Some songs take the long way home. Jeff Middleton joins us to map that winding route—Jersey kid to Nashville lifer—through a Warner deal with The Dirt Drifters, a thousand-dollar RV that literally went up in flames, and the four-year journey of Drowns The Whiskey from a bus write to a multi-week No. 1 with Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert. It's a story of grit, timing, and how a better demo can change fate.We dig into the changing economics of songwriting—how streaming thinned the middle class that once survived on album cuts—and what it takes to keep going when the money and momentum don't line up. Jeff shares how co-writing became a learned craft, why he now “lets the room be the room,” and how switching from road mode to writer mode saved his best work. He also pulls back the curtain on American Knights, co-written with Austin Jenckes and Mike Walker, and the unusual path that gave the song multiple lives with Morgan Wallen and Lee Brice. Then there's AI. Jeff doesn't flinch from it—he uses Suno for fast, pitch-ready demos and even built Song Script AI to help writers with better prompts. But he's clear-eyed about the line: algorithms look backward; great songs reach forward. The job is still to move people, to write from the heart, and to make music that feels undeniably human. If you're an aspiring songwriter, you'll get field-tested advice, sharp reality checks, and a reminder that authenticity isn't a brand; it's the work.If this conversation hit a nerve, follow the show, share it with a friend who writes, and leave a quick review so more people can find these stories. Your support helps us keep bringing songwriters and their hard-won lessons to the mic.
In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles and Doug welcome back Andy, a school teacher and avid live music fan, to share his an After Show Report on the 2025 Bonnaroo Music Festival. Despite carefully planning his trip with his friend Teddy and driving nine hours to the festival, Andy faced a series of unexpected challenges and adventures. The trip kicks off with a tense interaction with law enforcement when they are pulled over by a Kentucky State Trooper, escalating as a K-9 unit arrives. Fortunately, they are allowed to proceed to Bonnaroo without any legal troubles.Upon arrival, Andy and Teddy set up their elaborate campsite, which included modern amenities like a solar generator and 42-inch TV. The first night involved acclimatizing to the youthful crowd and loud electronic dance music that played until the early hours. Things took a dramatic turn when Teddy experienced a sudden medical emergency and had to leave, promising to return later to pick Andy up. Later, a severe storm brought torrential rains and flooding, leading to the cancellation of the entire festival due to infrastructural failure. Despite disappointment, Andy encountered numerous acts of kindness from fellow festival-goers and eventually managed to get back home safely, albeit with a vivid, unforgettable experience.BANDS: Dogs in a Pile, Eurythmics, Foster the People, Goose, Insane Clown Posse, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Lemon Twigs, Luke Combs, Marcus King, Miranda Lambert, Parisi.VENUES: 2025 Bonnaroo Music Festival. The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
A fan hug mid-song. A chart where Megan Moroney owns the moment. Dolly Parton's quiet resilience. We chase the heartbeat of country right now and get brutally practical about how artists truly break through—and stay there—when the spotlight moves on.We start with a listener-fueled rundown of the Top 12 women in country, using each pick to explore story, sound, and why certain songs stick. From Gabby Barrett's early radio push to Trisha Yearwood's six-year return and Miranda Lambert's new edge, we dig into visuals, production choices, and the fan-first decisions that build true loyalty. Lainey Wilson's “walk offstage to hug a day-one” moment turns into a masterclass on brand gravity: authenticity you can feel from the cheap seats. Then we pivot into the mechanics: mainstream and indie charts, “country club” production vs band-in-the-room grit, and how sonic choices align—or clash—with the story you're selling. That sets the stage for an on-air deep dive into Jay's new book, Stand Out or Fade Out. Expect tactical advice on unifying your online image, building trust through consistency, and the proven cover-to-original strategy for short-form video. We also go inside the studio: producers vs. engineers, who actually elevates an artist's voice, and the small, unglamorous moves—like an intern who quietly finished painting a wall—that earn the big breaks.Threaded through it all: Dolly's health updates and record-setting chart legacy, a guitar pick gifted mid-show, and the reminder that reputation beats raw talent when careers get real. If you want a roadmap that blends heart, craft, and practical steps you can use tomorrow, this one's for you.Send us a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ The Jay Franze Show: https://thejayfranzeshow.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Reach Out: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Mailbag: https://jayfranze.com/mailbag/ Question of the Day: https://jayfranze.com/question/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Consulting: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Stand Out or Fade Out: https://jayfranze.com/books/

Nashville's songwriting community suffered a devastating loss with the passing of Brett James, a prolific songwriter who gave up medical school to pursue his passion for music. With 27 number one hits among his 500+ released songs, Brett's legacy includes classics like "Jesus Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood and "When the Sun Goes Down" by Kenny Chesney. His story reminds us how the unexpected paths we choose can lead to extraordinary impact. We dive into the ongoing story of Farm Aid, Willie Nelson's fundraiser supporting farming communities facing economic pressure. The recent Minneapolis concert featured legends like Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Bob Dylan, continuing a tradition that has responded to agricultural crises since the 1980s. Similarly, Luke Bryan's Farm Tour celebrates a decade of bringing music to rural America while collecting food donations for those in need. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as we explore artists who sound like others or from different eras. From Lainey Wilson echoing Miranda Lambert to Harry Connick Jr. channeling Frank Sinatra, these musical connections reveal how influence travels through generations of performers. Listeners share their own observations, creating a compelling tapestry of how country music continually evolves while honoring its roots.Current artist updates include Lainey Wilson canceling a show due to vocal issues, Brett Eldredge announcing his holiday Glow Live Tour, and Thomas Rhett expecting his fifth child. Erin Kinsey is only 25 but is already known as a successful songwriter and performer. She started of in a marching band at high school and now plays seven instruments. She rocks an electric guitar on stage and was put behind a piano by her mom, even though she didn't really liked the piano that much. Erin just finished her first headlining tour in the United States and visited The Hague for a show during the Once In A Blue Moon Festival. She has a huge following on social media and is building her career in no time. It is even as easy as it sounds, she admits in this episode of Countrykoorts. If you ever talk to her, be aware and don't compare a Chick-fil-A with a KFC, hahaha.

Send us a textMeet MacKenzie Lee, a Boston-based singer-songwriter who's crafting a unique musical identity she calls "dark pop." Stepping into our studio with the confidence of someone who's found her authentic voice, Mackenzie shares the winding path that led her from childhood singing to college acapella performances and finally to her current work with Red 13 Records. What makes MacKenzie's approach fascinating is her refusal to be boxed into conventional genres. Drawing inspiration from artists like Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, she's equally influenced by comedic musicians such as Bo Burnham and The Lonely Island—creative minds who blend impressive musical ability with clever, thought-provoking content. This unexpected combination hints at an artist determined to create music that's both emotionally resonant and intellectually engaging. The conversation takes us through Mackenzie's formative experiences, including how her acapella background trained her ear to deconstruct songs into their component parts. "You really learn to appreciate every single piece that goes into a song," she explains, describing how this shapes both her listening habits and creative process today. We also discover the emotional significance behind the grand piano visible during our interview—a treasured inheritance from her grandmother, the only other musician in her family. After discussing Mackenzie's debut single "Bad Taste on Love" and her upcoming release "The Ghost of Us," we shift to the latest country music news, covering artists like Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert supporting Texas flood victims. The episode culminates in a spirited debate about the greatest vocal collaborations of all time, with listeners passionately defending their favorites from Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton to modern pairings like Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show

Send us a textWhat makes a country music legend truly important? Is it chart success, cultural impact, or lasting influence? Jay Franze and Tiffany Mason tackle these questions head-on while reviewing a controversial list of "The 25 Most Important Women in Country Music" that has them both fired up from the start. The hosts share their predictions before diving into the rankings, confidently naming Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire as the obvious choices for the top spots. What follows is a passionate dissection of the list that places newer artists higher than established legends, sparking genuine outrage when they discover Dolly Parton ranks only seventh while Carrie Underwood claims the number one position."Where's her amusement park? Where's her giving back kids books that can't afford books? Where's her charity programs?" Tiffany questions, highlighting how the list seems to prioritize recent commercial success over decades of cultural impact and philanthropy. The conversation reveals a deeper issue about how female artists are evaluated in country music and the often arbitrary nature of industry rankings.Between their good-natured banter, the hosts also cover breaking news from Nashville, including Morgan Wallen's youth charity work, an exciting potential Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton collaboration, and Australia's growing country music scene. They wrap up with listener submissions about the most underrated female vocalists, creating a show that celebrates women in country music while questioning who gets to determine their "importance."LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show
