What was the real story behind the BBC series Dope Girls? In this episode of Oh What a Lovely Podcast, we dive into the world of Soho's underground nightlife in the 1920s, as seen in the BBC's new drama Dope Girls. The series takes inspiration from Marek Kohn's book Dope Girls: The Birth of the British Drug Underground and brings to life the turbulent years after the First World War, when jazz clubs, crime, and vice flourished in London. Joining us to separate fact from fiction is Professor Matthew Houlbrook, a leading historian of 20th-century Britain. We explore the real figures and stories behind Dope Girls, the shifting social landscape of post-war Britain, and how the show reflects the era's struggles with gender, crime, and morality. Welcome to Episode 230 where we talk about some books. As this is another tenth episode, we are also hosting a giveaway! One lucky newsletter subscriber will win a paperback copy of our second quarter readalong pick, THE GOOD HOUSE by Tananarive Due. Newsletter subscribers are automatically entered to win our recurring tenth episode giveaways. Chris unexpectedly read the surprise hot book of the season, CARELESS PEOPLE: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism by Sarah Wynn-Williams, and is telling everyone to believe the hype. She also read THE EXTENDED MIND: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain by Annie Murphy Paul, and devoured WOMAN, EATING: A Literary Vampire Novel by Claire Kohda. Emily read two novels that have an unexpected connection, MURDER UNDER HER SKIN: A Pentecost and Parker Mystery by Stephen Spotswood and THE GHOSTWRITER by Julia Clark. She also read two less murdery novels, TELL ME EVERYTHING by Elizabeth Strout and TILDA IS VISIBLE by Jane Tara. One of these she loved and the other was a bit of a departure for a well-loved writer. We discuss the third short ghost story – “The Haunted and the Haunters; Or, The House and the Brain by Edward Bulwer Lytton – in THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: From Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce. This one didn't grab us like the last one (pun intended) but we can see how it contributes to the haunted house tradition. In Biblio Adventures, Chris made a guest appearance on Shawn Breathes Books where they discussed FINGERSMITH by Sarah Waters; it is ready for viewing on his BookTube channel. Emily was in Colorado visiting new grandbaby #2, and got to visit two local bookstores: White River Books in Carbondale and Alpenglow Books and Gifts in Glenwood Springs. During a long layover in O'Hare, she also visited several Barbara's Bookstores in the airport. As always, there is more in this episode than we can highlight here, like upcoming reads and jaunts (e.g., THE CAT'S MEOW: How Cats Evolved from the Savanna to Your Sofa by Jonathan Losos, All CT Reads with author Monica Wood, and the Willa Cather Spring Conference). We were so happy to be back together talking about books across the table! We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Happy Reading! https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2025/episode230

Welcome to Episode 227, featuring an author spotlight with Megan Marshall discussing her new collection of essays, After Lives: On Biography and the Mysteries of the Human Heart. Megan is a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer who turns her writerly gaze and historical imagination on her own life, her family and friends, and the “after lives” of her biographical subjects. After Lives publishes the day this episode drops–purchase your copy post-haste or request it at your library. We have been enjoying a “real” New England winter this season, which has kept us hunkered down and reading on our respective couches. The books in our Just Read segment are: A New Home, Who Will Follow? by Caroline Kirkland The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny Fortune Favors the Dead by Stephen Spottswood How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith by Mariann Edgar Budde My Life in France by Julia Child and Alex Prud'homme Finlay Donovan Digs Her Own Grave by Elle Cosimano (release date 3/4/25) The Vanishing Kind by Alice Henderson (release date 3/4/25) I'll Be Right Here by Amy Bloom (release date 6/24/25) In short stories, we discuss “The Old Nurse's Story” by Elizabeth Gaskell, the first story in The Penguin Book of Ghost Stories: From Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce, which we will be reading throughout 2025 for our year of reading Ghost Stories. Chris also read the ghost story The Inn by Guy De Maupassant. We did get out and about for a Biblio Adventure to the New York Society Library to see a reading of Lord Byron's Manfred by The New Relic Theatre. While there we also watched a virtual event via the Yale Program for the Study of Antisemitism featuring Ruth Franklin in conversation about her new book The Many Lives of Anne Frank. And we had two couch biblio adventures. Emily watched the film The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse based on the book by Charlie Mackesy, and Chris participated in the Women's Prize Book Club with Sarah Waters in conversation with Simon Savidge about her novel Fingersmith. Of course, we also talk about what we're currently reading, hope to read, upcoming jaunts, Simon & Schuster's news about book blurbs, and more. There's a whole lot of yuck in the world now, and we are grateful for good books and bookish friends. Thank you, friends, for listening and connecting with us on social media, email, or Zoom. We wish you lots of Happy Reading! https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2025/episode227

We are thrilled to feature Dr. Pamela D. Toler who joined us to talk about her new book, THE DRAGON FROM CHICAGO: THE UNTOLD STORY OF AN AMERICAN REPORTER IN NAZI GERMANY. In a time when women were a rarity in the field, Sigrid Schultz was a print and broadcast journalist and the Chicago Tribune's Berlin office bureau chief. She covered news from Europe and Germany from WWI through WWII and post-war years. Toler's writing is accessible, and her subject's life & work are amazing. Having read every byline that Schultz wrote, Toler was able to offer insights about how totalitarian governments gain power making this history book a must-read for those concerned about our present political climate. Before we get into our regular segments, we recap our 2024 reading intentions and talk about reading intentions for 2025. We like “intention” because it implies a direction or focus rather than a specific goal. We do, however, mention some specific titles and authors, so perhaps those could be considered goals. Anyway, the point is we don't want to tie ourselves up in knots if our reading lives take unexpected but exciting twists and turns. What are your reading intentions for the New Year? Emily read two short stories from her Hingston and Olson Advent Calendar, “In the Stacks” by Robin Sloan and “The Hookup” by Katherine Heiny. She also discusses WE ALL WANT IMPOSSIBLE THINGS by Catherine Newman, CHECK, PLEASE! BOOK 1: #HOCKEY by Ngozi Ukazu, and LITTLE GREAT ISLAND by Kate Woodworth (not out until May). Chris shares her newfound love for an 1848 classic of Victorian Literature, THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL by Anne Brontë. She also revisits an old favorite, FINGERSMITH by Sarah Waters, which she listened to on audio. We also share two exciting reading projects hosted by listeners, what we're currently reading, (couch) Biblio Adventures, and more. Thank you so much for listening. We hope you enjoy this episode and wish you lots of Happy Reading!

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're diving into the captivating and intricately plotted world of The Handmaiden, a 2016 psychological thriller directed by Park Chan-wook. This South Korean film, inspired by the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, is a masterclass in storytelling, visual aesthetics, and suspense.A Tale of Deceit and Desire Set in 1930s Korea during the Japanese occupation, The Handmaiden tells the story of a young Korean woman, Sook-hee, who is hired as a handmaiden to a wealthy Japanese heiress, Lady Hideko. However, Sook-hee's employment is part of an elaborate scheme concocted by a con man named Count Fujiwara. His plan: for Sook-hee to help him seduce Lady Hideko so he can marry her, commit her to an asylum, and steal her wealth.Layers Upon Layers As the narrative unfolds, it becomes a mesmerizing tale of double-crosses, sexual awakening, and shifting loyalties. The story is presented in three parts, each from a different character's perspective, which gradually reveals the depths of deception and the complexities of the characters' relationships. This structure keeps the viewer guessing and reevaluating everything they know about the characters and their motives. Why It Stands OutVisual Storytelling: Park Chan-wook's direction is visually stunning. Every frame is meticulously crafted, combining exquisite costume and set designs with a vibrant color palette that enhances the sensual and suspenseful atmosphere of the film.Complex Characters: The characters in The Handmaiden are richly developed, with motivations that are both hidden and explicit. This complexity adds layers to the narrative, making the character dynamics engrossing and the plot twists more impactful.Erotic Elements: The film incorporates strong erotic themes that are integral to the plot and character development. These elements are handled with artistry and contribute significantly to the film's exploration of freedom, power, and identity. At its core, The Handmaiden explores themes of manipulation and liberation. It delves into the ways individuals manipulate each other for personal gain, but also how characters can break free from societal and personal oppression. The film challenges traditional notions of power and autonomy, particularly in relation to gender and sexuality. For fans of psychological thrillers, historical dramas, and beautifully crafted cinema, The Handmaiden is a must-watch. Its ability to blend genre elements with a profound exploration of human desires and deceptions makes it a standout film that engages the mind and the senses.Join us as we unravel the intricate web of The Handmaiden, exploring its narrative complexities, stunning aesthetics, and the provocative questions it raises about love, betrayal, and freedom. Whether you're discovering it for the first time or revisiting this modern classic, there's plenty to uncover in this thrilling cinematic journey.

As of about mid-July, she didn't have any voice, and they hoped to correct that. On her last day of that radiation, she also had a PleureX cathetered installed in her right lung to allow regular at-home drainage to keep that pressure off her lung. The day after that- Dad and I tested positive for Covid and by Monday Mom had too. Thankfully Dad and I had only mild symptoms and Mom had none- which was a blessing because the insertion of that port left her riddled with pain for days. Now she's coming out of that but starting a new chemo. We're hopeful that this will take away some of her pain and its already meant she doesn't need her lung drained as frequently. Hoping September will be a better month for her than the last couple.   Ask Me Anything   NDoyle asks: What has been your favorite item you've made this year and why? Also very grateful that my brother who was on vacation in Virginia just as we came down with Covid, ended up having a bicycle accident that left him with bruises all over and a broken rib- but is going to be OK. I made everyone promise we'd all stay out of the hospital for one full week! Visits with my cousin Jenny and her daughter Vera who often come over to see my Mom. Weekend pool time, especially with our youngest niece and nephew who are absolute fishies! My dear friend Nathan (only a couple years older than me) had a successful heart and kidney transplant only 1 day apart from each other but is recovering well. Our family all bought t-shirts and made donations to help his family and got a great photo to send him poolside one afternoon! My Mom wanted to get eyelash extensions so she, my cousin Jenny and I all went and it was a lovely experience. Dan and I picked up my grandmother and we all went to my cousin Nancy's Surprise 60th birthday. Mom and Gram both had a great day that. Beautiful sunny poolday with all the kiddos swimming, I caught up with many of my cousins who I don't get to see all the time, learned there's another new baby coming in January and enjoyed fresh pizza from a woodfired oven. We also sang to my grandmother. From there, we headed to Terri's Graduation Party. She runs the dancing school where I met Kris & Megg, two of my best friends who have 5 of our niblings. Dan's younger brother Dave played in the band, the kids all played together. We got to see Terri's brother who came up from FL, and Conor, Carly and baby Miles after they were in Nantucket for a couple weeks. Dinner & Les Mis with Kris, Aila and Megg. At Mom's chemo treatment, we got to see my friend Waveney who was my officemate in my first job at the hospital 22 years ago and her son, Tighe, checked us in at the Infusion Clinic. As soon as I said hello, his whole face lit up with a smile and he came around and immediately hugged us all. It was pure joy! He'll be back off to college soon. We hosted a 90th birthday party for my grandmother at The Tavern in her assisted living facility. I put together all sorts of cool photo decorations & used some of her old picture frames for the tables and guests could take them as favors. Dan DJed, and my Dad, our friend Sharon & cousin Susan prepared the food) and the kiddos all acted as bartenders. Hattie even went around and took photos. All of the joy and hope coming out of Democratic party with coverage of the DNC. It feels great to have a candidate I'm truly joyful about supporting. A quieter weekend- getting ready for my friend Marta to arrive from Barcelona (if I'm a bit MIA that's why)   Quote of the Week One evening in August, you have an errand outdoors, and all of a sudden, it's pitch-black. Fingersmith by Sarah Waters is a Victorian crime novel centered around two young women: Susan Trinder, who grew up in a house of thieves, and Maud Lilly, a lady who is trapped by her uncle in a macabre house called Briar, and compelled to work for him as a secretary. When it was initially published in 2002, Fingersmith made waves for its central lesbian relationship, as well as its shocking twist in the second act. The book was critically lauded: shortlisted for both the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize, launching Sarah Waters into literary stardom. Through popular adaptations like 2005's BBC miniseries directed by Aisling Walsh, and 2016's The Handmaiden, directed by Park Chan Wook, the story of Fingersmith has found a broader audience, and is widely beloved to this day.Support us on our Patreon!Visit our website for transcripts and show notes: reformedrakes.comFollow us on social media:Twitter: @reformedrakesInstagram: @reformedrakesBeth's TikTokChels' TikTokEmma's TikTokChels' SubstackEmma's SubstackThank you for listening!

Historical fiction author, Jacquie Bloese draws her inspiration from atmospheric locations with intriguing histories, and people – both real and imaginary – whose stories are calling out to be told. Her latest release, The Golden Hour, set in Victorian Brighton is a compelling and deeply atmospheric read. In this fascinating episode, Jacquie discuses the inspiration for her second novel, the challenges of researching the Victorian age and growing up in Guernsey, the island which inspired her debut novel, The French House,_________________________________________________________________________________________In the genteel squares of late-Victorian Brighton, Ellen and Reynold Harper - twins, companions, colleagues - ply their trade as portrait photographers. But at the golden hour, the models arrive to pose for the lucrative - and illicit - photographs that really keep the Harpers' business afloat. This is the other, shadowy world of the city: a world of erotic tableaux, boundary-crossing music hall performers, and the sinister figure of the local gangster, the Croc. When Ellen is drawn into the orbit of unhappy newly-wed Clementine, she finds herself torn between loyalty to her brother, her dangerous attraction to new model, Lily, and her burgeoning friendship with Clem. And as the two worlds of Brighton collide, the three women discover that there is only a knife edge between the promise of freedom, and the threat of ruin . . .Atmospheric, sensual and powerfully moving, The Golden Hour is a spellbinding portrait of three women determined to find their freedom - perfect for fans of Sarah Waters, The Doll Factory and The Essex Serpent.

Welcome to the show, Adrienne. It's great to have you with us. Adrienne Chinn: Thank you so much, Jenny. I'm delighted to be here. Jenny Wheeler: You've made a name for yourself as the author of beautifully crafted historical fiction. Not to say that it doesn't have a lot of action as well, but you're very much known for the beauty of your locations, the sensory detail. And that's often more associated with standalone books and you have done some standalones, but you're now engaged in this series, with Book #2 recently published. Tell us, how did you translate from doing standalones to your Fry Sisters project? Adrienne Chinn: It has been a learning curve for me, I have to say, but I've always been really fascinated about women's development and women's lives from the first 20th century. I felt that required more than one book to do it properly. I was very much inspired by some of the stories of my great aunts, and my grandmother. I decided to develop a series of four books starting in 1913 and covering the First World War in the first book, Love in a Time of War. And then the second book, as you said, which has just come out, The Paris Sister, set in the 1920s.

If 18-year-old Sam was here now, today's episode would be a real pinch-me moment. Back in the mid-80s, I was a student in Birmingham when I first stumbled upon the dark green spine that was the hallmark of a newish publisher called Virago. It started with one book in particular – The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood. Reading that book changed my life, as I don't doubt many Virago books have done for many people over the years.Virago launched 50 years ago this month and, for much of that time, my guest, Lennie Goodings, was at the heart of things. Lennie joined virago in 1978 as part-time office slave. Rose to Publisher and is now Chair. Lennie has published a host of influential writers including Atwood, Angela Carter, Sarah Waters, Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde and many more. She has also, latterly, become a much needed advocate for the rights of older women in the workplace.I met Lennie at home in North London to talk about 50 years of feminism and publishing books by and for women, the moment she realised her life didn't have to be defined by who she married and where she got her drive to make a difference. We also discussed the older women who've shaped her, the importance of bringing your A-game and why ageism is the next frontline.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including A Bite of the Apple by Lennie Goodings and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. Martin Nathan and Tabitha Potts interview Tracey Rose Peyton about her beautiful and heart-breaking debut novel, Night Wherever We Go, published by The Borough Press. Night Wherever We Go is an intimate look at the domestic lives of enslaved women in 1800s America, and an evocative meditation on resistance and autonomy, on love and transcendence and the bonds of female friendship in the darkest of circumstances. It tells the tale of six women who are forced to become impregnated by their owners but decide to take matters into their own hands to prevent this from happening. Review by Sarah Waters - ‘a haunting evocation of the routine brutalities of slavery that is also a powerful celebration of friendship, community, resilience and rebellion. A hugely impressive debut.'  Tracey Rose Peyton also reads from her novel for us. This episode was produced by Martin Nathan. Martin Nathan has worked as a labourer, showman, pancake chef, fire technician, and railway engineer. His short fiction has been published by Tangent Press, HCE and Grist and his poetry has appeared in Finished Creatures, Erbacce and Aesthetica. His novel – A Place of Safety – is published by Salt Publishing. In 2020 he was shortlisted for the Woodward International Playwriting Prize and the Nick Darke Award.

To this day, the global governing elites have never apologized for what they've done to a generation of children. Today, I'm joined by Sarah Waters of the HART Group (health advisory and recovery team) in the U.K. to survey the emotional, mental, and physical damage to children across the globe. Waters, a psychotherapist who specializes in the effects of abuse, neglect, and childhood trauma, explains how the culture of fear and trauma has affected children in ways we will be dealing with for years to come. Masks are even more damaging than you think. I also delve into the fact that the economic issues are downstream from the transhumanism created by the very same cause – COVID authoritarianism. Finally, I share a survey that reveals a shocking level of vaccine injury, particularly among youngsters.  Learn more about your ad choices. In this week's episode, Alice and Helen discuss 2008 film Affinity, an adaptation of the Sarah Waters novel of the same name from 1999. Affinity is an atmospheric tale of Victorian crime and spiritualism, in which Margaret Prior (Anna Madeley), a wealthy 'lady visitor' to Millbank Prison becomes fascinated by inmate Selina Dawes (Zoe Tapper), a disgraced spiritual medium. In this installment of our Murder Girls series, we talk about historical fiction's fascination with queer women criminals, modern depictions of unjust historical prison systems, the problems of adapting huge Neo-Victorian novels, the material underpinnings of the spiritualist movement - and whether the metaphysical realm belongs to the girls and the gays. Meet Gabriela Blandy Gabriela Blandy is a fully qualified Life Coach and NLP Practitioner. She is a personal and professional development expert with over fifteen years' experience working with writers, creatives, and entrepreneurs. She has also trained in the Shamanic Medicine Wheel with The Spirit of the Inca. Gabriela has been awarded the Royal Society of Literature V S Pritchett Prize and has a Masters in Creative Writing with Distinction. Her writing has been published in various books and journals, including The Mechanics Institute Review and The London Magazine. She has also been published alongside Sarah Waters and Daphne du Maurier in Virago's collection of ghostly tales, 'Something was There'. Gabriela has hosted hundreds of literary events, both in London at City University and the bar at RADA and The John Osborne Arvon Centre, and has spoken on the Creative Writing Masters Programs at Oxford University, UEA, Warwick, Birkbeck, and Guildford.   Stopping the Hustle & Grind I had the honor and pleasure of coaching and working with Gabriela about a year ago as she wanted to get off the incessant grind and hustle train and learn to hear her inner voice and deeper wisdom. She felt exhausted, working weekends without time off, noticing a continuous cycle of comparison and competition. While successful on the outside, Gabriela wanted to stop the crazy burnout and connect back to her passion and true purpose. She was afraid of losing momentum but knew where this kind of continued overworking and overwhelm would lead. Her soul was asking for more -- more nature, more nurture, and more deep connection.    Listen to Your Soul Gabriela Blandy's soul was asking for a new way of doing business, of self-expression, and a way to feel passionate and fulfilled that wasn't at the expense of her mental and physical wellbeing. Gabriela talked about the shift that happened when she decided to invest in her soul and start coaching together. She realized that she had just bought something for her soul rather than her ego or fear. What ensued over the next year was miraculous to guide and observe. She woke up to a way of being so many of us find ourselves paralyzed by -- the constant hustle and rushing around that has you spreading butter on your toast while scrolling through text messages, checking your calendar and trying to take a photo here and there for a decent social media post. She started to see the patterns of being spread thin and feeling disconnected from any sense of presence or deeper purpose.   Detoxing Your Lifestyle What came next was a surprise to Gabriela, and she shares how the two questions she asked herself led to a total shift in her business and life. Driven to spend more time in nature and to detox her lifestyle from screens and constant scrolling, Gabriela took her first five-day excursion into the forest. She asked herself, 'Who am I? and What is my purpose?' What followed surprised and delighted her. It was not a response she had heard before and certainly wasn't attainable while being mired down in emails, zoom meetings, and workaholism. She felt a deep knowing that she was meant to spend more time in the forest and that something important was shifting within her that would become the new bedrock for her career and purpose. Forest trips became Gabriela's new way of unplugging, and soon she found wisdom being channeled from her encounter with the trees and nature that helped to rewire her nervous system and brain. It was a detox on all levels instigated by the forest.    Trusting Your Inner Guidance No Matter What  Gabriela Blandy shares the power of learning to trust her inner guidance and started to see the ripple effect of this positive change in all of her relationships and business. The greater message of how to listen to your your soul she learned from the forest. Today, her business is not only thriving in new ways, but because she has followed her intuition and wisdom from the forest, she has created an amazing community that taps into greater aspects of creativity in writing, speaking, coaching, and living. She continues to bring her clients into the forest and finally feels like she is living a life that is congruent with her heart, purpose, and soul's greatest desires.   To learn more about Gabriela and her beautiful offerings, go to https://gabrielablandy.org,   Final Thoughts Gabriela Blandy was able to tune into her intuition and feel what she was missing in her life. More importantly, she was able to take action and fill the gap that the busyness of the world was taking away from her. She invites all of you to listen to your soul and see what you can give back to it starting today.    Looking To Help Other Empaths Design Their Best Life? Sarah Waters racy Victorian picaresque, Tipping the Velvet, was published in 1998, and garnered huge attention and praise. It was adapted by the BBC  in 2002, a genuine television event that coincided with the publication of her third novel, Fingersmith, a heart-stopping gothic thriller — again with a lesbian couple at its center. Fingersmith was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, the first of three novels to achieve the distinction, the others being The Night Watch and The Little Stranger, a spine chiller that Stephen King anointed the best book he read in 2009. She has said: It's interesting that I've become known as a feminist writer; we tend to think of feminism as being about women breaking out of old models, and finding new ways of living but I'm really much more drawn to writing about the limitations on women's lives, because I think I'm interested in the fact that most people in life do feel rather limited and there is something rather tragic about the way in which we don't really realize our great hopes and desires. That's the sort of stuff that draws me as a writer more than anything else.”
