A táto jedinečnosť Ježiša v našom svete spôsobuje dvojité delenie ľudí, ktoré je reálne až dodnes: Jedni veria, že je Boží Syn a Spasiteľ a druhí to zásadne odmietajú, spochybňujú, či znevažujú. C. S. Lewis k tomu povedal: „Musíte sa rozhodnúť: Buď tento muž bol a je Boží Syn, alebo je to blázon, či niečo ešte horšie.“ Ale veriť v Ježiša je omnoho viac, než len uznať a byť presvedčený, že naozaj je Boh. Viera v Ježiša znamená to, že ak chcem mať večný život, musím v Ňom mať všetko uspokojujúci Poklad, Vodu a Chlieb – hasiace smäd aj hlad – a najmä – musím v Ňom mať za moje hriechy obetovaného Božieho Baránka. On je pravdivý! Tak poďme, jedzme, pime, verme, že Ježiš je Boží Syn a náš Spasiteľ, a tak v Ňom nachádzajme večnú radosť! Modlitba: Drahý náš Spasiteľu, ďakujeme Ti, že nás tak veľmi miluješ! Professor Renaldo McKenzie discusses the Caribbean Historical Timeline and explores the Caribbean Revolution and independence, starting with Haiti. Haiti's independence in 1804 did not merely free the western side of Hispaniola; it shook the entire colonial world. Yet the meaning of independence on the island became contested. Haiti's victory over France marked the first successful Black republic born of an anti-slavery revolution, but France and other colonial powers refused to recognize that freedom as legitimate. In 1825, France forced Haiti to pay a massive indemnity in exchange for recognition, turning liberation into debt and punishing Haiti for daring to defeat the empire. This history also complicates Dominican independence. The eastern side of Hispaniola experienced different claims of sovereignty: Spanish rule, a brief declaration of independence in 1821, Haitian unification of the island under Jean-Pierre Boyer in 1822, and then Dominican independence from Haiti in 1844. Later, Dominican elites framed Haitian rule as foreign occupation, while Haitian leaders saw island unification as necessary to protect abolition and prevent European recolonization. That conflict produced a bitter historical memory that still shapes relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic today. European powers and local elites helped deepen that division. Anti-Haitian ideology did not emerge by accident; it was cultivated through race, class, language, religion, and political power. Dominican nationalism often defined itself against Haiti, and some leaders advanced whiteness or Hispanidad as a way to separate Dominican identity from Blackness and African heritage. This helped create policies and attitudes that treated Haitians as outsiders, even though both peoples share the same island and are bound by colonial history. Haiti's revolution has also been misread through European eyes. C.L.R. James elevated Toussaint Louverture as a central figure, and Louverture was indeed brilliant. But the Haitian Revolution was not the work of one French-trained military mind. It was also the work of Vodou, maroon resistance, enslaved Africans, field laborers, women, spiritual leaders, and local revolutionaries such as Dutty Boukman. Haiti became the first black-ruled republic in the Americas in 1804, and music has mirrored, and at times shaped, the twists and turns of Haiti's politics and culture ever since. A primary source of Haitian culture is Dahomey, the birthplace of vodou--the most commonly held world view among Haitian people today. We explore how each of Haiti's rulers has championed his own preferred music. The Duvalier dictators favored compas dance music, and suppressed the most African-identified cultural expressions. When Baby Doc was run out of the country in 1986, African-derived racine, or roots, music exploded. Elizabeth McAlister, professor of religion at Wesleyan University, and Holly Nicolas--interweave music and history to tell a dynamic, and at times heart-breaking story. Included in the mix we'll hear the sweet sound of troubadour balladeers, as well as the exuberant tones of rara bands, the call and response of a capela kombit songs of work parties, impassioned choral music of evangelical churches, and the sophisticated, improvisational rhythms used in vodou rituals. This week and next, we continue our crystal anniversary celebration by bringing you two special Halloween episodes featuring moments old and new from the past 15 years. We begin with Chef Greg Picolo, whom we spoke with for our very first Halloween show back in 2010 and then again in 2019. She tells us about the role food plays in ceremonial Haitian Vodou and describes the Day of the Dead / Fèt Gede celebration she leads in the New Orleans Healing Center every November 1st. We also go into her botanica to see some of the unusual elements the Vodou priestess brings into play. Then, New Orleans writer Scott Gold recommends some spill-chilling dishes to serve at your Halloween party – a menu that, when first broadcast in 2014, gave rise to a true Emily Litella moment. Finally, we learn the art of obituary-writing from the emissary of eternal rest, John Pope. For nearly 50 years, John has marked the deaths of countless New Orleanians with his well-researched and poignant obituaries. In 2015, he compiled an anthology of 123 of his most memorable obits into his classic volume, "Getting Off at Elysian Fields," which was recently released in paperback.
