Memoirist and filmmaker Curtis Chin on pitching for national press, booking venues through cold emails, and making a high-volume book events strategy financially sustainable.   You'll learn:Why Curtis booked readings before his memoir released to drive pre-orders, and what that early push unlocked. How he found venues by researching programs and series online, then sending cold outreach without overcomplicating it. A practical way to define your “audience” so your outreach targets the right communities and institutions. How to write a venue email that creates urgency (a “hook” and a reason to say yes now), without sounding gimmicky. A press pitching approach that starts local, builds credibility, and then moves toward national outlets. What his spreadsheets are (and aren't) for, and a lightweight way to track outreach and payments without building a complicated system. How he initially used a publisher budget, then supplemented it with community funding when the budget wasn't enough. Why momentum compounds (your growing “resume” of events and media makes the next invitations easier), and how to lean into that effect. How he structures his day to keep writing, business logistics, and book marketing moving at the same time. How getting paid for talks changed the economics of touring, and why nonfiction subject expertise can create more paid speaking opportunities.  Resources & Links:

Saudi music producer Saud Alturki: 'High Octane,' Busta Rhymes and the pressure that made him

The TWENTY30's co-hosts Hanaa Almoaibed and Lucien Zeigler sit down with Saud Alturki, Saudi music producer, curator, and founder of Brij Entertainment ahead of the release of his third album, High Octane. A project two and a half years in the making, the track list reads like a love letter to hip hop royalty. Busta Rhymes. Swizz Beatz. West Side Boogie. Rhapsody, whom Saud calls his favorite female MC alive today.    Working with his creative director Chindi, who turned every production conversation into something closer to a therapy session, Saud landed on a concept that's deeply rooted in where he's from, the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.   Saud takes us back to the beginning: a freshman at McGill in Montreal, freezing through his first Canadian winter and discovering that music wasn't just something he loved — it was something he could do. A move to LA, a chance encounter at a Verizon store with a gospel-tinged R&B singer named Bernard, and seven years of patience later, he finally put out his first single. That story alone sets the tone for everything that follows: Saud is someone who builds slowly, deliberately, and for keeps.   But the conversation doesn't stop at the album. Saud talks about what it really takes to build a music industry in Saudi Arabia — not just a music scene. Venues, labels, studios, government support, festivals like Middle Beast that have built an entire ecosystem around artists. He's careful to say Saudi isn't quite an industry yet, but the infrastructure is finally arriving, and the talent — including his Brij Entertainment artist Hajaj, the first Saudi to perform at Grammy weekend in LA — is already outpacing it.   There's also a sharp, honest take on the streaming era, why dropping albums in 2025 is "not the best move" (and why he's doing it anyway), the emerging Saudi genre Hoppe — a fusion of Sambri and hip hop that he wishes he'd invented — and what he tells young artists in Riyadh who have every resource he never had at 17.   High Octane drops after Ramadan.

GigPig, the UK's leading live music marketplace, will expand into Ireland in early 2026 – its first international rollout – following investment from Best Nights VC. Best Nights VC, the venture capital investment unit of Mast-Jägermeister SE, has backed GigPig to accelerate expansion into new markets. The Ireland launch will begin in Dublin and Belfast, with GigPig working closely with independent venues, multi-site pub groups, hotels and local artists to build a strong, locally rooted network for live music. GigPig is already used by more than 3,000 venues and 18,000 artists across the UK. Since 2023, the platform has facilitated 120,000 gigs, saving hospitality venues £7m in booking fees and generating £24m for artists. On average, hospitality venues that host live music increase customer spend by up to 89%, footfall by 36%, 61% in dwell time and see a 48% uplift in repeat visits (Source: CGA Live Music Index) Kit Muir-Rogers, Co-Founder of GigPig, said: "We launched GigPig with the belief that live music shouldn't be confined to dedicated venues – that any hospitality space can be a stage. We've proven the case in the UK, bringing more live music to pubs, bars, hotels and restaurants, and helping to establish a seed music venue movement. Ireland has one of the strongest live music cultures in the world, and hospitality venues sit right at the heart of that. We want to support that culture with better tools and a simpler way for venues and artists to connect. This is the natural next step for GigPig and an important milestone as we begin to scale internationally." Lorrain, Managing Director at Best Nights VC, said: "GigPig is bringing people back together in real life. In a world dominated by digital experiences, their platform doesn't just make live music easier to access – it creates moments where artists, audiences and communities can truly connect. This is exactly the kind of impact Best Nights VC champions: businesses that power meaningful IRL experiences and strengthen the nightlife economy and entertainment culture. We're excited to support GigPig as they internationalise and continue turning nights out into real human connections." Founded in 2022, GigPig was created to solve a long-standing challenge in hospitality: while live music drives footfall, atmosphere and spend, the process of booking and managing it is often time-consuming, inconsistent and expensive. GigPig provides hospitality operators with a single platform to book, manage, pay for and promote live music, replacing fragmented processes with one system across operations, finance and marketing. In close partnership with operators and stakeholders across the UK hospitality sector, GigPig has also helped define and establish the seed music venue sector — the pubs, bars and hospitality spaces that provide artists with their first paid stages. Seed music venues form the foundation of the live music ecosystem, but were fragmented prior to GigPig's launch, leaving their contribution to the wider music industry largely unrecognised. Venues and artists interested in joining the platform ahead of launch are encouraged to register at GigPig.ie. Further European expansion is planned following a successful rollout in Ireland. Episode 315 dives into a conversation Canada needs to be having right now. Erin Benjamin, President and CEO of the Canadian Live Music Association, breaks down why live music is one of the most powerful and misunderstood economic engines in the country. This episode goes far beyond concerts and culture, unpacking how live music fuels jobs, tourism, talent attraction, and city growth, while contributing billions to Canada's GDP. Despite its impact, the industry remains largely undervalued and underinvested, not because it lacks potential, but because business and policy have failed to fully recognize what's already working.Drawing from more than three decades in the music industry, Erin Benjamin explains what it will take to unlock the next phase of growth and why Canada is standing at a critical inflection point. From de-risking promoters and venues to integrating live music into economic development and tourism strategies, this episode makes a compelling case for why now is the moment to act. If Canada wants stronger cities, better talent retention, and globally competitive cultural industries, this conversation makes it clear that investing in live music isn't optional anymore, it's strategic.Rockstars, I just want to say thank you. Chavka takes listeners inside the campaign, describing the “standing room only” meeting that started it all and explaining why scheduling predictability and respect—not just wages—drove the vote. He also discusses the challenges of the "overhire" system and what lies ahead as workers move toward bargaining their first contract. Then, Jody Calemine, Director of Advocacy for the AFL-CIO, provides a critical legislative update from Capitol Hill. He details the bipartisan passage of the Protect America's Workforce Act in the House, which aims to restore collective bargaining rights for federal workers, and outlines the strategy to overcome the Senate filibuster. Calemine also discusses the labor movement's push for AI Guardrails, explaining why states must retain the power to regulate technology to protect worker privacy and job security. Featured Guests: Ryan Chavka, Business Agent, IATSE Local 22 Jody Calemine, Director of Advocacy, AFL-CIO Hosted by: Ed "Flash" Ferenc

Hello Groovers, This week's Liquid Sunshine replays last night's wild ride at 'Global Sounds from the Underground'—a boundary-breaking set that ping-pongs from Balkan hotstepping to Afrobeat fire, Dutch dub experiments to Persian-tinged funk, with zero regard for geography or genre rules. From William Onyeabor's synth-funk and Fela Kuti's revolutionary grooves to Doe Maar's Dutch dubby reggae and the Mauskovic Dance Band's psychedelic heat, every track brings its own flavor while keeping the energy locked in that sweet spot between hypnotic and explosive. It's two hours of proof that the underground sounds best when it's truly global—no borders, no boundaries, just pure groove from every corner of the planet. Today we're putting The Tonearm's needle on pianist and composer Noah Franche-Nolan.Noah's latest album, Rose-Anna, is named after his Acadian great-grandmother, a church organist from Grand Falls, New Brunswick. The Acadians are French-speaking people with deep roots in Canada's Maritime provinces. The Acadians were expelled from their land by the British in the late 1700s and many of them migrated south to Louisiana where they became known by their more famous name, the Cajuns. Noah's family connection runs deep through the record and he even plays organ on two tracks, honoring the woman who sparked his musical heritage. The album pairs him with bassist Jodi Proznick and drummer Nicholas Bracewell in a trio that displays deftness with groove-driven chops, tender hymns and free exploration. The music conjures thoughts of home, family, and what gets passed down through generations.Noah's also one half of Arid Landscapes, an ambient electroacoustic project with guitarist Dan Pitt, that takes a totally different approach—live looping, processing, and soundscapes that feel vast and open. But first they chat about:Half a million pounds is being distributed in the UK to grassroots venues artists and events - and it's money gathered from the levy on ticket sales in the UK. Steve and Stu discuss how this money is being spent – and how it will make a difference.Last week, Steve spoke to highly successful UK manager Niamh Byrne (Blur, Gorillaz and more)  and you'll be able to hear that interview in a couple of weeks. But one notable thing she spoke about was how managers are working harder than ever, and need to provide more services than before. So what is a manager's job now? Also at the Music Ally Connect conference, a key Universal music exec spoke about how AI can create new songs when one song is “covered” by AI versions of other artists: “I really want to hear what it sounds like for Jimi Hendrix to play Bitches Brew”. But do people really want to hear AI-generated cover versions? Then the duo speak to Ricky Bates and he discusses the reality of running a local grassroots venue in 2026 – and it's a solid-gold local venue that has hosted most of today's biggest bands on their way up. It's where both Coldplay and Manic Street Preachers signed their first deals, and how Green Day "accidentally" played their Kerplunk! album launch show at the Joiners. The public podcast contains highlights of the interview – however Patreon Superfan listeners can hear the whole interview as this week's lock-in content! Venues don't gamble with their space—or their reputation. In this episode, Krisy Thomas, Senior Educator of the CWP Society, is joined by Nikki Rodgers, Master Certified Wedding Planner and Certified Educator, and Aisha Garnett, Master Certified Wedding Planner and Certified Educator, for a candid conversation about why certification instantly changes how venues perceive and trust wedding planners. We break down why certification instantly changes the way managers read your emails, respond to your calls, and welcome you on site, and how that shift gets you onto preferred lists faster. With master certified planners Nikki Rogers and Aisha Garnett, we dig into the signals that matter most to venues: realistic timelines, airtight communication, contract fluency, and calm, quiet problem solving when the inevitable curveballs hit.  Across candid stories and practical tactics, we map the journey from “optional add-on” to “essential partner.” You'll hear how to make your first contact count, the questions that prove you've done your homework, and the small behaviors—respecting policies, confirming logistics early, sharing clean run-of-show updates—that build trust long before event day. We also explore why staying current on tools like 3D floor plans and collaborative timeline software isn't just modern—it's a competitive advantage that lightens venue workloads and elevates guest experience.  If you want steady referrals, faster access to preferred vendor lists, and invitations to styled shoots and venue-led events, this conversation shows the path: pair formal certification with consistent, predictable execution.
