Giuseppe Castellano talks to Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator, Paul O. Zelinsky, about what his former Yale professor, Maurice Sendak, thought about social media; why he's aways wondering at point he can get away with not being good enough; where illustrators can find validation (hint: it's not in an award); and more.
In this episode we are joined by Paul O. Zelinsky!Paul O. Zelinsky grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, the son of a mathematics professor father and a medical illustrator mother. He drew compulsively from an early age, but did not know until college that this would be his career. As a Sophomore in Yale College he enrolled in a course on the history and practice of the picture book, co-taught by an English professor and Maurice Sendak. This experience inspired Paul to point himself in the direction of children's books. His first book appeared in 1978, since which time he has become recognized as one of the most inventive and critically successful artists in the field. He now lives with his wife in Brooklyn, New York. They have two grown daughters.Among many other awards and prizes, he received the 1998 Caldecott Medal for his illustrated retelling of Rapunzel, as well as Caldecott Honors for three of his books: Hansel and Gretel (1985), Rumpelstiltskin (1987), and Swamp Angel (1995). In 2018, Paul was given the Carle Honor Award for Illustration.Check out his books here: https://www.paulozelinsky.com/Support the show
Richly hued oil paintings complement a story simply and gracefully told. “Children...love the story for its mystery, and its familiarity. Adults will find that, like most classic fairy tales, this one rewards periodic rethinking." --New York Times Book Review" Zelinsky's smooth retelling and glowing pictures cast the story in a new and beautiful light." -- School Library Journal. Books That Make You Want to Celebrate the Holidays in Many Ways The holidays mean different things to different people. Year after year, while we celebrate many of the same traditions, we can also learn at any time about history, the true meaning of giving, and inclusiveness. Such messages can be especially poignant for children. These four guests have all written holiday-themed books with a special message. Thus, we're going to have a good time here -- in this special holiday Books That Make You Show: We have Maria Alexander, author of “Snowed”, the first book in the “Bloodline of Yule” Trilogy, among many other horror and comedy crime stories. There's also Gina Cavalier and Jeanette DePattie, who collaborated for “How I Became Santa Claus”, a book that allows us to see what it's like to be Santa. We also have Lee Wind, author of “Red and Green and Blue and White,” illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, which is based on the true story of a Jewish and Christian family who helped to bring a community together for the holidays.
It's been a while since we tackled a book with that awe-inspiring, shiny Gold Caldecott medal on its cover. As such, it seemed wise to break out Paul O. Zelinsky's major award winner. Limiting our Into the Woods quotes to the bare minimum, Kate proves to be the perfect reader for this book, having only seen Tangled once, and that was while drunk and one-eyed. She's practically a clean slate! Plus, it seems appropriate to do a story on a woman attempting (and failing) to enforce chastity at a time when Texas is controlling women's bodies at an increasing rate. SHOW NOTES: https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2019/09/bonus-episode-superfight.html In May 2019 I posted an interview with Jonathan Auxier, the author of Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster. In our interview we talked about the book, of course, but we also talked about our favorite board games. I met Jonathan at the 2019 Association of Jewish Libraries conference where he'd come to accept his Sydney Taylor Book Award, and we got to play one of those games together along with a roomful of other authors, illustrators, and librarians. Here's your chance to listen in as we play a round of Superfight: A Game of Absurd Arguments. First we'll hear the description of the game from Jonathan's May 2019 appearance on The Book of Life podcast. Then we'll hear a clip of me versus Jonathan Auxier in actual gameplay. Just so you know, the game was ultimately won by illustrator Paul O. Zelinsky, who was at the conference to receive the Sydney Taylor Book Award for All-of-a-Kind Family Hanukkah. His Superfight character was Gal Gadot (because he drew the card letting him pick a favorite actor), who was unaffected by impact, but who had no depth perception. He won a badminton challenge against a tween werewolf with jellyfish instead of hands. That's Superfight for you! Your feedback is appreciated! Remember All-of-a-Kind Family? It's the classic chapter book by Sydney Taylor, of five sisters living on the Lower East Side in the early 20th century. Now Emily Jenkins and Paul O. Zelinsky have created an original picture book based on those same characters, All-of-a-Kind Family Hanukkah. Illustrator Zelinsky attended the 2018 Association of Jewish Libraries conference where he gave us a sneak peek at his artistic process, as you can see in the photo above. I snagged his email address and arranged a conference call with him and author Emily Jenkins, and that's what you'll hear on this podcast.
