What can you do when life feels out of control and God seems silent? Today, our world can feel chaotic and unpredictable, but Esther 1 reminds us God can use even the messiest of situations to carry out his divine plan. In this episode, we step into the lavish Persian empire and see how political drama, royal pride, and unexpected courage become the raw material God uses to protect His people. Themes of this episode: The cost of courage. Queen Vashti stood her ground in an impossible situation. Sometimes obedience requires courage that comes with real consequences, and the challenge is trusting God enough to choose what's right, no matter the cost. Hard seasons can be preparation for your purpose. When you're in a situation you never saw coming—the job loss, the closed door, the disappointing outcome—trust that God is arranging and preparing everything for your good.Your place in God's story matters. You may feel ordinary or overlooked, but God is working through your life in ways that are far bigger than you know. Your part in His story is more significant than you could ever imagine.Show notes:Genealogy of JesusThe Persian PalaceFeasts and Festivals in the BibleWe love feedback, but can't reply without your email address.

We've seen the photos and videos on social media going viral every year, showing the mountains of rubbish that have to be dealt with after every new year's festival. Tents that got hit by the weather, covered in mud, with festival-goers who just don't want to deal with packing it back in their cars. But the clean up still has to be done, so what happens to all the rubbish left behind? LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Happy Hanukkah my friends! I can imagine that my saying that might make some of my Christian friends a bit uncomfortable. We would easily greet each other by saying Merry Christmas, but how many of us will include the Jewish holiday that corresponds with Christmas? Come along with me in this weeks podcast as we look at the value Christians can discover in the Jewish feasts and festivals along with celebrating the normal Christian holidays. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss America's everyman and one of its most indelible movie stars: James Stewart! Our returning guest is our dear friend Mitchell Beaupre, Head of Editorial at Letterboxd and our B-Sides today include Vivacious Lady, You Gotta Stay Happy, No Highway in the Sky, The Far Country, and Fools' Parade. We debate what it is exactly that made Stewart so relatable and endearing to millions, we marvel at his WWII service and how it affected his on-screen demeanor, and we acknowledge that even though he starred in dozens of westerns most people still remember him better as George Bailey from It's a Wonderful Life. Mitchell, Conor, and I discuss the incredible films he made with Anthony Mann, the late pictures he made with Andrew V. McLaglen, and the early starring roles in his career. We also mention how he was one of the most reliable box office stars over decades, a legendary ladies man in his younger days, and a staunch conservative throughout his life. There's also the already-infamous trailer for the forthcoming James Stewart biopic. Wow, does it look bad! Listen below and subscribe here. Be sure to give us a follow on Bluesky at @tfsbside.bsky.social. Enjoy!
On day 3 of the Winter Solstice observation, we talk about the importance of nutrition when embarking on a mission of improving your strength and health.Train Like There's No Tomorrow by Bill Hinbern.Today, I read a section of a book called "Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy", written by Brother Robert Hewitt Brown in 1882. This Brother clearly influenced Brother I. Edward Clark in his "Royal Secret," which was published in 1923. I read the section called "The Circle Embordered by Two Parallel Lines" found on page 129.Finally, I read what AI has to say about the spiritual significance of the Holy Saint John the Evangelist. Wouldn't it be great to receive this type of information within the lodge walls that you have joined?
Day two of the Winter Solstice, December 22nd, 2026, is upon us, and I read a piece written by Brother I Edward Clark. Brother Clark became a Mason way back in 1887 in Alpena, Michigan, in Hopper Lodge No. 386.The book is over 150 pages long and even shows astrological calendars for 1924 to 1932. There is a lot of similar content found in Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy, which was written by Brother Hewitt Brown, whose book came out in 1882. I read the section titles, "Masonic Festivals of the Holy Sts. John", found on page 87.Keep exercising your bodyKeep exercising your mindEat good foodBe with the ones you loveAnd work hard

If you haven't started some kind of exercise routine and your excuse is that you have no equipment, here is an article from the dinosaur trainer himself, Brooks Kubik, called "Try this no gym workout."Next, I get into the topic of the winter solstice and its deep connection to Freemasonry. In an article from a small book called "3-5-7 Minute Talks on Freemasonry by Elbert Bede", called "The Saints John" found on page 40.The beauty of this short talk is that it's about 5 minutes. But don't be fooled by its brief length; it's packed with some tantalizing ideas and observations.

JOHN 12:1-13 - WALKING WITH JESUS - BRIAN SUMNER - 2025JOHN 12:1 "Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. 2 There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.4 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.7 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. 8 For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”The Plot to Kill Lazarus9 Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. The Triumphal Entry12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:“Hosanna!‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!'The King of Israel!”To support this channel and partner with Brian in Ministryhttps://www.briansumner.net/support/For more on Brianhttp://www.briansumner.nethttps://www.instagram.com/BRIANSUMNER/https://www.facebook.com/BRIANSUMNEROFFICIALTo listen to Brians Podcast, click below.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Purchase Brians Marriage book at https://www.amazon.com/Never-Fails-Da...Brian is a full time "Urban Missionary" both locally and internationally with a focus on MISSIONS - MARRIAGES - MINISTRY. On episode 1 of Doing Well with Diabetes Season 2 Rob opens with a global nutritionist panel featuring three voices from three continents—Ravi Subramanian (India/Australia), Sally Anne Shirto (Zimbabwe/South Africa), and Marina Cavalin (Brazil). Each shares how diabetes shaped their lives, their careers, and the way they support others in their communities.
The classic summer festival is the latest loser in the cost of living crisis, with another iconic event announcing it's downfall today. Splore is part of a growing list of struggling festivals with big names like WOMAD and One Love also on pause. But with many young people still crying out for a summer experience, some smaller events are hoping they'll pick up punters let down by the big festivals. Evie Richardson reports.

“If you have opportunities to have them take over the work, you can engage them in a way with chaos circles. I love doing chaos circles when they're teaching themselves the music. Sometimes you see students who are usually very shy really step up to the challenge of becoming leaders, You get to see students in a way that they don't always present themselves if you can get them moving around and engaging the brain that way.”Dr. Jenny Bent is Professor of Music and Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Sonoma State University. With degrees from Boston University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Bent's expertise spans voice performance, choral conducting, and choral literature. Described by the San Francisco Classical Voice as “superb” with “excellent diction and well-controlled dynamics,” Dr. Bent's choirs have earned unanimous superior ratings and command performances at festivals throughout California and have performed under her baton at such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York City and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Her ensemble SonoVoce was recently honored to perform at the CA All-State Music Educators Conference (CASMEC).Recognized for her achievements as a choral educator, Dr. Bent received the 2019 CMEA Bay Section Outstanding Choral Educator Award and the 2023 CMEA Pearson/Scott Foresman/Silver Burdett Choral Educator Award. She brings over a decade of high school teaching experience, notably at the Marin School of the Arts.Beyond her academic work, Dr. Bent contributes to the choral music community as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and conference presenter for organizations including CMEA, ACDA, and Golden State. From 2016-2023, she served on the board of the California Choral Directors Association (CCDA), and she currently holds the positions of Repertoire & Resources Collegiate Choirs Coordinator for National ACDA and Western Region Representative for the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO). From 2007-2014, Dr. Bent shared her passion for choral music as a host of "The Choir Loft" on KRCB-FM. She is also a proud (and semi-obnoxious) baseball mom whose favorite moments are watching her two sons do what they love.To get in touch with Jenny, you can email her at bentje@sonoma.edu or find her on Facebook (@jenny.bent.5)Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson
Splore's announced it'll come to an end next year after hopes of a Government lifeline fell through. Next year's instalment of the annual boutique music and arts festival at Auckland's Tapapakanga Regional Park will be the last due to low ticket sales in recent years. Long-time owner John Minty says they weren't considered for the Government's $70 million Major Events Fund. He told Heather du Plessis-Allan that while ending the festival is potentially premature, the writing is on the wall. Minty says he could hang on for another year and hope things will get better, but from a financial point of view, he can't take that risk again. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we celebrate filmmaker James L. Brooks! His new movie Ella McKay is in theaters now! Our returning guest is very good friend Adam Drosin, and together we are The Brooks Brothers. Our B-Sides today are I'll Do Anything (musical cut included), Spanglish, and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. We discuss Brooks' impossibly successful career as a producer of both film and television, his keen eye for talent (his support of superb filmmaker Kelly Fremon Craig), and, of course, his reckoning with failure. There's also the recipe for that sandwich in Spanglish, Julia Roberts' feelings about Nick Nolte on the set of I Love Trouble (which came out the same year as I'll Do Anything, a rough year for Nolte professionally), and that Gracie Films fanfare. We also give The Critic some deserved love. We ponder the editing choices in Brooks' 2010 debacle How Do You Know and celebrate his acting in the masterpiece Modern Romance (directed by Albert Brooks!). Cinematographer John Seale also said in an interview that the movie he shot that he used the most film on was Spanglish!
