GRNC's Paul Valone joins Cam with an update on the top item on the group's legislative wishlist this year: making North Carolina the 30th state to adopt permitless carry.
The head of the 2A group Grassroots NC is warning that new regulations imposed (potentially in violation of state law) could lead to fewer concealed carry courses and an invasion of privacy for gun owners who do undergo the training. GRNC's Paul Valone joins Cam with the details, as well as an update on the group's lawsuit challenging needless delays in issuing carry permits in the state's most populous county.
For the second time in two years, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden is being sued for delays in processing concealed handgun permits and pistol purchase permits. Carolina Journal reports: The second lawsuit and request for injunctive relief was filed by retired former N.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Judge Bob Hunter and N.C. Attorney Ron Shook in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of N.C. on behalf of Grassroots North Carolina (GRNC) and the Gun Owners of America (GOA) organizations. Andy Stevens and Bryan Yerke, spokesmen for plaintiffs GRNC and GOA, held a press conference at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse on Nov. 28 to address the latest lawsuit against McFadden. Sheriff McFadden was initially sued by GRNC and GOA in 2021 over the department's continued delay of gun permit issuances. The result of the litigation ended with McFadden agreeing to comply with state law regarding gun permit applications. In a statement to WSOC-TV, Sheriff McFadden admits he is sending all applications through the Veterans Administration - even though the VA reports information to the already-available NICS background check system. “At this time MCSO has not received service/notice pertaining to this alleged lawsuit. MCSO continues to remain in compliance with the Pistol Purchase Permits (PPP) and Concealed Handgun Permits (CHP) statue. The agency has 14-days to process a PPP and 45-days for a CHP once we have received all required paperwork, including ALL mental health releases. Applications are processed first in, first out, and unfortunately, the facilities do not send the releases back in chronological order. We have also found that not everyone discloses their military status on their application, so to be sure we are getting accurate information our process is to check everyone through the same facilities which include the VA. Since the beginning of the pandemic MCSO has implemented several changes to the process to be more efficient to include mailing permit(s) to customers to eliminate visits to the office. Last year the division also added two additional staff members. Within the last couple of weeks MCSO began using an interface between the state system and our permit vendor, Permitium to eliminate staff from having to do duplicate entry on new applicants.” Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you’ve been to any of Raleigh, North Carolina's queer venues, or a local punk show with more than two women in it, or any Girls Rock NC event in the last three years, you’ve probably come across Kae Diaz. Kae is a singer, a drummer, a ukulele player, a bartender, a photographer, and in general a pillar of the local queer DIY scene. They play the electric ukulele and drums in an indie rock project called Fruit Snack, and as it happens, we are actually currently both in a punk country band called Severed Fingers. I recently went to visit Kae and talk about finding collaborators, what the music scene is like in the Mojave desert where they grew up, and the challenges of creating a space for the art you want to see. Just a warning, we do mention alcohol and some other, mostly fun, adult topics. This profile is a collaboration with the Durham Beat. Read the full interview transcript and see photos that I took of Kae at home over on their website: https://durhambeat.com/2019/01/13/artist-profile-kae-diaz/
One of the most common misconceptions that I hear from folks who haven't shot competitively, is that competitive shooters shoot ammo that isn't powerful. That isn't really true. Factory 9mm that you'll get from the store is going to be pretty close to the 9mm minor power factor ammo that gets loaded for competition (and some of the folks making re-man ammo don't make it powerful enough to make power factor). I will say that a lot of the factory .40 and .45 ammo is actually quite hot, so it's going to be well and above what's needed for major power factor in competition, but the competition loads aren't light by any means. The News The push for permitless concealed carry has started right here in North Carolina. It's going to require a constitutional amendment, and it's going to be a fight, but we can do it. GRNC has the details here. Sponsor I recently got my hands on some of the "other guys" bullets in a trade with a friend. The difference in consistency between them and my Blue Bullets was surprisingly large. With the Blue Bullets I don't have issues with the coating chipping off, or getting half-cast bulelts, and things like that, which was surprisingly common with these other coated bullets I received from my friend. I've been shooting Blue Bullets since long before they were a sponsor of the show, and they make a product that I really believe it. Check them out at thebluebullets.com and use the code triangle at checkout to save 5%. Plug of the Week Just a heads up for the local listeners: Andrew Branca is coming back to Raleigh on August 7th for an NC Law of Self Defense seminar. I've taken this class, and read his book, and highly recommend it. Use the code triangle at checkout and you'll save 10% on the price of the class.
