In this episode, Cindy Esliger addresses the belief that if one generation of women endured suffering in order to succeed, the next generation must too. Some women, consciously or not, believe that hardship is a necessary rite of passage. They gatekeep and end up reinforcing a toxic culture instead of paving the way for women coming up after them to succeed with fewer obstacles. Cindy looks at how to break this cycle, how to redefine the goal as not just enduring the hardships of the system, but to change the system. With this in mind, a future of thriving, not simply surviving, can exist between generations in the workplace. The fact that some women seem intent on ensuring future generations endure the same suffering they did comes from surviving the continued traumas of toxic workplaces. It's a type of internalized misogyny disguised as high standards, making the bar one of how much abuse can be suffered. Cindy makes the case for dismantling this cycle because it's doing more collective harm than good. We can choose to energize the next generation instead of exhausting them. Resources are not as limited as we've been led to believe. Women can win and be celebrated by each other without anyone losing. True leadership isn't about exerting power over anyone. Cindy stresses that it's about building something sustainable together. So, how do we break this ingrained cycle and build something better? Cindy offers five ways to start: 1. Choose mentorship over gatekeeping, 2. Redefine what strength looks like, 3. Celebrate collective wins, 4. Push for structural change, and 5. Create new measures of readiness and performance. We welcome you to this in-depth, investigative, fact-finding episode of Light ‘Em Up.Thank you for joining us — as we march one step closer to achieving an enormous milestone, our 100th episode!In this episode we are diving into complex and impactful topics. We'll drill down on the concept of Birthright Citizenship — enshrined by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The 14th Amendment does not equivocate. It states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States.” A president cannot change those facts with a stroke of his pen.We will introduce to you in detail the concepts of jus soli and jus sanguinis.Jus soli: The principle of law also known as birthright citizenship is the principle that a person's citizenship is determined by the place of their birth, regardless of the parents' nationality.It contrasts with jus sanguinis, which determines citizenship based on parentage.On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order trying to end birthright citizenship. Specifically, the order states that after February 19, 2025, citizenship will only be granted to babies born in the United States if at least one parent is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.Birthright citizenship stems from the principle of jus soli, that all children born in the United States are U.S. citizens. Birthright citizenship has remained a bedrock of our country and was enshrined in our constitution in 1868 when the states ratified the Fourteenth Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment was ratified to repudiate the infamous Dred Scott decision that denied Black people the protections of U.S. citizenship. In 1898, the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed that children born in the U.S. to immigrant parents were entitled to U.S. citizenship in the case United States v. Wong Kim Ark.Over 250 years ago our founding fathers, in the constitution, established 3 separate branches of government: the Executive, Judicial and Legislative. The Supreme Court (and the MAGA 6 on the court) have ceded a great deal of the other 2 branches' power to the Executive Branch — doing tremendous harm to the country.Chief Justice John Marshall famously said, “It has always been the duty and responsibility of the Federal Judiciary to say what the law is, both as to constitutional and statutory law” The Federal Judiciary is not a political role, at all. Donald Trump has sought to “weaponize” the law and the judiciary to appease his whims. Rich people can afford their whims.We examine in depth how Trump's large-scale deportations will have devastating impact on employment across our nation. The nativist Trump administration is waging a war against the rule of law.When all the migrant workers who pick and process the oranges in sunny Florida are arrested, detained and deported and when a glass of orange juice at your golf course county club will cost $35 — you'll clearly understand the true costs and the real human effects of Trump's campaign of xenophobic arrests, detentions and deportations will have on the economy and workforce of the U.S.Barely 2 months into his administration he has issued over 100 executive orders. Angira shares her journey from being a behind-the-scenes introvert to stepping into the spotlight and embracing her role as the face of the organization. Here's what helped her: Name the self-doubt. Even with advanced degrees and leadership experience, Angira realized she was holding herself back due to a quiet sense of imposter syndrome. She asked herself, “Why don't I want to be the face of this organization?” and uncovered the self-doubt beneath the surface. Use grounding mantras. To counter that doubt, Angira leans on a simple, powerful mantra: “I am enough. I am worthy.” She repeats it daily and whenever insecurity arises as a reminder of her value and strength. Redefine what leadership looks like. Angira noticed that we often idolize a certain kind of leader—someone loud, charismatic, preaching from the mountaintop. But that's not her style, and that's okay. She's a thoughtful, cerebral leader who needs time to reflect before responding. By embracing her authentic self, she realized she could lead powerfully as herself, not in spite of herself. Angira reminds us that leadership doesn't require becoming someone else. Consider/Ask Yourself: Do you feel responsible for other people's healing, happiness, or choices? Have you been confusing helping with over-giving—or love with martyrdom? Are you exhausted from trying to fix or save others who haven't asked for your support? What might open up for you if you believed that everyone is on their own soul path—and you don't have to intervene? Key Insights and A-HAs: Being the “savior” is often a survival role rooted in early identity confusion—not your true purpose. There's a sacred difference between being of service and being responsible for others. You can give people the dignity of their own process—and that is its own act of love. God/Source never asks you to deplete yourself in the name of love. When you stop over-giving, you make space for reciprocal love, rest, and your rightful life. How to Deepen the Work: Reflect on this mantra: “I no longer rob others of the dignity of their own process.” Get honest about where you're still playing the role of rescuer—and release it with compassion. Reorient your energy through prayer, meditation, or spiritual practices that restore you. Redefine your non-negotiables in relationships, especially around addiction, boundaries, and reciprocity. Begin to build a new identity: one rooted in self-trust, clear agreements, and spiritual alignment—not sacrifice.
