Send us a textOnce upon a time, not so long ago, this podcast had to explore the theme of Close Encounters, with the added shake-up that this week's pick must include a dance sequence. So we watched a movie FULL of dance sequences; 1948's "The Red Shoes", the story of a ballerina who had to choose between her commitment to ballet or her commitment to the man she loves. This film is loosely based on the fairy tale of the same name. We also delve into some intense fairy tale origins. Those Grimm brothers were not averse to gouging out some eyes, rolling women around in barrels of nails, or abducting children to teach a moral lesson. So put on your dancing shoes and make the right choice to listen in. Otherwise, you may get eaten by a wolf... or cursed by a witch.... or turned into sea foam...
Rock Riffs & Red Shoes, we turn up the volume and let you, the listeners, help settle one of rock's biggest debates: AC/DC or Guns N' Roses—who truly reigns supreme? Then, things get a little existential as we try to figure out which day of the week is objectively the worst (spoiler: it's not just Monday). Plus, we lace up for Red Shoe Day in San Diego, celebrating a great cause and raising funds for the Ronald McDonald House. Rock on and give back—it's all in this episode!

The theatre director Emma Rice is renowned for her bold stagings of much-loved films and books including Brief Encounter, Wuthering Heights and the Red Shoes. For twenty years she worked as an actor, director, and eventually artistic director of Kneehigh, an international touring company based in Cornwall, known for its energetic productions with an inventive use of music and puppetry. In 2016, Emma became artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe, the reconstructed Elizabethan theatre on the south bank of the Thames - although her tenure there ended after two years following disagreements with the board. She has since founded her own touring theatre company, Wise Children, whose recent productions include The Buddha of Suburbia and Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest. Emma's musical passions include Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Mozart and Bach.
In this marathon episode of Baseless Conspiracies, Jon Herold and Zak “RedPill78” Paine go deep, like, Blackfriars Bridge-deep, into the tangled, bloodstained web of Vatican corruption, financial black ops, and historic conspiracies cloaked in red robes and even redder shoes. Sparked by the death of Pope Francis and the resignation of Klaus Schwab (both at age 88, the numerical symbol for “Heil Hitler”), Jon and Zak pull no punches as they unravel the historical and modern machinations of the Catholic Church. From the mysterious murder of “God's Banker” Roberto Calvi to the Vatican's documented money laundering for Nazis and fascists, they trace the legacy of corruption through the Vatican Bank, the Ustasha regime, and Operation Gladio. The hosts also break down the allegations against Cardinal Pell, was he a molester, a martyr, or a man framed for digging too close to the truth? Symbolism takes center stage with discussions on red shoes, rabbit imagery, and alleged adrenochrome connections, while they explore the Vatican's sovereign immunity, banking secrecy, and ties to ancient blood money. They even find time for a hilarious sidetrack into Zak's Nickelodeon days, Oak Island treasure hunts, and Vatican time machine rumors. This episode is part true crime, part theology, part international thriller, and 100% classic Baseless.

I feel so blessed to have been connected with my newest podcast guest Reva Pincusoff, former ballerina who trained with The Royal Ballet and danced with Pennsylvania Ballet (now Philadelphia Ballet), Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and Eliot Feld's ballet company, among others! It all started for her after watching The Red Shoes at 9 years old, when she asked her parents if she could take ballet class, and they said she could if she practiced everyday. Reva said, "Deal," and from then on, she was committed. Ballet companies were noticing Reva when she was still in high school, and she danced professionally from 17 to 35 years old. She also never got injured during that time, to which she credits her amazing training. Watch or listen to the full episode to learn more details about Reva's dance journey as well as what she did for her second career, which she was just as passionate about! When you draw up a business contract, lawyers try and predict the myriad things that could go wrong and plan strategies and remedies so if they do there are no surprises and you know what to do. Well, outside of business, real life is different. You can’t even imagine the number of things that can go – well, if not totally wrong, not as right as you’d like. When things go off the rails, or before they do, to try and head off the worst outcome, there are places and people to turn to. Like Stephanie's two guests on Out to Lunch. Rachael Hebert is Executive Director of The Red Shoes, a non-profit center for personal and spiritual growth with a mission of supporting women on their life’s journey. Located in Mid City here in Baton Rouge, The Red Shoes was founded in 1999 to celebrate, empower and nurture women and offers a space to explore and develop their inner life. Rachael is a licensed clinical social worker and who took over as Executive Director in 2024, but she has a long history of working with the organization dating back to 2007 when she worked as an administrative coordinator at the center. The experience inspired her to become a social worker and to establish STAR – the Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response, which has proven in the decade since to be a vital community resource. Rachael is also involved in other community nonprofits including community radio station WHYR. Greg Tiritilli is an addiction counselor here in Baton Rouge with years of experience helping individuals navigate the challenges of recovery. Greg is the Program Director for residential and long-term programs at St. Christopher's Addiction Wellness Center, where he plays a key role in shaping treatment strategies and supporting both clients and staff. Greg joined St. Christopher’s after previously working as an addiction counselor at The Recovery Center of Baton Rouge. Greg is a native of Dallas and a graduate of LSU who is now deeply rooted in the Baton Rouge community, balancing his professional dedication with a love for the outdoors, live music, and spending time with family and friends. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. This Week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Daniel back on the show as we discuss the 1985 comedy (?), The Man with One Red Shoe. Tom Hanks, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning. What could go wrong. This. This could go wrong. This movie is supposed to be a comedy, but it has few laughs. It's supposed to be spy thriller, but has no thrills and the spies are all generic garbage. We always have fun discussing these movies, even the bad ones, but this one kind of left us all feeling empty. We still laughed, but maybe not how the creators of this movie wanted us to. Enjoy the podcast.
Michelle is back again to continue our discussion of the beautiful films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. This time we look at perhaps P&P at their most exquisite, as we discuss how The Red Shoes, The Tales of Hoffmann and Bluebeard's Ghost all appeal to us, who aren't opera or ballet fans but who love a beautiful film. The big surprise for us was Bluebeard's Ghost, a short film for German TV that's rarely seen today. We tracked down a copy and found the film gorgeous in its minimalism - well, hey, listen to the pod to hear what we thought of it in detail!

RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews This week Vidar was reviewing a new version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Red Shoes by Playwright Nancy Harris at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Swan Theatre with description by Professional Audio Describers Ess Grange and Carolyn Smith. About The Red shoes: When an orphaned young woman is taken in by some local do-gooders, she is expected to be seen and not heard. Dazzled by a pair of beautiful shoes, she sees the chance to do and be so much more, but soon her feet betray her, taking her to places she does not wish to go. This Christmas, get up close to the magic as playwright Nancy Harris brings Hans Christian Andersen's dark fairy tale into the 21st century in the intimate surroundings of the Swan Theatre. Directed by Kimberley Rampersad (Associate Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, Canada) in her RSC debut, The Red Shoes is both wickedly funny and a cautionary tale of pride, vanity and how we all deserve to dance how we wish to dance. There is another audio described performance of the Red Shoes on Saturday 28 December at 1pm and for more details about this and other described performances at the RSC do visit the access pages of their website - https://www.rsc.org.uk/your-visit/access You will also find out more about access at the Royal Shakespeare Company by visiting the following pages of their website - https://www.rsc.org.uk/your-visit/access (Image shows RNIB logo. Dennis is joined via Zoom by Broadway veteran Hugh Panaro to talk about his album and cabaret show Man Without a Mask, which is playing in Los Angeles on December 5th at the Catalina Jazz Club. Hugh talks about making the leap to recording and doing his own cabaret show after years of appearing on Broadway and on the West End in shows like Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd and Phantom of the Opera, in which he logged over 2500 performances as the Phantom. In regards to that show, Hugh talks about the mask itself, what it's made of, how it's maintained and how he feels about it. He also talks about working on Phantom with Hal Prince and choreographer Gillian Lynne who gave him very explicit instructions on how to sex-up the song "Music of the Night." Hugh also talks about discovering he could sing after playing the organ in church and then finding a home in musical theater as a chubby, artsy kid who often got bullied in school. Other topics include: getting to tour Europe and share gelato with Barbra Streisand, appearing in the late 90's gay rom-com movie Broadway Damage, surviving Broadway flops like Lestat and The Red Shoes, meeting Dr. Ruth after a show, the healing power of music and how most people on Broadway are genuinely nice people...except for that one unnamed diva who literally slapped her dresser for giving her the wrong leg panty hose first.

The new documentary Made in England, featuring Martin Scorsese, prompts Michael, Jared, and Joe to discuss the films of directors Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, including The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, and particularly The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.
Thelma Schoonmaker has, for over five decades, been Martin Scorsese's cutting room collaborator. Having edited his first feature film in 1967, she has worked on every Scorsese movie since Raging Bull, including Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed, Wolf Of Wall Street, right up to his most recent features The Irishman and Killers Of The Flower Moon. As the widow of the legendary British filmmaker Michael Powell, she has also played a key role in the restoration of classic Powell and Pressburger films including The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus and A Matter Of Life And Death. Thelma Schoonmaker has won three Academy Awards, more than any other film editor. Thelma tells John Wilson how enrolling on a six week film making course as a young graduate in New York led to her meeting and helping Martin Scorsese edit a short film he was making. He then asked her to edit his 1967 feature film debut, Who's That Knocking at My Door and their partnership began in earnest. She recalls how she and Scorsese were part of the editing team on Michael Wadleigh's music festival documentary, Woodstock for which she received her first an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing - the first documentary ever to be nominated in that category. Thelma reveals the process of working with Scorsese in the cutting room and how, through him, she met her late husband Michael Powell, whose films with Emeric Pressburger, both she and Scorsese had so admired from childhood.Producer: Edwina PitmanArchive and music used: The Red Shoes, Powell & Pressburger, 1948 Who's That Knocking at My Door, Martin Scorsese, 1967 I Can't Explain, The Who, Live at Woodstock, 1969 See Me. Please rate & review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you listen to the show!--- APARTMENT 7A follows in 2024's tradition of independent directors helming prequels to successful horror franchises. We had THE FIRST OMEN and A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE. Now, Natalie Erika James takes the reins to ROSEMARY'S BABY, revealing the story preceding Roman Polanski's iconic 1968 movie. This story follows Terry Gionofrrio (Julia Garner), a New York dancer toughing her way through a marathon of auditions to try and land work. It's already difficult to stand out in New York, but doing so right after sustaining a severe foot injury? Impossible.Coping using pain pills, Terry goes on a bender, and after one particularly bad night, is scooped off the street by the wealthy, doting Castavets - Minnie (Dianne Weist) and Roman (Kevin McNally). The childless couple, drawn to the struggling artist, become her benefactors, offering her a gorgeous apartment in the opulent Bramford building: rent-free. (Daniel, stop drooling. You're embarassing yourself.)But as the days and weeks pass, with more pain pills, impossible auditions, and a one-night experience of which Terry can't quite place the details regarding how she ended up in another's bed, she encounters these bizarre nightmares, hallucinatory and threatening in scope. The once high ceilings of her apartment appear to slowly shrink in size. She swears she sees presences lurking round every corner. And the Castavets? They're a bit too friendly, a bit too doting, a bit too...possessive.Natalie Erika James' movie is surreal, theatrical. At times, I'd dare even say, pulpy. The camera bobs and weaves through musical sequences and hallucinations, borrowing from films such as THE RED SHOES and ALL THAT JAZZ. But the sinister beating heart lies in the real-life horror befalling Terry, one about bodily autonomy, sexual assault and an obsession for success that grows to prevail over one's own wellbeing. This grounds the movie so bitterly that I find the surrounding silliness to often be a welcome tonal reprieve from an otherwise all-too-real nightmare. Mix all this with rich, textural photography, a color palette of decadent chestnuts, mustards and moss greens & costumes that teleport me to 1960s New York. The result's a hazy, tense thriller that breathes new life into a nearly 60-year-old franchise, posing James as an exciting new voice in horror.---Follow The Movies on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod and Facebook: The MoviesCredit Song: "Be My Baby"- The Ronettes

Do you know about "Red Shoe Diaries"? I mean there's a TV show that went a while, but also a movie that kicked it off. I never thought about it much, but i'm pretty sure "You Must Remember This" and their erotic 80's and 90's series is what caused this podcast. They cover this here movie pretty extensively and we were looking for our first movie and here we are. Is it good? Is it hot? Are they all hotties? Are you into girls growling at their loving dog? Or dirt bike muggers? There's so many things happening in here. We'll tell you if it took us to the bone zone, but it's up to you to decide if it gets that hot hot heat cooking for you.

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese first encountered the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger when he was a child, sitting in front of the family TV. When their famous logo came up on screen, Scorsese says, “You knew you were in for fantasy, wonder, magic - real film magic.” In the documentary film, Made in England, The Films of Powell & Pressburger, director David Hinton, with the help of Scorses tells the story of his own lifelong love-affair with their movies, including The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp, Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann. Drawing on a rich array of archive material, Hinton explores in full the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger - two romantics and idealists, who thrived in the face of adversity during World War II but were eventually brought low by the film industry of the 1950's. Scorsese celebrates their ability to create “subversive commercial movies” and describes how deeply their films have influenced his own work. Director David Hinton (Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men, Strange Fish) joins us to talk about how long it took this project to be completed, working with Scorsese and his role as the film's guide through their work, Scorsese's personal connection to Michael Powell and the impact their work continues to have on filmmakers. “Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger” had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, where it received rave reviews for delving into the films and careers of two of the greatest storytellers the medium as ever known: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. From “Black Narcissus” to “The Red Shoes,” to “A Matter of Life and Death,” to “The Tales of Hoffmann,” their collaboration inspired a generation and is still revered for their daring artistry to this day. Director David Hinton and Executive Producer Thelma Schoonmaker (and Powell's widow wife) were both kind enough to spend a few minutes answering questions about the documentary, which is now playing at Quad Cinema in New York City and will open in Los Angeles at the Landmark's Nuart Theater on July 26th with a national rollout to occur afterward. Endlessly fascinating, dark and bright, The Red Shoes (1948) employs every branch of the cinematic arts to sweep the audience off its feet, invigorated by the transcendence of art itself, only to leave them with troubling questions. Representing the climax of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's celebrated run of six exceptional feature films, the film remains a beloved, if unsettling and often divisive, classic. Pamela Hutchinson's study of the film, published by Bloomsbury in 2023, examines its breathtaking use of Technicolor, music, choreography, editing and art direction at the zenith of Powell and Pressburger's capacity for 'composed cinema'. Through a close reading of key scenes, particularly the film's famous extended ballet sequence, she considers the unconventional use of ballet as uncanny spectacle and the feminist implications of the central story of female sacrifice. Hutchinson goes on to consider the film's lasting and wide-reaching influence, tracing its impact on the film musical genre and horror cinema, with filmmakers such as Joanna Hogg, Sally Potter, Martin Scorsese and Brian De Palma having cited the film as an inspiration. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Nadeem jumped at the opportunity to pick a movie that starts with "R" and went with the 1948 classic, "The Red Shoes" for the next movie review. Marty, Steven and Mita and are all proud.
One last time into the fray! We have done it. We are now surely the internet's best and most complete resource for the first 2 seasons of 90's cable erotica Red Shoe Diaries. David Duchovny and Stella are back to read another letter from a Parisienne ad executive and her old flame / impossible to work with auteur commercial director. We have (surprise) red shoes in an episode for the first time in forever. There are random elevator shots, no crazy bedroom sets, stair sex, and a very low abdomen shot of our lead actor for the ladies. Come along for one last ride before we get back into movies. Come for the uneven amount of time our lead actress's right nipple has compared to the left, but stay for the stubbled Jordan Padalecki lookalike lead actor tipping over chairs and screaming "Touch Me!"
Join us as we continue what has to be the most exhaustive deep dive of the nineties erotica for women cable show Red Shoe Diaries. We are winding down this season hopefully to get back to some movies just like David Duchovny. In Alphabet Girl we have a young model in a not terribly torrid affair with her famous photographer. There is not really a love triangle with his young assistant. Mostly everybody gives each other the space and time they need to grow, except for that one time where the photographer breaks into the assistant's house and they wrestle on top of a huge painting. We finally get an episode that is basically what Zack was staying up late to watch all those years ago. We have really beautiful sweaty naked people in well lit scenes having sex for an extended period of time. At this point though, we are missing a little bit of the wackadoo. That being said, there is a race on a bedroom catwalk between someone on roller blades and a bicycle, so there is that.

This week's episode is Part 2 of my conversation with filmmaker and ceramicist Madelynn De La Rosa. It's been 3 years since she came over to record last and this conversation centered around all she learned in the last year. Recorded just before the holidays, she talks about how some of the biggest changes she's made in her life have begun as New Year's resolutions. In this second half, we talk about: how internal work can lead to external life changes, fear of being ordinary, her film recs, q&a from listeners, and more. If you missed Part 1, we discussed shadow work, learning to be gentler on yourself, gene keys, Abraham Hicks, spiritual principles that have helped us, and learning to not be too dogmatic about any of it.
