The heart and soul of any community is almost always with the young families that establish long term residence and lay the foundation for multi-generational presence. In the early 1990's a local general contractor applied for permission to build 44 single family homes in Calistoga. The fascinating story how that developer chose to build 22 of the 44 homes as affordable, focusing on local residents and discouraging second home/investment buyers, is worth reviewing almost 30 years later. This first conversation of four is with Paul and Kate Coates, long established residents and, for many, beloved residents of Calistoga.
Wow. I mean...wow. WOW! We were honored to be a tiny part of the Improv Theatre Sydney's 4th Birthday festival with this crazy-go-nuts show. 10 great improvisers joined us on stage, and a blast was had by all. Except maybe Cale... He seemed ambivalent to be honest.Guests: Cale Bain, Carlo Ritchie (The Bear Pack), Edan Lacey, Kate Coates, Laura Hart, Zoe Rae, Maddie Parker, Clare Cavanagh, Josh Magee, Marcel Blanch-De WiltRegulars: Matthew Worboys, Damian Johnstone
Our third episode with totally legit improvisor Kate Coates! Join us as we learn the rules.
"This podcast can't be listened to standing up. Coz it will knock you right over." - Possibly the best review we've had, from Kate Coates! Our two-time improv teacher has come to see if the student has become the master.
Our special guest (Kate Coates!) actually taught Matthew and Damian improv for a time! And now she's back to reap what she's sown.

You finally did it, you scumbums. You brought down one of Sydney's top 5 comedy-adjacent podcasts, right in the prime of its life. Hear our solemn death rattle, as recorded live at The Record Crate, Monday the 21st of March 2016, featuring special guests Simon Bosco, Ben Kochan, Reece Piper, Nikko Malyon, Alexei Toliopoulos, Kate Coates, and Fran Middleton, as well as a live performance from *musical guest* Anatole. Also, we cast Bernie Sanders in the movie 'Skeletonhood'!Please note - we are new at recording live podcasts, and this one has a couple of bits of peaky audio, particularly during Anatole's performance. For lack of a more elegant solution, we urge you to track down his immaculately produced (and mixed, and mastered, and written, and performed...) records. Both his debut Westbrook and recent follow-up Surrounds are yours to stream on Bandcamp, and available as very reasonably priced downloads as well. However, the only way to hear this insane, exclusive remix is right here on SSJ.CLICK HERE to download! Thanks to Justin Andersen for the photo. It's not a very good photo, but we appreciate the DIY spirit.
This week, we're joined by the hilarious Kate Coates and Fran Middleton, who introduce us to their friends, journalists Leigh Sales and Kerry O'Brien, and then stick around to discuss cats, artificial intelligence, and dental Christmas miracles. Plus, we play an exciting round of That Sounds Good, What's That About? where we explore "Know Where To Bee: A Silent Musical In 3B".MUSIC USED:SSJ Theme 3000: Xavier Rubetzki NoonanNowhere To Be: SPORTSTSGWTA Theme: Xavier Rubetzki NoonanFEATURE TRACK:We are stoked to be playing songs by SPORTS this week. The young Ohio pop-punk band's 2014 debut 'Sunchokes' has been on high rotation at SSJ HQ since we first heard it earlier this year, and its newly-released follow-up, 'All Of Something', is every bit as satisfying (if not more!) We're featuring the irresistible Reality TV from the new record, but if you want to hear more, head to SPORTS' Bandcamp page!CLICK HERE to download!Blow up our Twitters: @katewearscoates @Fran_Middleton @XavierRN @tmsndrsn
