In this episode, Dr. Chris Motley lays out the facts about what we know, his best advice for avoiding contamination and your full treatment options from both modern and ancient science. In this episode you'll learn: Cyclospora is a protozoan parasite that can go dormant or activate depending on how strong your immune system is. The gross part: People infected with Cyclospora shed oocysts in their feces which can contaminate food or water.  Symptoms to look out for: watery diarrhea that won't go away (this is the big indicator), bone-deep fatigue you can't shake off, explosive bowel movements and loss of appetite. Prevention: Soak your produce thoroughly with an apple cider vinegar and baking soda wash, but most importantly...Cook your produce! Heat kills this parasite. Keep an eye on restaurant reports as much as possible. It's not always possible to know where your favorite restaurant sources its food, but be on the lookout for information about where they get their food and how careful they are with their ingredients. Steps to take if you are potentially infected: Ask to be tested for cyclospora specifically, by name, because it won't be included in routine tests. Treatment options:  1) The antibiotic - it's called TMP - SMX (Trimethoprim - sulfamethoxazole). Brand names are Bactrim or Septra. Thanks so much for joining us today. We've got a great guest for you, Sumee Seetharaman, who is the VP of AI/ML Practice in the Center of Excellence at TD. This is gonna be a great conversation about AI at work, something I think we're all experiencing, so we're really excited to have you. To kick it off, the use of AI in Canadian workspaces is surging. According to KPMG, about 51% of Canadian adults are now using generative AI at work. Has the technology become just so commonplace in the workplace that Canadians need to have AI skills before they enter the workforce? And if so, which skills do they need? Sumee:Yeah, it's a great question. Interestingly, we're at a point where the personal use of AI is far exceeding use at work, a March 2026 Angus Reid survey found that over 70% of Canadians surveyed had used AI in the previous three months for personal use. So odds are that most folks are actively using AI for their day-to-day already and have some of the basic AI skills required at work. Skills like knowing how to use and prompt a chatbot effectively, and I'm not talking about just a single Q&A, but really knowing how to converse with the model. Treating, the response to your initial question as just the starting point. Knowing how to ask follow-up questions and providing clear instructions to refine the response. So the fluency is in really knowing how to iterate and refine, building out the parts that are missing, and pruning out the parts that don't feel right? Most people are learning to do this instinctively as they're using ChatGPT and Gemini apps. Next, I want to say folks who are using AI regularly are also starting to develop a good sense of the strengths and the limitations of the technology, right? All of us have encountered that the model sometimes hallucinates, and so we know and we've learned that we cannot treat the output of the model as gospel. And so in a work setting, this is where domain expertise, not AI expertise, is actually more helpful because we need experts to validate and apply human judgment on the output of the model. And also if you're actively using AI and reading on AI, AI can be used in harmful ways, so most folks are starting to develop an appreciation for the guardrails that are needed and what does responsible use of AI look like. And are careful about what you put into public versions of these models. You're starting to build a good awareness of privacy safeguards and such. All that to say if you're familiar with using ChatGPT or Gemini for personal use- You should be able to fluently use most AI tools in the workplace. So at TD, over seventy percent of our colleagues our workforce has access to a GenAI capability, whether it's virtual assistants that we have developed in-house for our frontline colleagues in contact centers or wealth operations or branches, or Copilot capabilities we've enabled across the organization. GitHub Copilot for developers and Power BI Copilot and Office 365 Copilot. So chances are, if you're joining TD, you have access to these AI capabilities to, to really amplify your impact, and you probably are already quite fluent in how to use them. Brett:TD is obviously ahead of the curve on AI, and I'd be interested from a practical standpoint, what are some examples of jobs at TD that AI is already transforming? Sumee:Yeah. So we recently announced our first agentic AI use case to, to speed up the pre-adjudication process of mortgage and HELOC applications. So when an application is submitted, AI agents that we've deployed are actively scanning the documents, calculating client income, performing consent checks, looking for discrepancies, et cetera. After this sort of document review process is done, the agents then produce a memo with their findings and this goes off to the underwriters to review and make a decision on the application. And so if you look through that agentic AI activation, it's transformed the jobs of colleagues like our underwriters who are now working hand-in-hand with AI agents and making decisions on applications much faster. We've gotten the review process down to an average of three minutes from an average of fifteen hours. Effectively, the way they're operating has transformed day-to-day. If I look at the role of our back-office staff that has transformed as well. They're now providing valuable oversight on our AI agents and helping us ensure that it's performing within the necessary parameters and it's delivering the right outputs. It's just the first set of use cases supporting the first pre-adjudication leg, but there's a much broader end-to-end transformation roadmap for our real estate secure lending operations. So we're just getting started. And as we gradually scale AI use within RESL operations, we'll start to see more role transformation across the board. On a similar vein I find the roles of our frontline colleagues are gradually evolving, transforming too. So our colleagues in branches are now using gen AI virtual assistants to help prepare for client meetings, answer complex questions effectively. Our colleagues in TD Securities are now using these virtual assistants to speed up the research process and really amplify the sales cycle. So across our frontline, our new hires now have an expert AI support on their fingertips, which means they can now spend far more time focusing on sales advice, deepening relationships with our clients. So slowly but surely, we see these roles evolving, getting actually much, much more client-focused and less manual work and less operational focus, if you will. Brett:What is TD doing to help train and upskill colleagues so that they can build the AI skills they need to thrive in these transformed roles? And I guess how do upskilling efforts differ for an individual who's a beginner with AI versus a new hire at Layer 6 who's looking to build their AI skills? Sumee:Yeah, it's a great question. We're actually employing a multi-pronged training strategy for AI across the organization. Obviously it's customized to your function, your role within the organization, but it takes many formats. It could be trainings, recordings, live, virtual or in-person immersive hands-on sessions, hackathons, longer-term programs and pilots, et cetera. Across the gamut, depending on the role you're in, depending upon the function you're in. I'll maybe talk about a few initiatives, what we've rolled out across the organization. The first one I'll highlight is TD Thrive, which is our enterprise learning platform. The difference between what you paid and what you sold it for is your gain. To access that money, you have to time the market and sell part or all of the asset. Cash flow: the asset pays you income on a regular schedule, regardless of what the underlying value does. You never have to sell to get the return. That's the core distinction. One requires a sale. The other just keeps paying. Bruce puts it simply: put $100,000 into something generating 12% a year, and you receive $12,000 while keeping the original $100,000. Net worth is now $112,000, and it repeats. With a capital gain, realizing that same $12,000 means selling a portion of the asset and redeploying it somewhere else. The Net Investable Income Loop Rachel frames cash flow in terms of what it does to your total income picture. When an asset produces income, it stacks on top of your earned income. A greater share of your total income can then flow into savings, which buys more assets. That process repeats, capital building incrementally, month after month. A salary arrives monthly, a cash-flowing portfolio can too. You're not waiting for a sale to realize value; you're receiving it continuously, and your liquidity is building the whole time. And the usual end goal of an appreciating asset is eventually to convert it into cash flow, to liquidate it someday and live off the proceeds. Starting the cash flow earlier just gives you the predictability sooner. What Makes an Asset Worth Owning for Cash Flow Three qualities define an ideal cash-flowing asset: Steady, predictable income The ability to liquidate if necessary Underlying growth, so if you do sell, you sell at a gain You rarely get all three at once. As Bruce puts it, drawing on economist Thomas Sowell, there are no solutions, only tradeoffs. Wanting instant liquidity means accepting weaker cash flow, because liquid money can't be committed to a long-term position. This is why we talk about liquidity diversification alongside asset diversification and tax diversification. Some capital should be reachable quickly. Some is committed long-term. Spreading across both means a business (which has very little liquidity) isn't your only holding. Know Yourself Before You Know the Asset Investor DNA, or unique ability investing, is the other half of the equation. Before evaluating any asset, the right questions are: does this match your value system? Does the knowledge required match your expertise, or are you willing to build it? Investing deliberately inside your sphere of knowledge gives you more control, a better read on the risks, and a cleaner exit strategy if you ever need one. "Where do you put your money?" is a question that only makes sense in the context of your goals, your timeline, and your risk tolerance. What works for one person doesn't automatically work for another. The Best Cash-Flowing Assets and the Tradeoffs of Each Rental Real Estate Real estate has more entry points than people often expect: single-family rentals, duplexes, multifamily, commercial space, self-storage, mobile home parks, short-term rentals, and syndications. Each has its own risk profile, capital requirement, and management burden. The goal in any of these is to be cash-flow positive: rent covers the mortgage, and insurance, and taxes, and every operating cost, with a surplus left over. That surplus is your monthly income. Add the tax depreciation side, and rental real estate stacks up as one of the more tax-efficient income-producing assets. The honest tradeoff: there's no truly passive income in rental real estate. Tenants, toilets, and termites are real. Even with a property manager, you're managing a person, and that takes time and attention. Bruce has owned close to a dozen properties and eventually moved away from direct ownership for exactly this reason. DIY versus turnkey is a cost-and-return decision. Doing everything yourself preserves margin. Paying for management reduces your burden but eats into cash flow. Neither is wrong; it depends on how much of your time the asset is worth. Real estate pairs well with Infinite Banking. A policy loan funds the down payment. Rental income repays the loan. The cash value in the policy keeps compounding uninterrupted the entire time, so you're building in two places at once. Business Ownership Operating a business is not the same as owning one. A cash-flowing business pays income without requiring all your time. If every dollar you earn is directly tied to the hour you spent working, that's self-employment, not an asset. The distinction is real, because only one of those is something you can eventually step back from. To move from self-employed to business owner, you need systems, processes, and team. Robert Kiyosaki's cash-flow quadrant makes the point clearly: the right side of the quadrant only works when the business can run without you as the bottleneck. What makes a business valuable is that it's hard. Businesses solve problems people don't want to solve for themselves. Jeff Bezos built Amazon around one insight: people don't want to leave the house for every item they need. The service was obvious in hindsight, painful to build, and enormously valuable precisely because it was. That's the pattern. Treat the business as a business, not a hobby. That means watching expenses, marketing, sustainability, succession planning, taxes, and accounting. Revenue without profitability isn't cash flow. Infinite Banking connects here in several ways: storing liquidity reserves and buffer capital, funding key-man insurance, deferred compensation,, and quarterly tax payments. The policy becomes the business's financial backbone. Private Lending and Notes Private lending means providing capital to a borrower, secured against collateral, at a stated interest rate, paid back as monthly income. Often structured as interest-only, which maximizes the cash flow to the lender. The principal is secured by the underlying asset. Terms vary: a fixed payoff date, a refinance trigger, or a short-term arrangement like a fix-and-flip hard money loan. A short-term flip might carry a 12% annualized rate, but since the loan only runs for four to six months, the actual dollar return is less than the rate suggests. IBC practitioners often use policy cash value for private lending. The borrower's repayments come back, pays down the policy loan, and then the cycle repeats, predictable monthly income from a controlled capital reservoir. The tradeoff: this is the debt side of real estate. Some investors prefer equity, owning a piece of something rather than lending against it. Both are valid; the preference depends on your risk tolerance and how you want to be positioned. Dividend-Paying Stocks and Traded REITs Dividend-paying stocks, like Coca-Cola and UPS, are common examples that pay a stated yield per share, typically quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. You can take the income as cash or reinvest it through a dividend reinvestment program (DRIP), which automatically buys additional fractional shares. Traded real estate investment trusts (REITs) work similarly: a trust holds a portfolio of real estate, rents are collected, and the yield is distributed to shareholders. The tradeoff is real: both carry market correlation....
