Rishi Sunak's government has decided to block legislation to simplify gender recognition passed by the Scottish Parliament using a mechanism that's being described as the “nuclear option”. The decision has precipitated a constitutional crisis, with Nicola Sturgeon calling the decision a “full-frontal attack” on devolution.Anoosh Chakelian, Freddie Hayward and Rachel Wearmouth discuss how a debate over policy has turned into one over Scotland's power to govern itself. The team also covers claims that the government is trying to inflame tensions as part of a culture war and exploit divisions within the Labour Party over the bill. Then in You Ask Us a listener asks how the stalemate at Stormont, the Northern Irish Assembly, which has been without a government since February 2022, will end.If you have a question for You Ask Us, go to newstatesman.com/youaskus Podcast listeners can subscribe to the New Statesman for just £1 a week for 12 weeks using our special offer. What does the Northern Ireland Protocol and the threat of the UK triggering Article 16 mean for Northern Ireland? The United Kingdom is threatening to use Article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which suspends the agreement either in part or as a whole, amid tough talks with Brussels. I wanted to understand what this meant for the different communities affected by it. To find out, I interviewed Matthew O'Toole, Member of the Northern Irish Assembly for South Belfast, who is the Social Democratic and Labour Party's Spokesperson on the Economy and Brexit for this week's #BritainDebrief for the Atlantic Council. What does the protocol mean to the communities in Northern Ireland? How is the UK government impacting the region? What can be done to help moderate unionists support the continuation of the protocol?"

Rachel Weisz seems to have had constant work in the film industry since the early nineties. She's been in all kind of films: historical, action, science fiction, serious, art-house. Now she's diving into the world of superheroes with the new Marvel film, 'Black Widow'. Anita speaks to her about her latest role. The nation is transfixed - after many years of hurt could England be on the road to winning a major trophy? Football journalist Flo Lloyd-Hughes joins Anita. Sri Lankan author Kanya d'Almeida has been named the Commonwealth Short Story Prize Winner of 2021. Her winning piece, "I Cleaned The-" features two women who share a room in a refuge run by nuns, for people who have nowhere else to go. Kanya talks to Anita about her winning story, motherhood, mental health and paying for childcare in Sri Lanka. Northern Ireland politics is stuck. Continued disagreements between the power-sharing parties have led to stagnation in the Northern Irish Assembly, leaving lots of services in the lurch, including access to abortion for Northern Irish women. Now a charity, which is the first port of call for those who want an early medical abortion, says if they don't get funding they'll have to stop. Emily Rapp Black felt an instant connection with the artist Frida Kahlo after seeing her famous painting 'The Two Fridas'. At the age of four, Emily's left leg was amputated due to a congenital birth defect. In her new book ‘Frida Kahlo And My Left Leg', she explores the legacy, life and art of Frida Kahlo which helped her to make sense of her own life and body. Emily writes about the trauma of her son's death and the current discourse and attitudes around disability. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Frankie Tobi

This week's podcast sees the guys look at Theresa May's speech on Brexit. Did it move the dial enough to provide a breakthrough in negotiations? In the first half they also review the legal text of phase one of the negotiations, focusing in on the border and the UK and Brussels reaction to it. The interview this week is with Ursula Ní Shabhaois, an Irish language activist. We hear why the Irish Language Act is holding up the restoration of the Northern Irish Assembly, whether a united Ireland is now on the agenda since Brexit, and whether or not the Common Travel Area will actually be retained post Brexit. See an annotated version of Theresa May's speech in the Financial Times here: https://ig.ft.com/may-brexit-speech-annotated/ And a draft of the EU legal text that we discussed in phase one here: http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-1243_en.htm
