In this episode: They say a budget reflects your values. And if that's true, state lawmakers in Florida sure do value culture wars. The new state budget pours more than $100 million of taxpayer money into culture-war crusades — including cash for anti-abortion activists, new book-banning software, and an “economic freedom” center that invented an award for Ron DeSantis and praises Donald Trump's tariffs. What do Andy Warhol, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Flannery O'Connor, and Bono all have in common? According to writer and cultural historian Paul Elie, they're “cryptoreligious.” Their art isn't about affirming doctrine—it's about invoking mystery, longing, and spiritual disquiet. In a culture where religious belief is often either rigidly defined or entirely dismissed, these artists dwell in the in between. They don't preach—but they provoke. Their work invites us into important questions, questions to which the artists themselves often don't have answers. This week, Russell Moore talks with Paul Elie, author of The Life You Save May Be Your Own: An American Pilgrimage—Russell's favorite biography—and the new book The Last Supper: Art, Faith, Sex, and Controversy in the 1980s. Together they explore how religion haunts the work of artists like Dylan (especially his “Christian era”), Cohen (“Hallelujah”), singer Sinéad O'Connor (her unforgettable Saturday Night Live moment), and even Andy Warhol's more-than-15 minutes of fame. If you've ever felt as if a song lyric or a painting was almost a prayer—or wondered why some of our greatest artists can't seem to stop brushing up against the divine—this conversation is for you. Episode Summary: Matt Bufton is joined by Bill Wirtz of the Consumer Choice Centre to explore why governments often crack down on fun—from drinking and smoking to gambling and vaping. They dive into the cultural and political roots of paternalistic policies, how public health rhetoric masks deeper control impulses, and why Canada offers a revealing case study in state-imposed virtue. Wirtz also highlights how prohibitionist instincts persist even when evidence contradicts their effectiveness. New York is investigating a major crime: Enforcing the law. In a juxtaposition of how the law works in the woke world, Oregon has decided child murder is not a big deal if the murderer is the right race. And the Supreme Court has made a ruling on a major culture war topic.
In this fiery segment, Tara and Lee examine how cultural issues have shifted in the GOP's favor, driven by Donald Trump's unapologetic stance on topics like transgender athletes and gender identity on IDs. Citing Gallup polls, they argue the tide is turning as Americans reject progressive overreach. The discussion then pivots to explosive allegations from Kash Patel about Chinese-produced fake U.S. driver's licenses used in a 2020 election interference scheme, and the FBI's alleged cover-up. The hosts connect the dots between the Democratic Party, the CCP, and global adversaries like Iran and drug cartels, suggesting a deep alliance undermining American sovereignty and democracy.
Guest: Andrew Hartman is professor of history at Illinois State University. He is the author of A War for the Soul of America: A History of the Culture Wars, Education and the Cold War: The Battle for the American School, and his latest, Karl Marx in America. The post Karl Marx's Influence in the US appeared first on KPFA.
Karl Marx in America (University of Chicago Press, 2025), by Andrew Hartman To read Karl Marx is to contemplate a world created by capitalism. People have long viewed the United States as the quintessential anti-Marxist nation, but Marx's ideas have inspired a wide range of people to formulate a more precise sense of the stakes of the American project. Historians have highlighted the imprint made on the United States by Enlightenment thinkers such as Adam Smith, John Locke, and Thomas Paine, but Marx is rarely considered alongside these figures. Yet his ideas are the most relevant today because of capitalism's centrality to American life.In historian Andrew Hartman argues that even though Karl Marx never visited America, the country has been infused, shaped, and transformed by him. Since the beginning of the Civil War, Marx has been a specter in the American machine. During the Gilded Age, socialists read Marx as an antidote to the unchecked power of corporations. In the Great Depression, communists turned to Marx in hopes of transcending the destructive capitalist economy. The young activists of the 1960s were inspired by Marx as they gathered to protest an overseas war. Marx's influence today is evident, too, as Americans have become increasingly attuned to issues of inequality, labor, and power. After decades of being pushed to the far-left corner of intellectual thought, Marx's ideologies have crossed over into the mainstream and are more alive than ever. Working-class consciousness is on the rise, and, as Marx argued, the future of a capitalist society rests in the hands of the people who work at the point of production. A valuable resource for anyone interested in Marx's influence on American political discourse, Karl Marx in America is a thought-provoking account of the past, present, and future of his philosophies in American society. Andrew Hartman is professor of history at Illinois State University. He is the author of A War for the Soul of America: A History of the Culture Wars, published by the University of Chicago Press, and Education and the Cold War: The Battle for the American School. Derek Rishmawy, Alastair Roberts, and Joseph Minich explore the Jesus People movement of the 1970s—from hippie communes to Calvary Chapel—and its lasting impact on American evangelicalism. They discuss the tension between Spirit-led revival and institutional church structure, examining how countercultural seekers became conservative evangelicals and what today's church can learn from this transformative era. Key Takeaway: The Jesus People movement reveals how the church's greatest evangelistic strength—meeting spiritual hunger with radical acceptance—can also become its greatest weakness without proper institutional structure and long-term discipleship. Today, we're taking a look at the unraveling mayhem situation in California, where Governor Gavin Newsom's failure to lead has allowed chaos to run absolutely wild. Violent riots involving illegal immigrants (most of whom are military-aged men) are breaking out across the state. These individuals are not assimilating, they are disrupting, demanding, and waving foreign flags while burning ours on American soil. As California spirals, it's no surprise that federal intervention has become necessary. President Trump has stepped in where state "leadership" would not. This really isn't about politics, it's about preserving order, protecting citizens, and upholding the rule of law. We are a people who serve a God of justice, not disorder. What's happening is not compassionate, it's destabilizing. California deserves better, and America must wake up before this becomes the norm nationwide. God forbid. Let's talk about what's really going on in California and why prayer, truth, and resolve are crucial right now.--https://www.thebrandsunday.com/products/the-bible-study-physical?srsltid=AfmBOoqJuDPZk6H7VWSxgepSo3RWAJCtIGO9wrHmULH1iMgxSzkJ791_--Order CULTure: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/SLYWFXAB6479S

Welcome to another explosive episode where we dissect the absolute madness happening in American politics right now. If you thought 2025 was going to be boring, think again we're living through governmental reorganization via sledgehammer, and the fallout is everywhere. This comprehensive political news analysis covers Trump policies, immigration reform, government spending, and the unprecedented political drama unfolding in Washington DC. What We're Covering This Episode: Government in Chaos We dive deep into the Department of Homeland Security's epic fail with their "sanctuary cities" list that somehow included cities that literally sued AGAINST sanctuary laws. Plus, FBI Director Kash Patel's reign of chaos that has federal agents fleeing faster than passengers from a sinking ship. Trump Administration Immigration Policy & Border Security From Trump's new 12-country travel ban to the weaponization of a Boulder terror attack, we break down how immigration enforcement is becoming collective punishment. We'll tell you about the Wisconsin case where someone literally forged death threats to get an innocent dishwasher deported because apparently, witness intimidation has gone international. Get the latest on ICE operations, deportation policies, and asylum changes. HR 1 Congressional Bill Analysis: $2.4 Trillion Government Spending This is the big one, folks. Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" is over 1,000 pages of pure governmental chaos that affects federal budget, healthcare reform, student loans, and climate policy. We're talking: $150 billion for defense (including $5 billion just for icebreakers) $78 billion for border security with $1,000 asylum application fees Complete elimination of climate funding while mandating Arctic oil drilling Healthcare cuts that would make Thanos proud Student loan changes that could destroy higher education Elon Musk vs Donald Trump: Political Drama & Stock Market Impact Here's where it gets Netflix-level dramatic: Elon Musk, Trump's supposed efficiency czar, read the bill and absolutely lost it. He called it a "disgusting abomination" and started a Twitter rebellion. Trump's response? Threatening to cancel every government contract with Tesla and SpaceX, wiping out $150 billion in Tesla's stock value in one day. This billionaire feud has major implications for government contracts, electric vehicle policy, and the 2025 political landscape. Artificial Intelligence Regulation & Federal AI Policy Buried in this legislative monster is a 10-year federal preemption on states regulating AI. That's right no state can pass AI safety laws for an entire decade while the federal government throws $2 billion at AI projects, including $200 million for the Pentagon to use AI to figure out where all their money went. This has massive implications for AI governance, tech regulation, and state vs federal authority. Supreme Court Decisions 2025 & Data Privacy In a 6-3 decision that sounds like dystopian fiction, the Supreme Court gave Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency complete access to millions of Americans' personal data from the Social Security Administration. We're talking Social Security numbers, medical records, tax information everything. This SCOTUS ruling has major implications for privacy rights and government surveillance. Culture Wars & Higher Education Policy From renaming the USNS Harvey Milk during Pride Month to Harvard losing permission to host international students, we cover how the culture wars are reshaping institutions across America. This includes updates on diversity and inclusion policies, military culture changes, and university federal funding issues. The Comment Section Reality Check We tackle some tough conversations from our community about accountability, identity, and the uncomfortable truths we need to discuss about where we are as a society. Why This Political News Analysis Episode Matters This isn't just political theater these Trump administration policies will affect your taxes, your healthcare, your student loans, your ability to send money to family abroad, and even whether your state can protect you from AI discrimination. We're watching the most dramatic governmental transformation in decades, complete with billionaire feuds and constitutional crises that will impact American politics for years to come. Whether you're here for the political drama breakdown, the policy analysis, or just trying to understand current events and what's happening to the country, this episode delivers comprehensive coverage of the biggest political stories of 2025. Grab your favorite beverage and buckle up it's about to get wild. “Be Like Penny.” If you visit my current hometown of Cottonwood, Arizona, you'll see these three words displayed around town. Penny Smith was a friend to many and a living example of how everyday citizens can make a meaningful difference in their local communities. She passed away in 2021, but her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who know and love her, and also through The Penny Peace Project. In this episode, I'll introduce you to Julie Fernatt and Llama Habern, the founders of ROI (Rural Organizing Initiative). Thanks in large part to Penny's supportive efforts, in 2023, Cottonwood was a planned tour stop for a regional drag company. Evangelical religious leaders mobilized their communities to turn up in droves, and city council meetings became contentious, escalating to threats of violence toward city leaders and community members. That's when ROI and its partners organized a nonviolent response that effectively silenced right-wing agitators. Listen in to learn how they did it.ROI currently provides civic engagement and supports candidates for local and county offices. Julie & Llama share how community organizing clears channels of communication and helps to build lasting, non-partisan coalitions. We also discuss: running for local office, fundraising, and the upcoming No Kings protest.Local activism is accessible to all and with a little effort, we can all be more like Penny.Rural Organizing Initiative (ROI) is a 501(c)4 non-profit corporation operating in Northern Arizona. ROI promotes full participation in democracy by providing civic education and by supporting/coaching potential candidates for local and county offices. With left and right politics now firmly established, how are the right deploying entertainment as a means to further their ideology? Who are the protagonists behind the discourse we're being subjected to? Sunday AM Sermon
This week Erica has the scoop on allegations of stalking and harassment against King County Assessor John Arthur Wilson. We also debate Cathy Moore's decision to withdraw a bill that critics say weakens the council's ethics standards. Plus, we discuss the anti-trans demonstrations and counter-protests at Cal Anderson Park and City Hall that resulted in over 30 arrests. Mayoral Candidate Katie Wilson blamed Bruce Harrell for permitting a "fundamentalist, anti-trans “family values” protest in the heart of Seattle's historic LGBTQ neighborhood." Is she right? And, were the counter-protests effective politics? Our editor is Quinn Waller. Thanks to Uncle Ike's pot shop for sponsoring this week's episode! Back in 2016, Joan Williams, distinguished professor of law (emerita) at UC Law San Francisco, wrote an essay for the Harvard Business Review on why President Donald Trump attracted so many non-college voters. It went viral with almost four million views, becoming the most-read article in the 90-year history of the publication.Williams' new book, Outclassed: How the Left Lost the Working Class and How to Win Them Back, outlines how the seemingly common view that her fellow progressives must abandon their social causes to win back those non-college-educated voters is wrong. What is required, she argues, is a renewed understanding of class. She introduces her conceptualization of the “diploma divide,” or the gap between Americans with and without college degrees. Her worldview divides the electorate into three class-based groups: the college-educated, upper-class “Brahmin left”, the low-income working (middle) class, and the right-wing merchant class, which pushes for economic policies that benefit the rich. Her argument is that a new coalition between the latter two has shifted politics to the right. In this week's Capitalisn't episode, Luigi and Bethany invite Williams to discuss whether our society indeed breaks down so neatly. If it does, how does her breakdown help us understand recent electoral shifts and trends in populism and why the left is on the losing end of both? As she writes in her book and discusses in the episode, “[the Brahmin] left's anger is coded as righteous. Why is non-elite anger discounted as “grievance?” Together, their conversation sheds light on how the left can win back voters without compromising on progressive values.Over the last four years, Capitalisn't has interviewed conservative thinkers like Oren Cass, Patrick Deneen, and Sohrab Ahmari to understand how the political right developed a new platform after President Joe Biden's victory in 2020. With this episode, we begin the same project with the left by asking: What could be the economic basis for a new progressive platform?Show Notes:Read an excerpt from Joan Williams' new book, “Outclassed: How the Left Lost the Working Class and How to Win Them Back,” out now at St. Martin's PressQuiz: “Are You in a Class Bubble?”What So Many People Don't Get About the U.S. Working Class, by Joan Williams, Harvard Business Review, November 10, 2016
In this high-energy double-segment episode, the host dives deep into two of today's most polarizing issues. First, he slams the GOP's past retreat from the culture wars, highlighting Trump's uncompromising stance on trans athletes in girls' sports and the federal funding threats aimed at California's school system. The segment sparks debate over fairness, biology, and the left's alleged quiet admission of male advantage in sports. Then, the conversation shifts to the AI revolution, where predictions of mass white-collar layoffs and 20% unemployment loom. With warnings from tech leaders like Dario Amodei and Mark Zuckerberg, the episode explores what jobs might survive—and what skills Americans will need to adapt. Bold, provocative, and unapologetic.
Despite gutting staff and complaining about “woke programming and anti-American drag shows” at the Kennedy Center, the center's show roster is full of drag! Then, to combat June PRIDE, a group of Ohio GOP legislators have come up with Natural Family Month to celebrate male led households with a woman and children. No single parents, divorcees, or same-sex parents allowed. Finally, burger chain In-N-Out is changing some recipes to include organic ingredients and natural dues versus processed and synthetic petroleum-based additives. Not a bad idea in our opinion. Domestic politics during the US war in Vietnam are often noted for the extreme divisions between Right and Left, between doves and hawks, and between whites and non-whites. But as Joseph Darda argues in his book, How White Men Won the Culture Wars: A History of Veteran America (University of California Press, 2021), the War in Vietnam helped heal divisions among white men. It created what he calls, “a white racial reunion” that allowed white men to see themselves through the image of the Vietnam War veteran: forgotten and not valued. Of course, not all veterans are white, and not all (or even most) white men are veterans, but as Darda shows the image of the Vietnam War veteran was made to stand in for a range of grievances held by white men. Using a diverse set of texts, from the DSM III to college writing programs to the music of Bruce Springsteen and the movies of Sylvester Stallone, Darda shows how the cultural products of the post-Vietnam War era worked to create an image of white men who were victims of the war, of an uncaring society, and a government that betrayed them. This book is important not just for scholars interested in the US war in Vietnam and its domestic aftermath but also helps us understand contemporary attitudes and political developments involving racial politics, affirmative action/DEI, and how we understand the current generation of veterans from so-called Wars on Terror. Joesph Darda is an Associate Professor of English at Michigan State University. He has previously been interviewed on New Books Network about his book The Strange Career of Racial Liberalism. https://newbooksnetwork.com/th... Learn more about your ad choices. Chris speaks with researcher and author Ross Downing about his book Germanic and Slavic Paganism: Security Threats and Resiliency. Ross, who works with a network of scholars and specialists focused on minority religions and extremism, explores how modern pagan traditions, particularly those rooted in Germanic and Slavic identity, are increasingly weaponized by extremist movements on both sides of the Ukraine War. From the myth of the warrior ideal to the role of neo-paganism in Russian special forces and the Azov movement, Ross unpacks the ideological messiness, spiritual camouflage, and social vulnerabilities that make these belief systems ripe for radicalization. They also discuss the “folkish vs. inclusive” divide, the algorithm's role in spreading conspiratorial spirituality, and why mainstream institutions need to step up—not just to contain extremism, but to support resilient, non-violent expressions of cultural identity. In this explosive segment, the hosts dissect two major stories shaking the political and cultural landscape. First, they cover the Supreme Court's critical 7-2 decision to uphold free speech after Maine legislator Laura Libby was censured and stripped of her voting rights for naming a transgender athlete—information already publicized by the media. The case raises alarming concerns over silencing dissent, especially when it involves defending women's rights in sports. Then, the discussion pivots to Washington's out-of-control spending, revealing $852 billion still allocated to the Green New Deal through 2035 despite Republican promises to cut it. As U.S. credit ratings hit historic downgrades and national debt balloons toward $47 trillion, the hosts argue that true conservatism is vanishing—replaced by bipartisan budget bloat and economic denial. A must-listen for anyone concerned about free speech, fiscal sanity, and the future of the republic.

He shares how he knew he wanted to be a SEAL as a kid, what it was really like in the military, and how the red tape and politics eventually pushed him into media. We dig into the challenges facing military recruitment, the growing influence of woke politics in the ranks, and what inspired Carl to write not just one, but FIVE books. The conversation also covers how gender identity debates intersect with national defense, the role Pete Hegseth and recent Supreme Court rulings might play, the cultural pushback against traditional masculinity, and the buzz around a potential Trump military parade.
