The Kingston Art Tour is all about becoming part of the art. Local artist Joanne Gervais wanted to create a uniquely eclectic range of art experiences for people to enjoy around town. Among the many cultural events on the Kingston Art Tour will be an encounter with Vikings. These ones have come not from Scandinavia, but rather from Gatineau. Host Nav Nanwa had a fun chat with both Joane and the Jarl of Hafn Hullsborg. You might remember our conversation with Huntsville councilor Bob Stone. He talked about the town offering riverfront homes and $80-thousand dollar return-of-service agreements. As nice as that sounds, a local facebook group thinks there might be something more to offer. In this episode we discuss the future of concerts and festivals with Mark Monahan. Mark is the CEO of Bluesfest, one of Canada's largest festivals drawing over 300,000 concertgoers each year. When COVID struck, Mark's organization needed to make the hard decision to cancel their summer event. They moved quickly to pivot their events to online. We chat with Mark about how the online experiment went down, their results and whether online concerts are a temporary workaround or permanent part of our concert experiences moving forward. Dance critic Mark Monahan presents music for the ballet from the 1930s to the present day. Including music by Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Khachaturian and Philip Glass.
Dance critic Mark Monahan goes on a whistle-stop tour through the first 100 years of the ballet as we know it today, looking at the ground-breaking works that took cities such as Paris and St Petersburg by storm. He traces the history of ballets such as The Nutcracker and Swan Lake which were - surprisingly - both resounding flops when Tchaikovsky premiered them, only being rescued later by the dance-maker Marius Petipa. And he looks at the enormous influence of Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, beginning with Mikhail Fokine's 1907 ballet Chopiniana, leading to famous scores by Stravinsky and Ravel.
