Caron Proschan is the founder and CEO of Simply, a premium confections brand known for its unusually simple and clean products.In 2013, when Caron was switching a lot of her personal, beauty and cleaning products to more natural options, she realized one thing she used often – which was gum – was a category that was never disrupted. She dove into the research to learn more about what goes into conventional chewing gum and was surprised to find that most gum on the market uses a base that has plastic in it, usually called “gum base” on the labels. She also found that the FDA allows gums to have several artificial ingredients like aspartame, artificial flavors, and colors as well. She made it her mission to do something about it, and her first product, Simply Gum was born.The gum was a huge success, and after seeing the demand for Simply's unusually simple ingredients, the brand has evolved to include more premium confections, including mints, Really Real Gummies, and Chocolate Date Bars. In this week's episode, Caron talks to us about how she created Simply's first ever gum from her small NY kitchen experimenting with chicle, a natural alternative to gum base, for over a year. Charles and George are joined by filmmaker and writer Kath Tolentino today to chat about lots of topics like AAPI movies, seeking representation, and tech news. Today's big topic is one that's sure to benefit filmmakers starting out: budgeting for independent features. Give this episode a listen for guidance on your next Indie film's budget! In this episode, we talk about… How many streaming services are currently offering carousels of films that supposedly celebrate AAPI Heritage Month (Asian American & Pacific Islander), but the nature of the content they've chosen has been disappointing to say the least. Questions about how they chose the content - should the films be about AAPI issues or have a prominent AAPI actor or director?  How the carousels of AAPI content could have been expanded if more Indie and short films were included. How to know when to hunt for agents or managers once you've created a great short film. Why shorts can generate interest from representation but have a lower ceiling for next steps - representation will always want to immediately know what you can do that will make them money. The roles of agents vs managers, how they differ, and what they do for you. How people perceive that this industry will make them a ton of money, but it's hard to make a lot of income, especially with the amount of money agents and managers take as their cut. Atlas Orion Anamorphic lenses which are great for widescreen and a specific quality.  Atlas's new Limited run of Silver Edition lenses which will allow the flare to match the color of the light. These are super niche lenses and they're going to make 100 sets. What to look for in buying your first set of lenses if you feel overwhelmed by all the review blogs and videos out there. Why creating a budget where you pay people at proper industry scale can be difficult to determine. What ends up happening with most Indie films is that the budget is created backwards from what producers feel like they can realistically raise for the movie. How the schedule is closely intertwined with the budget - the number of days you shoot will alter the costs drastically. Why if you're hiring a line producer, you want to find someone who is used to working on films with a similar schedule to yours. How usually you will have a few factors locked in and will build the rest of the budget around that. Why you need to always build a contingency into your budget and allow more for cast than you think. Using Kickstarter and WeFunder and why there's something to be said for finding a way to make your movie within the confines of a smaller budget. I'm also helping them connect with other people who are in there with them. So I drive them to places like the podcast or my mastermind and my one-on-one coaching so they feel less alone and they feel comfortable joining those places because they've gotten to know me through Instagram.    R: Yes, you are one of the first people that ever reached out to me for collaboration. You've taught me a lot about collaboration and community and that we are in this together.         How Using Kickstarter can Bolster Your Goals   R: As you know, in this series we’re discussing ways to monetize using Instagram, and one of the ways you did this was by using Kickstarter to fund your Line-a-day journal. Obviously, I got on board because I thought it was a fabulous idea and I use my journal every single morning. Tell us the results of using Kickstarter and how you exceeded your goals!   C: Yeah. So Kickstarter is a platform where you can offer new products, new product ideas, things that you're exploring, and offer people an opportunity to join in with you by crowdsourcing to fund your idea. I knew I had this idea for the line a day journal. I had done a short four month trial version and I was ready to launch the full year version for 2021.   On Kickstarter, I set up a campaign and you can run them for a limited time. The suggested time is two weeks. So that's what I did. Then you pick a value that is your target goal for your Kickstarter--how much money you want to raise to be able to produce your thing.   People who join in on your Kickstarter can get different levels of bonuses and extras to go along with whatever it is you're funding. So, um, if you reach your funding level, then Kickstarter collects all that money and gives you most of it and they can keep a little bit for themselves which is normal.   Then you produce the thing, but if you don't make your goal, then nobody pays anything. You don't get funds and it's all gone. I set my goal at $1,500 in two weeks. That was what I was going to try to do. I promoted it on my Instagram, my newsletter, and my Facebook.   A Real Audience Response   I was shocked at the response. Partly, I think it was because, yes, it's a good idea. It was a very unique idea. There's nothing like a one year line a day journal on the market. All the line a day journals are for five years and this one is for one year that cycles through every month.   In the journal, you can see every month what you wrote. The date, the month before. So it was a unique idea and my community, my Instagram community and the rest of my “Do a New Thing” community wanted to support me and Kickstarter is a fun way for people to support you and to promote and help you to be ...

I was tall and skinny and though awkward I was light and could fly confidently quicker than most on the field or the track. Running wasn’t a chore back then. If I would get a pair of fresh sneakers I would want to see how fast and far they could take me the minute I fastened them to my feet. It wasn’t until I hit puberty that I started to slow down a bit and running soon became a bore. I didn’t need to run to lose weight and I didn’t quite understand why anyone would want to run  longer than once around a track. As time passed by I just grew completely disinterested in it. It wasn’t until I moved to England at 38 that it became a thing. I currently find myself running. Running here and there and everywhere for everyone but most importantly running for myself.   Jen McMahon in her own words:    I remember distinctly when I was on the cheer squad in high school, we had to run 1 mile as a warm up everyday before practice.  I would basically do whatever I could to avoid the mile or cut it short or just complain through the whole thing.  It never occurred to me that I could actually do this for fun.  I’m not really sure where the motivation came from, but when I was about 26 and about to get married, I decided I wanted to run a marathon.  I had NO race experience and I just decided to start training (just barely).  A couple friends of mine and my husband (fiancee at the time) start running all around Huntington Beach to prepare. We ran our first marathon, the Rock ‘n Roll San Diego that June and I have been running in some way or another ever since.  After having kids I stopped doing marathons and half marathons decided to focus more on 5ks, 10ks and sprint triathlons. Sophie travels around the U.S. photographing shelter dogs for free, to help bring awareness to their fate, and help them get adopted. Her most known series are Wet Dog and Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution.  She has won several prestigious photography awards for her work (including a Sony World Photography Award in 2014), as well as advocacy awards for her dedication to animal rescue and adoption. One of the things I love about working in the Consumer Technology industry is the opportunity I have to hear how companies are doing product research and bringing new tech to market. My guest, today, Deena Ghazarian is an especially delightful person to talk to about those topics because she is a vital part of the TargetPath team - an accelerator that helps tech startups and established technology companies get started, scale, and become successful faster. One of the things I love about working in the Consumer Technology industry is the opportunity I have to learn how companies are doing product research and bringing new technologies to market. My guest on this episode is Deena Ghazarian, an especially delightful person to talk to about those topics because she is a vital part of the TargetPath team - an accelerator that helps tech startups get started, scale, and become successful faster. In this conversation Deena and I were able to talk about a number of fascinating topics such as how the TargetPath team has been on the front lines of the “smart city” movement, helping the city of New York establish and implement its smart city program. We also spoke about innovative ways startups and established tech companies alike are using Kickstarter and Amazon to do product research and set their companies up for success. Deena is a smart, accomplished professional who brings years of experience to the consumer tech industry. I know you’re going to benefit from hearing what she shares on this episode. This company is on the leading edge of implementing smart city tech in the 5 boroughs of New York City One of the exciting tech projects Deena and the TargetPath team has been involved in lately is the LinkNYC project. They’ve helped remove every payphone in the city with gleaming silver kiosks (called “Links) that contain Wi-Fi beacons, mobile device chargers, and informational tablets for users. The goal is to have at least 4,550 of these units spread across the five boroughs by the year 2020. Deena says consumer tech is not just about headphones and smart speakers, it’s also about connecting consumers of city services to those services in ways that are beneficial and efficient. It’s an amazing project and a look into the future of what consumer tech companies will be working on more and more as we move forward. Equipping Sol Republic to go from $0 to $65M in just over 3 years You may have seen one of the “Soundtrack of Life” video clips featuring Olympic champion Michael Phelps. They were created by a headphone brand called Sol Republic. The company was founded in 2011 and Deena and the TargetPath team were instrumental in the product research and analysis, product development, launch, and management of the brand from the beginning. Today Sol Republic is one of the fastest growing audio brands in its category. Speaking about Michael as a member of the promotional team, Deena says, “Michael did it for his love of music and what Sol Republic stood for. It was a very interesting model where he wanted to be associated with what was cool, so we were very lucky to have Michael as part of the team.” In Deena’s description of this success story, you’ll hear the key role an advisory team like TargetPath can have in the product research and development of a successful brand. It’s a strategy more brands will likely be adopting in the future. When your product is your baby, it’s hard to hear how it might be ugly Startup founders often have a hard time seeing why consumers are not going to fall in love with their product idea in the same way they have. It’s their beautiful baby, but Deena points out that apart from hard work and strategic planning, the consumer is not going to adopt it. Along that line, it’s easy to think that if the product could only be promoted effectively to a big retailer like Best Buy, everything else would work itself out. But the truth is that those big retailers are going to rightfully demand that the product is a quality product consumers will not only relate to but also like. That’s why it’s better to build a distribution channel strategy that can deliver the best product for the end consumer. Deena says, “If you jump ahead of that process too quickly, it, unfortunately, can be the downfall of your baby.” Learn why good product and consumer research and strategic distribution can make or break even the most innovative consumer tech products, on this episode with Deena Ghazarian. Kickstarter and Amazon are great sources of honest feedback for startups The tendency is to think that Kickstarter and Indiegogo are for startups, but there’s actually a great opportunity for established brands to use those platforms to get the feedback they need. With good feedback, they are able to iterate and adapt their products to consumer needs and demands. A company can learn whether or not customers will engage with the product story, what the price point should be, and how the product is going to fly long-term. Amazon is a great model to utilize for product research and development as well. The reason is that the reviews given on products in the Amazon ecosystem are honest reviews. Nothing is held back, so companies can listen to that feedback and make changes as a result. Deena points out how less commonly considered things, like packaging, can become focal-points for changes simply because of the consumer feedback received. She says, “They’ll tell you if you’re not doing anything to stand out. Launching a product via Kickstarter or other crowd funding source is a great way to validate a market/product and raise funds for your production run.  I recently raised over $16,000 and in this episode I share all the strategies I used to hit my goal.  The interesting part of this, is that I was able to do it in just 30 days as a side project.

Peter Cox is a successful professional landscape photographer based in Co. Cork in Ireland. He is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help publish his second book—"Atlantic Light". To say it has been a huge success so far would be an understatement—like saying the summit of K2 is a bit of a walk. Peter is no stranger to Kickstarter success. His previous book campaign was almost 400% funded and he is on track to repeat that this time round. In this episode of The Documentary Photographer Podcast, Peter talks about what you need to run a successful Kickstarter campaign and explains what went into his latest book project. Peter is also an early adopter of drone technology for his photography and his latest book will feature photographs taken exclusively from the air. From Podcast to Movement Today’s episode of In The Trenches features Timothy Lawson of Veteran’s Empire and the founder of 1, 2 Many: Veteran Suicide - which is a podcast series telling the stories of veteran suicide. Tim’s story of starting work with Veteran’s Empire is an encouraging tale that shows us success is a matter of breaking out of the mold, taking bold action, and ultimately doing the work. Lawson, a prior service Marine, is completing his Broadcast Journalism degree at American University, while working with Veteran’s Empire and 1, 2 Many Veteran Suicide. If it resonates with you, please share this podcast and help spread the word. Life as a Veteran Timothy Lawson served five years in the USMC, including a short stint in the Moscow US Embassy. Currently completing a Broadcast Journalism degree at American University as a full-time student, Tim hosts the Veteran’s Empire podcast and is creating the 1, 2 Many Soldier Suicide project, as well. Tim says he got started in Veteran’s Empire by volunteering to help with their social media. “I was getting out of the Marine Corp, had a blog called A Couple Good Ideas, focused on healthy aspects of relationship.” Later, he offered to help Veteran’s Empire with their social media, “I just thought that Veteran’s Empire needed a podcast.” Starting the podcast without permission (the result of Tim Ferris’ Four Hour Work Week) “instead of asking them if I could do the podcast, I just started doing one and I jut put their name on it.” The organization gave no resistance, “they thought it was a great idea and thy pretty much told me to run with it, keep everything in line with the mission of Veteran’s Empire.” Tim says he launched that podcast about the same time as when Cliff Ravenscraft arrived on the scene. The show organically grew in influence and in guest credibility. “It went from talking to my friends on the show to reaching out and getting guests that had a name,” he says. Tim found Veteran’s Empire after a fellow Marine sent him the logo. As soon as he got the logo he knew it would be huge. “So I asked to get involved. Somehow I actually started running their Twitter. That’s how I actually got involved with Veteran Empire to begin with,” telling them, “you need a social media presence, no one’s running your Twitter, let me run that.” Becoming a Podcaster Tim says he’s launched a total of five podcasts, with four currently being updated. With the Veteran’s Empire podcast, Tim says he was completing a podcast when he came to the realization that “this is what I should be doing… I continue to pursue it more than anything else in my life.” Since that time, Tim has created Romantic Comedy - a weekly podcast, which gave birth to the Capital Experience, which gave birth to the 1, 2 Many Veteran Suicide project. About three weeks into his work with Veteran’s Empire Tim started podcasting. The first rendition of the podcast was, in Tim’s word, “success-esque” - inspired by the Tim Ferris book Four Hour Work Week. Saying he realized the value of Veteran’s Empire “if we promoted veterans and what they were doing.” “Back then,” he continues, “there was no other podcast that was focusing and promoting veterans specifically in their post-military career.” After creating the podcast, before even having been approved by Veteran’s Empire, "I kept going with it, and as soon as the guys at Veteran Empire realized how much more attention they brand was getting through the podcast, I quickly became … officially a member of Veteran Empire." Tom says the story is a great lesson for entrepreneurs. “Be proactive about that kind of stuff,” Tom says. Tim says he started interviewing friends who were doing cool stuff, “I didn’t have to go very far to get a guest.” Then people started recommending guests to him before he reached out to Marine Aaron Chaffs of Love and the Wild. “I thought it would be fun to talk to a reality TV star, and he responded back to me, which I didn’t expect at first. That interview was the first bridge that I had ever been connected between my world and the entertainment world." Tim  didn’t realize that people were so easily approachable. Later, Tim landed Marine veteran Shannon Ihrke, who’s now the Loop Rock Girl in Chicago and has been in and on the cover of Maxim Magazine. "When I got her on the show and the guys (at Veteran Empire) realized that one, I was able to reach people that were in a sense inspiring in the veteran community, and two, the people I was getting in touch with were either successful or on their way to becoming successful, that affiliation had a lot of power." Shannon’s return to the show after her success was when he says he realized the real value in building a strong network. Another celebrity who has demonstrated the respect others have for Veteran Empire is UFC fighter Tim Kennedy. "He does plenty of interviews, but it still looks good for us for him to come interview with us…. when I ask an author or model, or something like that, while they’re still an amateur, and they move on to become a professional, they’re going to speak really well on us, and it’s going to look good for use to have that affiliation,” Tim says. 1, 2 MANY PROJECT Tim says he started the 1, 2 Many project while waling around the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. “I started thinking — for some reason, veteran suicide was on my mind — just the stats and how the media was covering the 22 a day, 1 an hour… .it was right around the tim when the first leg of the V.A. scandal really hit mass media and that was a big thing.” Saying the VA crisis started to bug him, Tim says he became concerned that “no one was talking about practical solutions to this. It was like we were overcomplicating the whole thing.” Saying he decided to create a podcast “because i’m not going to go run a 5K and think it’s going to save someone’s life,” Tim describes what he thought 1, 2 Many would be like. Using Kickstarter to help fund the original project, intended to conduct interviews during college Summer Break, Tim used the Kickstarter campaign to get the word out about his project and then used the funds to support himself during the summer while he traveled all summer to conduct the interviews. “The project was happening, whether Kickstarter got funded or not. It was just the matter of the level in which is was going to happen." Since started the project, Tim says several changes have been made from the original program to what it is today. 1, 2 Many launched in June 2014, with his own story of personal battled with suicidal behavior. “Every Monday since,” Tim says, “a new story has come out, whether it’s been a veteran who experienced suicidal behavior and how they got out of it where they sit down now, or it’s been a friend of a family member who lost a veteran to suicide.” Tim says his Kickstarter campaign attracted the attention of the American Legion Auxiliary. “They heard that I was doing this project and they had a conference coming up in three weeks, and wanted me to find someone in the D.C. area who had lost a veteran who’d be willing to come up and speak.” Lawson explained to the program official that three weeks was not enough time to arrange such appearances, and that most who had recently gone through such loss or struggle probably wasn't ready to go public. So, he tells them, “how about you just have me come up and talk, I’ve talked to a bunch of veterans, and I’m doing this project.” With the validation of his Kickstarter campaign, Tim was invited to the conference, “and I’ve raised thousands of dollars behind this project and there’s obviously an audience ready for this.” Results of the 1, 2 Many Podcast Tim explains that the evaluation of his podcast, 1, 2 Many, is one of the objective evaluations of his business. “From what I’ve learned, simple things save lives. And, when I tell you these three things, you’re going to wonder why we’re not doing more of this. This is stuff, these three things that I preach to my live audiences and through the podcast, that I believe that we could use to really save, not only the veterans, but the people around us, from depression and suicide.” Stating he learned these three things and their effectiveness as he’s had some more experience with military personnel who have struggled, Tim says one of the three things is empathy. “Most people actually just want you to understand that they're sad, and they want to make sure that it’s ok for them to be sad.” He says it’s ok for vets to be sad if transitions back to civilian life have been difficult, “and, even though your friends around you look like they’ve been successful coming out of the military, there’s a chance they’re experiencing the same thing, so you should not feel like you’re isolated in this frustration.” Empathy is something which should be shared with others even before there’s any sign of suicide, says Lawson. Second, Lawson says he has learned, as a result of his 1, 2 Many podcast, is renewed purpose. This is very important, according to Lawson, because when soldiers separate from the military, it’s hard to find a position that will make them feel as important and depended upon as when they were in uniform. “When I was an E-2 or E-3,” he says, “I had more responsibility than I did in any of my jobs when I first got out of the military.” He says that lack of a sense of responsibility, or feeling that someone is depending on you is detrimental to a soldier’s psyche. The third thing Tim Lawson says he’s learned through talking to soldiers, their families and experts about soldier suicide is that soldiers need mentorship, “on both sides,” he says. The advice is something any business coach or business person will tell you - it’s good to have a mentor, and it’s good to be a mentor. “so why aren’t we suggesting people who are getting out of the military find a mentor?” he asks. Advice for Struggling Soldiers Tim says it’s important for a soldier to focus on those things that make them feel good. Relying on advice from James Altucher, Tim says “if you don’t feel good, think about what makes you feel good. If it’s laughter, maybe watch some stand-up comedy.” Tim says depressed soldiers need to find ways to get away from just focusing on the negative aspects of life. “If you realize this is the way you’re doing down, it’s not easy to tell someone what’s going on in your life, it really isn’t,” he says, “I would never discount that… but there are things that you can do to let people know that you need a little bit of help, or you need some more involvement that could really benefit you.” One of the ways you can find happiness is through a hobby. Tim refers to Ralph Randolph from the Discovery TV show, “Devil’s Riot’. “He was on a panel we did in Nashville, and he talked briefly on motorcycle clubs, and how a lot of veterans join motorcycle clubs because they’re given a role inside that club.” He says even if that role is Treasurer and they have to balance a checkbook once a week, the soldier knows they have a task to accomplish and that the other guys in the club are spending on them to do it. Lawson says it puts them back in a unit. “We don’t have to wait for signs of suicide to intervene, we can provide empathy, sense of purpose and mentoring long before we see depression.” Advice for Friends and Family of Struggling Soldiers For those who love the soldier that’s struggling, Tim offers some advice as well. “If you know that a veteran… anybody… comes out, and they’re processing out of the military, talk to them. “Ask them what their kids like to do in their spare time. Show interest in their life outside of military. If there’s one thing people who are suffering mentally and emotionally dont’ want, is for that to be the focus of attention.” “If I came to you and said, ‘hey, I’m going through some emotional things and I’m starting to contemplate some scary stuff,’ I don’t want the next five times of you and I interacting, for that to be the first thing that you bring up. That’s just going to drive me nuts.” He says the lines of communication will collapse and drive their self-esteem even lower because of how they think you perceive them. He suggests that you ask all sorts of different questions, in order to get them talking and thinking about something else. He reminds those loved ones, “you don’t have to be a superhero or a therapist. Or be able to admit that you need help. There’s a lot of proactive ways to be doing this, and they’re things I believe we should be doing long before we see emotional and mental stress.” The Future of 1,2 Many Podcast Tim says he will continue to tell powerful stories of soldiers struggling with suicidal tendencies. “Mondays are the stories. Wednesdays, I share a short essay I’ve written on my thoughts on suicide, whether they’re in my personal life or the observations that I’ve made through the conversations and interviews that I’ve had. "Go get some fucking hate mail." I thought we we're going to talk about hats. I never expected the conversation to bloom into that... Satya Twena saved one of New York's last operating millenary (hat making) factories. Using KickStarter she realized $174,000 in crowd funding. A friend was able to loan her the difference for the cost of the equipment. She found herself the owner of a Manhattan based factory with $30,000 a month in overhead. At the time, she had $1,000 dollars to her name. During our interview she explained the mentality that carried her through, "All of the sudden, you're opening up the universe to the fact that you're open to receiving so much more than you are capable of assuming you deserve." It takes bravery to open space for true intentions. I believe her bravery is and important component of her business mastery. Artists Casey Sheppard (a jeweler) and Evan Reinheimer (a photographer) join Connie to talk about their experiences using Kickstarter.com to fund their art projects. Casey's project raised funds to enable her to participate in the Cherry Creek Art Festival this summer and Evan is currently fundraising to finance a trip to Australia. Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others. Kickstarter.com is a social funding platform for individuals working on creative projects. Using Kickstarter, anyone can pledge money towards a project that they feel is worthy however only projects that reach a certain funding goal within a certain time period will actually result in a pledge being paid out. I recently launched a new Kickstarter pledge drive to raise funds for a documentary project that I hope to do in Haiti in February of 2011. You can learn more about this project by visiting:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1544246638/ile-a-vache-haiti-a-roadmap-forwardFunding any project like this is costly which is why I have turned to using Kickstarter as a way to connect with people (in a light touch sort of way) and hopefully raise the funds necessary to make this project work. In addition: Anyone who makes a pledge of $50 or more receive a 5″x7″ (approx. size) archival print from the project Anyone who makes a pledge of $75 or more will receive an 8″x10″ (approx. size) archival print from the project Anyone who makes a pledge of $100 or more will receive an 10″x13″ (approx size) archival print from the project I'm hoping you will be able to pledge (any amount would be wonderful) but I fully understand if you are unable to assist at this time. Even if you are unable to help support this project, I hope you will check back on my web site in the Spring of 2011 to see the results. The deadline for raising funds is December 31st, 2010 at midnight (EST).
