Our guest today is a maverick of music, an agent provocateur whose visually arresting image, razor sharp humour and mentally challenging music helped forge that most enduring of sub-cultures; 'Goth'. Back in the early 1980s when the post-punk counter culture embraced film noir and turned the technicolor of glam into a more sinister monochromatic look, festooned with spider webs, skulls and too much eye-liner Nik Fiend was one of the original bad-taste makers at London's The Batcave club. 'Alien Sex Fiend' along with 'The Specimen' and 'Sex Gang Children' made regular appearances at the infamous Batcave. Together they helped establish the look and feel of the early Goth scene in the south, where the likes of Nick Cave, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus, Foetus, Robert Smith and even a freshly crimped and spiked Elizabeth Hurley were all regular attendees. The world has of course never been the same, and while music and fashion constantly evolve there is alway the reverberation of the gothic asthetic. Mr & Mrs Fiend continue to create and celebrate chaos around the world, finding success on US college radio, getting 'big in Japan' and spreading their tendrils throughout continental Europe. Uncompromising, often hilarious, always a little bit shocking Alien Sex Fiend are a national treasure who have been hidden in the basement for far too long. Before we talk to Nik we do that thing we love to do, we talk about a completely different type of music! This month we are very pleased to speak to Alex Coles about his excellent book on Jazz Fusion. It is beautiful object and a fascinating discussion about how Jazz can be fused with all manner of musical styles and add to the overall effect. The discussion takes in Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, Charlie Mingus, Kendrick Lamar and Neneh Cherry. We also set aside a few minutes to discussing the giant hole in Deb's flat. Hosted on Acast. Will Wiesenfeld, also known as Baths, is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born, raised, and based in Los Angeles. His fourth full-length album Gut, an expression from the stomach, rather than the heart will be out February 21st via his label, Basement's Basement.  Will shares the idea behind making a relentless, unapologetic and at times embarrassing record and why it wasn't necessarily difficult for him.  We learn how Gut functions as an ode to his rock influences, why jealousy motivated him to learn how to play an instrument and he shares how his hate to love relationship with piano evolved as kid. Will tells us why the string section was the ultimate motivator in finishing Gut, we hear how layering plays a role in his production and we look into his recording process.  Joe and Will discuss their similar clothing style and we hear a couple new tunes from Gut. AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Jennifer Koziol, a board certified theriogenologist from Texas Tech University, to discuss the publication in The Bovine Practitioner on sample collection for Tritrichomonas foetus. This project was funded by the AABP Foundation Competitive Research Grant. The AABP Foundation funds clinical research for beef and dairy cattle projects that may not be eligible for funding elsewhere and provide evidenced based medicine for practicing veterinarians. These projects are funded entirely by donations and if you would like to support projects such as this, please go to this link to donate today.  This project evaluated whether the side of the chute and right or left handedness influenced the sensitivity of detecting Tritrichomonas foetus. We discuss the importance of this venereal pathogen in the beef industry and the challenges for controlling its spread. Koziol walks us through the appropriate way to collect these samples and the new methods of detection that increase the sensitivity of the test versus previous diagnostic testing methods. She discusses the objectives and designs of the study. The results of the study indicate that the side of the chute and collector's handedness do not influence the sensitivity of detecting the organism. This can have implications on ergonomics and long-term physical health of veterinarians. Physical health and injury prevention were identified as important aspects of retention of recent graduates in bovine practice, based on a study Koziol co-authored. These results can be utilized by cattle veterinarians performing this diagnostic test to allow them to appropriately implement control measures for their clients. Is a Foetus a Person in Imami Fiqh? by Dr Mohammad Rasekh

Al-Mahdi Institute Podcasts

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 20, 2023 19:46

Dr Mohammad Rasekh (Shahid Beheshti University and Institute of Ismaili Studies) Under Imami fiqh (Muslim jurisprudence), various rules are applicable to foetus. Among them, this research focuses on the rules on blood money (dīyya) and inheritance (irth), as applicable to foetus, in order to examine the underlying personhood picture of the entity. That is to say, a question may be raised on whether the said rules share similar understanding of foetus as person. In this regard, taking into account the relevant rulings on the two topics embedded in the major fiqhi (jurisprudential) corpuses authored by Imami jurisprudents, such as those compiled by Ṭūsī , Muḥaqqiq Ḥillī, Ibn ‘Idrīs, Khānsārī and Khu'ī, it can be said that the rules on blood money, to be paid as compensation for the harm inflicted on foetus, consider the entity as a person. The least reason is that, according to them, the money would be inherited by the heirs to the foetus, rather than by the mother alone. Heirs are certainly heirs to a person. In comparison, those rules on the right of a foetus to inheritance make it conditional on the foetus being born alive, even for one second. It means that when it comes to the issue of inheriting, foetus is not regarded as a person at any stage of pregnancy period. In other words, foetus does not turn into a person, i.e., an entity that bears rights and responsibilities, unless and until it is born alive. Therefore, the answer to the question stated in the title of this research is both in the affirmative and the negative. On the other hand, the said rules and rulings on the two status are undoubtedly reasoned for. However, they do not seem to embody a consistent personhood picture of foetus. Can the inconsistency be countered by the existing reasoning and rule inference method of the prevalent Imami jurisprudential tradition? If not, what can be offered as a way out of the conundrum?

Islamic Jurisprudence on the Beginning of Human Life and Its Legal Implications on Foetus and Mother by Mrs Hatice Kubra Memis

Mrs Hatice Kubra Memis (University of Exeter) The question of when human life begins is a multifaceted issue that extends beyond the realm of medicine. In Islamic Law, this topic is of particular importance, particularly in cases of induced miscarriage. Islamic legal rulings concerning the foetus can be categorized into two groups: those that relate directly to the foetus, such as nasab (lineage), diya (blood money), and inheritance, and those that relate to the foetus' influence on its mother's life, including her waiting period (ʿidda), manumission, fasting, maintenance, and punishment. This paper examines several of the rulings that have direct relevance to the foetus and its mother, including diya (blood money), kaffāra (expiation), ʿidda (waiting period), and umm walad (mother of the child). The way fuqaha (Muslim jurists) approach miscarriages vary depending on whether the foetus has a human appearance at the time of its demise or on the opinion of four trustworthy women who are experts in their field. To understand the criteria for determining when human life begins, this study focuses on the broader context of Islamic schools, such as Sunni and Shia, and particularly on the impact of the beginning of life on four issues: diya, kaffāra, completion of the ʿidda, and the status of umm walad. These issues are critical for establishing a discussion on matters that directly impact real-life situations such as abortion, stem cell and embryo research.

Guest artist SUSAN SCHUPPLI joins art critic and author ELIZABETH FULLERTON to discuss her art practice via 'The Second Body' 2017 by Daisy Hildyard, published by Fitzcarraldo Books. Listed by the 'White Review' on their Books of the Year 2018, the essay presents the dissolving boundaries between all life on earth, with an updated dualism between the animal bodies in which we eat, breathe, and sleep and the virtual bodies of our global connections and environmental impacts. Susan and Elizabeth discuss dissolving boundaries, plausible deniability, beached whales, deep time, gathering poems, chattering glaciers, foetus ownership, critical proximity, living on ice, images creating barriers, Princess Diana's wedding dress, bodies eating distance, and changing paradigms. Plus, they question where environmental knowledge resides and which modes of representation might inspire action.   SUSAN SCHUPPLI susanschuppli.com @susan_schuppli 'Cruel Radiance' Backlight Festival, Finland  - June 2023 Art & Industry Triennial, Dunkerque France - June 2023 'Re/Sisters', Barbican London 5 Oct 2023 - 14 Jan 2024 LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Spain    'Material Witness' 'Can the Sun Lie'  'Cold Rights' 'Freezing Deaths' 'Weaponising Water' 'Icebox Detentions' 'Listening to the Ice' 2023   EVENTS   'Earthrise' is a photograph of Earth and some of the Moon 's surface that was taken from lunar orbit by astronaut William Anders on 24 December 24 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission.   Ultrasound was first used for clinical purposes in mid 1950s but not used widely in British and American hospitals till 1970s for foetus imaging. Wesley Doyle in conversation with David Eastaugh http://jawbonepress.com/conform-to-deform/ Along with Factory, Mute, and Creation, Some Bizzare was the vanguard of outsider music in the 1980s. The label's debut release reads like a who's who of electronic music, featuring early tracks from Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Blancmange, and THE THE, while over the next decade its roster would include artists such as Marc Almond, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Foetus, Swans, Coil, and Psychic TV. For a time, Some Bizzare was the most exciting independent record label in the world, but the music is only half of the story. Self-styled label boss Stevo Pearce's unconventional dealings with the industry are legendary. Sometimes they were playful, other times less so; either way, he was a force to be reckoned with. His preternatural ability to spot talent meant his label was responsible for releasing some of the decade's most forward-thinking, transgressive, and influential music.

Last summer, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, reigniting a fifty-year abortion debate once thought settled in the Western world. Though disguised by coverage of judges and commentators alike, the crux of the debate remains deeply philosophical: what is the moral value of a foetus? Is it a human being? Is it a person? To answer these questions, Todd Horton, law graduate from Trinity College, will be interviewing Professor Jonathan Herring, a pre-eminent exponent of the ‘relational' conception of personhood, and author of the leading textbook on Medical Law.

This then raises the difficult question: what happens to the foetus? We also touch on the relevance of metaphysics to biology and to ethics. Over the weekend millions of women's worst fears were realised, when the US Supreme Court overturned the court case known as Roe V. Wade, which had since 1973 granted women in America a legal right to abortion. As soon as the majority of Supreme Court judges made their decision, a number of states immediately started making abortion illegal in all cases, even if the mother has been raped or the child was conceived through incest. So what happens now? The Quicky speaks to an expert in reproductive rights to find out how so many states have already managed to introduce laws making abortion illegal, and what could happen next in a country that appears from the outside to be imploding.
