There's something I've been noticing for a while now…A lot of people are inspired by Heathenry. They feel connected to it. They resonate with it deeply. But very few people are actually disciplined in it.And that's not an insult... it's an observation.Because somewhere along the way, modern Heathenry became a space where inspiration is abundant… but structure is optional. And today I want to talk about what I see as a growing issue: the discipline gap in modern Heathenry.Early access granted to Jarl tier patrons and above.Support Midgard Musings By Clicking Here: https://linktr.ee/MidgardMusingsClick here to visit Fjallvaettir Workshop: https://fjallvaettir.com/Donate to my mother's-in-law GoFundMe for medical equipment upgrades: https://gofund.me/43c134d0Pick up your copy of my book "The Saga Of The Heron That Flies To Hel" on Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or a paperback copy on Lulu.Pre-order my new music album "Till The Final Twilight Dies" here.

When I wrote my 2021 book, Modern British Beer, I made the very intentional decision to put Fyne Ales irreplaceable Blonde Ale, Jarl, right at the beginning. For me, it's a beer that merges two schools of thought: that it is a modern beer, hopped with Citra imported from the Pacific Northwest, showcasing a bold, citrus fruit character, but one that is also a 3.8% cask beer, and at the same time feels resolutely anchored to British brewing tradition. Jarl, though, is not simply a modern British beer—it is a modern Scottish beer. Honestly, there is perhaps no beer experience that is resolutely more Scottish than to enjoy a pint at its source in Glen Fyne. That was the inspiration for this particular discussion—an effort to take a closer look at what's happening in the contemporary world of Scottish brewing. FyneFest, conveniently, provided the perfect place to chew on this topic and indeed it features Fyne Ales' very own head brewer Sam Shrimpton. Also on the panel are two owners/brewers at two of Scotland's youngest breweries: Lucy Stevens of Closet Brewing in Edinburgh, and Harry Weskin of Dookit Brewing in Glasgow.Listening to this episode, you'll quickly realise that no one on the panel claims immediate Scottish heritage (although Harry is pretty damn close.) However, they are, each in their own way, vital to the local, independent beer community. It's great to find out that the spirit that bound businesses together during the last resurgence of small breweries still exists today—in fact I'd argue it probably wouldn't exist without it.Tune in to hear two of the best young Scottish breweries talk about what they do, while perhaps one of the finest contemporary breweries to exist north of the border provides balance and context to this conversation. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Get ‘Er Brewed. One of the best things about making a yearly trip to Fyne Ales for FyneFest is that I get to check in on the brewery's Origins side project. It's the vehicle for its wild beers, typically produced using mixed or spontaneously fermented and then barrel-matured beer, and often showing locally grown fruit, or forage herbs. These beers are a long way from cherished Fyne Ale classics like Jarl or Highlander, but they arguably show an even greater ‘sense of place' than the cask beers that put this particular brewery on the map.For the past couple of years the project has been under the stewardship of Dan Wye, an experienced brewer who now lives next door to the brewery in Glen Fyne. When he took the project on he was given carte blanche to make Origins his own, which he did initially by gutting and cleaning the small brewery he uses to produce wort, and even getting rid of a few barrels he felt didn't meet his standards. Any fermentation project such as this needs time, and now we're at the point where Dan has his feet under the table, and Origins is beginning to produce some incredibly special beers. Among these are what Dan likes to refer to as ‘Chimeras'. Named for the mythical beast from the Greek classics, with the body and head of a lion, the head of a goat and a snake for a tail, Dan's Chimera's are far less threatening. Instead he uses the term to describe hybrid beers that are designed to ape beverages like wine or cider, but don't feature any of the ingredients that would be traditionally used to make such drinks. The results are pretty magical, with beers such as Smudan employing Nelson Sauvin hops before being further aged on gooseberries, elderflower, limes, sunflowers, marigolds and borage to imitate both the mouthfeel and flavour of cold climate Sauvignon Blanc. It's a seriously impressive beer, but don't take my word for it. The beer is carried by local restaurant, Inver, which presently holds a Michelin green star. If you recognise Dan's name, it's because he featured on a Pellicle podcast recorded at FyneFest in 2024. On this occasion Dan spoke alongside The Kernel's Evin O'Riordain, Mark Tranter of Burning Sky, and Will Harris of Balance Brewing in Manchester. This year, we figured seeing as he'd been super busy releasing lots of beers, and the fact we're literally on his doorstep, it might be nice to have a one to one conversation about what he's been up to.Speaking of which, keep your eyes out for a forthcoming Origins, Pellicle collab in the not too distant future. I'll be heading to Fyne Ales for non-FyneFest related reasons for the first time ever to help make a foraged beer that helps explore a notion I'm rather cynical about… Terroir.
Foundations of Amateur Radio Around the world are thousands of associations, groups of people, clubs if you like, that represent radio amateurs. Some of those associations are anointed with a special status, that of "member society" or "peak body", which allows them to represent their country with their own governments and on the international stage to the ITU, the International Telecommunications Union, through a global organisation, the IARU, the International Amateur Radio Union. Some of these are known across our whole community, the ARRL in the USA, the RSGB in the UK, and the WIA in Australia. Some much less so, the CRAC, the Chinese Radio Amateurs Club, or the ARSI, the Amateur Radio Society of India, for example. In an attempt to get a deeper understanding of what distinguishes these organisations, I visited a dozen member society websites. Cultural sensibilities and aesthetics aside, the variety and sense of priority is both pleasing and astounding. Starting close to home, the WIA, the Wireless Institute of Australia, shows news as the most important and the top story is a radio contact between the International Space Station and a school, held about two weeks ago. The ERAU, the Estonian Radio Amateurs Association, features an article about the 2025 General Meeting outlining who was there, what was discussed and thanking the participants for their contributions. When I visited, the ARRL, the American Radio Relay League, top news item, was the renewed defence of the 902-928 MHz Amateur Radio Band, from a few days ago. The most important issue for the ARRL is that you read the latest edition of QST magazine, but only if you're a member. The RSGB, the Radio Society of Great Britain, has an odd landing page that links to the main site, which features much of the same content. The latest news is "Mental Health Awareness Week" and encourages us to celebrate kindness in our community. The DARC, the German Amateur Radio Club, has a page full of announcements and the top one was an article about current solar activity including a coronal hole and various solar flares. The ERASD, the Egyptian Radio Amateurs Society for Development, uses qsl.net as its main website. It features many images with text, presumably in Arabic, that unfortunately I was not able to translate. Curiously the landing page features some English text that welcomes all interested to join. I confess that I love the juxtaposition between a Yaesu FT-2000 transceiver and the images of Tutankhamun and the pyramids. The RAC, the Radio Amateurs of Canada, use their homepage to promote its purpose, and features many pictures of their bi-monthly magazine, which you can only read if you're a member, which is where many of the homepage links seem to go. The RCA, the Radio Club of Argentina, is promoting the 2024-2025 Railway Marathon, including links to descriptions of what constitutes a Railway Activation, how to reserve your station, and upcoming and past activations. There's also a reminder to renew your license. The ARSI, the Amateur Radio Society of India, has a very sparse landing page showing their mission and not much else. Clicking around gives you lots of information about the history, activities, awards and the like. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find out how to become licensed in India. There's hardly any images. In contrast, the URA, the Union of Radio Amateurs of Andorra, lands you on a page with contact details and not much else. Clicking through the site gives you lots of pictures of happy people and maps, lots of maps. The KARL, the Korean Amateur Radio League, features an announcement with a link to the 24th Amateur Radio Direction Finding, from a week ago, but it requires a login to actually read it. The JARL, the Japan Amateur Radio League, features an announcement to a form you can complete to join the "List of stations from which you do not wish to receive QSL cards." The NZART, the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters, features a big button to latest news and clicking on it shows the "Jock White Field Day", which was held several months ago. I wasn't able to see the CRAC, the Chinese Radio Amateurs Club, since the page didn't load for me. The "Wayback machine", also known as archive.org, from a capture a few days ago, showed a news item announcing the intent to organise the 1st Class C Amateur Radio Technical "something", I say "something" because I cannot actually load the article and see what it has to say. The event was scheduled for a month ago, the announcement was from several months ago. Content aside, finding sites was interesting too, mind you, there's plenty of member associations that don't have any web presence at all. Is that by choice, or necessity? The IARU list of member societies conflicts with the list of national organisations shown on Wikipedia. The IARU has about 160 entries, I say about, since the list isn't really formatted as much as it's congealed. Let's just say, perhaps a table for tabular data might be a novel approach. Wikipedia is slightly better formatted, it lists 93 national organisations. As it happens, both include a link to the national organisation for China, which is either the Chinese Radio Sports Association, with apparently two different acronyms, either CRSAOA, or CRSA, or if you believe the IARU as a source, it's the one I mentioned earlier, the CRAC. I don't know which one is right, but at least we can assume that the IARU page was updated formally, rather than edited by someone on the internet. Regardless of which one is the "real" Chinese national amateur radio organisation, none of the websites loaded for me. Let's move on. It's interesting that several non-English sites like Korea, Japan and Germany feature a button that allows their site to be translated into English. What's even more interesting is that the English version of the site is not in any way the same content. In many cases it appears to be information relevant to English visitors rather than a translation. One notable exception is Estonia, which allows a visitor to read their site in Estonian or English right out of the box. Unsurprisingly, the ARRL website has no buttons for Spanish, even though that represents about 13 percent of the USA population, let alone any other language. I'd encourage you to visit a few and see what you can learn about the other members of our community around the world. My visits leave me with questions. What do these organisations stand for? What do they do? Are they there for amateurs, for aspirant members, the general public, for regulators, for their members, for fund raising and advertising, or international visitors and tourism? It seems to me that looking at just a few of these organisations reveals a great many things about how they understand their own role and how they deliver service and just how much money they have to play with to make that happen. I'll leave you to ponder how effective they might be and what your role is in that endeavour. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
Gestur vikunnar er Gunnar Jarl Jónsson – sannkallaður þúsundþjalasmiður!Gunnar spilaði í næstefstu deild en áttaði sig snemma á því að hann átti bjartari framtíð sem dómari. Gunnar hefur þjálfað fótbolta, stofnað útvarpsþátt á Fotbolti.net fyrir löngu síðan, starfað sem kennari, verið lögga, alið upp fimm börn og – að ógleymdu – gert sjónvarpsþáttinn Atvinnumennirnir okkar sem lokaverkefni í Kennaraháskólanum. Three games. Different mechanisms. One theme. Which one is the best?!?! Who knows but we talk about which one we like the best and our answers differ. Cause you know opinions are like yada yada yada, they all stink. During 878 Vikings, Enrique and Bubba took on me and Jerry. Bubba plotted. Enrique nervously gnawed his neglected, non nourishing, nugget tainted nails. They won. How? Why? These questions and more go unanswered in this weeks podcast where among other things Jerry also confuses Michael Douglass with his father Kirk in the Vikings movie creating another Rice a Roni like disaster.
Although it's still a few months away I'm already getting excited about this year's FyneFest. It's one of the most important dates in my calendar, not just because we head up there to host our Meet the Brewer panel discussions, but because it's simply one of the best beer-focussed events that the UK has to offer. While I tend to get misty-eyed over glorious pints of Jarl from the source, I also recognise it as a chance to try some truly special beers that I don't normally get to enjoy. The Origins Bar, where our talks take place, is a great example of this. Here you'll find plenty of funky wild beers and mixed ferments from several breweries including Fyne's own Origins project, plus wild-fermented ciders from producers such as Ross-on-Wye. For this discussion we decided to focus on the biggest beers pouring at the festival: stouts, barleywines, strong saisons and biere de garde—the kind of beers a situation like FyneFest is the perfect place to treat yourself too. On the panel I'm joined by Gareth Young from Glasgow's Epochal Barrel Fermented Ales, Lally Morrison from Polly's Brew Co in Mold, North Wales, and Sean Knight from Siren Craft Brew in Berkshire. Each brewer brought something truly special for us to taste, in addition to their wealth of knowledge and experience in producing these kinds of beers. Tune in for a little bit of ‘how' but plenty more ‘why' and, indeed, why we can expect lots more big beers from these breweries in the future. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. If you're enjoying this podcast, or the weekly articles we publish, please consider taking out a monthly subscription for less than the price of a pint a month.

Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
This week on the Hop Forward Podcast, we're diving into one of the most fascinating corners of brewing: blending and wild beers with Dan Wye who oversees Origins, the wild and spontaneous fermentation arm of Fyne Ales. From wild yeast and spontaneous fermentation to barrels, foraging, and time-honoured techniques, this episode is all about the magic that happens when nature takes the lead in beer making. While Fyne Ales is widely known for its flagship pale ale, Jarl, the brewery has been pushing boundaries since launching its wild beer programme in 2017, drawing inspiration from the rugged Scottish Highlands that surround their farm brewery. From tart, funky, and fruity flavours to complex, farmyard-esque depth, Origins beers are a true reflection of place, season, and time. In this episode, we discuss:
First up, thank you everyone who entered our Portland Calling giveaway brought to us by Fab Foundry. On this, the secondest episode of season 2 of the Attack Action Podcast, the Battle Bros talk about the recent B&R announcement and ask the hard hitting questions of "What did it do? Why did it do? and Did it do?" We keep the discussion rolling with our new ice age homie Jarl Vatreadeez and his extremely whelming deck list. Did you know they just "make up" the rarity of these cards? It's only a Legendary because they SAY it is! Or if it says Legendary but maybe not in the place you are thinking. Lastly, Taylor discusses his campaign to raise awareness about his Arakni tattoo and how if we don't get a spoiler from an all Arakni and assassin set we can't be held accountable for what we do. But seriously, the Xunted is on its way and we're ready to let the chaos in. As usual we would like to say a big thank you to all of our listeners. Thank you for listening. Thank you for watching. Thank you for shouting THE ATTACK ACTION PODCAST wherever you are. Your support is so important and meaningful to us. We have to say that this may be the greatest 100th episode of The Attack Action Podcast EVER! There won't be another like it. As Season 1 of the show ends, as we celebrate 5 years of the game Flesh and Blood, and as we mark our 4th year of the show, the Battle Bros reminisce on some of their favorite things about FAB. We also talk about the stealth release of a NEW Ice and Earth Guardian, the mighty JARL! Will it be the thing that breaks Blake? Signs point to a strong maybe. We want to give the BIGGEST shoutout to Hayley Neighbors for illustrating the amazing Attack Action Hero Podcast piece for us. We'll be printing this on some merch in the near future but wanted to commemorate this momentous occasion with a one of kind piece of art from a one of kind artist.
