On the twenty-seventh night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing GRETEL & HANSEL (2020), from director Osgood Perkins, the film has a screenplay by Rob Hayes based on the Grimm fairy tale. Separated from their desperate mother, teenage Gretel (Sophia Lillis) leads her younger brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey) through a desolate, distant fairytale countryside in a desperate search for food and work. After a long journey, the siblings are lured by the scent of a lavish feast to a strange, black-gabled house in the forest, home to the seemingly kind but unsettling woman (Alice Krige). As Gretel's protective instincts clash with the woman's manipulative attempts to mentor her in burgeoning dark powers, the siblings begin to uncover the chilling and sinister secrets of the seemingly bottomless pantry and their host's true nature. The film clocks in at 1 h and 27 m, is rated PG-13 and we caught it on the Hoopla app but you can find it on Prime Video, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.#SupportYourLocalLibrary @HooplaDigital #GretelAndHansel #JacobGrimm #WilhelmGrimm #RobHayes #OsgoodPerkins #SophiaLillis #Gretel #SamuelLeakey #Hansel #AliceKrige #Witch #JessicaDeGouw #Witch #FionaOShaughnessy #Mother #CharlesBabalola #TheHunter #GiuliaDoherty #BeautifulChild #FairyTale #DarkFantasy #FolkHorror #WitchHorror #Fantasy #Thriller #Mystery #Horror @Pluto @RokuUS @Tubi @PrimeVideo #31DaysToHalloween #SpookySeason #Day27 #FridayFamilyFilmNight And in #SpookySeason don't forget to use your powers for good - support our friend KT as she raises funds for the good folks at St. Jude's - any little bit helps and is whole heartedly appreciated by the families who rely on St. Jude's @stjudehttps://fundraising.stjude.org/goto/thewolfmansOpening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library
Iconic horror writer Stephen King has reimagined a classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale: “Hansel and Gretel.” A major inspiration behind his iteration of the tale came from illustrations of the story by the late Maurice Sendak, best known for his work on “Where the Wild Things Are.”King said he's been writing about brave kids like Hansel and Gretel his entire career, and joins us to talk more about his version of “Hansel and Gretel” and the future of his writing career.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

#WDRadio WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 28, 2025: Giant footprints at 20,000 feet, ancient Tibetan warnings, and mysterious disappearances in the mountains—the Yeti isn't just a legend. There are centuries of encounters from the Himalayas to Siberia, including evidence that made even skeptics into believers, with connections to unexplained phenomena that challenges everything we thought we knew about the Abominable Snowman.==========HOUR ONE: Is it possible that in 1927 we picked up signals from an artificial satellite sent to our planet by an extraterrestrial intelligence? Some believe the evidence is overwhelming. (Mystery of the Alien Satellite) *** When a great famine struck Europe in 1314, mothers abandoned their children and in some cases, even ate them. Could this be the gruesome beginnings of the story we know as Hansel and Gretel? (The Grimm Reality Behind Hansel and Gretel) *** But first… I doubt there's a single person over the age of twelve living in the modernized world that hasn't at least heard of Bigfoot. A large portion of them have probably heard it's other name – Sasquatch – as well. But far fewer are familiar with his even more reclusive Siberian cousin: the Russian Bigfoot that's we've come to know as the Yeti, or more fondly… the Abominable Snowman. We'll begin with that story! (Why They Call This Snowman Abominable)==========HOUR TWO: Ever heard of Shadrack Ireland? No, it's not a place – it's a person, actually. A preacher – and one of the most bizarre religious leaders ever to walk the soil of New England. And as strange as his religious practices and teachings were – his death was just as crazy. (The Perfect Man) *** Lisa woke up to find her boyfriend staring at her. When she asked him what was wrong, he replied, “I'm going to kill you and drink your blood.” Is it possible that the film, “Interview With The Vampire” made Daniel Sterlin turn into a real-life bloodthirsty monster? (Interview With The Wannabee Vampire) *** Gerald Foos built a secret passageway in his motel – not to smuggle drugs or store weapons, but so he could spy on his motel guests having sex. And it gets even creepier than that. (Peeping Tom Motel) *** A family loses two children by apparent poisoning… and then the mother's death two months later under the same mysterious circumstances. Obviously there was a murderer living amongst the family, or somewhere in the town. Wasn't there? (The Mystery of the Garrett Family's Tragic Deaths)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: In 1938, stories of a "killer ghost" began to be told in eastern Kentucky. Even though no one ever saw this malevolent apparition, it was said to have caused five very similar and unexplained deaths. Cassie and Daurie watched the 2002 movie version of Hansel and Gretel, featuring Jacob Smith, Taylor Momsen, Howie Mandel, Alana Austin, Delta Burke, Tom Arnold, and Lynn Redgrave to answer the age old question: does it deserve that 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes? And the verdict is, yes. Yes, it really does. We watched it so you don't have to; all you have to do is listen to our discussion on how this take went so deeply wrong -- from poorly used framing devices to unnecessary character additions to incredibly weak attempts to feel modern and hip that only served to give the movie the shelf life of cottage cheese. In this powerful episode, Chris sits down with Hansel Canady, owner of Hancan Barbershop and the official barber for the Green Bay Packers—including head coach Matt LaFleur and many of the team's biggest stars. But Hansel's journey is about so much more than fresh fades and celebrity clients. Hansel opens up about his childhood in Chicago, including the traumatic experience of being jumped and beaten so badly he was put into a coma. He shares the challenges of moving to Green Bay, facing racism in school and the community, and the struggles that led him down a path of selling drugs and serving prison time. This episode dives deep into Hansel's story of resilience—finding his first job as a felon at a gas station, graduating from beauty school, and building his business from the ground up by handing out business cards to every customer who walked through the door. Hansel's raw honesty and determination will inspire anyone who's ever faced adversity or dreamed of a second chance. Tune in for an unforgettable conversation about redemption, hustle, and the power of believing in yourself—no matter where you start.
Cassie and Daurie give you two discussions for the price of one, as their exploration of A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz reveals a novel with Hansel and Gretel as the main characters, but a novel that isn't really a retelling of that classic story. So they pull in an old favorite and also look at how Hansel and Gretel was incorporated into Transformed: The Perils of the Frog Prince by Megan Morrison. They discuss what common elements tie all these stories together and what they have to do with the Oregon Trail.Spoilers for the two novels listed above and also Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie a little bit. In this episode, Geoff and Katrina talk about the upcoming "posthumous partnering" of Stephen King and Maurice Sendak in a children's book of Hansel and Gretel in September. The news of this collaboration reminded Katrina of another book Maurice Sendak did with a dead partner, Wilhelm Grimm. In the 1800's before the Grimm Brothers were a household name, Wilhelm penned a letter to Mili, which contained a tale. Over a hundred and fifty years later, that letter was sold at auction and then turned into a book with the art of Maurice Sendak. Katrina retells the tale found in Dear Mili and then shows how the tale contains elements from three different stories found in the broader Brother's Grimm collection. Geoff and Katrina discuss how this letter might be a beautiful moment where Wilhelm Grimm stopped writing for a broader audience, and instead, wrote for an audience of one. Dear Mili.

Come inside, children!Today, to start a new week with a bang, we present an all-time Hall of Fame fairytale: Hansel and Gretel. If you listened to Little Thumb last week, note how this time it's the father who is sympathetic instead of the mother; also, while 'Little Thumb' encountered a masculine flesh-eating other, this week it's a feminine one. They're partner tales - but not the same one. Why?Also, really sorry about the slight buzz on Eleanor's vocal. We've bought some new microphone cables, so it hopefully won't happen again! If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free. Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory. The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastThree Ravens is a myth and folklore podcast hosted by Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux.In each Monday episode we explore a historic county, digging into heritage, folklore and traditions, then we tell a new version of a legend from that county. It's time to bid another farewell to the ultimate storyteller's tale and turn to a pair of siblings getting lost in the woods and finding a house of questionable building materials. Cassie and Laura start us off with our final thoughts on The Arabian Nights and how its walking red flag was handled overall. Then Cassie and Daurie begin a journey into an apparently overlooked classic, Hansel and Gretel. We talk through the plot of the story and the many questions it brings up, then we reveal the criteria we'll be using and which retellings we'll be talking about throughout the month.Join our community! In this narrative analysis, Dr. Jordan B. Peterson breaks down the Grimm Brothers' “Hansel and Gretel,” revealing the psychological and symbolic dimensions hidden within the classic tale. From the selfishness of weak fathers and malevolent stepmothers to the false promises of hyper-solicitous care, Peterson explores how the abandonment of children into the unknown mirrors moral failure at home—and how faith, courage, and sibling love can redeem it. With echoes of biblical stories and and all too modern warning about overprotective parenting, this fairy tale becomes a rich allegory for navigating betrayal, scarcity, and emerging maturity. This episode was filmed on July 5th, 2025.

BEST OF TST: The sudden popularity of Labubu toys has resulted in grown adults lining up in the early morning hours to acquire as many of these little monsters as possible. Although upon first glance they appear sort of cute, closer examination will reveal that their apparent smile is actually a sinister grin with razor sharp teeth. Designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, the toys are sold by Pop Mart in collaboration with the artist and in relation to his 2015 book “The Monsters.” Their increasing popularity is a result of celebrities like Rihanna or Dua Lipa flaunting their own, although the trend began when Blackpink k-pop singer Lisa first was spotted with the keychain in April 2024. Each doll comes in a sealed box with no indication of what's inside, meaning each purchase is a mystery. Shoppers are notified of a new drop off of the toy at their local stores via WhatsApp. They then rush to the spot, as one Australian article documented, “at 3am.” Put simply, people are lining up during the “witching hour” to buy a mysterious monster in a box after receiving an oddly timed text in the middle of the night. The atmosphere around these toys is similar to any long gone or persisting product, from Furbys and Beanie Babies to Hello Kitty and Pokemon, but there is something else about these little toys that is anything but friendly. The dolls themselves are not really even monsters, but instead more like little children that appear to be possessed and wearing Teletubbies costumes. Like any good marketing campaign, the product page on Amazon describes their various character stores: one of the leaders, zimomo ventures to the human world where he learns yoga and then brings the practice back to his own world in the forest. The monsters are thus more like fairies, and in fact one description reads: “the elves in the forest are curious about the human world. So, the No. 1 curious player LABUBU gathered her friends and secretly came to the city for an adventure. The goal is absolutely not to be discovered by humans!” The forests are described further as “nordic,” which is the mythological nature that was inspiration for the dolls. It's not just the name zimomo that brings back memories of the Momo Challenge, but the fact that these monsters from another world are essentially being promoted like Momo. Mysterious messages in the middle of the night that prompt half-asleep humans to perform some action - in this case, buy a mysterious box that contains what amounts to a fairy, demon, familiar, or personal spirit charm. This is reminiscent also of the 3am Challenge and the recent Mirror Challenge, where one looks into the mirror for so long they watch their face and reality around them distort. The name LA BU BU is even more telling of an underlying darkness. The LALALOOPSY doll, a girl with no apparent ears, a mouth sewn shut, and black buttons for eyes - something further reminiscent of the movie Carolin where the Beldam Other Mother replaces the girl's eyes (soul) with buttons to trap her in the other world - is a toy about fanciful play through a sort of loopy “Lala-ness.” The LA BU BU is generally said to refer to the same playfulness, though the word “bubu” is both a euphemism for a child's injury, and also holds the meaning of grandmother. In other words, LA GRANDMOTHER, the old crone of the forest. She is also known as Momo, Yamamba, the hag, the Hansel and Gretel Witch, or Baba Yaga. She also shares something in common with La Llorona, Ubume, and Banshee. Perhaps this is all a coincidence, or perhaps Labubu, like Elf on the Shelf, is not something we should be bringing into our homes or carrying with us on our person. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. From corpses dressed in new clothes to killers hiding in the walls, these are true crimes too weird to forget – blurring the line between horror and history.Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version of #WeirdDarkness: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateIN THIS EPISODE: It's nickname is “Columbian Devil's Breath” – and it's so powerful it can turn perfectly healthy people into mindless zombies. We'll look at the dangerous and deadly drug, Burundanga. (A Drug That Creates Zombies) *** The chastity belt has, through the ages, become more of a humorous analogy or punchline than the real thing. But then, that's appropriate – seeing as it actually began as a middle-ages joke. (The Strange Truth Behind Chastity Belts) *** A fearsome witch, she is said to kidnap, roast, and eat children in the woods. No – this is not the story of Hansel and Gretel. This witch is much more terrifying – she is the Baba Yaga. (The Legend of Baba Yaga) *** The Oera Linda book is a manuscript written in a form of Old Frisian, purporting to cover historical, mythological, and religious themes of remote antiquity, from 2194 BC to 803 AD. Many are fascinated by what it says others claim it is a hoax or forgery. What is the truth behind the Oera Linda? (What Is The Oera Linda?) HOUR ONE: Ever heard of Shadrack Ireland? (The Mystery of the Garrett Family's Tragic Deaths)==========HOUR TWO: Is it possible that in 1927 we picked up signals from an artificial satellite sent to our planet by an extraterrestrial intelligence? (Why They Call This Snowman Abominable)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: In 1938, stories of a "killer ghost" began to be told in eastern Kentucky. Even though no one ever saw this malevolent apparition, it was said to have caused five very similar and unexplained deaths.
