Recorded: November 03, 2025 Will Compton and Taylor Lewan welcome College Baseball powerhouse Tony Vitello, former head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers and now the new manager of the San Francisco Giants! Taylor Lewan kicks off the pod by further apologizing for his Spooktober showing. However Will Compton presses him to a point that Taylor defends his title as the king of Spooktober. The boys then recap their Halloweens with the family, sharing stories of trick-or-treating with their kids and the best costumes they saw over the weekend. Followed by Taylor fighting for his life on the bus explaining his battle with gout. Afterward Vitello hops on the pod and gives the boys an incredible interview. Renowned for his fiery intensity, innovative culture, and championship run, Tony Vitello will now look to translate his skills to the MLB. Tony opens up about his leadership style and team culture building, as well as a few recruiting secrets, game-day rituals (including the infamous leopard-print fur coat for home runs), and how he builds a winning mindset from the ground up. Along the way: light-hearted stories, locker room moments, and unexpected insights into what it takes to win at the highest level of college baseball and what it will take to win a World Series after what we all just witnessed between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays. You may not have heard of Dispatch but after this podcast you surely will wish you had. Dispatch is a new interactive narrative from former Telltale Games devs about superheroes in a modern day office setting. It's one part Suicide Squad and one part The Office. AdHoc Studios shines in delivering animation that looks just like the best TV shows out there as well as some stellar writing and voice acting. We review Episodes 1-4 with no spoilers but hope that you jump out there and buy it because this is perfect for casual gamers. Bite sized chunks that are easy to digest and keep you wanting more!It was Spooktober this past month, so Brett reviewed Choo Choo Charles from Two Star Games and talked about how one hit from that team couldn't help them in their recent flop with Cuff Bust. There's still a chance for redemption...but is it too little too late?Austin plays Silent Hill f and although the game looks great and plays well, he can't seem to get into it to finish it. It's a fun game for some people but for him it's not quite hitting the mark, despite the solid atmosphere and interesting story.Jason and Brett both play Outlast Trials. We missed this game when it first dropped but now with a new "Invasion" update we're in it and loving every bit of it. This game is dark, it's bloody and full of chaos but it's a blast to play with friends. 4 player co op and the new PVP mode where you can play as another player makes for a fun time.Lastly, we revisit Battlefield 6. Season 1 dropped with a new map, lots of new updates, a battle pass, a new mode and several gadgets and weapons. They also finally dropped the free to play Battle Royale now called "RedSec." It's great and we can't wait for you to hear all about it.Show Notes:1:10 - Housekeeping2:49 - Dispatch: A Superhero Story for Busy Gamers24:28 - Choo-Choo Charles to Cuff Bust: The Rise and Stumble of Two Star Games42:37 - Silent Hill f Review1:03:57 - Is The Outlast Trials Still Worth Playing in 2025?1:20:57 - Battlefield Redsec Battle Royale and Season 11:51:57 - Upcoming Video Game Releases Become a part of the conversation! Shirleon & Kathryn join Melvin to discuss Weapons, Zach Cregger's sort-of-sophomore flick after Barbarian! Horror fans have been eating good throughout 2025, and the gang explores whether the film continues this trend. They also ponder the wide variety of themes throughout, attempting to make sense of a dense and non-linear story.Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 28-minutes discussing Elizabeth Olson saying that they only want to be in theatrical releases, the dynamics and differing optics between streaming-only vs theatrical-first flicks, and if streaming as a form of primary distribution has improved or diminished the aura of the Hollywood star. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Kicking things off by briefly chatting Barbarian, as it helps set the groundwork for Cregger's current style.Everyone agrees: Weapons is good. But, not everyone agrees its great.Kathryn, "I wish this movie was structured differently."Melvin points to something he read in the IMDB trivia to explain why the film feels a bit... discombobulated. There are 2 plot contrivances that Melvin was a little irritated by, so he complains about them. The gang proposes some rewrites, because that's what podcasts do!Kathryn stepped away frustrated by the middle of the film, calling it "irresponsible".Contrasting Justine & Aunt GladysThe beginning of the film is strong, but the ending of the film is incredible.Recommendations:Keep your eyes peeled for New York Times "Cookie Week 2025" (Past Recipes Kathryn recommends: Hibiscus-Spiraled Ginger Cookies & Peppermint Brownie Cookies)A Lonely Broadcast: Book One by Kel Byron (2023) (Novel)A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L Peck (2012) (Novel)WNUF Halloween Special (2013) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! It was Drew's pick today and he decided to go with a film that was UNSETTLING. From the legendary director Alex Garland, comes a very creepy, unsettling film called, “Annihilation.” Characters in this film enter The Shimmer and crazy unexplained things begin to happen. Featuring Natalie Portman, This film was absolutely crazy and we REALLY dove into it. This week I'm concluding my Spooktober series by covering the story of the mysterious "ghost ship" Mary Celeste. The Mary Celeste was discovered adrift and unmanned around 400 nautical miles from the Azores Islands in December of 1872. The last recording in the ships log had been made some nine days before and it appeared that, since then, the ship had been sailing itself. But what happened to Captain Briggs, his wife Sarah, and their two year old daughter Sophia? What happened to the other seven crew members? As evidence is examined - a missing life boat, 9 empty barrels of alcohol, a disassembled bilge pump - the answers become no clearer. Join me this week to learn the mystery of the "ghost ship" Mary Celeste and to take a closer look at the clues left behind and the theories that emerged. Support the show! Cockroach milk for Spooktober. STAY HERE. Don't tell me you like haunted houses and slasher films but can't listen to a lovely conversation about how cockroaches make milk to feed their young. It's one of the most nutritious substances on Earth, and I own some. Sort of. Coem along for a brief and enthralling discussion from two researchers, Dr. Joshua Benoit and Dr. Sinead English, all about why and how some insects give live birth and nurse their young. What does it taste like? Will we replicate it for barista use? And why didn't I get to eat any on TV? From the eerie performances to the quiet dread that creeps under your skin, we'll unpack what makes Lake Mungo a masterclass in slow-burn terror — and why it still gets under our skin even 4 viewings later.Grab the movie (queue it up before you press play on the episode, Matthew forgot to count you in!), hit play, and experience the dread and the goosebumps with us — Weird Crap in Australia style. SPOOKTOBER NUMBER 6!! We are back! This year is going to look a little different. This year we are picking two films picked by some stellar guests. Today's guest is TRISTAN!!! He chose our very first HITCHCOCK film! This film is an all-time classic film and we were very excited to watch, “Psycho.” We really enjoyed talking about a film that is well paced, shot, blocked, and acted. This is a good movie that inspired horror films. This is also a perfect B&W film. I think that this is a perfect film. This one is not for the faint of heart! This week, in honor of Spooktober, I'm digging in to the story of Gilles de Rais, a French noblemen and military leader who fought alongside Joan of Arc to lift the siege of Orleans during the Hundred Years War. But that, turns out, isn't Gilles' only claim to fame. In the years following, he was responsible for kidnapping and then brutally assaulting, torturing, and murdering upwards of 140 children, making Gilles the first recorded and possibly most horrifying serial killer of all time. His bear all confessions are chilling, his acts unthinkable. There truly are no words. You've been warned.Sources:UMKC School of Law "The Trial of Gilles de Rais (1440): An Account"UMKC School of Law "Confession of Gilles de Rais"The Trial of Gilles de Rais by Georges BataillesEncyclopedia Britannica "Gilles de Rais: History's First Serial Killer?"History Extra "Was Gilles de Rais really history's first recorded serial killer?"UMKC School of Law "Was Gilles de Rais Actually Innocent?"Shoot me a message! On thid episode of Backroads and Bonfires Adam is shocked by the amount of employees that work on a late night show. The boys then talk about shows we weren't allowed to watch as a kid. We dive into the disturbing Ed Gein show on Netflix. Adam has Jared breakdown how duck season has been going in Wisconsin and share some duck recipes. Burk asks us to name our MTV MT Rushmore tv shows then the boys get into SPOOKTOBER! We remember costume parties and the games we played at them, a Halloween "would you rather", and hypothetical Halloween tag team partners! Hut Hut. Love y'all.

You know that moment when your players say, “We want to be the bad guys”? Yeah, this is the episode where we let them. Pull up your black cloaks, pour a glass of something red (preferably not from the paladin), and join us as we wander into the mists of the Domains of Dread—where even your dice fear to roll. Spooktober Returns! It's Spooktober on the RPGBOT.Podcast, and the shadows are thick with story hooks! Whether you're brewing up your own Ravenloft horror campaign or just love watching your players question their morality, we've got the perfect tricks and treats for your tabletop this season. Catch all Spooktober episodes wherever you listen to podcasts, and be sure to leave us a review—if you dare. Show Notes In this chilling episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts descend into the Domains of Dread, exploring what it takes to create a Dungeons & Dragons campaign centered on irredeemably evil characters. From the tortured moors of Ravenloft to homebrewed horror realms, they discuss how to balance story tension, sustain player engagement, and manage moral complexity in games that venture beyond good and evil. Topics include: Campaign Design for Evil Characters – Building motivation and narrative cohesion for villainous parties without descending into chaos. Moral Ambiguity in RPGs – Turning “evil” from caricature into compelling character arcs. The Art of Gothic Horror – Using atmosphere, pacing, and dread to make fear part of the gameplay loop. Domains of Dread in 5e – Exploring Ravenloft, the Darklords, and what makes each domain a reflection of its master's sin. Fear and Power Dynamics – Leveraging fear mechanics and temptation systems to reinforce the campaign's tone. Session Zero for Evil Campaigns – Establishing safety tools and boundaries before diving into depravity. The discussion blends humor, horror, and hard-earned DM wisdom—making this an essential listen for anyone who's ever wondered what would happen if their party actually joined Strahd's HR department. Key Takeaways Evil Doesn't Mean Chaotic – The most compelling villains have goals, loyalties, and internal logic; chaos for chaos' sake burns out fast. Atmosphere Is a Mechanic – In horror RPGs, tone-setting is as crucial as initiative rolls. Lighting, music, and description carry mechanical weight. Safety Tools Are Sacred – Lines and veils aren't optional—they're essential in games exploring darkness and corruption. The World Reflects the Villains – Domains of Dread are metaphors in motion; the land mirrors its Darklord's sins and failures. Power Has a Cost – The higher your characters climb, the closer they draw to their own damnation. Let Players Build the Horror – Player backstories, vices, and obsessions fuel the dread better than any monster stat block. Evil Campaigns Need Boundaries – Trust, tone, and transparency keep the horror immersive, not harmful.
