The Science of Happiness
Why We Should Look Up at the Sky

The Science of Happiness

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2023 20:06

When did you last take a moment to really look up at the sky? Shifting your gaze upward can help us be more creative, it improves our capacity to focus - and it's a gateway to awe. Episode summary: Natalie didn't spend much time finding shapes in the clouds as a small kid. And when she got older, looking up was even worse for her. Natalie spent time in jail, where she spent most of her days indoors under harsh lights. Today, she's a student at a prestigious university. She tried a practice in looking up for our show. When we look up, our brain gets better at being playful, creative, and thinking critically. We also tend to see vast and beautiful things above our heads, like a canopy of leaves, branches and singing birds, or a starry night sky. Often, looking up is all we need to do to find moments of awe in our day-to-day lives. And that's a wonderful thing, because feeling awe changes how our brains work in a way that's really good for us. This is the second episode of The Science of Happiness in a three-part series called The Science of Awe. If you'd like to learn more about awe, our host, Dacher Keltner, has a new book out about it. It's called Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life. Learn more here:

We've got some bonus content for you guys, as renowned author/ Chessable author FM Michiel Abeln joined me on the first rest day to discuss the ongoing Tata Steel Chess tournament. Tata Steel is an annual tournament in the Netherlands which routinely attracts many of the world's top players as well as rising stars. It is run concurrently with tournaments open to all, and is celebrating its 85th anniversay this year!  We recorded the podcast the day after Anish Giri beat Magnus Carlsen in impressive fashion, but we focus more on the “big picture” of the tournament rather than the current standings. Michiel and I discuss questions such as: What makes Tata Steel such a special tournament? What is it like to be there right now? What should amateurs who are considering attending or playing in the tournament in the future know? Which players and games have impressed Michiel so far? Michael lives near the tournament venue and has been visiting it for over a decade, so he was very helpful in putting this year's event into context. He has also been writing about the tournament for The Week in Chess. Tata Steel has such a storied legacy in the chess world and it was great to get some perspective from a knowledgeable local about the past and present of this classic tournament! Our Prior Interview: Episode 156 with Michiel Abeln  04:00- What would surprise a recreational chess player who decided to show up and play in the Open Tournament at Wijk an Zee?  Mentioned: Kings, Queens and Rookies (new book from New in Chess) 07:30- How much can fans interact with the top players there? I have been following Michiel for a number of years and was delighted to finally catch up with him on Money & Plants earlier this week. For any entrepreneur, the holy grail is often to exit or sell your business. For Michiel he has achieved that now a number of times, firstly selling his on line classified advert business, the most successful in Belgium to EBAY in 2013, which was a huge success for him personally. Following some downtime, travelling around Australia drinking cocktails and loving life, this curious psychology graduate, couldn't resist the urge to get back into business, and over the last ten years, he has went into achieve incredible results lending his experiemce, expertise and own cash, to a number of fantastic entrepreneurs and businesses, achieving more exits, and more cheques along the way. In this conversation I lift the bonnet on all of this, trying to get a feel for how Michiel thinks, works, and ultimately decides what companies he will invest in. I drill into some of Michael's characteristics in this conversation covering items like the three successful habits of an entrepreneur, advice he would give to anyone starting a business, how to push through hard times, to what keeps him awake at night. It was interesting the focus and importance Michiel put on knowing your numbers, which is pretty much non negotiable for anyone looking him or his investment company, Capital V's money. What really struck me about Michiel in this conversation and one of the reasons I admire him and wanted to get him on this show was his humility and ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Many entrepreneurs evolve, just like the rest of us humans, and it's interesting that Michiel has devided to CHANGE alot about his life, including developing a real passion for animals and becoming Vegan. His Investment platform Capital V, will only invest in companies that take the use of animals out of production, which is an incredibly conscious and admirable stragegy. A fellow IRONMAN triathlete also, with 7 x Ironman races under his belt, that also tells you abit about Michiels mindset and "must do attitude" and approach he has to living. For anyone looking to achieve success in life and business, I am sure you will get some value from this conversation. Please share with a friend and leave me a review wherever you get your podcasts if you have a moment. You can contact me on conor@conordevine.com for any feedback or questions about the show. This could prevent millions of trees being cut each year. After many years of hardship and continuous technical improvements, the first large scale factory is opening its doors in 2023 in the PhilippinesMichiel loves a challenge , if it is in the ring, sailing to Brazil or solving pressing environmental problems. He learned early on that avoiding pain and discomfort at all costs doesn't get you anywhere and if you think it's worth it; just start and get it done. The diminishing forest where one of the challenges he considered that made perfectly sense to find a solution to. First alone and later with a brilliant team, he developed an alternative for wooden one-way export pallets by compressing coconut husk waste -that is often just burned - into strong, circular and affordable CocoPallets.About CocoPalletCocoPallet, a transport pallet pressed from only the coconut husk which is normally wasted. Circular and 100% bio-degradable. At least 25% cheaper than the millions of wooden one-way export pallets from South-East Asia we intend to replace. Preventing millions of trees and billions of coconut husks to be wasted. CocoPallet offers coconut farmers additional income, lower cost and CO2 in the supply chain and at the end the CocoPallet can be milled and used as high quality soil improver for agricultural purposes. Powered by: The Social Impact Jobs board - Learn more---> Check out the Causeartist Partners here.---> Subscribe to the Causeartist Newsletter here.Listen to more Causeartist podcast shows hereFollow Grant on Twitter and LinkedInFollow Causeartist on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram

“REST” The fourth stop on our Castlevania series retrospective is the (generally maligned) first handheld incarnation, Castlevania: The Adventure. Leon, Brian, Jon, Michiel and community correspondents charge up their AA batteries for a session of this brief but punishing quest. Next up though, is M2's 'remake'/tribute (arguably in name only), Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. a relatively obscure 2009 WiiWare title that sees the panellists and the show go out on something of a whip-crackin' high. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_537.mp3   Music featured in this issue:1. Gemmel & Tim explores the lives and untimely passings of Gemmel Moore and Timroy Dean, two Black gay men who both died from meth overdoses at the home of West Hollywood politico Ed Buck. Their deaths at the now-infamous apartment sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community. The ensuing media circus cooked up a spicy concoction of sex, drugs, race and politics, but had no appetite for the in-depth human stories of who these individuals truly were. This documentary looks at Gemmel and Tim's parallel walks of life. Powerful and galvanizing, Gemmel & Tim simultaneously investigates the crimes and offers a cautionary tale to keep these events from repeating. The film premiered at Outfest Los Angeles 2021. Belgian native Michiel Thomas is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and editor based in Los Angeles, CA. His debut documentary GAME FACE was distributed worldwide by Netflix in 2016, screened at more than 50 international film festivals and won a dozen awards. His second feature doc THAT'S WILD, was acquired by AMC Networks, screened at over 30 film festivals in 5 continents and won 5 awards.  With co-host Brody Levesque

The ensuing media circus cooked up a spicy concoction of sex, drugs, race and politics, but had no appetite for the in-depth human stories of who these individuals truly were valued. GEMMEL & TIM looks at Gemmel and Tim's parallel walks of life through the eyes of their extended and chosen families – memories, correspondence, and things they did and didn't share with each other. Through intimate recollections of their lost friends, each character exposes their own personal journey in dealing with grief. Powerful and galvanizing, Gemmel & Tim simultaneously investigates the crimes and offers a cautionary tale to keep these events from repeating. Director Michiel Thomas joins us for a conversation on cultural, political, and community dynamics that hamstrung the initial investigation and the relentless pursuit of justice by friends and family that eventually brought some semblance of justice for these two young men. The world of content creators is deep and wide. There exists literally at least one creator for almost every interest or niche out there. Part of what I love about being an influence marketing strategist is discovering new, interesting, creative people who connect with audiences in fun ways. If they make sense to work with a client I'm helping, I get super excited. In addition to the diversity of topics the world of content creation offers is the diversity of business models, sizes and scopes of a creator's per view. What I mean by that is some creators focus on one channel or another and do the occasional brand deal to monetize their content there. That's the standard expectation for an influencer I think. Still others see their content creation as a business, not a hobby with an income. They may see each of their channels as a revenue stream and optimize their content and sales acumen accordingly.  Take that a step further and a content creator has the mind of a publisher. They're a media channel and reach audiences in multiple ways. They have blogs and social networks for publishing written content. They have those social networks and YouTube to run their own television network. They have podcasts to have a radio network and so on.  Michiel Perry is one such creator. It's no surprise she sees her Black Southern Belle channels as a media empire of sorts. She spent several years in the “real world” as a public policy communications professional. She worked for the U.S. State Department and Google, among other places. So she came into this content creator world knowing a thing or two about the business.  I wanted to talk to Michiel for a couple of reasons. I knew she was a successful content creator, but one who had expanded beyond that label to running a media company in the social-first world we live in. She's also unique in that her social channels are very much about the community around Black Southern Bell, not just her perspective.  That's old school social media. And I like it. But, as I'm also want to do, I saw an opportunity to talk to her about race and its impact on her world that maybe we who don't live in the world of the disenfranchised understand.  And as I culled back through her content to prepare for the conversation, one post caught my eye that I knew I had to talk to her about. I think you'll appreciate that part of the conversation, too. This episode of Winfluence is presented by Tagger, a complete influence marketing software solution.
