Certified breathwork facilitator and founder of The Self-Care Suite Tara Pringle Jefferson joins us to reframe self-care beyond consumerism. Drawing from her new book Bloom How You Must: A Black Woman's Guide to Self-Care and Generational Healing, Tara unpacks the “strong Black woman” narrative, shares what was happening in her life when her doctor literally prescribed rest as medicine, and points out practical ways to build support, not just stamina. We get into social and professional wellness (hello, sabbaticals), the power of “third places,” why it's important to indulge creative rituals that aren't rooted in perfectionism, and the intergenerational wisdom she gathered from talking to 100 Black women ages 19–99. Plus: Toni Morrison's lesson on boundaries, Coretta Scott King's vocation-as-service, and a simple mandate for 2026 (remember you're human). For more from Tara:Bloom How You Must (book + tour dates)The Self-Care Suite (Tara's community)Tara on social: @WearWomenBloom (IG / Facebook / Threads)Connect with Be Well, Sis:Instagram – @bewellsis_podcastSubstack – bewellsis.substack.comFollow, rate, and share this episode! We're supporting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Carmela Then: From Requirements Chaos to Story Mapping Success—How Planning Transforms Agile Teams Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. "We can't continue to do this. Something has to change." - Carmela Then Carmela shares a story of organizational chaos that will resonate with many Agile practitioners. She joined a company where teams would jump straight into writing requirements without pausing to understand what they were trying to achieve. Vendor deliverables were thrown "over the fence" to internal technology teams with the assumption that everyone would magically know what to do. For almost a year, this pattern continued: teams writing stories on the fly while building, creating massive rework, confusion, and burnout. The Product Owner faced constant stakeholder disappointment, having to explain what wasn't delivered and why. Then came the breakthrough moment—the PO reached out and said, "We can't continue to do this." Carmela introduced a structured approach: workshops that brought business stakeholders and subject matter experts together to walk through end-to-end business processes. She implemented story mapping—visualizing the journey from beginning to end, with each major step broken into smaller, actionable stories. Critically, she built in feedback loops: playback sessions where the team validated their understanding with stakeholders before committing to development. The result? Teams could now distinguish between well-understood work they could start immediately and the "hairy" items that needed more investigation. The Product Owner could make informed prioritization decisions, and the entire team gained visibility into the bigger picture. Self-reflection Question: How often does your team pause to map the full end-to-end journey before diving into requirements, and what might you be missing by skipping this step? Carmela Then: When Remote Teams Stop Listening—The Silent Killer of Agile Collaboration Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. "Two minutes into it, my mind's starting to wander and I started to do my own thing." - Carmela Then Carmela paints a vivid picture of a distributed team stretched across Sydney, New Zealand, India, and beyond—a team where communication had quietly become the enemy of progress. The warning signs were subtle at first: in meetings with 20 people on the call, only two or three would speak for the entire hour or two, with no visual aids, no PowerPoints, no drawings. The result? Within minutes, attention drifted, and everyone assumed someone else understood the message. The speakers believed their ideas had landed; the listeners had already tuned out. This miscommunication compounded sprint after sprint until, just two months before go-live, the team was still discussing proof of concept. Trust eroded completely, and the Product Owner resorted to micromanagement—tracking developers by the hour, turning what was supposed to be an Agile team into a waterfall nightmare. Carmela points to a critical missing element: the Scrum Master had been assigned delivery management duties, leaving no one to address the communication dysfunction. The lesson is clear—in remote, cross-cultural teams, you cannot simply talk your way through complex ideas; you need visual anchors, shared artifacts, and constant verification that understanding has truly been achieved. In this segment, we talk about the importance of visual communication in remote teams and psychological safety. Self-reflection Question: How do you verify that your message has truly landed with every team member, especially when working across time zones and cultures? Featured Book of the Week: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie Carmela recommends How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, a timeless classic that remains essential reading for every Scrum Master. As Carmela explains, "We work with people—customers are people, and our team, they are human beings as well. Whether we want it or not, we are leaders, we are coaches, and sometimes we could even be mentors." Written during the Great Depression and predating software entirely, this book emphasizes that relationships and understanding people are the foundation of personal and professional success. Carmela was first introduced to the book by a successful person outside of work who advised her not just to read it once, but to revisit it every year. For Scrum Masters navigating team dynamics, stakeholder relationships, and the human side of Agile, Carnegie's principles remain as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago. Kicking off 2026, the Stop Wasting Your Wine team dives into the vibrant world of orange wine with a review of the Pierre and Antonin Petite Sauvage Orange Wine. Far from being just a passing fad, this 100% Souvignier Gris natural wine proves to be a bottle that perfectly balances high quality winemaking with an approachable price of $17 to $20. Throughout the episode, the hosts explore what truly defines an orange wine, explaining how skin maceration creates a unique "skin contact white" that delivers the tannic grip of a red with the bright acidity of a white. You will hear the team break down surprising tasting notes ranging from a Grand Marnier style orange lift and honeysuckle to a complex, earthy finish of black tea. The discussion also features a special guest clip from winemaker Antonin Bonnet, insights into why this style is the ultimate food pairing "chameleon" for everything from spicy Thai food to funky cheese boards, and a heated "Pick Your Poison" debate that pits high end clubbing against dive bar comfort.Whether you are a natural wine devotee or a curious newcomer, this episode is a fun and educational deep dive into a bottle that truly "crushes it".Support the Show!Love finding great wines at a great value? Carmela Then: The Scrum Master Who Learned That Perfect Boards Don't Build Perfect Teams Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. "The failure part is, instead of leading the team to work toward a common vision, I was probably one of the persons that helped the divide." - Carmela Then Carmela shares a vulnerable story from her first Scrum Master role at a bank. Armed with training, certifications, and the ability to build a beautiful physical Scrum board with perfectly straight lines, she believed she was ready to lead. But Carmela quickly discovered a crucial truth: mastering the mechanics of Scrum is vastly different from serving a team's real needs. Instead of showing up as a humble learner willing to grow alongside her team, she put on a facade of competence and confidence. When two Product Owners began fighting for dominance, rather than stepping back and focusing the teams on their shared purpose, Carmela found herself drawn into the political battle, supporting one PO over the other. The result was devastating—a toxic environment where one PO was demoted, and talented team members left the organization entirely. Looking back, Carmela recognizes that her failure wasn't about the Scrum board or ceremonies; it was about not putting the customer and common goals at the center. She learned that Scrum Masters must lead with humility, focus on outcomes rather than egos, and help teams unite rather than divide. In this episode, we refer to John C. Maxwell and Failing Forward by John C. Maxwell. Self-reflection Question: When was the last time you prioritized looking competent over truly serving your team's needs, and what did that cost you? How do you change someone's mind without being manipulative? In a world where influence is a key leadership currency, the line between ethical persuasion and unethical manipulation can seem blurry. To navigate this complex territory, Andy Lopata is joined by an expert in the art of communication, Paul du Toit. Paul is a 27-year speaking veteran, Africa's first Certified speaking professional this century, and the author of three business books, including the timely "The Book of Persuasion." As an inductee into both the Southern African Speakers Hall of Fame and the Southern African Educators Hall of Fame, Paul brings decades of experience to the conversation. Together, Andy and Paul dissect the crucial difference between persuading someone for mutual benefit and coercing them for personal gain. Paul emphasises that true persuasion is an art that strengthens relationships by ensuring decisions are made with free will and are built on a foundation of trust. This conversation is a masterclass in the practical techniques of ethical influence. Discover why "engaged listening" is more powerful than active listening, how to ask questions that build rapport instead of feeling like an interrogation, and the four-step "Agree and Switch" method for overcoming resistance. Paul also shares powerful insights on the role of confidence, the impact of non-verbal cues in a virtual world, and what we can learn from charismatic figures. What we discussed: Persuasion vs. Manipulation: The critical distinction lies in intent and outcome. Persuasion aims to change minds while honouring free will and building long-term trust. Manipulation is coercive and often unethical, prioritising a short-term win over the relationship. The Power of "Engaged Listening": Go beyond simply hearing words. Engaged listening involves focusing on the person, understanding the context behind what they're saying, and making them feel truly heard, which is the foundation of any persuasive conversation. Asking Questions Strategically: The most effective persuasion comes from the information you gather. Learn how to ask for permission to ask questions, creating a dynamic where the other person willingly shares without feeling interrogated. Charisma: Charismatic figures like Steve Jobs, Oprah, and Muhammad Ali weren't just born with it. Their incredible ability to persuade was often forged by overcoming immense adversity, combined with excellent oratory skills and a laser-focused vision. Certified coach and professor Kathleen Muldoon and co-founder of Ryan House and Children's Respite Homes of America Jonathan Cottor discuss the article "The need for pediatric respite care." Kathleen shares the personal story of raising her son Gideon who lives with over 42 medical diagnoses and explain why the family had to move across the country to find safety. They highlight the critical difference between taking a break and surviving the relentless cycle of 24/7 medical vigilance required for medically complex children. The conversation advocates for the expansion of pediatric respite homes in the U.S. while urging clinicians to recognize that caregiver well-being is inseparable from patient health. We must acknowledge that keeping a family together often depends on the support they receive outside the hospital walls. Partner with me on the KevinMD platform. Before discussing today's show, I'd like to provide some updates on what to expect from the podcast in 2026. First of all, there will be no more Behind the Sessions episodes. There could also be changes in the frequency of episodes at some point, but we'll see how that goes. Life shifts and different needs arise that are pulling me in other directions. Everyone has times when shifts are needed to make space for pressing needs, and that's what I'm experiencing in my life. I'm still excited about the show and the ten-year milestone that we'll reach in 2026. Remember, the archive of episodes (almost 500!) is always available through our website. Today's episode brings important information about how parenthood changes everything, including your sex life. There are new complexities to intimacy and sex after having a child, and parents need to be prepared so they can protect their connection. EPISODE 233 I was recently in Los Angles, California, to see a music concert at the Troubadour. A friend of mine, a Hollywood actress, joined me for the concert at Troubadour. It was a concert including featuring Robby Krieger of the Doors and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.Like most great venues, it has rules, and like most rules, they only matter when they suddenly apply to you. As we passed through security, her purse was searched and a forbidden item was discovered: chewing gum. The security team informed her that chewing gum was not allowed inside. She was asked to give it up.She could throw it away and leave it with security and pick it up after the concert. She choose to leave her chewing gum with security. However, some point, she made an empowered decision. She was going to get her gum back. She left the club, retrieved the gum from security, walked back to her car, placed it safely inside, and then returned to the venue. Only then could she relax and enjoy the show with me. She applied “The Chewing Gum Principles.” “The Chewing Gum Principles provide a sense of empowered control over your own life within your own boundaries with you being responsible for you own actions.” How can you use the Chewing Gum Principles in your own life? Using the Chewing Gum Principles and always being aware of your own personal boundaries, being responsible for your own actions and always be empowered allows you to create a positive impact in your own life. Even if someone tries to take away your chewing gum. Out There on the Edge of Everything®… Stephen Lesavich, PhD Copyright © 2025 by Stephen Lesavich, PhD. All rights reserved. Mike Nemer interviewed Kevin Carriere, the CEO of Powertron Global, who explained that he entered the HVAC industry after meeting engineers developing solutions for heat exchanger efficiency restoration. On episode 310 of The Green Insider podcast, Kevin described how Powertron Global was founded to address HVAC efficiency issues, expanding beyond initial heat exchanger solutions to tackle other efficiency-robbing factors in climate control systems. Todays podcast includes: Sustainable HVAC Efficiency Restoration Sustainable HVAC practices can lead to cost savings, not just environmental benefits. HVAC systems lose efficiency over time, mainly due to heat exchanger capacity loss, which increases energy use and maintenance. Powertron engineers developed a heat exchanger restoration technology to restore lost efficiency, filling a gap in the industry. Craftsmanship and education on efficiency restoration are crucial, especially for city and government agencies. HVAC Efficiency Diagnostics Platform Most HVAC systems, especially in taxpayer-funded facilities, operate 30–40% below their intended design capacity. Powertron created a proprietary forensic measurement and verification platform, collecting data from over 400 studies in 38 countries. The company focuses on restoring system capacity and providing diagnostic data to manufacturers and researchers, serving clients like cell tower huts, convenience stores, and government facilities. HVAC Efficiency Loss Over Time New HVAC systems lose 5–7% efficiency in the first year (with proper maintenance), then 3–4% annually, reaching a 25–30% reduction over time. Systems in regions with long cooling seasons (eastern/western US) can lose significant efficiency in 3.5–5 years; in the Midwest, it takes about twice as long. Rooftop units expected to last 15 years are often replaced in 10 due to efficiency loss and increased runtime. Type System ROI and Sustainability The ROI for Powertron's type system is typically 12–18 months, but as short as 3 months for mission-critical sites (e.g., data centers, hospitals). The goal is to restore systems to their design capacity, improving efficiency and generating further savings. Certified reports are provided to quantify emissions reductions and energy savings, which can be used in customers' sustainability reports. In Episode 71 of the MacBroz Podcast, we tackle one of the biggest gaps we see in the firearms world—people buying guns but never training from concealment. If you carry it that way, you should probably train that way… right? We also get into holiday gift ideas for 2A enthusiasts, breaking down what actually makes a good gift versus the absolute worst gifts that end up stuffed in a drawer forever. From there, we dive into testing ammo in our pistols and why it matters more than most people realize. Reliability, recoil impulse, consistency—if you care about efficient and effective pistol shooting, you need to test what you carry. Somehow, this all spirals into jokes about Josh's new “throat goat” shirt, listener questions, and plenty of classic MacBroz chaos along the way. As always, it's honest conversation, practical info, and a lot of laughs—because learning doesn't have to be boring. What if the pain, injury or illness you've been carrying isn't just physical… but emotional, energetic, and deeply connected to unprocessed experiences your body is trying to help you move through? Today I'm sitting down with Taylor Cecil, a highly acclaimed holistic movement and peak performance coach. He is a former professional triathlete who has trained extensively at the CHEK Academy and Prague Rehabilitation School, and worked with world champions like Mick Fanning alongside everyday people who just want to feel at home in their bodies again. After personally experiencing chronic back pain for 18 months that sat at an 8 out of 10 daily, I tried everything: physio, chiro, every stretch and strengthening exercise you can imagine. Nothing stuck. Then I met Taylor. In one session, he connected what was happening in my back and pelvis to deeper emotional and energetic imprints … within two weeks of working together, my back pain was completely gone. This conversation isn't your typical wellness episode. This is about understanding that your body is speaking a language, and it's time we learned how to listen. In this episode, we dive into: → The real connection between emotional wounds and physical pain → Why your pain, inflammation, or disease might be your nervous system holding on to unprocessed emotions → How stress, beliefs, and trauma show up as physical symptoms in the body → The patterns that world champion athletes and everyday people share when it comes to healing → How to map your nervous system and understand what state you're in at different times → The three branches of your nervous system: sympathetic, ventral vagus, and dorsal vagus… and what each one means → Why breath is the key carrier of information in the body → Practical daily habits that create true mind-body harmony → How childhood conditioning impacts our ability to feel safe, express needs, and develop self-esteem → Taylor's personal rituals, including his 100-day Tai Chi practice and the "Four Doctors" philosophy About Taylor Cecil: Taylor Cecil is a holistic movement and peak performance coach, former professional triathlete, and founder of Native State on the Gold Coast. With over 14 years of experience, Taylor has worked with professional athletes and individuals seeking to strengthen, heal and reconnect with their bodies. His unique approach blends movement, breathwork, nervous system mapping, and energetic healing to support true transformation from the inside out. After the excitement of becoming a Board Certified Nurse Coach, many coaches hit an unexpected wave of uncertainty. In this episode, Laura and Shelby break down the messy middle that happens right after certification: the “am I doing this right,” the fear of visibility, and the pressure to suddenly have everything figured out. They share what actually matters in these early stages, why slow and steady progress builds long term success, and how to create momentum without burning out or expecting perfection. This conversation is grounding, practical, and a permission slip to breathe, soften, and take the next small step instead of trying to leap into a fully formed business overnight.Things to remember:Certification is the beginning, not the final destination. Feeling uncertain afterward is completely normal. You do not need a perfect plan. You just need consistent action and willingness to learn as you go.Wobbliness is part of the process. Confidence comes from reps, not readiness.Visibility grows slowly. You do not have to show up everywhere at once.Community support matters. You build faster and stay grounded when you are not doing it alone. You already have what you need to start. The next step is always small, doable, and right in front of you.Connect with us:Instagram: @successfulnursecoachesWebsite: www.thesuccessfulnursecoaches.comJoin our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thesuccessfulnursecoachIf you loved this episode…Please take 30 seconds to subscribe, rate, and leave a review — it helps more nurses find this work and fall in love with the boring parts too.Watch the full episode here:https://youtu.be/r2ohGjiY5hkMentioned in this episode:Join NLCA Cohort 6https://www.nurselifecoachacademy.com/certification
