Send us a textThis week on Entertain This!, Hayden, Mitch, and Tom boldly venture into the cinematic fever dream that is John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China. We're talking about a movie where the hero is arguably the sidekick, ancient Chinese magic involves lightning bolts and floating heads, and the true protagonist might just be Kurt Russell's unparalleled confidence in the face of utter bewilderment. Join us as we try to unpack how this glorious, nonsensical masterpiece manages to be simultaneously one of the greatest action-comedies ever made and a solid argument for why truck drivers should probably stick to driving trucks. We'll dissect Lo Pan's surprisingly convoluted evil plan and ponder whether Jack Burton ever actually understood what was going on. So, buckle up, grab your own questionable beverages, and prepare for a deep dive into the reflex-fueled chaos. At the end of it all, we'll ask you: Did Big Trouble in Little China... We're in Big Trouble in Little Five Points because our live theatre project, the Atlanta Fringe Festival is this week! That means we haven't had time to watch AI's last assignment, Proof (1991). But in the meantime, here is our unreleased pilot episode, where A.I. made us watch John Carpenter's masterpiece Big Trouble in Little China! Long-haul trucker and himbo babe Jack Burton may not be the best action hero, but he's an incredible improvisor! Meanwhile the magical demon Lo Pan throws major sass while trying to live forever!
A rollicking good time! John Carpenter delivers an absurd cult classic, with help from super trucker Jack Burton! Cory Kesselring joins Luke & Corrye to discuss the fight choreography, the location of Little China, and the downside of the often forgotten prelude. Among the other hot topics: the three Rayden villains and their comically-huge hats; the imitation Kurt Russell is doing throughout the entire film; the warm blanket that is Egg Shen (Victor Wong); and the consistenly punchable Lo Pan. PLUS: The Chumps bid farewell...sort of.
This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to analyze a trio of “cult classics” from the actor/director pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Starting with 1981's Escape From New York starring Mr. Russell, Donald Pleasance, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Isaac Hayes and Season Hubley, on to 1982's The Thing starring Russell, Donald Moffat, Keith David, Richard Dysart, David Clennon, T.K, Carter, Richard Masur, Charles Hallahan and Wilford Brimley, And finally 1986's Big Trouble in Little China starring Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Donald Li, Kate Burton, Suzee Pai and Victor Wong, My two guests are the only pair who would be up for such a comprehensive cinematic showdown : Lit major and lil' Sis Roseanne Caputi and Actor Funnyman Photobug, Alex Robertson. Before we run the gauntlet, the synopses: In Escape From New Yorkex soldier and current convict Snake Plisskin is forced under the threat of death by government agent Hauk to rescue the President of the United States after a group of insurgents cause Air Force One to crash in New York city which by 1997 has become a walled off maximum security prison. The Thing catalogues the paranoia, fear and sheer horror that ensues when a shape-shifting alien invades an American Antarctic Research Facility. Big Trouble in Little China follows the mystic, martial-arts laden misadventures of blowhard truck driver Jack Burton, who, on a routine stop in San Francisco's Chinatown wins a bet over his buddy Wang Chi. In order to collect his money, Jack follows Wang to the airport to meet Wang's beautiful green-eyed betrothed bride Miao Yin who is summarily kidnapped by the evil ancient supernatural gang Lord David Lo Pan. Lo Pan, for his part, inhabits a broken down and decrepit old body and can only move as a spirit in his young and powerful form. In order to attain full strength and fleshly form, Lo Pan needs Wang's green-eyed bride to break his century old curse. With the help of lawyer Gracie Law and a troupe of warriors led by magical Egg Shen, Jack and Wang charge into David Lo Pan's compound to stage a daring rescue. Which film rates the highest?Find out!

The martial artist, instructor, writer, actor, painter, fight choreographer, singer and all-round entertainer Eric Lee got his nickname - the 'King of Kata' - after winning a string of trophies throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s. He has over 100 world titles, and was the undefeated forms and weapons champion from 1970 to 1974. Over the years, his kung fu demonstrations escalated to include music, lighting, comedy, acting and sound effects, and his entertaining mix of martial arts and performance wowed audiences around the world. He would quickly become a regular fixture in the fight press, and a career in action movies followed. One of his earliest roles was with the director, Sam Peckinpah, on 'The Killer Elite' in 1975, but perhaps Lee's most famous role was in John Carpenter's cult classic, 'Big Trouble in Little China' (1986), playing a villain in Lo Pan's gang. As an actor and fight choreographer, he has appeared in over 80 movies and TV productions, and worked with many of the best martial artists in the action genre - including Jackie Chan, Cynthia Rothrock, Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, Bolo Yeung, Billy Blanks, and many more. Now in his mid-70s, Eric may have retired from competition, but he continues to pick up new interests and hobbies. In this wide-ranging conversation, we discuss his early years in China and his training in Hong Kong; the feedback he received when introducing kung fu to American audiences; his move from stunt performer to actor to working behind-the-scenes; and his love of all things music. Eric is also a published author; his instructional books include '3 Sectional Staff', 'The Broadsword', and 'Fight Back: Your Guide to Self-Defence'. His latest book, an autobiography called 'The Journey of an Artist', is out now.LINKSEric Lee's website: https://ericlee.com/Eric Lee on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0497224/Eric Lee on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@grandmasterericlee4240Eric Lee profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/EricLeeProfileBuy 'The Journey of an Artist' by Grandmaster Eric Lee on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Journey-Artist-Grandmaster-Eric-Lee-ebook/dp/B08L8T7WXY'Big Trouble in Little China' (1986) review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: http://bit.ly/BigTroubleInLittleChina Hosted on Acast.

"Big Trouble in Little China" is a film of such greatness that Cool Movies Darth brings in two Internet powerhouses to chat about it. Friend of the podcast Andrew Tiede from Baking While Baked returns to represent the Midwest and Jorge from the "Not a Strong Start" podcast represents the West Coast. It is CM Darth's attempt to take the best of two cultures to properly honor The Horror Master John Carpenter and the wild aura of the eighties.
“Have you ever had trifle at a Chinese restaurant?” A fantastical wire-fu battle rages as the panel of peril tries to watch this week's film, John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China. We then try to improve upon the villain's diabolical plan for the honour of choosing next week's film and hosting the pod. Released in 1986, Big Trouble In Little China marks the fourth collaboration between fan favourite director-actor duo John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Also starring Dennis Dun, James Hong and Kim Cattrall, it was not a hit at the time but has since gained a reputation as a cult classic. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmug65rbHh0 ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Sorcerer Lo Pan must find, marry and sacrifice a green-eyed girl in order to break an ancient curse. Using dark Chinese magics and the clout of the Wing Kong Exchange, only one vaguely incompetent all-American hero (and his supremely competent Chinese ‘sidekick') can stop Lo Pan and save the day. Was the film a hit with the panel? Just how could they improve upon magical perfection? And whom will be crowned this week's most diabolical?

It's a deep-dive into John Carpenter's pulp adventure classic, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA! "You are not put upon this world to... GET IT!"

Should you watch ‘Big Trouble in Little China' from 1986? Part 2 of our 2 part review. "They told Jack Burton to go to hell...and that's exactly where he's going!" ... Well, that and an underground realm filled with creatures, Mortal Kombat characters and a floating eyeball brain that can lick his own eyes??? There is nothing like this our there before or since this came out and I hope that "The Rock" doesn't get his wish in remaking this. I hope Lo Pan haunts his dreams for that.

Escaping the deserts of the American mid-west to the haunted underworld realms of Chinatown, San Francisco, this is THE LAST ACTION HEROES PODCAST Season 2 and we're talking to whoever's listening out there. We're heading into our second episode with a heavy hitter (and even louder mouth), of the 80's as they take a shot at the TLAH leaderboard with a machine gun in one hand, a knife in the other and the coolest vest/jeans combo Hollywood has ever seen. We are of course discussing JACK BURTON (who?!) from John Carpenters beloved cult classic BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986).After making a delivery and catching up with some old friends in San Francisco, Jack Burton accompanies his friend Wang Chi home to collect on an outstanding debt. En route they make a detour to the airport to pick up Wang's fiancée Miao Yin who is arriving from China that morning. But things go awry when Miao is very publicly captured by a Chinese street gang.

It has been a long time coming, but NY favorites Godmaker have finally graced Diary of Doom with their presence. Professional noise-maker Pete Ross and unintentional peg-legged pirate Jon Lane address all manner of things Godmaker centric and not, such as learning music via threat, Portishead fights, catharsis, chugga squee origins, elusive second guitarists, why Hull is the standard for good metal, music as religion, Kirk Windstein stamp of approval, trolling with Marvin Gaye, Icing and the many forms of bad alcohol, big ass hammers, and poking your intestines back in. Godmaker has their only show on 2021 coming up on October 30th at Trans Pecos in support of Burning Tongue, Lo-Pan, and Sasquatch, so come on out and get loosey on Goosey Night! Tickets here. Support Godmaker and if you still want a hammer, you can get one of those too! Track featured is their cover of Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh?" from The Wall.

The duo fly home planning their next move. Meanwhile, Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Huntress, breaks into Logan's loft, tracking down leads to Creed H. Quinn, the Hyena. As she snoops through the loft, she comes across the greatest secret of all: the costumes of Dark Claw and thus his true identity. Before she can leave, Dark Claw enters through a passage way behind the closet and pins the Huntress to the ground. Undecided what to do with the intruder, the two begin to talk and soon Dark Claw shares his secrets. He is indeed Logan, a by product of an experiment that he and three others volunteered for, one of the others was his one time friend Creed H. Quinn. Dark Claw shows her the Barrow, his lair and center for his war on crime. This decision doesn't sit well with Sparrow at first, but soon the three begin looking for clues Hyena might have set back at the Gotham Gazette. They discover two clues, AF1 meaning Air Force One, and NaCN for Sodium Cyonide a deadly poison. The three head immediately to Air Force One, and arrive just as Hyena makes his move. With the gas filling the plane, Dark Claw corners his foe and cuts a whole in the plane, jettisoning Hyena, Dark Claw, and the gas. - via DC Wikia" SPIDER-BOY Spider-Boy is a super-hero in the Amalgam Universe.
