As we've recently discovered (thanks to viewer ‘Cornbread' in the YouTube chat), our ‘promos' aren't really ‘promos' at all. They are ProMOREs. Because they are longer than most other shows… there's more. Now the proMORE for HRN 451 was over three hours. That's gonna be hard to duplicate. But despite David W0DHG's prediction/request/protest at this beginning to this proMORE (and he kinda always tries that), we went over 90 minutes. And instead of tacking it onto the regular 452 episode, we're giving it its own spot in the feed. This is for Hardcore HRN fans only. And we still don't know what the Sunday show will be about. Apparently we don't have to.

Happy Thanksgiving from Jimmy, BSR, and HRN! Today we're joined by culinary writer and historian John Taylor who calls in from the future, based 12 hours ahead in Cambodia. He's here to talk about his new anthology book, Charleston to Phnom Penh: A Cook's Journal, as well as to dish out some Thanksgiving food for thought. To start, John takes Jimmy way back to the ‘80s, when John first moved to Charleston, South Carolina to open Hoppin' John's bookstore. There were only a handful of restaurants at the time, and John tracked the city's culinary renaissance over the years as a culinary historian (he is not a chef, he insists). After initially finding a vacuum, he watched as Charleston's food scene blossomed by going back to its culinary roots (shrimp and grits, anyone?).Later on in the episode, John goes over some of the recipes you can find in his book. How does roast chicken with butter beans, rice, piccalilli, okra, and mustard greens with a hot pepper and vinegar relish sound for Thanksgiving dinner? Maybe pair it off with your favorite craft cider. We're thankful for you here at BSR!Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. The two discuss the past, present, and future of natural wine in Slovakia, working on a family vineyard, and how climate change has and will affect yields, among other topics. The Magula Family Winery passionately creates natural wines exclusively from their own organically grown grapes of Slovak ingenious varieties. Their winegrowing journey started in 2007, when they re-planted an old vineyard that was returned to their family. Since 2016 they have farmed bio-dynamically. They care deeply about the nature and the environment in which we exist, trying to live in harmony with it. Their wines, mainly of red varieties, are intense, yet subtle and gentle, with crisp and charming character of northern terroirs.HRN on Tour is powered by Simplecast.

It was time to do a promo for HRN 451, to be titled New Rig… Who Dis?. David W0DHG was driving home (LA) from San Francisco. Gary K4AAQ anchored from the Studio in the Bonus Room Above the Garage on the North Side of Fort Mill (SC), in the Shadow of Charlotte, at the Foot of Mt. Belzoni.A little over three hours later, then were done… apparently only because David arrived home.David was in SF to visit one of his daughters. While they were attending an event, David's rental car (good gas mileage offset rental price) was broken into, and his backpack with a PC and his AnyTone HT (in the trunk, not on the seat, so the thief was onto that trick) were stolen. And a window was broken. So much for savings. Likely his 2007 Toyota FJ, bristling with antennae, would not have been so assaulted. No, it doesn't take three hours to tell that story, so clearly there's more. Probably about 45 minutes of real entertainment, sadly embedded in 3+ hours of ‘show'.Oh, and ‘PROMORE'? That may have been a typo in the chat, or it may have been deliberate. Anyway, it's a new way to label our extended ‘promo' videos. WARNING!! A Zoom issue caused David's end of the call to echo everything Gary said. Gary - hearing his own voice which he loves - was good with that. Gary's wife Cyndi KD4ACW, said it was ‘very annoying'. This Website agrees with Cyndi. Listen at your own risk

On today's episode, I am excited to share the audio recording of a live event I recently emceed for HRN. Lessons Learned: Tales from Small Business Owners features captivating stories from four storytellers who opened up about their trials and tribulations in the restaurant business. Sponsored by TD Bank, the event took place at the Tilit NYC Showroom. In addition to introducing our fabulous guests, I sprinkled some of my own stories throughout the night. The first small business storyteller was Eric Huang of Pecking House, Brooklyn. An Eleven Madison Park alum, the pandemic caused Eric to reexamine his career and business. He found that fried chicken made him rethink everything.Johnny Spero of Bar Spero in Washington D.C. told the story of finding success with his Georgetown restaurant, Reverie, but then being met with catastrophe when it burned down. He emphasized not giving up on your passion and being sure to stop and feel your feelings.Yajaira Gonzalez of Pop and Pour in Washington Heights spoke about her business surviving the pandemic. Yajaira said her strength came from her ability to find positives even in the face of challenges. She advised that people should do their research before making decisions, be flexible, understand sacrifices, and use professionals when needed.Buddy the Bar's Claire Sprouse, owner of the now-closed Hunky Dory in Crown Heights, Brooklyn closed out the evening. She told the crowd that believed that her location and community kept her going while she was in business. The timing of the pandemic and the need to prioritize her personal life helped her make the decision to permanently close the restaurant, however. She said she thinks anyone considering the restaurant industry should take a deep look at what they really want before jumping in.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Remembering Anne Saxelby

On October 9th of last year the HRN community was devastated by the passing of Anne Saxelby. Anne was many things to many people. She was the co-founder of Saxelby Cheesemongers and an ardent supporter of artisan food producers. She was one of the earliest HRN hosts, launching Cutting the Curd in 2009. She was a wife and mother to 3 young children. As the first anniversary of her loss draws near, we pay tribute to the many ways she impacted this world for the better. Longtime HRN host Harry Rosenblum speaks about his own friendship with Anne, and guides us through this episode. We hear clips of Anne in conversation with her Cutting the Curd colleagues Greg Blais and Diane Stemple; speaking about the early days of Saxelby Cheese, the origins of her radio show, and her philosophy of customer service. We also hear reflections from Brian Kenney, Deborah Matsner, and Anne's father, Bill Saxelby, who share glimpses of Anne as a friend, as a business owner, and as a mother. As Steven Jenkins told The New York Times, “Anne Saxelby was the U.S. ambassador for American cheese makers….her yearslong, tireless effort to promote them and make them mainstream will forever have its effect, and will long be remembered.” If you wish to carry on Anne's legacy, consider a gift to the Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund. Photo courtesy of c. bay milin photographyCutting the Curd is Powered by Simplecast.

He sits down with Dylan Heuer for a conversation about biodiversity, regeneration, and microbiomes. Plus he talks about Italian fermented foods, shares why he thinks fermentation can't be taught on Zoom, and describes the satisfaction that comes along with making something with your hands.HRN is back "On Tour" thanks , in part, to the generous support of the Julia Child Foundation.HRN On Tour is powered by Simplecast.
