Today, I'm so honored to have none other than Sophie Gamand on the show. Sophie is an animal advocate, artist, and award-winning photographer. You might know her from her stunning, powerful Pit Bull Flower Power series or her Wet Dog series. She does her work pro bono for non-profits, rescues, and shelters to communicate the idea of dogs having agency and she does it through photography.Sophie shares her experience about awakening to the world of rescue in Puerto Rico, her commitment to helping shelters and rescues, and how vital it is to use art for good. We discuss our shared deep connection to animals, how her journey got started, the stigma around adoption, and why certain breeds have come to reflect a person's status. This is a very open, honest, and raw conversation about dog breeding and more. In the end, it's Sophie's work that she hopes can help change the negative narrative Pitbulls unfairly carry and it's animals in her life who encourage her to keep going. They do that for me too, and for you - and so, this episode is friendship.Join The Animal That Changed You community on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook -- we're waiting to welcome you! This week on the Top Artist Podcast, we talk to photographer Sophie Gamand about her many dog photography series and the changes they have made in both dog and human lives. Gamand’s Pit Bull Flower Power series is just one example of photography that tackles unjust treatment of animals by questioning our prejudices and getting us to appreciate the fragility of life. We talk to her about this work, her experiences at shelters and dog meat farms, and about what motivates her to use photography to give a voice to the voiceless. This weeks guest is world-renowned photographer and shelter-dog advocate Sophie Gamand, who joins me to talk about how to make a real difference in the world with your photography. Sophie's Pit Bull Flower Power project started as a passion project but quickly exploded in the media, becoming the catalyst for a full time career in photography. For Sophie, it's shelter dogs. Your passion may be similar, or completely different. But what Sophie shares in our conversation today will inspire you to think about how you can attach more meaning to your photography, to tell stories that make a difference, and to create images that can make a real-world difference to whatever cause you set your mind and heart to.
In this conversation with French photographer Sophie Gamand, we discuss her transformative "Pit Bull Flower Power" series, how she overcame her fear of dogs, and her unique perspective on the relationship between dogs and humans.
In episode 8, Melissa and Cody aim to break stigmas for the voiceless Pit Bull. The couple share a powerful conversation with French artist Sophie Gamand, an animal advocate and the creator of the photo series Pit Bull Flower Power. Sophie visits animal shelters and photographs shelter-dogs to help pups get adopted. To face her own fears, Sophie began creating beautiful flower crowns for Pit Bulls to wear, these photos ultimately let to Pit Bull Flower Power, which has become one of the most powerful tools in today’s pit bull advocacy worldwide. The trio discuss the stigmas of the Pit Bull, society's relationship with dogs in general, and what is next the creative Sophie herself. We are left asking ourselves 2 questions - what can we do to make a difference, and what beautiful thing will Sophie do next.Sophie Gamand is a French award-winning photographer and animal advocate living and working in New York. Since 2010, she has been focusing on dogs and our relationship with them. Sophie travels around the U.S. (and abroad) photographing shelter dogs and at-risk dogs to raise awareness of their fate, tell their stories, and help them get adopted. We kick off Pull It Together 2.0 with French award-winning photographer and animal advocate Sophie Gamand. Sophie travels the world photographing shelter dogs to help bring awareness to their fate, and help them get adopted. Her most known series are Wet Dog and Pit Bull Flower Power. Since 2010 Sophie’s focus has been unpacking the relationship between human and dog, but Sophie is a true renaissance woman and has lived many creative lives from opera singer to magazine curator to embroiderer. Throughout our conversation she shares how following her fear lead to her to her most poignant and powerful work. Sophie also shares her personal journey with therapy and how she has handled the conflict of needing to heal herself, but feeling as though her art would suffer if she was no longer in that dark place. We discuss how she used art to address her demons and work through past traumas. We learn that creativity doesn’t come from pain, but comes from our ability to connect. Quotes: “I had a clean slate and all the room to spread my wings and figure out what am I going to do now? Who am I going to be? That was scary as hell but also very exciting.” “The Universe just handed this to me on a silver platter with a little bow on it and I chickened out and walked away.” “We should trust our inner child more when it comes to our creative process. As children, we know where our truth is.” “It was shattering to spend all those months being rejected when I thought this was going to be a walk in the park.” “As a creative, especially when I am in a darker mode, I cry and I think why can’t I know what I want to be?” “That first step is the easiest, most difficult and most important step.” “Art is about harnessing our fears.” Links mentioned: Pit Bull Flower Power by Sophie Gamand Sophie Gamand on the Pawprint podcast (talking about Frida) Youngman Brown on the Pawprint podcast Sophie's exhibit at The Invisible Dog Art Center Connect with Sophie: Website / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter On the next episode: Fieldey : Website / Instagram Join the discussion in the Facebook group!
