Order in the Court: Is the Judiciary in Crisis Under This Trump Presidency? (w/ Professor Tara Grove)

American democracy faces a defining challenge as the judiciary—our system's intended steady hand—confronts unprecedented attacks from a presidency openly questioning its legitimacy. Trump's declaration that he can ignore Supreme Court rulings represents more than partisan rancor; it threatens constitutional governance itself.Professor Tara Grove joins the pod and offers critical perspective by examining historical confrontations between courts and presidents. While Lincoln tested judicial authority during the Civil War and FDR privately threatened to defy the Supreme Court during WWII, today's explicit challenges to judicial legitimacy feel distinctly dangerous. When Roosevelt informed his attorney general that Nazi saboteurs would not be released regardless of court rulings, this knowledge influenced justices to approve military tribunals rather than risk institutional humiliation. Similarly, when implementing Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court adopted the notoriously weak "all deliberate speed" standard specifically because justices feared southern states would openly defy stronger mandates. These historical examples reveal the judiciary's fundamental vulnerability—courts possess neither budget authority nor enforcement powers, only judgment. Their effectiveness depends entirely on other branches' willingness to comply with rulings. The post-Civil Rights era established a crucial norm of compliance that Trump now threatens to unravel. His administration has already demonstrated selective compliance, ignoring the TikTok ban and twisting itself into knots to justify not returning Bimbo Abrebo Garcia from El Salvador despite court orders. As the Court prepares to rule on birthright citizenship, religious education funding, trans rights, and redistricting, justices must weigh not just legal principles but whether their decisions will maintain institutional credibility if openly defied. This precarious position raises profound questions: Are we witnessing democracy's unraveling or just another challenging chapter in America's constitutional experiment? And what responsibility do citizens bear in reinforcing judicial authority through our own respect for constitutional norms?-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

Joined by Ryan Petty, a Parkland father, they explore the demands of student activists, the effectiveness of current gun laws, and the importance of classroom safety measures. The conversation delves into the indoctrination of students regarding gun control, the media's portrayal of protests, and practical solutions for enhancing school safety. The episode concludes with a call for responsible activism and the need for a strong Second Amendment advocacy. Takeaways Gun control protests often lack practical solutions. Classroom safety measures are crucial for student protection. Media representation can skew public perception of protests. Students are often influenced by indoctrination in education. Practical solutions for school safety are often overlooked. The Second Amendment is a fundamental right that should be defended. Activism should focus on real issues rather than slogans. Gun-free zones can attract violent incidents. The NRA plays a vital role in Second Amendment advocacy. Public safety should be prioritized without infringing on rights. Proposed amendments to South African Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) regulations will “basically control the possession of firearms everywhere” - and will “constrain the ability of the security industry to respond to potentially dangerous situations”. This is the warning from attorney Martin Hood who is concerned that there's “some terminology in these proposals that are ideological - and I think that they've overstepped the mark, and there's going to be consequences for them that may be very difficult for them to deal with”. Hood says the government's view of the private security industry as a threat is “completely unjustified…The private security industry is not going to be the spearhead of a revolution in this country. It actually stopped that in July of 2021.” He urges the public to lodge objections to the proposed amendments, and adds: “the view of the industry is that these proposals are unlawful.…the industry and broader society may have no option but to take them to court because the consequence of them coming into effect in the way that they are will be an adverse consequence on the ability of all of us to protect ourselves and our assets”.

Why do mass shootings occur? Trigger Points author Mark Follman explains warning signs, behavioral assessment, and how to stop attacks before they happen.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1140What We Discuss with Mark Follman:Mass shootings are not random events, but involve a "pathway to violence" where perpetrators plan their attacks over time, showing warning signs that create opportunities for intervention.Mental illness is not the primary cause of mass shootings. While mental health issues may be present, perpetrators are typically making deliberate choices driven by factors like anger, isolation, and perceived grievances rather than psychosis. Many mass shooters seek notoriety and are influenced by previous attackers through emulation behavior — they want to transform from nobody to somebody through violence and media attention.Warning signs that appear before attacks often include threatening communications, research/planning behaviors, significant life stressors, and social isolation — but these must be evaluated collectively rather than as a checklist.Behavioral threat assessment teams offer an effective prevention approach by bringing together mental health professionals, law enforcement, and educators to identify at-risk individuals and provide constructive interventions like counseling, education support, and family involvement — showing that these tragedies can be prevented with the right collaborative approach. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! They highlight the role of administration policies and the return of egg-laying birds after millions were culled to curb bird flu.Next, they dissect Trump's decision to pull Rep. They also suggest it signals concerns over the GOP's ability to win a special election in Florida next week and hold Stefanik's seat in New York. Finally, they shake their heads as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer pushes a ban on ninja swords in response to rising knife and sword attacks. Unsurprisingly, these attacks increased greatly after the UK enacted strict gun control. On this episode of the podcast, Erich Pratt, Senior Vice President of Gun Owners of America, dives into the impact of the Dickey Amendment — a measure that once prevented taxpayer dollars from funding gun control advocacy. He explains how the 2018 clarification opened the door for politicized research aimed at pushing gun confiscation and background checks.Additionally, Pratt criticized the Biden Administration for deliberately omitting self-defense statistics that showcase the benefits of lawful gun ownership. He shares compelling data on the effectiveness of concealed carriers, highlighting a study showing they stop active shooters 51.5% of the time, outperforming law enforcements 44.6%. Furthermore, Pratt makes the case for defunding the ATF, dismantling its firearm registry and urges listeners to act by using social media and direct outreach to hold lawmakers accountable. You can learn more about Gun Owners of America by visiting their website: GunOwners.org. While there may be another story taking place, vocal characters on social media received the statement to suggest that the noteworthy firearms manufacturer was accusing its critics of being "anti-gun" or anathema when it comes to the Gun Culture. Does this accusation stick?
