What if growing older wasn't just about adding years but about stepping into wisdom, influence, and purpose? What if instead of fading into the background, we embraced a new role—a role of guidance, leadership, and transformation? Today, we're speaking with someone who has dedicated his life to redefining what it truly means to age. Dr. Marc B. Cooper is a coach, author, and thought leader who challenges the idea that aging is simply about preservation. Instead, he asks us to consider: Are we merely “Older,” or are we evolving into “Elder”? Because there is a difference. Older is resignation—Elder is possibility. Older is retreat—Elder is engagement. Older is a conclusion—Elder is a beginning. Dr. Cooper's work—including his book Older to Elder: The Thinking and Being of a Contemporary Elder—lays out a clear, compelling path for those 60 and beyond who refuse to be sidelined by outdated expectations. Instead, he encourages us to step forward as storytellers, mentors, and wisdom-keepers for the generations that follow. In our conversation today, we'll explore how to embrace this powerful transition. What does it take to move from simply aging to becoming a true Elder? How do we overcome ageism and societal doubts? And most importantly—how can we shape the legacy we leave behind? Dr. Cooper has coached, written, and traveled the world sharing these insights, and today, we're honored to have him with us. So, let's get started. I'm your host, Paul Vogelzang, and this is The Not Old – Better Show.
In this Living to 100 Club episode, Dr. Joe speaks with Dr. Marc B. Cooper, facilitator of The Contemporary Elders Institute, on elder wisdom and the transformative inner journey of aging. Dr. Cooper shares an Ayurvedic view on aging, suggesting that as our physical bodies remain steady, our “inner space” contracts. This creates an emptiness that must be filled with warmth and purpose. They discuss the untapped power of the over-65 demographic, emphasizing the potential for elders to shape the future responsibly. Dr. Cooper offers insights on using intentional self-reflection and understanding one's higher self. This is a way to find purpose, especially when traditional roles fade. The conversation also explores the role of AI and technology in supporting purposeful aging, with Dr. Cooper balancing innovation with genuine, spontaneous connection in his work. This episode invites listeners to reimagine aging and embrace the wisdom of elders in creating positive societal change. Mini Bio Dr. Marc B. Cooper is a science researcher, academician and seasoned private practitioner with a distinguished career spanning health care, consulting and personal transformation. As a management consultant, speaker, futurist, life coach and transformational teacher, he has impacted organizations and individuals in over 17 countries. Dr. Cooper is the author of a dozen books, including the upcoming Older to Elder, and serves as founder of Contemporary Elders Institute. His work redefines aging by embracing the role of "Elder" as a source of wisdom, purpose and positive societal influence, guiding older adults to transition beyond traditional views of aging into lives of renewed purpose and impact. Key Takeaways Inner Space in Aging: Filling the natural emptiness of aging with purpose. Elder Influence: Leveraging the power of older adults for societal impact. Once again, the operative word for this episode is Quest, as we welcome author, mentor, and game changer, Dr. Marc B. Cooper. Marc's mission and personal quest is to restore a sense of meaning and purpose for those of us who fall into the "senior citizen" bracket (but, really, it's a timeless mission for all of us regardless of age). The title of his new book. "Older to Elder," says it all, so I won't try to recap it for you here but, rather, encourage you to listen to this fascinating conversation that might very well transform your life. Marc is, like me, a Philly boy, so I plan to invite him back to talk pizza in a future episode, but in this episode, you will hear the culmination of a lifelong journey of wisdom-seeking that far surpasses the search for the perfect pizza (except in the metaphorical sense, of course). For those who want to follow-up and get his book (and this is unsolicited, as I get no kickback from Amazon or anyone for promoting Marc's book), here's a link.In the meantime, join Dr. Marc Cooper and me as we discuss why becoming an elder is far more important than simply becoming older.....NOTE: This episode marks the end of our 2024 season, a year full of a number of fabulous conversations with fellow questers on pizza and other important matters. Our tagline, as you may know, is a "Journey of Self-Discovery Through Pizza," and this year's episodes have taken us deeper into the "self-discovery" aspect of that mission. Check out our archives for episodes you may have missed. We plan to return in early 2025 with a whole new season of thought-provoking and, of course, delicious explorations in our never-ending Pizza Quest, both literal and metaphorical. Have a joyous holiday season and we'll see you in the new year!Click here for the video versions of Pizza Quest. One World in a New World with Dr. Marc B Cooper - Author, Elder Senior Consultant We dive into the world of elder wisdom and a discussion from an elder's perspective of how they are being treated today. Marc's experience is that the garnering of wisdom from the geriatrically gifted is missed by the society today. Elders are just seen as old people with little value. Zen's counter is that he and others like him relish the mentorship of elders, noting several of his own that are in their 80s and still highly functional with expertise and experience that is priceless to others. The reality is he is rare and that indeed, elders aren't viewed as valuable. Marc admits that intellectually he didn't have an awareness of his connection with others, nature and life when he was young. That came later. He felt like it was more somatic, and experience outside his intellect, of being in nature and enjoying its virtues. His insights from longevity and a keen mind are well worth the view. If this is going to be the way it is, negating our indigenous cultures and ignoring our connections to each other, what's next? He askes a pertinent and poignant question of, 'How can people alter there perception of that which is going on around them in such a way that the hostility diminishes and people don't always have to be right?' Marc relates that we have a one in four hundred billion chance of being born, so being here today is like winning the lottery. We just don't respect that, in his opinion. He shares so much more knowledge and wisdom that is worth listening to, pondering and taking it in for your own growth in understanding beyond your years. Marc's present work is with elders in preparation of transition, easing their concerns with conversations of a higher order, a self-awareness program for the geriatrically gifted that makes a real difference in how elders handle end of life scenarios. Death isn't difficult, it's living that is the challenge. Connect with Dr. Cooper on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmarcbcooper/ Dr. Marc B.
