Director David Lowery on How 'The Red Shoes,' Taylor Swift, and Artistic Internal Struggles Were Forged to Conjure Up 'Mother Mary' [AUDIO INTERVIEW]

Back in 2021 I proclaimed in my review of The Green Knight that writer-director David Lowery was "the great American director of his generation;" a statement that holds even stronger weight given the rising talent behind the camera in modern filmmaking. With his latest film, Mother Mary, Lowery gives this writer enough ammunition to back up that proclamation as he's created yet another bold, poppy, hypnotic drama that could only come from the mind of a special, singular talent; a master of the artform. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the eldest of nine children, Lowery and his family moved to Texas in his youth, and where he and his family still reside today. His curiosity for film sprung at a young age, with the director making his first short when he was nineteen years old, and from there on, a slew of independent narrative feature films that included Deadroom, It Was Great, But I Was Ready to Come Home, and St. Nick. His breakthrough came within a two-year span, with his short film Pioneer winning the Competition and Grand Jury Award at the South by Southwest Film Festival, which lead to the release of his 2013 romantic crime drama, Ain't Them Bodies Saints, which was nominated for the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and garnered a Best Feature nominated at the Gotham Awards that same year. Those two projects were a springboard for Lowery into the public consciousness, as he was given bigger opportunities to explore his complex themes of humanity that lies at the core of his filmography. In 2016, he delivered the best Disney live-action adaptation yet with version of Pete's Dragon, followed up the next year the smaller, intimate yet profound meditation of the loss of someone and letting go as we enter the afterlife with A Ghost Story, and finishing this incredible three year run in 2018 with The Old Man and the Gun, a warm crime drama based on a true story that not only serves as an entertaining piece of throwback cinema, but an owe to one of the greatest actors of all time and the star of the film, Robert Redford. As we swung into the 2020s, Lowery gave us the aforementioned The Green Knight, a film I hailed as "a medieval masterpiece," and is, in my mind, one of the best films of the decade so far. He returned to Disney with a reimagining of the classic Peter Pan story with Peter Pan and Wendy, a film that may not be as successful as Pete's Dragon but it was a project Lowery found a sense of change within himself, and as he states in this interview for The Film Stage, he discovered the right amount of "courage and conviction" needed to make his latest, Mother Mary. In her review, our own Sophia Ciminello praised Lowery's film as "a beguiling, religious experience that will only get richer with the passage of time," as well as stated that just like Lowery's other standout work, "Mother Mary is about the ephemeral and the eternal, yet in an entirely new package for the filmmaker," it's another standout achievement from this visionary artist.  In a recent in-person conversation, the Mother Mary writer-director and I discussed about his origins to the project, being a massive fan of pop music, crafting this world with the film's production designer Francesca Di Mottola, as well as his work in helping the edit of the film. We also spoke about his collaborations with FKA twigs, Charli XCX, and Jack Antonoff on producing the original music in Mother Mary, molding his lead characters with his lead actresses Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, and his thoughts on the state of independent cinema and the role he sees himself in it as the industry is in a constant state of change. This wasn't the first time the director and I met, as we first spoke at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where we not only share a geek out moment of being in a three-person conversation with director Alfonso Cuarón, but it was the first weekend where Lowery has seen all of the footage of Mother Mary together as one cut. At the top of the conversation lies our reunion, as well as a look into his influences on the program, ranging from The Red Shoes to Taylor Swift concerts. Only someone as special as Lowery could take the wide ranging scope of this world and make it come to life, thus continuing to be a singular talent in a time where artistic expression and creativity is vastly need.

The Magician's Elephant teaches us that even the impossible can be possible when we open our eyes and hearts to those around us. Baltese is a town where nothing extraordinary ever happens. Recovering from a recent war, it's a lonely place, where young Peter lives a harsh life. Then one day, a magician conjures an elephant from the sky. The creature's appearance sets off a chain of events so remarkable, so impossible, that it changes Baltese forever. As Peter is catapulted into the quest of his life, he discovers a magical bond with the majestic creature and risks everything not only to find his sister, but to set the elephant free.Nancy Harris (Book and lyrics) is an award-winning playwright from Dublin whose work has been produced in Dublin, London, and New York. Welcome back to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, the boys attempt to break down, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. In their most popular, acclaimed film of their career, Powell and Pressburger take a look into the competitive, obsessive world of ballet and the personal scarifies it takes to make real art. With The Red Shoes, they created another lasting masterpiece, one with a trio of incredible performances, expert dialogue, a twisted ending, and one of the greatest sequences in film history involving the titular film's ballet. Ryan, Jay, and Sophia break down their admiration for the film, the price it takes Victoria Page to become the best dancer in the world, the jealousy of Boris Lermontov, the naiveté of Julian Craster, how the duo behind the camera were able to pull off that miraculous sequence, the food, the clothing, the mixture of location shooting and sets, the process it took to preserve this film via the Criterion Collection and Martin Scorsese, and one of the biggest, longest weekly recommendations in the history of Director Watch. In taking a darker turn with their latest film, Powell and Pressburger explore the role of temptation, guilt has on the mind when dealing with religion in Black Narcissus. A film that is about a group of nuns coming to a small village to spread their word of god only to be internally turned upside down by the human impulses being challenged by their beliefs in god and their mission, thus leading to one of the hottest, most complex films the duo ever created. Ryan, Jay, and Dave break down their thoughts on the film, the religious conversations the film is having, how gorgeous the film is, how sexy David Farrar is as Mr. Dean, the use of color photography in the film, and a silly summer movie bet between the two co-hosts that is from a galaxy far, far away.  You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. In this exercise in somewhat effective stunt-casting, Stabler gets pitted against his untethered analog, a rage-fueled annihilator of tween girls played by erstwhile star actor Matthew Modine. Yes, this week, the Munchie Boys took on “Rage” (SVU S6E17). In a structurally odd episode that pits rager against rager in a ticking-clock, nearly locked-room scenario until it suddenly isn't and renders much of what preceded moot, Stabler tries to nab the one who got away while confronting his own anger management issues. Don't worry, there's also talk of malodorous food PsyOps, truly pornographic whistling, edging, the nature of the San Fernando Valley, Modine's inability to shed his yuppie prick veneer, and so much more.Music:Divorcio Suave - “Munchy Business”Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Diana R, Tony B, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Suzanne B, Tim Y, John P, John W, Elia S, Rebecca B, Lily, Sarah L, Melsa A, Alyssa C, Johnathon M, Tiffany C, Brian B, Whitney C, Alex, Jannicke HS, Erin M, Melissa H, Olivia, Holly F, Karina H, Zak B, Karyn R, Summer S, and Matt - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too! A (relatively) in-depth analysis of Director's Cut by the English singer-songwriter Kate Bush.Released in 2011, the album consists of new versions of songs from the earlier albums The Sensual World (1989) and The Red Shoes (1993). All tracks have new lead vocals, drums, and instrumentation and are remixed and restructured. Some song were transposed to a lower key to accommodate Bush's lowering voice. Three of the songs, including 'This Woman's Work', have been completely re-recorded, often with lyrics changed in places. Bush described the album as a new project rather than a collection of remixes. It was Bush's first album release since 2005's Aerial and the first on her own record label, Fish People. Bush wrote all of the songs and lyrics with the exception of lines borrowed from James Joyce. The album has received mostly positive critical reviews.I do hope you enjoy this episode.Mathew Woodallhttps://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. In this episode we revisit three Technicolor melodramas made by British cinema's great auteur duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, bursting with vibrant emotions and sensuality that exercise a dangerous allure over their protagonists: Clive Candy, the upper-class colonialist twerp played by Roger Livesey in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) who discovers the poetry in his soul thanks to the influence of three in-Kerr-nations of Deborah Kerr and the friendship of Anton Walbrook; Sister Clodagh (Kerr again) in Black Narcissus (1947), futilely pitting the Protestant work ethic against the infinite; and Victoria Page (Moira Shearer) in The Red Shoes (1948), torn between the demands of art and mere humanity. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, more Naruse: Flowing (1956), a study of a declining geisha house through the perspective of Kinuyo Tanaka's kindly but powerless servant, and The Stranger Within a Woman (1966), a film noir about being consumed by guilt while the world just wants you to move on.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:    Brief Intro - Powell and Pressburger 0h 07m 11s:    THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (1943) [dir. What if your phone was never meant to serve you at all? Writer and researcher Shannon Rowan returns to The Healthier Tech Podcast to break down the uncomfortable truth behind modern technology. Drawing from her latest book The Red Shoes, Shannon explains why today's devices behave less like tools and more like addictive systems engineered to hijack attention, behavior, and health. This conversation goes far beyond screen time tips. In this episode, we explore: The chilling metaphor of The Red Shoes and how it explains digital addiction and loss of control Why infinite scroll, notifications, and pull to refresh are modeled after slot machines How dopamine driven design rewires the brain and undermines focus, empathy, and decision making Why tech addiction mirrors substance abuse and why experts compare smartphones to cocaine and heroin The physical consequences of constant device use, especially for children A disturbing hospital case that raises questions about EMFs and infant health The hidden environmental cost of modern tech, from lithium mining to data centers and AI Why green tech and electric vehicles may not be as clean as advertised How tech erases boundaries between work, rest, and relationships Simple, realistic boundaries that can dramatically reduce stress and digital overwhelm This episode challenges the idea that faster, smarter, and more connected automatically means healthier. If you have ever felt anxious, overstimulated, distracted, or uneasy about the direction technology is heading, this conversation will change how you see your devices. In the latest episode of Tin Foil Hat, special guest Shannon Rowan discusses her new book The Red Shoes and how the story's metaphor reflects the way modern technology is sold as convenience while secretly acting as a tool of control. She highlights the history of mind control experiments and early cybernetics research from the 1940s to the 1960s, arguing that these efforts helped shape the internet and a hidden plan to make humanity dependent on a digital matrix. Rowan also explains how app and tech design uses Pavlovian conditioning, Skinner box research, and operant conditioning to create cravings and reward loops that drive behavioral addiction. Please subscribe to the new Tin Foil Hat youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TinFoilHatYoutubeGrab your copy of the 2nd issue of the Chaos Twins now and join the Army Of Chaos:https://bit.ly/415fDfYCheck out Sam "DoomScrollin with Sam Tripoli and Midnight Mike" Every Tuesday At 4pm pst on Youtube, X Twitter, Rumble and Rokfin!Join the WolfPack at Wise Wolf Gold and Silver and start hedging your financial position by investing in precious metals now! In today's episode we're going to have a look at a couple of films made several decades apart that look at the goings-on behind the scenes in ballet companies. In this half of the episode, we're reviewing THE RED SHOES (1948), directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. We have impresario-type behavior, composers with big egos, love triangles, and all of it rather thinly overlaid on a Hans Christian Andersen story. But that's not a bad thing, even though there's at least one sticking point where Sean and I disagree. (It's minor, but we're each staying to our own side of the street on this one.) In Part 2 we jump into this century for a Robert Altman film.

In Part 2 of today's episode, we look at TRISTRAM SHANDY: A COCK AND BULL STORY, directed by Michael Winterbottom. Steve Coogan is an exaggerated version of himself (we hope), playing the title character in the film adaptation of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. He's constantly sparring with another actor in the film over the relative importance of their roles. The director doesn't appear to have a good handle on the source material, but oddly enough the two people who do are constantly ignored. If you've ever watched a film and wondered "How did this get made?", this might provide the answer. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Next time, we go to the ballet, starting with the 1948 film THE RED SHOES, written and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Sean and Claude both enjoyed this film while having some rather different opinions about it. From there we move on to 2003's THE COMPANY, directed by Robert Altman. It follows a season of rehearsal and performances at the Joffrey Ballet. It stars Neve Campbell, James Franco, and Malcolm McDowell. As with any Altman film, it's a little hard to follow at first but once you relax into his rhythms, you'll have a great time. Join us, won't you? .

Really Interesting Women  The Podcast Ep. 157 Meow Meow  It would be fair to say that few performers can command attention quite like Meow Meow. She has been described as a post-post-modern diva who has hypnotised, inspired, and terrified audiences globally with unique creations and sell-out seasons from New York's Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and Berlin's Bar Jeder Vernunft to London's West End and the Sydney Opera House.  In fact, her influence on contemporary cabaret extends beyond her individual performances to her role in reshaping the genre itself.  In further fact, the late great David Bowie once said of my guest, ‘Certain artists you just never miss; when they come into town, you go and see them'. She's currently in rehearsals for her show, ‘Meow Meow's The Red Shoes.' Opening in Belvoir Theatre in Sydney on 4 October and then in Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne from 19 November. I couldn't put it any better than the Artistic Director, Eamon Flack....'Here's a treat. If you've seen Meow's other great takes like The Little Mermaid or Little Match Girl you'll know there's sophisticated silliness and seductive allure, combined with astonishing renderings of some great songs, old and new. Meow sells out wherever she goes, from Carnegie Hall to Spiegeltents around the world – I'm sure the Belvoir stage will be a perfect fit for her newest extravaganza.'  Head to the link in my bio for our conversation.Visit instagram @reallyinterestingwomen for further interviews and posts of interesting women in history. But since their wings have got rusted, you know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes. But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain, that's when I knew that I could not refuse And I won't get any older, now the angels wanna wear my red shoes   I was watching while you're dancing away Our love got fractured in the echo and sway How come everybody wants to be your friend? You know that it still hurts me just to say it   Oh, I know that she's disgusted (oh why's that) Cause she's feeling so abused. (oh that's too bad) She gets tired of the lust, (oh I'm so sad) but it's so hard to refuse How can you say that I'm too old, when the angels have stolen my red shoes.   Oh, I said "I'm so happy, I could die" She said "Drop dead," then left with another guy That's what you get if you go chasing after vengeance. Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence. Oh, I used to be disgusted and now I try to be amused. But since their wings have got rusted, you know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes. What does it mean to create movement that lasts a lifetime—work that outlives trends, resonates across genres, and moves audiences for generations? World-renowned choreographer Lar Lubovitch joined the studio for a mid-month episode to talk about his creative process and his upcoming projects! For more than six decades, Lar has shaped the landscape of dance with works that are both technically masterful and deeply human. His own company, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, founded in 1968, has created more than 120 works performed in more than 40 countries.Lar says that from the moment he started dancing, he knew he would be a choreographer. But dance is a journey he began relatively late at 19. He spoke about the freedom his later start in dance gave him to experiment, mix styles, and create work that bridges the divide between ballet and modern dance. All of this propelled him into success as a groundbreaking choreographer. In this interview, he discusses the intersections of his background as a painter and sculptor with his choreography, which he views similarly in brushstrokes and shapes that illustrate the music. He shares that the initial spark of joy seeing dancers move on stage that inspired him to explore dance in the first place is still inspiring him to this day. And he talks about how, at 82, he sees himself as an adult dancer needing to stay engaged with dance even while his experience with the art form evolves as he ages.He also spoke about his work on Broadway, including staging the original Broadway production of Into the Woods, which earned him a Tony nomination, The Red Shoes, winning an Astaire Award, and the Tony-winning revival of The King and I. He has also made contributions to choreography in the field of ice-dancing, creating dances for Olympic skaters and choreographing two ice-dances for television: The Sleeping Beauty (PBS) and The Planets (A&E, nominated for an International Emmy Award, a Cable Ace Award, and a Grammy Award). Finally, he shares the vision behind his new program, Art of the Solo, in which his solo works are brought to life by a cast of dancers as part of The Guggenheim's Works & Process Series in New York. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 108 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson discuss the latest film in their Paul Verhoeven series, Showgirls (1995). Following the massive cultural, commercial success of Basic Instinct, Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas turned their eye to the world of professional dancing as a young, ambitious girl, with a mysterious past, sets her sights on becoming a star as the main showgirl in over-the-top production set on the Las Vegas strip. The film was set up with massive expectations and the largest budget ever for an NC-17 film ($45m), Showgirls was hailed as one of the worst films of the 1990s, a box office bomb, and ruined star Elizabeth Berkley chances at becoming a star on the big screen like she was on television. But the film became a cult classic, and has now been fully reevaluated as a “masterpiece” of excess and the dangers women face within the entertainment industry; Verhoeven's The Red Shoes. Ryan, Jay, and Erik breakdown their relationship with the film, their favorite lines within the movie, the definition of “camp,” Berkley's rocky relationship with the film, how horrifying the sex is within the film, the legendary performance given by Gina Gershon, which characters they relate to, and which modern day pop-star Jay says has had a better 21st century success on the Billboard Charts than Madonna; a move that might see the end of the co-host as we know. Listen now to find out who mentions. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h45m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Paul Verhoeven with a review of his film, Starship Troopers. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Movie Roulette Tuesday: The Podcast

Send us a textOnce upon a time, not so long ago, this podcast had to explore the theme of Close Encounters, with the added shake-up that this week's pick must include a dance sequence.  So we watched a movie FULL of dance sequences; 1948's "The Red Shoes",  the story of a ballerina who had to choose between her commitment to ballet or her commitment to the man she loves.   This film is loosely based on the fairy tale of the same name.  We also delve into some intense fairy tale origins. Those Grimm brothers were not averse to gouging out some eyes, rolling women around in barrels of nails, or abducting children to teach a moral lesson. So put on your dancing shoes and make the right choice to listen in.  Otherwise, you may get eaten by a wolf... or cursed by a witch.... or turned into sea foam...

In this marathon episode of Baseless Conspiracies, Jon Herold and Zak “RedPill78” Paine go deep, like, Blackfriars Bridge-deep, into the tangled, bloodstained web of Vatican corruption, financial black ops, and historic conspiracies cloaked in red robes and even redder shoes. Sparked by the death of Pope Francis and the resignation of Klaus Schwab (both at age 88, the numerical symbol for “Heil Hitler”), Jon and Zak pull no punches as they unravel the historical and modern machinations of the Catholic Church. From the mysterious murder of “God's Banker” Roberto Calvi to the Vatican's documented money laundering for Nazis and fascists, they trace the legacy of corruption through the Vatican Bank, the Ustasha regime, and Operation Gladio. The hosts also break down the allegations against Cardinal Pell, was he a molester, a martyr, or a man framed for digging too close to the truth? Symbolism takes center stage with discussions on red shoes, rabbit imagery, and alleged adrenochrome connections, while they explore the Vatican's sovereign immunity, banking secrecy, and ties to ancient blood money. They even find time for a hilarious sidetrack into Zak's Nickelodeon days, Oak Island treasure hunts, and Vatican time machine rumors. This episode is part true crime, part theology, part international thriller, and 100% classic Baseless.

DREAM WITH US, and we'll teach you how to interpret them! What do the choices we make about the things we carry and wear reveal about who we are and the paths we take in life? Shoes as Symbols connect identity, culture, and creative adaptation. Shoes reflect our movement through life and mark pivotal transitions, helping us hold the tension between vulnerability and agency. They appear in myths and stories as agents of change, signaling the emergence of a new attitude and facilitating its embodiment. The simple act of wearing shoes bridges the physical and psychological, grounding us while enabling exploration. Shoes communicate individual and collective identity, shaping and revealing roles in society. Tales, like Hans Christian Andersen's The Red Shoes and Cinderella with her glass slippers, dramatize the tension between freedom and constraint, alienation and belonging. Exploring shoes in cultural narratives reveals their role in expressing and shaping psyche. Whether it's the first tiny black patent leather shoes for a holiday or the first ski boots, their presence in childhood marks key moments of growth and self-discovery. Shoes empower us to adventure forward by protecting our vulnerable feet in innumerable styles that reflect the way we wish to be seen. Without realizing it, every step reveals where we've come from and where we are heading. Prepare to discover… what shoes signify about the evolving relationship between our inner selves and the outer world we traverse, how shoes function as symbols of the soul's journey, expressing shifts in identity and steps toward psychological integration, which stories use shoes to represent the critical thresholds of life, such as independence, power, and self-discovery, whether the symbolic act of wearing or discarding shoes reveals the psyche's readiness for change or its resistance to transformation, why shoes, seemingly mundane objects, have become symbols of the human struggle for purpose, freedom, and meaning…and so much more.FIND A COPY OF THE DREAM WE ANALYZE HERE: https://thisjungianlife.com/shoes-as-symbolsLOOK & GROWJoin THIS JUNGIAN LIFE DREAM SCHOOLDo you have a topic you want us to cover?WE NEED YOUR HELP!
