In this episode of Bridging the Gap, Matt Reiner sits down with Paul Armson, a financial advisor who has transitioned his approach to focus on lifestyle financial planning. Initially drawn to the industry by the potential income from selling financial products, Paul had a major wake-up call after his mother's sudden death. This event prompted him to reevaluate his career priorities and redirect his strategy towards helping clients live their lives to the fullest in the present, rather than deferring enjoyment to the future. Paul now emphasizes the importance of understanding clients' current lifestyle and their deeper, more meaningful life goals.Paul advocates to move away from the traditional, product-centric approach typical in the financial services industry. He underscores the importance of advisors focusing on understanding the client's needs and guiding them towards a richer, more fulfilling life. Paul introduces the concept of lifestyle financial planning, which aims to help clients figure out "how much is enough" to live their desired life. By understanding and connecting with clients on a more personal level, advisors can provide a service that goes beyond simple financial advice, fostering trust and a more profound impact on the client's life.Matt and Paul discuss various tools and methodologies that can aid advisors in this client-centric approach, including surveys to gauge clients' financial confidence and specific tools Paul has developed to track clients' progress. They also touch on the challenges that come with changing clients' expectations from traditional financial conversations to more holistic life planning discussions. Paul encourages advisors to recognize the influence of the financial industry on their thinking and to prioritize the overall client experience over the narrow focus on financial products. This episode underscores the importance of advisors being life planners first, truly understanding their clients' stories, and helping them achieve their desired lifestyles.More Content For Financial Advisors and Wealth Management FirmsYouTubeTwitterLinkedIn

Summary Paul is the founder of Inspiring Advisers, a lifestyle financial planning training programme and Life Centred Planners, a fast-growing global community of advisers from around the world who believe that it is time to put the client and not their money at the centre of their plans. Paul is also the author of the brilliant book Enough?: How much money do you need for the rest of your life. A book that we give out to for free and has had such an impact on many of our clients.  Paul began life as a financial planner back in 1982 and in 1990 he was one of the very first to see the light and start the movement of what is now known as lifestyle financial planning, focusing on the human and not their money. As well as helping and inspiring many financial advisers across the globe, Pauls overarching mission is to educate and change the lives of people by showing them the REAL benefits of how lifestyle financial planning can help them live their best life. In this episode, Paul and I talk about his wake-up call, when his mother passed away suddenly, leading him to realize that life is not a rehearsal. He shifted his focus to lifestyle financial planning, putting life at the centre of financial plans. Paul emphasizes the importance of understanding how much is enough and helping clients live a great life now. He also discusses the three types of people when it comes to retirement planning: not enough, got too much, and just right. Paul discusses the importance of redefining retirement as financial independence and freedom ant that true financial independence means having the choice to work or start a business because you want to, not because you have to. Paul encourages everyone to pursue new opportunities and passions during this retirement with the idea of leaving behind memories and experiences, rather than just money. Takeaways Life is not a rehearsal, and it's important to live a great life now. Financial planning should revolve around a client's life and desired lifestyle, not just financial products. Understanding how much is enough is crucial for financial planning. Many people worry about money when they will be financially okay. The financial services industry often focuses on fear and insecurity, but real financial planning should provide peace of mind and freedom. Financial independence means having the freedom to choose whether to work or not. Redefine work and find purpose in retirement by pursuing new opportunities and passions. Focus on leaving memories and experiences, not just accumulating wealth. Craft a lifestyle financial planning message that emphasizes the connection between life and money. Hello and welcome to Episode 7 of Intelligent Adviser, the audio podcast for a new generation of financial professionals, brought to you by Regis Media. I’m Robin Powell. This time, I’m going to be speaking to Paul Armson. Based in the English Midlands, Paul is a highly experienced financial planner. He now runs Inspiring Advisers — an organisation which helps advisers to identify where they really add value. He has more than 500 advisers signed up. Most are in the UK, but they also come from Ireland, the Netherlands and other parts of continental Europe. He’s a great believer in what he calls life planning and financial planning. His view, is that it’s only when advisers have done those two things that they’ve earned the right to provide investment advice.

They specialise in multi-asset investing, bringing institutional investing techniques to ordinary people like you and me. 7IM put their name to my show and to my site because they believe in what I'm doing, trying to get decent, easy-to-understand financial information out to the world. I'm very grateful to them for their support. You can see what they're up to at 7im.co.uk Enough This episode is being released on Monday 8th May 2017 which is the start of Financial Planning Week here in the UK. This is a project designed to spread the word about professional financial planning and advisers up and down the country are putting on surgeries, delivering seminars, writing blogs, creating videos, and appearing on TV and radio to get the message out. This episode is my contribution to Financial Planning Week. Now my conversation with Paul is pretty wide-ranging, taking in the difference between financial advice and financial planning, the way he explains lifetime cashflow (which is super-useful), and the three different kinds of people he has seen throughout his career, and what each group needs to do.
