In today's Workday Playdate Snack, we're sending a leadership love letter to the quiet ones—the deep thinkers, the spreadsheet whisperers, the back-row observers who see everything. Because if you've ever left a meeting thinking, “Why didn't they speak up?” or “I wish I'd said that…”—this snack's for you. The Problem: Okay, picture this: You're in a team meeting. The extroverts are riffing, the whiteboard is filling up, and you notice someone hasn't said a word. You know they've got gold in their head, but they haven't chimed in. Or maybe... that person is you. Too many workplaces reward the loudest voice in the room. But when we only value volume, we silence vision. And let's be real—your quiet teammates? They're not zoned out. They're tuned in. The Improv Hack to Try: The Character Swap Hack What can you do to make space for that quiet brilliance? Here's a leadership tweak I've never shared before—and it's straight from the improv stage. Before your next meeting, mentally pick a quieter teammate. (No need to tell them—it's your secret leadership lab.) Then ask: How would they run this meeting? What would they focus on? How would they pace it? Now the fun part: Kick off the meeting as if you were them. Use their tone, their cadence, their intentionality. In improv, we step into other characters to explore new perspectives. And when you do this in leadership? You build empathy, highlight hidden genius, and create meetings that feel less like a race—and more like a rhythm. Bonus: You might just change your whole team vibe for the better. Coming Up Wednesday: Loved this Snack? In this episode of Workday Playdate, Erin welcomes keynote speaker, facilitator, and introverted powerhouse Cristy Von to the mic for a conversation that redefines what it means to lead from a place of quiet strength. Together, they dig into the surprising overlap between improv and introversion, showing how safe spaces, self-awareness, and a little bit of “yes, and” can transform leadership from the inside out. Cristy shares her journey from mistaking herself for an extrovert to fully embracing her introverted identity—and how that shift changed the way she leads, connects, and recharges. This episode is a powerful reminder that leadership doesn't require being the loudest in the room. Sometimes, it starts with simply knowing your limits and honoring them. Whether you're leading workshops, giving keynotes, or just trying to survive your next Zoom call, this one's for anyone who's ever wondered if quiet can still be commanding. (Spoiler alert: it absolutely can.) Inside This Episode: Why Cristy used to think she was an extrovert—and what changed How improv became a launchpad for her confidence The importance of creating safe, inclusive workshop spaces What keynote speaking taught Cristy about energy management The link between vulnerability and powerful facilitation Why collaboration between introverts and extroverts matters more than ever The mindset shift that helped Cristy find joy (and her voice) at work Who This Episode Is For: This episode is for the introverts in leadership roles, the workshop facilitators who crave real connection, and the quiet professionals looking to own their power without pretending to be someone they're not. If you're a recovering over-functioner who wants to lead with authenticity, boundaries, and a sense of play—pull up a chair. Today, we're talking about awe and wonder and all the incredible benefits that these simple and accessible emotions can have in terms of learning and child development. And I have the perfect guest here to talk about it — Deborah Farmer Kris, a child development expert, longtime educator, and author of the wonderful new book Raising Awe-Seekers: How the Science of Wonder Helps Our Kids Thrive. In this conversation, we talk about how and why awe is such a powerful tool for emotional regulation, learning, and resilience for our kids. Deborah shares some of the neuroscience behind wonder and walks us through how simple moments of awe, like listening to music, walking outside, or witnessing a small act of kindness, can lower stress, spark curiosity, and build deeper connections for our kids. She also offered strategies for cultivating awe with your child, even during the most challenging seasons of parenting. This episode is a beautiful reminder that we don't have to add one more thing to our to-do lists to make a meaningful shift. Sometimes, it's about slowing down, noticing what's already here, and inviting our kids into that sense of wonder with us. And I think what I love about this so much is that awe is something that's available to all of us, and experiencing it, even for little moments, not only feels wonderful (pun intended), but it has very real, positive benefits. About Deborah Deborah Farmer Kris is a child development expert and the author of "Raising Awe-Seekers: How the Science of Wonder Helps Our Kids Thrive,” the I See You board book series, and the All the Time picture book series. Her bylines include CNN, PBS KIDS, NPR's Mindshift, The Washington Post, the Boston Globe Magazine, and Oprah Daily. Deborah is currently an expert advisor for the PBS KIDS show, “Carl the Collector,” and spent 20+ years as a K-12 educator. Mostly, she loves sharing nuggets of practical wisdom that can make the parenting journey a little easier. You'll learn: How the powerful emotion of awe builds resilience and supports well-being Why curiosity and wonder spark internal motivation and deeper learning How to tap into nature, art, music, and kindness as everyday sources of awe for children Why experiencing awe can lower stress, improve memory, and support emotional regulation How parents can nurture awe by modeling curiosity and slowing down with their kids Ideas for creating small, shared moments of wonder strengthen connection and support family wellness Resources: Deborah Farmer Kris' website Parenthood 365 Raising Awe-Seekers: How the Science of Wonder Helps Our Kids Thrive by Deborah Farmer Kris Raising Awe-Seekers Podcast Deborah on Instagram Deborah on LinkedIn You Wonder All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kris You Are Growing All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kris I Love You All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kirs You Have Feelings All the Time by Deborah Farmer Kris Dr. Dacher Kelter Dr. Michele Borba Mindshift (KQED / PBS) Pub Choir Robert Waldinger Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness by Jamil Zaki The Happiness Study at Harvard Challenge Success I Love N.Y.E. In today's Workday Playdate Snack, we're giving the quiet leaders in the room a standing ovation—and a strategy. Because if you've ever felt invisible in loud leadership spaces, this one's for you. The Problem: Corporate culture often rewards the boldest brainstormer, the fastest talker, the loudest voice. But what if you're the deep thinker, the one who shines in 1:1s, and recharges solo? Too often, introverted leaders are overlooked—not because they lack ideas, but because they don't shout them. That's not a flaw. That's a missed opportunity…for everyone else. The Improv Hack to Try: “The Power Pause” Next time you're in a meeting and have something to say—don't jump in fast to prove you're ready. Wait. Take a beat. Let the room settle. Then drop your insight with intention. That pause? It signals thoughtfulness, confidence, and leadership—without you ever raising your voice. In improv, silence isn't awkward—it's powerful. Use it to own your space and lead, your way. Want More Like This? In today's Workday Playdate Snack, we're tackling the kind of tired a nap can't fix. Because if your soul is sighing—not just your body—this one's for you. The Problem: You're not just exhausted from meetings, deadlines, and life logistics. You're tired because you're performing all day and rarely just being. You're juggling ten roles at once—boss, parent, mentor, inbox warrior—but none of them feel like the full, real you. That's not burnout. That's identity fatigue. The Improv Hack to Try: “Play the Wrong Character on Purpose” Today, in just one meeting, switch it up: Usually the fixer? Be the one who asks all the questions. Constantly over-prepared? Wing it (just a little). The quiet one? Try on bold, bubbly energy—just for fun. This isn't about being fake. In today's Workday Playdate snack, we're talking about how to stop hating your job—and maybe even enjoy the humans you work with. The Problem: If you're dreading Slack pings, counting down to Friday, or secretly fantasizing about moving to a remote island with zero meetings… it might not just be burnout. It might be a connection problem. We spend 90,000 hours of our lives at work—if we're not feeling seen or having any fun, that's a soul issue, not a schedule issue. The Improv Hack to try at your next meeting: “Role Call Remix.” Before your next meeting, toss out one unexpected, totally non-work prompt—but assign everyone a role to answer in. Like: “Answer as if you're a pirate who just got promoted.” “Respond like your teenage self.” “Pretend you're your favorite snack food come to life.” It's weird. It's wonderful. And it gets people out of robot mode and into real connection—fast. That's the snack. Show up human. Get a little weird. And remember—work gets way better when we stop pretending and start playing. Journal Prompts: Where could I bring a little more humanity into my next meeting? Who on my team might be craving real connection? What part of my personality doesn't usually show up at work—but could? Are you exhausted? Do you find yourself fatigued even after a good night's sleep? Are you twisting yourself into knots trying to stay on top of and keep up with everything? If so, you might be living beyond human pace and human scale. For hundreds of thousands of years our species lived as hunter-gatherers, living a human-paced life. Today, we live at break-neck speed, and in a constant state of over-consumption of information. We are not wired for this incessant processing of content and stimulation. It's no wonder we're exhausted! In today's episode, we'll talk about how to slow down, how to mono-task, and how to reconnect with the simple joys of life at human pace. This is powerful magic! In today's Workday Playdate snack, we're talking about vulnerability at work and why speaking up might be the boldest move you make all week. The Problem: We're taught to keep it polished and professional. But when life—grief, burnout, infertility—shows up, we go quiet. That silence creates distance. Between teammates. Between leaders. Even within ourselves. The Improv Hack to try at your next meeting: “Before we dive in—quick vibe check. I'm feeling ___ today, and that's what I'm bringing into the room.” You start. Keep it honest. That one moment of realness makes it safer for others to show up, too. That's the snack. Lead with your whole self. Keep it honest, keep it human. More soon. Jay Fields is an author, somatic coach, and experiential educator. Jay joins the Workday Playdate to discuss the importance of setting boundaries, the emotional complexities of relationships, and how to navigate communication overload while maintaining empathy. Jay introduces the “Hey Wait” technique, a simple yet powerful tool for asserting yourself in conversations when you may be used to leaving yourself out. Jay also shares why we develop people pleasing patterns (hint: it has something to do with how we think about connection). Today, we're talking about why teams hesitate to speak up and how to change that. If you've ever felt like your voice doesn't matter in meetings, that stops now. The Problem – Why Teams Aren't Engaged: When a leader asks, “Any questions?” and no one speaks, it's not because there's nothing to say. It's because people don't feel safe to share. When voices stay silent, innovation stalls, ideas get repetitive, and a few people dominate conversations. The Solution – The Wrong Answers Only Challenge: At your next meeting, challenge yourself (or your team) to go first—but start with a deliberately wrong answer. Example: If someone asks, “How should we improve client engagement?” You say: “Let's start responding to emails in Morse code.” Or if your boss asks, “How do we cut costs?” You respond: “Sell our office chairs and replace them with bean bags.” Why? Removing the pressure to be right makes it easier to contribute. It also lightens the mood and gets people thinking more creatively. When you practice this exercise regularly, it will overflow into the moments when you're not practicing it—creating a culture that's not afraid to share, speak up, and contribute creative solutions. Journal Prompts to chew on: When have I held back from sharing an idea? Why? How can I bring more playfulness to work conversations? Has a wrong answer ever led me to a breakthrough? And if you're interested in taking one small action right now, you can check out our newest freebie, The 5-Minute Team Commitment Reset here. John Kenney's I See You've Called in Dead is about an obituary writer named Bud Stanely. One late night after a particularly bad date and too many glasses of Scotch, Bud drunkenly writes his own remembrance – and hits publish. The newspaper where he works wants to fire him, but can't legally terminate a dead person. But the error sets off a change in Bud's life as he begins to attend the funerals of strangers. In today's episode, Kenney joins NPR's Scott Simon for a conversation about the college journalism assignment that sparked the idea for the novel, the author's experience of male friendship, and a nugget of dark humor from Kenney's late brother. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Today, we're talking about something you can use anytime, anywhere: flipping fear into fuel. If you want to turn challenges into courageous choices, you're in the right place. The Problem: Why We Freeze at the Edge of Big Decisions Ever find yourself standing at a crossroads, knowing the bold choice is the right one, but feeling stuck? That's your brain clinging to predictability like a security blanket. It's not that you don't have what it takes—it's that uncertainty freaks your brain out. But here's the kicker: YOU are the flashlight in the unknown. You get to light the way. The Solution: The Inner DJ Remix Hack Time to shake things up with a little mental DJ-ing. Your brain loves to spin the same old fear-based tracks on repeat. Here's how you remix it: Next time your brain says, “This is too scary. I can't do this,” STOP. Out loud (or in your head if you're in public), say: “REMIX!” and swap the thought. Turn “I can't” into “I'm learning how.” Turn “This is too much” into “I can handle hard things.” Make it FUN. Be dramatic. Pretend you're a DJ scratching a record. Your brain thrives on novelty, and this playful shift rewires your fear response. Journal Prompts to chew on: What's the current fear-based ‘track' my brain keeps playing? What's my new ‘REMIX' thought? How can I physically embody this shift to make it stick? Today, we're talking about something anyone could use at any given time: a leadership sprucey spruce. If you want to turn team dreams into company wins, you're in the right place. The Problem: Why Teams Are Not Engaged Ever feel like your team is running on autopilot? Like they're doing just enough but not really bringing their A-game? It's not because they don't care—it's because they don't feel like their ideas matter. They're waiting for permission to be bold. And guess what? You can give it to them. The Solution: The Out-of-the-Box Improv Hack You Need In today's Snack, we're shaking things up with a little game called The Fortune Teller Brainstorm. Here's how it works: Have each team member write down a big, wild dream they have for the team—think moonshot ideas with no limits. Fold them up, toss them in a bowl, and randomly pull one out. As a group, pretend it's five years in the future and this dream has already happened. How did you get there? What steps did you take? Just like that, you've turned a dream into a game plan. Try this in your next meeting and watch how quickly your team starts thinking big. Journal Prompts to chew on: What's the wildest dream I have for my team's success? How can I create a fun way to encourage new ideas? Who on my team needs a confidence boost today, and how can I give it to them? Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! It's time for your quick bite of leadership wisdom—a little boost of inspiration, energy, and playfulness to brighten your workday. Today, we're talking about something we ALL have in common: mistakes. Yep, those cringe-worthy, face-palm moments that keep us up at night. But guess what? Your mistakes aren't just embarrassing bloopers; they're your greatest career growth hacks. So, what do we do? We improvise, using the The "Next Line, Please" Hack. What it is: In improv, when a scene stalls or someone blanks out, we use a simple trick: we ask for the next line. Instead of panicking, we literally turn to our scene partner and say, "Next line, please?" and they feed us something to work with. How to use it in real life: Ever been in a meeting where you completely blank on what to say? Or maybe you're giving a presentation and your brain just short-circuits mid-sentence? Instead of freezing or rambling, do this: Pause. (Silence feels longer to you than it does to them.) Take a breath. (Gives your brain time to reset.) Ask for the ‘next line.' This can be as simple as: "Can you repeat the question?" (Buys time and refocuses.) "Let me gather my thoughts for a second." (Gives permission to pause.) "That's a great point—can you expand on that while I process?" (Keeps the conversation flowing.) This breaks the pressure of perfection and allows you to regroup without the awkwardness. Try it today! When you get stuck, don't force it—just ask for the next line. If you're interested in taking one small action right now, you can check out our newest freebie, The 5-Minute Team Commitment Reset here. Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! It's time for your quick bite of leadership wisdom—a little boost of inspiration, energy, and playfulness to brighten your workday. Today, we're talking about the power of play. When was the last time you truly played pretend? Not just faking enthusiasm for Bob's homemade cookies at the office potluck—but really letting your imagination run wild like you did as a kid. That same playful energy can transform your team. Too many teams are stuck in “work mode” 24/7. They're afraid of looking silly, stressed, overwhelmed, and holding back ideas. The stats don't lie: Only 32% of employees are engaged at work. (Gallup) 76% of employees don't feel psychologically safe to take risks. (Harvard Business Review) Your team is playing it safe instead of playing to win. But today, we're changing that with a simple improv hack: The Superhero Power Exercise. How it works: At the start of your next meeting, tell your team: “Today, you're a superhero with a power that makes you unstoppable at work.” Give them 30 seconds to think of their superhero name and work superpower. Captain Collaboration—uniting teams in a single bound Deadline Destroyer—crushing timelines before they even start Go around the room (or Zoom) and have each person introduce themselves in character. Bonus points for striking a superhero pose. Why this works: Breaks the ice and makes people comfortable Taps into creativity and shifts thinking Instantly changes the energy in the room Try it out and watch your team loosen up and engage. If you liked this, don't miss our next full episode, where we'll dive into why leaders at LinkedIn, Amazon, and Uber Freight use improv for team growth. Journal Prompts: When was the last time I allowed myself to play at work? How can I bring more creativity to my team this week? What work superpower would I give myself, and how can I use it more often? Until next time, keep playing, keep leading, and remember—the world needs the special IT that only you can bring. Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! It's time for your quick bite of leadership wisdom—a little boost of inspiration, energy, and of course, playfulness to brighten your workday. Today, we're talking about one of the most underrated leadership tools: humor. That's right—if you want to build connection, trust, and motivation within your team, you don't need a corporate retreat or a 100-slide deck. Sometimes, all it takes is a well-placed joke, a moment of levity, or the courage to not take yourself too seriously. Want to add more fun to your leadership style? Try this improv-inspired game: The Mis-Translation Game Pick a ‘translator' and a ‘speaker.' The ‘speaker' delivers a serious workplace announcement—but in complete gibberish. Example: “Gloobity blop floo fandango periwinkle!” The ‘translator' must confidently ‘interpret' what was just said. Example: “Ah yes, that means today's meeting will be catered by an army of penguins!” Rotate roles and let the laughter flow. Why does this work? Because it helps teams embrace the unknown, think on their feet, and find joy in the unexpected. And a team that laughs together? That's a team that trusts each other. Take it further: Reflect on a leader who used humor to inspire you. What did they do? What's one way you can bring more humor into your leadership style this week? How can you create an environment where your team feels safe to have fun? And don't forget—next up, we're going even deeper with JaMarr Johnson, the "Entrepremedian" who helps leaders use humor to build stronger workplace cultures. You don't want to miss it! Journal Prompt: Who on your team might be feeling unheard? What's one small way you can make space for their voice this week? Write it down—and take action. It's time for your Workday Playdate snack—just a quick bite of leadership wisdom before we go deeper on Wednesday. Today, we're talking about empathy—the leadership skill that turns good teams into great ones. Want a quick and easy way to help your team feel heard? Try this improv-inspired exercise: “Last Word, First Word” One person starts with a simple sentence. Example: “Our team is growing fast.” The next person must start their sentence with the last word of the previous sentence. Example: “Fast changes require clear communication.” Keep going around, building off each other's words. Notice how this forces people to really listen and build on what's being said—just like in a strong, empathetic workplace. Why does this work? Because it shifts conversations from waiting to speak to actively responding. And that's where trust starts. Journal Prompt: Who on your team might be feeling unheard? What's one small way you can make space for their voice this week? Write it down—and take action. If you're interested in taking one small action right now, you can check out our newest freebie, The Empathy Cheat Sheet here.
