If your child was born between 2018 and 2022, should they have their primitive reflexes screened? In this episode, we explore how the COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted child development and why Rachel believes primitive reflex screenings should become a routine part of early childhood care. From pregnancy stress and delayed services to increased screen time, fewer social opportunities, and less movement, they discuss how these experiences may have affected (and continue to affect) kids today. We also explain what primitive reflexes are, how retained reflexes can impact learning, behavior, coordination, and emotional regulation, and what signs parents, therapists, and educators may want to watch for. This conversation isn't meant to cause fear or point blame. We want people to get curious, focus on early identification, and give kids the support they need to thrive. Thanks for listening

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Audrey: Hi Dr. Cabral, What are your thoughts on retained reflexes? My almost 3 yr old girl has extreme outbursts every day that involves lots of screaming and yelling. I was told retained reflexes could be the problem. She is extremely smart and started talking at a very young age. I know she is too young for any heavy metal detoxes or parasite cleanses so I'm not sure how to help her. I also have a 4 yr old and a NB so having some peace in the home would be nice. Thanks Cathy: Dear Dr Cabral, I'm so thankful for you! In the past 1.5yrs I've lost 30lbs and still losing more. God bless you! Anonymous: Hi Dr. C — Big thanks to you and your amazing team for all you do. Question about purchasing pre-owned items: Are there any health concerns about buying used clothing items or bedding (sheets)? I always wash them before using them. Some people are grossed out about "used bedding," but it seems to be the same as going to a hotel: those aren't new sheets on hotel beds. Thanks. Sarah: Hello doc! I saw somebody say that red dots (cherry angiomas) on the body can be due to poor bile flow. Curious on your take on this? Cheers! Basak: I had a quick question I wanted to ask. I divide my time between the Netherlands and Miami, and I maintain the same healthy habits in both locations—clean eating, daily exercise, minimal alcohol, and consistent sleep. I generally feel well and have no other complaints. However, I have noticed that whenever I return to Miami, I consistently experience lower abdominal bloating. I was wondering whether it is possible that environmental factors—such as differences in air quality, water, or other environmental exposures in the U.S.—could be contributing to this reaction. When emotional outbursts, anxiety, or learning struggles show up, the root cause isn't always obvious. In this episode, I sit down with Niki McGlynn, a UK-based homeopath specialising in primitive reflex integration and ADHD coaching, to unpack how early movement patterns shape the nervous system. We explore how retained primitive reflexes can affect emotional regulation, focus, and learning, including links to dyslexia and ADHD. Niki breaks down key reflexes like the Moro and neck reflexes and explains what their impact can look like in everyday life. She also shares practical, movement-based ways parents can support integration in both children and adults. Episode Highlights: 02:16 - When personal healing sparks a career shift 06:09 - Understanding Primitive Reflexes 07:24 - Is it ever too late to integrate reflexes? 10:12 - Seeing Irlen syndrome from a new perspective 11:41 - What mums should look out for to make sure reflexes are properly integrated 14:35 - The timeline of primitive reflex development 16:59 - Understanding the fear paralysis reflex 19:31 - How urinary incontinence links to spinal reflexes 20:35 - How homeopathy and movement complement each other 23:18 - When parenting courses don't feel enough 28:04 - Niki's Daughter's Dyslexia Journey 31:05 - Why bad handwriting might be a reflex issue 35:04 - Common misconception about primitive reflexes 38:10 - Finding Practitioners for Reflex Integration About my Guests: Niki McGlynn trained as a homeopath in 2000, she always had an interest in neurodiversity, writing her dissertation on Can Homeopathy Improve Communication in Children with Autism. After she and her daughter both received a dyslexia diagnosis in 2012 she looked for additional help and discovered the incredible world of primitive reflexes. She began using primitive reflex integration techniques with her existing clients, continued training to be an instructor and teach other therapists and now runs her own training. Understanding primitive reflexes, how they manifest and how to encourage them to integrate has been an incredible journey that sits very comfortably alongside homeopathy as it is another truly holistic practice. Clients can use simple movements at home with their child or on themselves which gives them some responsibility for their own care and will help remedies do their work. Niki runs regular training courses all over the country and is happy to provide training to any group of people if they can organise a venue. In this message, Matt VanCleave provides a practical five-step framework for managing anger when it threatens to take control. Drawing from Proverbs, James, and Ephesians, he explains how to interrupt anger’s hijacking effect through stopping, asking the right questions, listening, rethinking our thoughts, and taking wise action. Rather than suppressing or exploding in anger, we can learn to rule our emotions through intentional practices rooted in biblical wisdom. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about developing new reflexes that help us respond with strength and self-control.
My guest today is Dr. Robert Melillo. Dr. Melillo shares his 35-year journey from athletic injuries and chiropractic roots to developmental cognitive neuroscience and founder of the Melillo Method. Driven by his own children's challenges and a deep commitment to preserving their extraordinary gifts, he explains Autism as a treatable developmental imbalance rooted in brain immaturity—caused by retained primitive reflexes, disrupted right-left asymmetry, and poor transition from short-range to long-range connectivity. Emphasizing a bottom-up, root-cause approach over symptom management, he describes how remediating reflexes, stimulating right-brain activity, and balancing networks can unlock speech, motor control, and potential in non-speaking individuals—highlighting the human brain's unique evolutionary vulnerability and adaptability while offering hope for meaningful change without erasing unique brilliance.Dr. Melillo https://www.drrobertmelillo.comYT https://www.youtube.com/@themelillomethodInstagram https://www.instagram.com/drrobertmelillo/White Board Series: Serotonin's Role in Development for Sensory Maps (not mood) https://youtu.be/Pbovstb82i4White Board Series: Basal Ganglia (Go/No-GO), Neural Correlates, & "Motivation" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTW8CSPVEGcWhite Board Series: Basal Ganglia No-Go area & Arkeypallidial Cells https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHZ_5HthUWsDaylight Computer Company, use "autism" for $50 off at https://buy.daylightcomputer.com/autismChroma Light Devices, use "autism" for 10% discount at https://getchroma.co/?ref=autismFig Tree Christian Golf Apparel & Accessories, use "autism" for 10% discount at https://figtreegolf.com/?ref=autism0:00 Dr. Robert Melillo5:24 The Nature of Gifts & Vulnerabilities with Autism15:26 The Evolution of the Human Brain & Bipedalism; CNS is to move the living organism; Left Brain, Right Brain25:20 Functional Connectivity & Movements; Left Brain-Right Brain36:46 The Immature Brain; Autism means "Self"38:54 Interventions for Maturing the Brain & Movements42:46 The Melillo Method & Upstream Individualized Interventions47:47 GI and the Nervous Systems; Excitation/Inhibition52:21 Melillo Method55:40 Giving a Voice to Non-Verbals; Sensory Map, Somatosensory & Homunculus1:03:00 The Basal Ganglia & Motor Movements1:06:34 Bridging Clinical & Neuroscience Research & MethodsX: https://x.com/rps47586YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGxEzLKXkjppo3nqmpXpzuAemail: info.fromthespectrum@gmail.com
Primitive reflexes are involuntary responses that a newborn is born with to help them survive. These reflexes naturally disappear as your baby's brain matures. In cases of injury, these reflexes can show back up and are a sign of a larger issue.Host Jessica Stewart-Gonzalez sits down with Dr. Karen Pryor, a physical therapist, to cover what parents need to know about primitive reflexes.Host:Jessica Stewart-Gonzalez is the Chief of the Office of Children's Health at the Arizona Department of Health Services. In this episode of the Experience Miracles podcast, Dr. Tony Ebel discusses retained primitive reflexes and their role in neurodevelopmental disorders. He challenges the common perception that retained primitive reflexes are a primary root cause of issues like autism and ADHD. Instead, Dr. Ebel argues that retained reflexes are a secondary or tertiary symptom of underlying nervous system dysfunction, specifically sympathetic dominance and subluxation. He emphasizes the importance of addressing these root causes through Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care before pursuing other interventions.-----Key Timestamps:[00:02:00] - Overview of retained primitive reflexes and their perceived importance[00:05:00] - Dr. Ebel's background in functional neurology training[00:08:00] - Explanation of the "perfect storm" concept in neurodevelopmental disorders[00:11:00] - Dr. Ebel's experience with functional neurology and its limitations[00:14:00] - Discussion on the potential negative effects of focusing solely on primitive reflexes[00:16:00] - The sequence of neurological dysfunction and its relation to retained reflexes[00:22:00] - The importance of neurologically focused chiropractic care as a first intervention[00:25:00] - The three R's of neurological healing: Release, Rebuild, Restore[00:28:00] - Explanation of neurological stability and its importance[00:30:00] - The role of other therapies (PT, OT, speech) after achieving neurological stability[00:32:00] - Why addressing nervous system dysfunction can improve the effectiveness of other interventions-- Follow us on Socials: Instagram: @pxdocs Facebook: Dr. Tony Ebel & The PX Docs Network Youtube: The PX Docs For more information, visit PXDocs.com to read informative articles about the power of Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, September 26 was the most popular day to be born over the last two decades, which falls 39 weeks and two days after Christmas day. Babies are born with certain reflexes that result in involuntary movements. These are called primitive reflexes, and the movements happen automatically without the baby sending a message to their brain. Such reflexes develop during the foetal period and indicate that the baby's brain is functioning well. What are some examples? Isn't it just the cutest when a baby grabs your finger? Do these reflexes remain with babies as they develop into children? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Did your child skip some developmental milestones or seem a little behind in hitting them? Do they struggle with things like catching or throwing a ball, playing sports, or even making friends? Or maybe you were that kid once upon a time? In today's episode, I'm chatting with pediatric occupational therapy assistant Rachel Harrington all about primitive reflexes—what they are, how and when they develop, and how they impact both kids and adults in daily life. We dive into how these reflexes get kick-started during the birthing process, how many are guided by the visual system, and why it's so important to integrate them as children grow. We also talk about how primitive reflexes can actually come back after trauma or as part of the aging process, acting as a protective mechanism. Rachel breaks down the signs of poor reflex integration—things like ongoing anxiety, vestibular dysfunction, feeling ungrounded, poor left/right coordination, ADHD, bedwetting, IBS, trouble sitting still, speech or articulation challenges, and more. We nerd out a bit on the neuroanatomy behind primitive reflexes and get into practical tools like breathing exercises, motor control drills, and vestibular activities. We even chat about how these concepts overlap with applied neuro training. Plus, Rachel shares activity ideas for kids who struggle with emotional regulation and explains how to choose drills based on whether a child is over- or under-responsive. Huge thanks to Rachel for sharing her deep knowledge of pediatric occupational therapy and for creating such incredible resources for both parents and practitioners. “I've been doing the Moro and FPR exercises for three months but haven't seen any positive results. Why?”This is a common question we hear from parents, therapists, and caregivers working on primitive reflex integration—especially with the Moro Reflex and Fear Paralysis Reflex (FPR).In this episode, we break down what these two powerful reflexes are, how they impact emotional regulation and sensory processing, and the hidden reasons why you might not be seeing progress even after consistent reflex work. If you've been feeling frustrated or stuck in your reflex journey, this episode will give you clarity and next steps.LINKSWe'd love to answer your questions on the podcast! In this episode, we explore how to track progress beyond reflex testing by looking at functional, everyday signs of improvement. Reflex tests are important, but they don't always tell the whole story. Sometimes a child may have several retained reflexes, but those reflexes don't significantly interfere with their day-to-day life!If you've ever wondered whether your reflex integration work is truly helping, this episode will help you connect the dots between reflexes, functional outcomes, and real-life independence. This episode will help you shift your focus from testing and exercises alone to looking at real-life skills—because progress isn't just about what happens in therapy, it's about creating lasting change in daily life.LINKSWe'd love to answer your questions on the podcast! In this episode, Dr. Rachel is joined by Dani Perrecone and Paloma Garcia Cruz, co-founders of In the Cortex, a program that helps children and adults overcome hidden neurological blocks through brain reorganization.Dani and Paloma share their personal stories of living with disorganized brains, how they discovered the power of primitive reflex integration, and why so many behavioral, learning, and emotional struggles actually trace back to missed developmental movements in infancy.Together, they explore the science of primitive reflexes, why retained reflexes can sabotage learning and emotional regulation, and how recreating early-life movements can unlock neuroplasticity at any age. From meltdowns over shoes to road rage in adulthood, they explain how unresolved reflexes shape lifelong patterns, and how parents can finally help their kids move past them.We also dive into the systemic issues fueling these challenges, from modern birth interventions and overuse of baby gear to ever-expanding diagnostic criteria. With refreshing honesty and compassion, Dani and Paloma encourage parents to release guilt, embrace hope, and reclaim the natural movements that wire the brain for success.Highlights:Dani and Paloma's journey from disorganized brains to brain reorganization leadersWhat primitive reflexes are, and why they must integrate properlySigns of retained reflexes in children (meltdowns, sensory issues, attention struggles)How reflexes influence posture, coordination, and emotional regulationNeuroplasticity as the foundation of hope, brains can change at any ageThe link between trauma, retained reflexes, and emotional triggersWhy modern lifestyles (swaddling, walkers, devices) disrupt brain developmentPractical ways parents can support reflex integration at homeConscious parenting, grace, and breaking cycles of inherited stressCase stories of children and adults transformed through brain reorganizationAbout Dani & PalomaDani Perrecone and Paloma Garcia Cruz are the founders of In the Cortex, an innovative program that rewires the brain by addressing retained primitive reflexes. With backgrounds in brain reorganization, child development, and neurodevelopmental disorders, they've helped countless families transform learning, behavior, and emotional well-being. Their mission is simple: empower parents and children with tools to unlock the brain's full potential through movement, connection, and conscious parenting.Website: www.inthecortex.comUse code : drrachel for a % off the next group class.

Freedom doesn't arrive when you finally “figure it all out”—it arrives the moment you move. We've built mental walls around the idea that creativity is genetic and strength is inherited. But imagine a world where every step, stretch, or stumble is a tiny act of liberation, welding new circuits of possibility in your brain. Picture the mountaineer navigating a cliff, or a child learning to throw—a dance as ancient as humanity itself, and just as transformative. The lesson isn't in chasing overnight genius, but in discovering that each deliberate movement is a brushstroke of reinvention. Reimagine exercise as a tool for mental experimentation, not just fitness. View setbacks in coordination as invitations to design new approaches, rather than signs to stop. Use the act of practicing anything—sport, art, language—as a metaphor for shaping your narrative. What will you change, today, when you realize that movement is the first story you tell yourself about what's possible? “Movement drives brain development, and very rarely do you see movement when there is a screen involved.”Primitive reflexes play a critical role in child development, but what happens when they don't integrate as expected? In this episode, we're joined by pediatric occupational therapist and ADHD specialist Jenna Downs from Stronger Roots Therapy. Together, we explore how these early reflexes shape motor, sensory, and visual development—and how their persistence can mimic or worsen symptoms often linked to ADHD, learning difficulties, and vision challenges. From crawling and handwriting struggles to posture, screen time, and the impact of retained reflexes on focus and reading, Jenna breaks down what parents and educators should know. Most importantly, she shares practical strategies and hope for families navigating these concerns, highlighting the power of neuroplasticity and early interventions. If you've ever wondered whether your child's fidgeting, difficulty concentrating, or visual struggles might have deeper developmental roots, this conversation will open your eyes to new possibilities for growth and support.(00:00) Intro(00:38) Meet Jenna Downs: Pediatric Occupational Therapist(02:22) Nature's role in growth(03:10) The impact of screen time(04:23) What's happening to handwriting skills?(08:20) Why risk-taking matters(11:40) Social skills and the COVID-19 effect(13:11) Primitive reflexes explained(16:27) The Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex(21:26) What is proprioceptive feedback?(22:23) Building core strength: Athleticism vs. Core Stability(25:11) 4D Built to Read Digital Program (26:06) ADHD and retained reflexes - The crawling connection (30:27) Addressing retained reflexes (32:53) Parental role in neuroplasticity (38:43) ResourcesRESOURCESFollow strongerrootstherapyVisit strongerrootstherapy.comCheck out harkla.coCheck out our Digital Programs4D Built for LifeStart your FREE TRIAL today 4D Built to Read Digital ProgramConcussion RecoveryBuilt to DriveFollow us at 4D Vision Gym on Facebook and Instagram @4dvisiongymvt for the latest news and updates. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Sophie: I have heard that you recommend Wild Yam Cream for hormonal issues - can you tell me more about the product? Roman: Hi Dr. Cabral, I was just listening to your podcast where you listed all the different types of magnesium and their specific benefits. I really appreciated the breakdown — but I was surprised that you didn't mention sucrosomal magnesium. Is there a specific reason why it was left out? From what I understand, it's considered one of the most absorbable forms available. I've been using it for over a year now (about 300 mg before bed), and it seems to work really well for me.Just curious to hear your thoughts on this form, since I respect your approach and depth of research. Thanks so much — take care! John: Hi doc huge fan. I'm in my 50s and have thinning hair I already take your hair support but I wanted to know since I don't have money for the higher dose hat that you recommend would the red light panel from my therasage sauna have the same affect putting it on my head thanks Larissa: Hello Dr. Cabral thank you for providing so many answers to hard to answer problems. My question is how can I reset my sense of smell. I lost my sense of taste and smell after COVID for at least a year. It slowly came back, but some tastes and smells were very different than I remembered. My main problem is that I smell chemicals much stronger, so things like comercial soaps and perfumes are very unappealing to me. I have eliminated all offensive products from my use, but I can't tell other people what they should use. Is there a way to tame down my sensitivity to these strong offending smells? Thank you, Lorrie Ashley: Hi Dr Cabral, you are an inspiration and thank you for all that you do. I am an IHP1 and busy eith IHP 2 aiming to change career paths sometime in the near future. My question is about my son, he has had nervous system dystegulation since birth with what i would call sensory processing issues. He is now 7 and has a lot of anxiety, dark thoughts and mood swings. I came across retained reflexes and found a practitioner to help him with this as he has many retained reflexes (Dr Mellilio method). I have not seen any show on this topic and was wandering your thoughts and if you could consider covering this topic in a future show? my side question is on the heavy metal detox: What foods have successfully masked the taste of the protocol especially the universal binder for your daughters? The vagus nerve is fundamental to our health and vitality, coordinating critical functions from the precise heartbeat we need to exercise or rest to the balance of appetite and digestion. Made up of 200,000 fibers, the vagus nerve sends thousands of electrical signals every second between your brain and your most important organs. Yet despite its essential role in life, important vagus nerve functions have eluded centuries of scientific investigation. Now neurosurgeon and researcher Dr. Kevin Tracey has discovered the previously unknown power of the vagus nerve to reverse inflammation, balance the immune system, treat chronic illness, and keep our organs humming together in harmony. In The Great Nerve: The New Science of the Vagus Nerve and How to Harness Its Healing Reflexes (Penguin, 2025), Dr. Tracey shows us how stimulating the vagus nerve with a tiny electrical implant has the potential to reverse life-altering diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, MS, diabetes, obesity, stroke, depression, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. If this sounds too good to believe, Dr. Tracey shares stories of patients who have gone from being nearly bedridden to running and dancing, along with the science that makes possible these recoveries. He also explains the evidence for lifestyle strategies like ice baths, meditation, exercise, and breathwork that can maintain and improve vagus nerve function.By opening the door to the new field of neuroimmunology, The Great Nerve not only revolutionizes how we understand and treat disease, it gives us unprecedented hope for our health. This is the story of your body's ability to heal itself. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Retained primitive reflexes are critical to examine, especially in kiddos with neurodevelopmental challenges. Dr Rubin explains an efficient way to check for them.
Do you have Kingdom reflexes? This week Pastor Steve concluded our ReFormation series with a message from Jesus' Sermon On the Mount.Matthew 7:24Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.In Jesus' closing parable, both men heard his teachings. Both men were building, presumably with the same materials. Both men experienced the same storm. The only difference was the foundation. 1) Foundations are invisible. Both men are hearing the teaching and building houses that APPEAR SIMILAR. The difference came down to one word: PRACTICE.“Most Christians are educated way beyond the level of their obedience. We don't need to know more. We need to do more with what we know.”Pastor Mark BattersonWhen we come to Jesus, we have access to a grace that can transform. Spiritual disciplines are the means by which we access that grace on a daily basis.2) Foundations are deep.Practice builds a pattern of accessing God's wisdom and grace that goes so deep it becomes REFLEX. Hebrews 5:14But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to distinguish between good and evil. Not every practice has to be a success. The most important part about practice is showing up.3) Foundations are revealed in storms. It's impossible to work on your foundation in the middle of a storm. But when you practice building on the rock of God's grace and truth, your house will stand through every storm!
What if your biggest emotional blocks weren't just about pain… but about protection? This powerful insight is at the heart of Part 2 of Brandy's session with the beautiful and insightful Dr. Kim D'Eramo where deep emotional patterns are revealed and rewired live. Even if you haven't listened to Part 1, this episode will speak directly to you—especially if you've been doing the inner work but still feel stuck. Brandy helps uncover how subconscious emotional reflexes, like guilt, anger, and fear of failure, can silently hold pain in place… and how to finally reprogram them for good. In this episode, you'll discover: Why healing doesn't stick until emotional reflexes are rewired How to release emotional triggers and feel safe—without controlling your emotions The hidden reasons we stay stuck in patterns, even when we “know better” A simple shift that changes everything in your relationships, your body, and your life What it really means to feel safe, connected, and emotionally free Whether you're new to this work or deep in your healing path, this session offers life-changing insights you can apply right away. And if you do go back to Part 1 you'll appreciate even more of the context and transformation but it's not required to gain immense insights from this episode.
