Das Schweizerische Zentrum für Islam und Gesellschaft wurde vor 10 Jahren gegründet, eigentlich aufgrund eines Vorstosses des damaligen SP-Nationalrats Mario Fehr. Er schlug vor, die Schweiz solle ihre eigenen Imame ausbilden, als Massnahme gegen Radikalisierung. Dieses Ziel wurde zwar nicht erreicht, das Interesse an einer Imamausbildung war und ist zu klein. Entstanden ist aber das SZIG als Anlaufstelle für Musliminnen und Muslime und als wichtige Anlaufstelle für Behörden. Dies obwohl die SVP versucht hatte, ein solches Zentrum zu verhindern. Seit 10 Jahren erforscht das SZIG den Islam und vermittelt, in Spitälern beispielsweise oder auch in Gefängnissen.
