The founders understood that a free press was a bulwark against tyranny. In the system they set up, they understood that they created inherent tensions between leaders and the press. Historically, those tensions have served us well in that it has motivated both sides to do better. Sometimes the tensions have burst forth into full-scale political warfare. Trust-busting, Teapot Dome, Watergate, and Joe McCarthy are a few examples. McCarthy knew, as despots all know, that if he could undermine the press, make them the enemy, you can get away with a whole lot. In 1954 Ed Morrow, the most noted journalist of his time also knew and understood the importance of the free press as a load-bearing pillar of all of our democratic institutions. Morrow believed that if McCarthy had gone further in his vilification of the press, our very democracy could be at risk. He instilled that idea in one of his young proteges, Marvin Kalb. Kalb, concerned about the current state of affairs, has just written Enemy of the People: Trump's War on the Press, the New McCarthyism, and the Threat to American Democracy My conversation with Marvin Kalb:
Wherein the Cuzes break the news about Ed Morrow bidding farewell to the floundering Nebraska Basketball team, talk coaching conspiracies involving the offfensive and defensive coaches, and take a break from Nebraska stuff to make World Series Predictions in MLB.
Corn Nation's David McGee joins the guys to talk Nebrasketball. What are his expectations for the remainder of the season? The offseason? Next year? What will be Tim Miles' fate? What should Tim Miles' fate be? Where would Nebraska basketball be at this point if Ed Morrow hadn't gotten hurt? How does he feel about the development of Jordy Tshimanga, Isaiah Roby, Glynn Watson Jr., and all of the young Huskers? How would David react to a Nebrasketball win in the NCAA Tournament should that day ever arrive? How did David become a Husker Hoops fan, and who is his favorite Husker of all-time (Shavon Shields? Eric Piatkowski? Tyronn Lue? Cookie Belcher? Brian Conklin? Shang Ping?)? Will Nebraska ever get another in-state recruit or will Creighton get all of them? Get all of that and more in this week's Big Red Cobcast! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Ryan & Pat discuss the future of Nebraska basketball and whether or not the future of Husker hoops is best left in the hands of Tim Miles. Should be able to develop the likes of Jordy Tshimanga, Isaiah Roby, Glynn Watson, Ed Morrow, Michael Jacobson, Jeriah Horne and Jack McVeigh? Or does the possibility of three straight losing seasons cost Miles the opportunity? The guys also discuss similarities in hiring and firing between different sports, the role of the athletic director (specifically Shawn Eichorst), and what Husker fans should be doing (and especially not doing) in regard to interacting with recruits. Listen to this episode because it's what Mike Riley & Bob Diaco would want you to do. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
