Calls are growing to move Australia Day away from January 26. But is having the national day on the anniversary of the First Fleet's arrival in 1788 really insensitive to Indigenous people? How would changing the date help the plight of Aboriginal Australians? Geoffrey Winters is a native title lawyer who ran against Tanya Plibersek as the Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Sydney in the 2016 election. He's a Gamillaroi man who's openly gay and who regularly appears on ABC's The Drum. This is a frank discussion, featuring me trying to get my head around where Geoffrey is coming from as an Indigenous queer man who's also a conservative. From the marriage equality survey to being in a party alongside people he disagrees with with to being "pragmatic" to what conservatism can offer first nations peoples to what (if anything) would make him consider leaving the Liberals. I got a lot out of this conversation and Geoffrey was mighty patient with me. I hope you like it. **COME SEE LIASYO LIVE @ YACK FESTIVAL WITH STAN GRANT, NOVEMBER 11th** Donate to the National Compassion Fund to help victims of the Las Vegas shooting @WintersGeoffrey Gay Indigenous Liberal candidate is more than just a wedge Article: He's gay, Indigenous and 27, but Geoffrey Winters says he's the model of a modern Liberal Young & Black: an SBS documentary Cause of the Week: Libs & Nats Say Yes (libsnatsyes.com.au)
Gay, Indigenous and a Liberal party candidate, a few things you wouldn't usually put together, but that is Geoffrey Winters, hear him break down social stereotypes with Serge Negus.
He was the young, gay, indigenous lawyer running for the Liberal Party against the powerful Tanya Plibersek in Sydney. And now he's in our lounge room. Answering our dumb questions. Geoffrey Winters explained the racial origins of the marriage act and what you actually do and don't have to do (and say and NOT say)to get married - and what he thinks on the whole thing. He also has a terrific story about the gay staffer who wrote themselves out of weddings - but into porn. Yeah, it's incredible. Also our names are Kyran Wheatley and Rhys Nicholson. And the effortless pop gem you hear is by the incredible Brendan Maclean. Look him up. He's amazing. And subscribe so you don't miss anything, because we kind of just are going to make eps and put them up rather than keep some sort of schedule. And tell a friend about us - most important. If this debate is going to get ugly we want to be the place where we actually hear what people think. If you reckon you know someone else who would like that... tell them about Save The Date. Oh and our predictions for the Date to Save haven't changed. Ok. Enjoy, see you next time.
