decided to contact Andrea. She describes how things came to a head with Sophie and gives a touching message to C and M. *** Please remember that this conversation is from Chalice's perspective and experience, so we are not able to fact check certain dates/times, nor her conversation with Sam. We have invited  Sophie and other members of the Hartman family onto the podcast to tell their  side of the story, but at the time of publishing have not received a response.. As always, the door remains open if Sophie or other members of the Hartman family would like to tell their version of events. *** Links and Resources: Click here to view our sponsors. We examine perhaps the most important piece of the complex puzzle of the Hartman case: what Sophie wrote about it in her journals.  We're joined by Dr. James Hamilton, an MBP expert with a PhD in clinical psychology, to walk us through some of Sophie's most chilling journal entries collected in the case files. We also look at Sophie's disturbing internet search history during the time of C's alleged Central precocious puberty (CPP) diagnosis.  After being separated from Sophie, M and C are placed with Sophie's mom and sister. Detective Lee discusses the problems that arise when placing children with people that are most likely going to side with the perpetrator. In April of 2022, C and M are returned to Sophie and criminal charges are subsequently dropped. Andrea offers a key insight into how this might have happened by revealing a surprising member of Sophie's legal team: her sister, Megan Carter.  *** Links and Resources: Dr. James Hamilton: https://www.munchausensupport.com/who-we-are/ Check out Olivia LaVoice's podcast, The Bakersfield Three: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/867-the-bakersfield-three-128074552/ Learn more about our featured non-profit and mutual aid organizations: https://www.nobodyshouldbelieveme.com/nsbm-supports/ Check out You Probably Think This Story's About You: https://brittaniard.com/podcast Click here to view our sponsors. Some of the worst kinds of abuse happen right in front of us—often hidden behind love, care, and even medicine. In this episode, Jill sits down with returning guest Andrea Dunlop and her co-author and colleague Mike Weber to talk about their book, The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy. Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) is a disturbing form of medical child abuse, which we have covered on the podcast before, where a caregiver—usually a mother—makes a child sick or pretends they are, all for attention and sympathy. Andrea, a podcast host and expert on MBP, and Mike, a seasoned law enforcement officer with years of experience in child abuse cases, highlighted what they've learned from investigating these heartbreaking stories.  They explain why these cases are so hard to catch, the legal system's challenges in prosecuting perpetrators, and the chilling similarities between MBP and child sexual abuse. And make sure to stick around until the end of the episode, where Jill and Emily wrap up with a debrief about the emotional toll of confronting such tough realities.  Listen and Learn:  The shocking truth of Munchausen by Proxy and its hidden dynamics The similarities between Munchausen by Proxy and child sexual abuse and the deep manipulation at play How skilled manipulators exploit medical systems and doctors' blind spots to hide abuse. Why even law enforcement, judges, and doctors might fail to recognize this devastating abuse Why are false accusations often believed more than the reality of underreported child abuse cases? Why is it so hard to accept that abuse can happen in 'good' families, and how can we spot it? Sophie insists to police and others that the real problem isn't that she's abusing her daughter but that Seattle Children's–a world class pediatric hospital–simply doesn't understand her daughter's rare condition: Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood.    But according to police interviews, very few people in C's orbit ever witnessed an episode, and if they did, they described symptoms that, alone, are not indicative of AHC. We also hear snippets of interviews stating that Sophie often presented AHC as a terminal illness, a claim that Dr. Zupanc refutes.  Dr. Jill Glick, a child abuse pediatrician from the University of Chicago, returns to talk us through the process hospitals go through when evaluating medical child abuse cases. We also go through a few of the many inconsistencies in Sophie's reports to C's various doctors. Sophie claims that C could die at any moment from AHC: but does she even have it?  *** Links and Resources: Watch Human Timebombs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qbjprd9v9Y More about Dr. Mary Zupanc: https://www.childneurologysociety.org/awards/mary-l-zupanc-md/ More about Dr. Jill Glick: https://www.uchicagomedicine.org/find-a-physician/physician/jill-c-glick Learn more about our featured non-profit and mutual aid organizations: https://www.nobodyshouldbelieveme.com/nsbm-supports/ Check out You Probably Think This Story's About You: https://brittaniard.com/podcast Click here to view our sponsors. In 2020, the Hartmans grow even more isolated as Covid hits: Sophie pulls C out of school citing worsening health and breaks with the church community who've been supporting her and her daughters.  Concerns for abuse grow as Sophie begins to push a new narrative that C has central precocious puberty (CPP), a condition that causes the body to go through puberty prematurely, After making an initial DCF report in 2019 and tracking Sophie's demands for increasingly invasive procedures: Seattle Children's Child Abuse Team files an official report to the Department of Children, Youth, and Families. Her daughters are subsequently placed in protective custody and Sophie is charged with assault of a child in the second degree.  We hear from the Seattle reporter who broke the story, Olivia LaVoice and dig into the extensive documentation from the  investigation with Detective Michael Lee, a major crimes detective in Texas and co-founder of the National Crimes Against Children Investigators Association.. From corporate sponsorships to fundraisers large and small, Sophie Hartman was an expert at raising money for C's various medical devices, mobility aids, and specialized treatments. But were any of these things actually needed?  We hear audio from the police interviews of Sophie's next door neighbors and a school aide who note that they rarely saw C in her wheelchair.  We also take a closer look at C's diagnoses with friend-of -the-show (our not-so-secret Florida doctor) Dr. Bex, joins us briefly to explain the process that pediatricians go through to provide a clinical diagnosis to their patients.  We take a closer look at the narrative Sophie weaves on Instagram, documenting her daughter C's medical journey on both her personal account and where she posts relentlessly about C's health and includes pictures of her G-Tube and Cecostomy Tube. We listen to reports from both Sophie's mother and father stating that C had no trouble eating by mouth, and we're joined by Dr. Jill Glick, a Child Abuse Pediatrician from the University of Chicago, who explains why a child who can eat normally but still has a G-Tube, as requested by a parent, is incredibly troubling. *** Links and Resources: More about Dr. Jill Glick: https://www.uchicagomedicine.org/find-a-physician/physician/jill-c-glick Preorder Andrea and Mike's new book The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy Catch Andrea and Mike at their Seattle Book Launch Event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/andrea-dunlop-and-mike-weber-the-mother-next-door-tickets-1097661478029 Learn more about our featured non-profit and mutual aid organizations: https://www.nobodyshouldbelieveme.com/nsbm-supports/ Check out You Probably Think This Story's About You: https://brittaniard.com/podcast Click here to view our sponsors.
