Interview with John Leon of The Royal Arctic Institute. John returns for the third time to talk about The Royal Arctic Institute's new self titled album. The Royal Arctic Institute is a cinematic instrumental post-jazz group from New York City. They have been recording and releasing records since 2017. Since forming in 2016, the band has been a revolving door of different musicians comprising several different lineups. The current lineup is composed of drummer Lyle Hysen (Das Damen, Arthur Lee), guitarists John Leon (Roky Erickson, Summer Wardrobe, Abra Moore) and Chris Robertson (Elk City, James Mastro), and bassist David Motamed (Das Damen, Two Dollar Guitar, Arthur Lee, Townes Van Zandt). The band name is a reference to the fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. All four members of the Royal Arctic Institute have spent decades playing in various ensembles, working as studio musicians, backing musicians, and touring musicians. This self-titled fourth full-length recording from The Royal Arctic Institute is the first to include guitarist Chris Robertson. According to the band, Robertson is a crucial addition to the group, as he provides an added dimension to The Royal Arctic Institute sound and creative process, particularly because this debuts the group as a two guitar quintet. The decision to present this new album as a self-titled record is tightly connected to the band's excitement about their current musical direction. The new album also marks the first time The Royal Arctic Institute is working with Ray Ketchum of Magic Door Recording. Ketchum, often noted for his engineering and recording work on the last handful of Guided by Voices albums, helped steer the band towards an approach which allowed for a rich and fully developed sonic experience. Ketchum's keen and well attuned ear in the studio made it possible for The Royal Arctic Institute to focus more on the nuances they had been developing on previous releases, something apparent on “Twigs Of Cries, Feathers Of Sobs.” As guitarist John Leon points out: https://www.theroyalarctic.com/

On this month's episode of Magus we are travelling all about Renaissance Europe and up through the layers of the heavens to undertake divine revelations into the life, times, and accomplishments of Giordano Bruno! From Bruno's early life as a Dominican priest, forced to flee one of six popes he thoroughly annoyed, right up to his horrid execution in the Campo de' Fiori, we're running through a wild highlights reel of his accomplishments - both in the development of his pioneering mnemonic memory systems through to creation of his occult philosophy, rooted in 'Egyptian Magic.'It's a wild journey, ranging from forbidden texts, hidden in the walls of a latrine, back through time to the birth of Renaissance Magic care of the likes of Pico and Ficino, into the heart of the French and English courts, to all the Universities where Bruno made himself so unpopular, wizardry aside this would still be a fascinating story. Yet, Giordano Bruno also preached a unique gospel, informed by the mythology of Hermes Trismegistus, which involved using hieroglyphics to talk to angels, flirting with Queen Elisabeth I, writing pretty ripe poetry, and trying to debate the failings of Christianity with the Pope himself...With examples of Bruno's wilder mystic beliefs as well as examples of how he shaped Renaissance science and culture, and even inspired aspects of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, if you know nothing about Bruno then this one is going to be a face-melter. And if you do, we bet the wealth of a mid-rank Medici that there will be things in this episode that will still surprise you! Take a hot air balloon ride up to Svalbard with Emma and Izze as they look into Philip Pullman's The Golden _Compass and its 2007 adaptation of the same name. These two try to figure out the mysteries of Dust, what on Earth makes film crews completely rearrange a book's plot beats, and the weird no-man's-land between middle grade books and the era of YA. Content warnings for _The Golden Compass include: child abuse, kidnapping, child death, animal cruelty, brainwashing, oppressive theocracy, very British racism, and graphic depictions of polar bear violence. It's 75 years since the publication of C.S.Lewis's classic children's fantasy The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. In celebration, the West End stage version is touring in UK and Ireland throughout the year – its run in Cardiff finished a week ago, and it will be back in Wales, at Llandudno, in August. In this ATC we look at the continuing appeal of this story, look at the man behind it, and explore the use of an imagined world for conveying religious truth. We also discuss Philip Pullman, JK Rowling, and others. We are joined in studio by three guests who've done a lot of thinking about story-telling – and written quite a bit themselves. Caleb Woodbridge, who's based in Pontypridd, has been in publishing in a variety of roles for most of his career after focussing in children's literature as a student. He delights in myth and legend, science fiction and fantasy, and not surprisingly he's a Doctor Who fan. Hannah Hess, from Cardiff, has three children to keep her supplied with ideas for her writing, and to date she's had four books published for young people, Callenlas Chronicles. And Catherine Butler is professor of English literature at Cardiff University, specialising in children's literature. She's author of several monographs and editor of five academic volumes, and has published six novels for children and young adults. Catherine Butler - People - Cardiff University
Did you get your photo taken with Rabbit the Bookstore Cat Cutout? If not, you probably missed our 5th Birthday Party. Too bad. But not worries: There will be more parties. This week, Sam is caught up in the new Haruki Murakami, but Hannah luckily has three books to talk about, so it's not a disaster. Here's the lineup: - "Fourth Wing," by Rebecca Yarros — Hannah's been saving it and it reminds her of the time we discovered Philip Pullman (but, no, it's not that good). Perfect vacation reading. - "The City and Its Uncertain Walls," by Haruki Murakami — Sam is wondering if Haruki is trolling us at this point. Cats! Spaghetti! A record store! Teenage girls! But it's still oddly compelling. - "The Collaborators," by Michael Idov — Hannah thought this was pretty good. It's international espionage. With Russia. It's just not always clear why we're supposed to care. - "The Harder I Fight, the More I Love You," by Neko Case — Hannah is highly enamored of this, and doesn't think it matters if you can name a song by her. Some messed up shit happens in Neko's life. Also, no, we didn't get our act together to post this in time for Valentine's Day. It's nobody's fault.
Send us a textThis Week on the Podcast Richards Sparks stops by to discuss his new book New Rules New Realm. In this clip, he talks about the writing not being right for one story but might belong to another story. ****Richard Sparks was born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter College, where, like both JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman before him, he studied English Language and Literature), Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine O'clock News. Rowan Atkinson performed his Schoolmaster sketch in John Cleese's The Secret Policeman's Ball. UK TV credits include The Famous Five, The Flying Kiwi, The Optimist, The Worst of Hollywood, and a lot of script editing. On being hired by Columbia Pictures TV, Richard moved with his family to Los Angeles. His lyrics have been recorded by talents as diverse as Dom de Luise, Eric Idle, Vanessa Williams, and Plácido Domingo. He has written libretti for several new operas composed by Lee Holdridge (TV's Beauty and the Beast, et al.), produced by the LA Opera, as well as writing new English versions of German and Italian classics. His non-fiction books, Diary of a Mad Poker Player, and its sequel, Getting Lucky, chronicle his adventures in the poker boom of the 2000s. Along the Cherry Lane is his biography of the music producer, Milt Okun.“High Adventure Spiced with Low Comedy,” inspired by his love of online role-playing games, New Rock New Role is the first of four volumes Richard has written so far in the New Rock fantasy series and is his fiction debut. Business travel remains one of our largest sources of greenhouse emissions, accounting for 26% of the UK's total emissions. In an ideal world, no one would have to travel to work or events, some might even point to the way everyone adapted in COVID as a prime example of this in practice. However, for many that model of work is not feasible in the long-term. So, how can we reduce this unavoidable stream of emissions? Businesses are starting to take the right steps, however, today's guest is paving the way as a shining example of sustainable business travel and events management. In this episode, Mel is joined by Christopher Truss, Global Sustainability Director at Reed & Mackay, to discuss their impressive existing ISO Standard portfolio and their journey towards ISO 14064 carbon verification. You'll learn · Who is Chris Truss? · Who are Reed & Mackay? · What are the highlights from Reed & Mackay's latest Sustainability and Responsible Business report? · What Standards are Reed & Mackay certified to? · What is the demand for sustainability within the business travel and events management sector? · Why get ISO 14064 verified? · What were the challenges with obtaining ISO 14064 verification? · What are the benefits of obtaining ISO 14064 Verification? Resources · Reed & Mackay · Reed & Mackay Sustainable and Responsible Business Report 2024 · Carbonology In this episode, we talk about: [02:05] Episode Summary – We welcome today's guest, Chris Truss, Global Sustainability Director at Reed & Mackay, to explore their ISO Standards portfolio and journey towards ISO 14064 verification. [02:40] Who is Chris?: Chris has had over 20 years experience in the business travel industry. He is currently responsible for driving the sustainability agenda at Reed & Mackay, which includes the development of services and solutions that their clients require to meet their own sustainability initiatives. He also manages a wide range of third-party suppliers. A lesser know fact about Chris is in a band, playing the folk fiddle and singing in pubs around Yorkshire. He also plays tennis in the over 45 category for Yorkshire! [04:50] Who are Reed & Mackay? – Reed & Mackay are a global travel management and event management business. They help clients all the way from picking up the telephone and making bookings on their behalf, helping them source appropriate venues for their events and then managing the overall spend, the supply chain and ultimately reporting back to them on what they've been up to and how they can improve their processes and save money. Reed & Mackay are highly regarded for their quality of services, especially within the professional services sector, and they proudly boast a number of large blue chip clients. [05:50] What are some of the highlights in Reed & Mackay's Sustainability and Responsible Business Report? When Chris came into his latest role, he looked to tackle two main points: · How can Reed & Mackay operate sustainably? · How can we articulate that to our clients? As a result of the work Chris has done, Reed & Mackay have signed up to the United Nations Global Compact and have aligned themselves with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. They have also become an EcoVadis rated supplier and are undertaking their first Carbon Reduction Plan disclosure. From a corporate responsibility point of view, they have made great strides to improve their gender pay gap. They are also ensuring the integrity of their charitable partnerships. [08:00] What are some of the sustainability initiatives that Reed & Mackay have started? Reed & Mackay support a charity called 4Ocean, who are trying to remove as much plastic from our oceans as possible. They selected this charity in particular due to it's global reach, embodying the nature of Reed & Mackay's global influence in 13 countries for the past 10 years. They recognised the need to support a sustainability based charity as corporate travel is highly polluting, so this is a form of taking responsibility and looking at where they can assist to reduce environmental damage. 4Oceans also allows their employees to get involved directly, should they choose to take some time out of the office to help with ocean clean-up. [09:55] What ISO Standards are Reed & Mackay certified to? They are currently certified to: · ISO 27001 Information Security · ISO 14001 Environmental Management · ISO 22301 Business Continuity · ISO 9001 Quality Management All of which they have been certified to for over 10 years now! They acted as a foundation for Chris to drive his sustainability agenda. [11:10] How are these ISO Standards managed across the business? – Reed & Mackay have a dedicated Security and Trust team that manage all ISO certifications, in addition to their other responsibilities. All of the ISO Standards are a part of their Integrated Management System, which sits alongside their policies and procedures for the business that are managed by a central team. This has provided them with an invaluable foundation to ensure the delivery of quality services, client satisfaction and continual improvement. [12:45] What is the demand for sustainability within the business travel sector? They are receiving more requirements and requests from clients in regard to their own operational CO2 footprint, which is needed for clients own reporting requirements as Reed & Mackay would count towards many clients Scope 3 emissions. There is also a need for more transparency with carbon reporting, including the use of credible calculation methodology's. The verification of GHG emissions also gives clients more confidence that businesses are doing what they say they're doing. [14:15] What was the main driver behind Reed & Mackay gaining ISO 14064 verification?: While they felt confident in their sustainability efforts up to a certain point, they wanted someone to come in and mark their homework to make sure they were doing the right thing. With the increase in client demand for credible sustainability reporting, it was vital to pursue various CPD disclosures such as EcoVadis and prepare for upcoming legislation like CSRD. To ensure they were in the best possible shape to give the information requested by clients and other stakeholders, they needed am accurate and reliable method of verification, which is what ISO 14064 could provide. [15:40] What were the main challenges in obtaining ISO 14064 verification?: Just getting a hold of the raw data was the most difficult part, although they found it to be a very enlightening experience too. Having to dig to find the right information helped Chris to understand the business better, giving him a greater visibility on where their carbon emissions are coming from and where there are opportunities to reduce those. You have to be very tenacious to get all the necessary data. Chris highlights purchased goods and services data as particularly challenging to obtain due to its granular nature. Now they have been through this process once, they've got a system in place to make data collection a lot easier in future. [18:55] What impact has ISO 14064 verification had on Reed & Mackay?: It's helped from an internal perspective as people now have a greater visibility and understanding of the impact that have on an individual basis. This in turn creates a strong launchpad for their Net Zero strategy. From an external perspective, it's given Reed & Mackay a lot more confidence in their own processes and their ability to work with their clients towards sustainability goals. [20:00] What were the main benefits of getting ISO 14064 verified?: Giving clients, stakeholder and employees confidence: The verification calculation is reliable, and so they can be confident in relaying the facts and figures to interested parties. A great insight: The data has provided huge insights into how the business operates and where it's biggest emissions sources lie. This is vital to know before you take steps to try and reduce your current impact. Ability to create an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan: Once again, with confidence in having the correct data to hand, they are able to formulate an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan which can be realistically achieved. Anti Green-washing: Consumers are crying out for a reliable sign of credibility. Simply having an environmental policy statement may have been enough 10 years ago, but that's not the case now. People expect evidence of your sustainability claims. [21:50] Chris's top tip for anyone considering ISO 14064 verification: Just get started and don't be scared by the process. Though it may seem daunting to start, you will actually be in a much better position than when you started. Having verified data and awareness of where that data comes from and what it means on a larger scale will be vital to looking for opportunities for improvement. So, if you want to improve your sustainability, you just need to get cracking! [23:20] How are Reed & Mackay helping organisations improve the sustainability of their travel?: Reed & Mackay's ambition is to make sure that clients understand the impact of their choices at every single step of their journey. To help, they provide the carbon footprint of every booking they make, whether that be through their site or with a consultant. They also have approval processes built into their systems, which can be based on carbon. For example, if a client doesn't want to take the lowest carbon option on a particular journey, they can add required approval from an additional person within that client's organisation. So it adds a level of accountability over the choices people make. They also provide full reporting on business travel activity and where potential savings have been missed. This is a valuable tool if they need to provide travel data to carbon consultants for example, they'll already have all of those granular reports prepared. These reports will highlight where clients haven't taken the lowest carbon option, i.e. where they could travel in a group instead of individually. Reed & Mackay's intention is to make sure people have visibility of carbon alongside cost so clients can make a fair and balanced decision. Additional services include: · Able to set carbon budgets across a business · Ability to purchase carbon credits for offsetting purposes · Opportunities to mitigate carbon emissions through offsetting, or decarbonise through Carbon Reduction Plans over a period of time [28:50] Chris's book recommendation: His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman [29:15] Chris's favourite quote: You can't measure success if you have never failed – Steffi Graf If you would like to learn more about Reed & Mackay, and their sustainability initiatives, visit their website. [00:02:27] Richard mentions “BSD” stands for “Berkeley Software Distribution.” Deb confirms the existence of the BSD license and its relevance. [00:03:27] Deb admits it's challenging to determine the number of FreeBSD users due to the nature of the BSD license but estimates hundreds of thousands based on device usage. [00:04:08] Deb distinguishes the FreeBSD Foundation from the FreeBSD Project, explaining the foundation's role in supporting the project and the community through funding, development, and advocacy. [00:06:47] Deb compares the FreeBSD Foundation to other foundations like the GNOME Foundation and the Linux Foundation, emphasizing FreeBSD's focus on software development and community support. [00:08:15] Deb reveals most of the foundation's funding comes from corporate sponsors. She highlights the foundation's increasing focus on security in response to global standards and government guidelines, mentioning FreeBSD's involvement in security research and development. [00:12:45] There's a discussion on the foundation's approach to policy and standards, noting the limited resources but emphasizing the importance of corporate and community input in deciding priorities and projects. [00:15:52] Richard questions Deb about feedback mechanisms used to gauge the FreeBSD community's concerns about security. He wonders about the participation dynamics. Deb details the communication channels within the FreeBSD community, mentions a recent community survey and what the responses revealed, and explains the 1% negative feedback. [00:19:56] The conversation shifts towards diversity and inclusion within FreeBSD, questioning the foundation's strategies to enhance geographical and demographic diversity. Hannah has absconded to New York City, but no one will go to the Beatrix Potter exhibit with her. Such a shame. No matter! We're fired up about the Newburyport Literary Festival, and ready to talk books, starting with a recap of Leigh Bardugo's brand-new "The Familiar," which Sam has decided he likes quite a bit. Maybe not quite as much as both of us like "The Secret Commonwealth," but not everyone can be Philip Pullman. Dude is just unparalleled in his ability to ask giant questions (religion! fascism!) with effortless storytelling. Not sure Sam would say the same about Christine Ma-Kellams, whose debut novel, "The Band," is among the strangest books he's ever read and he's not quite sure what to make of it. If you at least know what we mean when we say "K-Pop," you might be into it. But Hannah is super into "I Cheerfully Refuse," the latest from Leif Enger and a novel that offers a bit of hope-punk future along with multiple sentence that just hit you right in the chest. Finally, we wrap with a look at John Le Carre's "Call for the Dead," which is a George Smiley novel, and Sam now knows that Smiley is, indeed, his greatest recurring character. If you haven't read a book from 1961 in a while, give it a shot. It's a good way to get influencer culture off the palate.
Esi Edugyan's thrilling novel follows the astonishing adventures of its titular character, Washington Black, whose escape from the brutal cane plantations of Barbados was only the beginning. Kirsty Young talks to the author Philip Pullman about what he's learned from his life so far. Pullman is the acclaimed novelist behind global bestsellers like His Dark Materials. He recounts the story of his own childhood, how he still contemplates the mystery of his father's death, and why he owes his literary success to hard work. If you could have a conversation with your younger self, what would you tell them? In Young Again Kirsty takes her guests back to the pivotal moments in their lives. Reflecting on what they wish they'd known at the time, and what they've learned along the way, she discovers the honest – and surprising – advice they'd give their younger selves. The GRE General Test may be the world's most widely used admissions test for graduate & professional school, which makes the assessment important to anyone considering graduate, business, or law school. Amy and Mike invited educator Vince Kotchian to share details on what to know about the GRE in 2024. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What does the GRE test and how has it changed over the years? What should students, tutors, and counselors know about the shorter GRE? What should test takers know about the computer-based format of the GRE? What kinds of programs accept the GRE? When should students prepare for and take the GRE? MEET OUR GUEST Vince Kotchian grew up in small-town Connecticut and completed the honors program at Boston College, graduating with a B.A. in English Literature. He moved to San Diego in 2007 and has been working full-time as a test-prep tutor ever since. Vince has scored a perfect 170 in verbal (twice) and a 167 in quant on the GRE. He is the founder of both Vince Kotchian Test Prep and GRE Verbal Precision. Over the years, Vince has written some test-prep books and courses, but still enjoys GRE tutoring: “When a student texts me that she aced the test or got into her reach program, I still literally jump up and down and grin.” In his spare time, Vince likes traveling using miles and points (Japan is his favorite country to visit), reading (favorite authors include Haruki Murakami, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, and Philip Pullman), watching The Great British Bake-Off (and sometimes actually baking things), hiking and camping, and rooting for the Red Sox and Patriots. Vince previously appeared on this podcast in episode # 197 to discuss All About The GRE and in episode # 209 in a TEST PREP PROFILE. Find Vince at Vince Kotchian Test Prep. Is March Fourth a "declarative sentence"? No, Sam, it's an imperative sentence. But it's Hannah's birthday and at least he remembered that, if not his grammar lessons. Not to worry, though, this episode is chock full of weighty discussion, starting with "Women and Children First," the biography of the pioneering Dr. Susan Dimock (with a side bar on the enshittification of Google), and the subject of our first Sunday Salon on March 10 in Beverly Farms. From there, we head into discussion of a cool little collection of Jonathan Lethem essays, interviews, and short stories from PM Press, which got Sam buzzing, and not just because Lethem is living in Maine right now. This leads to a solid discussion of what makes for a good interview (or a bad one) — and that dovetails perfectly into Hannah's read of "Supercommunicators," by Charles Duhigg, which leads into a discussion of ski instructors who could really use the book and communication techniques that may seem obvious, but also work. Someone who doesn't need much advice about communication is Philip Pullman, whose "The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ" is a triumph and has Sam very excited, despite the fact it was released 13 years ago. He's not sure how he missed it. If you're interested in mythmaking and Christianity's core stories, you have to read it. And, speaking of mythmaking, Hannah has read the new Katherine Arden, "The Warm Hands of Ghosts," and it does seem to deliver on all of her promise from the "Bear and the Nightingale" trilogy, which makes Sam hyperbolic. It's dark and makes clear that war is, indeed, very bad. The new Stephen King, though? Yeah, it's also pretty bad. Sam's going to finish "Holly," but he's not sure why. The phrase "social commentary for three-year-olds" may have been uttered. However, it does trigger a pretty good discussion about whether you can write a good book that's only for a certain subset of people or if truly good books are "for everyone." Like Paul Lynch's "Prophet Song," which everyone really needs to read. As a reminder.

On this episode of the podcast, I sit down with Author, screenwriter, and a man of many talents Richard Sparks to talk about his new novel, New Rock New Role. ***** Born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter College, where, like both JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman before him, he studied English Language and Literature), Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine O'clock News. His lyrics have been recorded by talents as diverse as Dom de Luise, Eric Idle, Vanessa Williams and Plácido Domingo. He has written libretti for several new operas composed by Lee Holdridge (TV's Beauty and the Beast, et al.), produced by the LA Opera, as well writing new English versions of German and Italian classics. His non-fiction books, Diary of a Mad Poker Player, and its sequel, Getting Lucky, chronicle his adventures in the poker boom of the 2000's. Along the Cherry Lane is his biography of the music producer, Milt Okun.“High Adventure Spiced with Low Comedy,” inspired by his love of online role-playing games, New Rock New Role is the first of four volumes Richard has written so far in the New Rock fantasy series, and is his fiction debut. William Blake's poetry and prose. We visit Sir Philip at home to discuss the poet who has ‘inspired and intoxicated' him for the last sixty years. In Philip's book-lined sitting room we discuss Blake's most loved works: his Songs of Innocence and of Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Auguries of Innocence. This episode of the Folklore & Fiction podcast was first published as a newsletter in October 2020. I'm recording it as a supplemental podcast now so that new listeners and subscribers have an opportunity to engage with the material. In it, I'm writing about child lore with help from scholars Gary Alan Fine and others, author Philip Pullman, and The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin. I'm also exploring the use of child lore in storycraft and providing you with an exercise on the topic. (Companion Dispatch: https://csmaccath.com/blog/what-child-lore)
Richard Sparks has been successful in so much of his work from writing The Schoolmaster, performed by Rowan Atkinson, to aiding an opera singer to launch her career. The one area he couldn't seem to get into was fiction writing, until now that is. On today's episode, I am so excited to have writer and author Richard Sparks on the show to discuss his prior pieces of work as well as his new fantasy novel! Richard shares what it was like to work with John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, and others. At the end of the episode, we hear a clip from his new fantasy story, New Rock New Role that talks about a man who gets sucked into a video game and is trying to understand how he got there. This is Richard's take on how it would feel to be a character in one of the games that he frequently plays. The clip we hear is from early on in the book and series, and there is more to come! Grab a free audio book chapter and ebook chapter or buy the full novel released December 12 on his website - www.richardsparks.com! IN THIS EPISODE:[1:37] Richard tells us about what he's been doing and the work he's done with John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson and others.[6:38] A clip from The Schoolmaster by Richard Sparks and Rowan Atkinson.[10:14] Richard tells us about his experience in the music industry. [11:58] Richard shares about his new project, a fantasy, and how it was inspired from real life. [19:45] A clip from New Rock New Role read and written by Richard Sparks. KEY TAKEAWAYS:Richard doesn't take credit for launching people off into their careers, he says they are all a collaborative relationship, where both sides are needed to be successful. Comedy is fear and pain and misery and disasters and things going wrong and people falling into puddles and betrayals and miscommunications and what good adventure isn't full of that.Richard struggled to become a fiction writer because he couldn't connect with the content. He has now finally embraced fiction writing now that he can use his own voice.Check out HelloFresh and use my code truefictionprojectfree for a great deal: https://www.hellofresh.com/Check out Rosetta Stone and use my code TODAY for a great deal: https://www.rosettastone.com/Fiction and Schoolmaster Credits:Excerpt written by: Richard SparksExcerpt narrated by: Richard SparksSchoolmaster Clip performed by: Rowan AtkinsonSchoolmaster Clio written by Richard SparksBIO:Born in England, and a graduate of Oxford University (Exeter College, where, like both JRR Tolkien and Philip Pullman before him, he read English), Richard started out as a writer of stage plays, comedy revues and TV, for such shows as Not the Nine o'clock News. 60 years on from the death of CS Lewis how is his legacy viewed? We’ll look at him as writer, academic and as a Christian apologist. Join us to find out why he is like camembert and to discover the hidden Lewis novel that you've probably not read - and yet it is arguably his best work for adults. Why has he attracted detractors, from his own biographer A.N. Wilson to Philip Pullman - and what are they missing? Was he racist or misogynistic? We debate! But mostly, we appreciate his literary gift to us in the Narnia stories. At the moment you can't move in the shops for sales of Pumpkins, and all kinds of Hallowe'en outfits – such as masks, witches' hats, and luminous skeletons. It's being reported that spending on Hallowe'en is expected this year to surpass the billion pound mark. Come Hallowe'en there'll be the trick or treat ring of the doorbell, and spooky parties serving foul-looking broth, witches' fingers and graveyard chocolate cake. But as far as the church is concerned, there's little or no engagement except perhaps for a so-called Light Party. Rosa Hunt takes a broader look at Hallowe'en. We hear about the history of bonfire celebrations on October 31st which stretch back to pre-Christian times; in Wales “Nos Calan Gaeaf” had both agricultural and spiritual significance. We ask why many in the church have little or nothing to do with Hallowe'en. As far as popular stories like the Harry Potter books or Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' are concerned, the church has sometimes been accused of keeping such fantastical story lines at arm's length. We consider why. And amidst all the Hallowe'en trick & treating, can all the fun tip over into something more sinister? Rosa's guests this week are: Sergeant Sue Carrington, a crime prevention police officer based in north Wales. Revd Dr Rob Beamish, a school chaplain and Baptist minister based in Colwyn Bay. Mandy Bayton, Director of Evangelism, Church in Wales. Twm Elias, Welsh author who has written a written a book about festivals during the year including “Nos Calan Gaeaf”. Revd Canon Dr Jason Bray, Vicar of St Giles's Parish Church Wrexham and a Deliverance Minister.

We discuss narrative, gender ideology, male and female typical modes of engagement, and science. We discuss new research that finds that mammals, but not birds, seem to like fruit that contains alcohol. Hello and welcome to Entangled! The podcast where we explore the science of consciousness, the true nature of reality, and what it means to be a spiritual being having a human experience. I'm your host Jordan Youkilis, and today I'm joined by Kent Kachejian as part of the miniseries on Maharishi Vedic Science. Kent is a doctoral candidate at MIU studying Consciousness & Human Potential. In this episode, Kent discusses how his love for fantasy, language, and philosophy brought him to Fairfield, Iowa. We discuss the life and lessons he learned from Tolkien, and the disciplinary matrices from Ancient Greece to today. Next, we consider the paradigm conflicts that philosophers and scientists face when they posit theories that buck societal norms. We then discuss Socrates, the gadfly of Athens, and his trial/execution for corrupting the youth and worshipping strange gods. We discuss the prescient warnings Socrates offered regarding the decline of Athenian ideals and the parallels between his life and that of Jesus Christ. From there, we discuss the value of silence and the importance of living your moral code, even when its inconvenient for external circumstances. We end the discussion considering the nature of dark matter, the subtle body, qualia of thought and the concept of Atma. Outros for this and all episodes available at entangledpodcast.substack.com. Philip Pullman's The Amber Spyglass is the third and concluding volume of the epic His Dark Materials trilogy – and might just be the only children's book ever nominated for The Booker Prize. The story follows the journey of Lyra – a young girl destined to bring about unfathomable change in her world and beyond. It was longlisted for The Booker Prize in 2001, alongside Ian McEwan's Atonement, David Mitchell's number9dream and that year's winner, Peter Carey's The True History of the Kelly Gang. In this episode, Jo and James talk about: The animal forms their daemons would take A brief – and slightly spoiler-y – summary of what happens in The Amber Spyglass, as well as the previous books in the trilogy Whether The Amber Spyglass is really a children's book The literature that has inspired His Dark Materials Whether more children's books should be in contention for The Booker Prize The Booker Clinic: Books to rediscover the joys of reading Books discussed in this episode: Paradise Lost by John Milton Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. On today's episode Sara and Katie discuss the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.
Chelsey and Sara discuss The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman as individual children's classics and explore the way they are in conversation with each other. We chat about each novel's philosophical framework, storytelling style, and depiction of childhood, which leads into a larger conversation about the role of Kid Lit in ethical and moral development. We thoroughly enjoyed returning to both of these fantastical stories, but each brought up some big questions for us as readers and new moms. Together, we're learning to be better, more critical and thorough readers of classic and contemporary literature. We love discussing books and reading with all of you and hope you'll join our group of nerdy readers at patreon.com/novelpairings. Annual subscriptions are now available at a discounted price.
