Ableton is a household / “studio” staple for musicians around the globe. CEO Gerhard Behles and his team have been making unique software and hardware for music creation and performance since 1999. This talk will showcase how Ableton made it this far and the “vibrato” they want to create for future musicians by giving back and doing good!
Roger Linn is a Grammy award winning electronic musical instrument designer, whose instruments have had a major influence on the music industry. He designed the first drum machine with samples. His MPC60 revolutionized the sampling and hip hop community. Today, his LinnStrument is ushering in a new generation of expressive electronic musicianship. It was an honor to speak with the legendary Roger Linn. I could immediately sense his passion for his work. Roger shared a lot about his background and what motivates him to continue his work. Despite his deep work in the technological aspect of the craft, Roger maintains a firm grasp on the love of music that continues to inspire his work today. Robert Henke is one of the most significant figures in electronic music. Along with Gerhard Behles, Henke developed Ableton Live, the DAW that allows musicians to store and trigger samples during shows. He's also made abstract computer music and dance-derived techno as Monolake. Here, Henke discusses the at-times improbable story of how Live came to be. We begin by hearing about what Berlin was like when Henke first moved there and the beginnings of Monolake, setting the scene for the software's creation.

One of the things I've always been curious about has been the Institute of Sonology, a Dutch center of electronic music studies. I knew that Gregory had been a "Sonologist", as had Gerhard Behles of Ableton and many others. But I knew practically nothing about the place. Gregory had always been circumspect about it whenever I talked to him, so I finally cornered him w/r/t doing a podcast about it, and here we are. The podcast starts with a continuation of the Dockstader discussion, but it folds into the Sonology discussion quite easily. I think that you'll find the whole thing - including the influence of the Philips Corporation on the world of electronic music. If you ever wondered why scenes grow up in different places, this might open your eyes a little. Thanks again to Gregory, who always teaches me without making me feel stupid - the primary attribute of a wonderful educator.
