“As someone who grew up in a time when girls were pitted against each other and seen as competition, I love that we're in this era where, just being in each other's corners is celebrated!”This is the GIVE HER FLOWERS episode! We talk about the women who inspire us, the women who have moved us to action, and the young women we are raising. In light of Women's History Month (March) and in recognition of International Women's Day (March 8th), we want to specifically thank every female here for all the ways you show up in your spheres of influence, everyday. We know that you do so while juggling the needs of those who depend on you and while navigating the various biases and stereotypes that others places upon you; and yet you continue to show up, day after day, with strength, courage, grace, and wisdom. We see you, and we celebrate you!As always, we are so grateful that all of you are here in this space, in the sport, and in this world! #Keepshowingup and keep making strides in being the change we wish to see!Special thanks to our Audio Engineer, Mark Kalagayan, from the non-profit, SPARC Worldwide. The Making Strides Podcast is about building representation and about changing the ways we expect ourselves and others to show up in the running world. HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY!!! Your faves are back in the studio with another dilemmas episode. To start off (2:03) this week's dilemmas episode, we come in with Rema's "Woman" as an ode to the global celebration of IWD. Then we catch up a little bit on our week but that was shortlived (7:05) as clearly Naomie pissed Danny off this week. Tune in on next week's episode for all the tea. Then we delve straight into your dilemmas starting off with a guy who is frustrated with the ideology of men providing in relationships (10:00), and poses the question to the room, what is the benefit of being in a relationship for a man? Then we address a dilemma where a girl feels her friends are not as cool as her (40:10) and is tired AF! Then another girl is basking in her suitor-surplus era (50:18) as men can't get enough of her and was spoiled rotten on valentines day. A lady also wants some advice about a guy she likes and who likes her (52:51) but has refused to ask her on a date and now they are in a situationship. Then in the most controversial dilemma, a guy reaches out to us frustrated that his virgin girlfriend (1:10:12) is refusing to budge on sex and wants our opinion on his dilemma. And then we run through some crazy cheating stories (1:38:55) from Quora. We also close out with new music and movies (1:58:13) recommendations. Happy International Women's Day! We celebrate this year's theme by hearing from an architect and small business owner who has built her own success on the motto of showing up even when it's uncomfortable. Learn how this strategy led to building powerful networks and big opportunities. Networks are a critical way to meet and be mentored by people who share your perspective and have perhaps overcome some of your current challenges. Nothing is ever wasted- take inventory of the skills, experience and clarity about your preferences you gained even doing work you didn't love. Then. put those skills to use in work you do love. Stop accepting the premise of all or nothing in your career. You can make other choices if you ask for a different way of working that supports your well being. Women often won't show up in environments that are hostile to them, but you can't change anything if you don't get involved. You don't have to prove yourself by being everything to everybody. When we open doors for one another, we have the ability to distribute tasks and support one another. Happy International Women's Day! This episode of Sole Sisters is an ode to women runners! Alice has a lot of time to think as she bunkers down for Cyclone Alfred. She unearths the memories of two pioneer marathoners - Bobbi Gibb and Kathrine Switzer who were the first women to run the 42.2k distance in the late 60s, despite many people trying to stand in their way. Elise has done some modern-day research and found that women's marathon participation between Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast marathons comprised 27% on average between 2018-2023, with men making up 63% of the field. Participation was much more even in the half marathon. The pair then offer some general reflections on women's participation in marathons and the barriers that still exist that prevent or hinder women from running today. These include not having enough time to train, concerns for safety, childbirth and caring responsibilities. They also have a good chat on the role of confidence and ego in the marathon. You can read the piece Elise wrote on this “Mind the Marathon Gap” in The Blue Line last year. Alice and Elise also debrief the International Women's Day – Running Connection event organised by Love the Run last week. They rehash some of the conversation in the panel discussion about safety while running with ultra trail star Lucy Bartholomew and podiatrist/runner/coach/mum Sophie Fitt. Jess Stenson is the star of the results segment for her gutsy 2:22:56 run at Tokyo Marathon, while Izzi Batt-Doyle and Leanne Pompeani wait to line up at another Japanese race this weekend, Nagoya Marathon. Finally, here's a no-context link to a Roy and HG video commentating men's gymnastics from the Sydney Olympics. Today's Cast: Dan, Stugotz, David Samson, Billy, Jessica, and Jeremy. How many pushups did John Cena do before his naked appearance at the Oscars? Dan is very obviously crushed over the state of boxing as a lover of the sweet science. We guide him delicately through his emotions as we discuss Jake Paul and Mike Tyson and UFC 299. Then, Women's College Basketball was at its best over the weekend including buzzer beaters and a fight worthy of breaking out the hierarchy of escalating tensions. Jessica leads us through the weekend that was. Plus, Adnan Virk stops by as he and David recap their Oscars Watch Party and break down the biggest moments of the night. Also, everyone feels old, all 8 month olds are idiots, and LeBron James wishes us a Happy International Women's Day. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Happy International Women's Day! Honestly, I was low energy when I showed up today and just seeing Tanya's face cheered me right up. Maybe try to meet with a friend today in person or even on Facetime for a heart lift. The story of the day is Tanya's first near-death experience of the week, consisting of an electric blanket + a red light. Read your warning labels, people. Next up, is her story of customer service sending positive energy. Shep and I have laughed and laughed about this one and will be using this phrase until the day we die. Kind of like Tanya's other quote, “Everybody likes blue cheese”. So Shep gets a banjo! We're not even mad that “Dueling Banjos” is on repeat in our minds, keeping us up nights. This leads to a total room makeover with his banjo as the focal piece. Tanya's second near-death experience occurs at the Coler Mountain Bike Preserve and frighteningly, we almost lost her and Shawn in one exaggerated exercise exhibition. I suddenly want to hop on a helicopter and fly to Stoby's for cheese dip. Thank you for hanging out with us today!
