I'm 35, from Washington, D.C., and my sobriety date is August 28th, 2020.  I grew up in an American military family. Looking back, I started displaying signs of addiction at a very early age. Early in childhood, my parents divorced; I grew up fast, experimented young, and struggled to find my identity and purpose in life.By 16, I began partying often. When my peers stopped or moved on, I was looking for the next “scene” and the next group of friends that accepted my lifestyle without judgment or questions. By nothing short of a miracle, I made it to adulthood. I fell in love, had a beautiful child, and shortly after his birth, I was diagnosed with Stage II Lymphoma. After 6 months of chemotherapy, I came out on the other side. Nevertheless, I struggled with an endless search to reveal why I survived, what incredible thing was I destined to do that granted this second chance? Shame for disappointing the universe and my perception of higher purpose reverted me to the only thing I knew to cope with- substance abuse.I retreated into my disease quickly. I lost relationships, engaged in risky behavior over and over, and continued to down a shame spiral perpetuated by my addiction. At the height of it, I was drinking from the moment I woke up; to the moment I went to bed and stopped loving myself.   In August 2020, I checked myself into detox and I've been in recovery ever since. Through meetings, my program, and my sober support network, I have a life I never thought possible, and that I finally believe I deserve. I love myself more than I ever thought possible. Our journey is JUST AS important as our destination, and Desi is a brilliant example of that.Desi spent most of her adolescence burring the trauma of childhood sexual abuse; at 18 years old, her trauma would no longer stay hidden, and she was forced to face it head-on. Through addiction, suicide attempts, self-harm, and restrictive eating, Desi has continued to hang on. This episode is powerful, not simply for her resilience and strength to speak openly, but also because Desi is very much still in the trenches of mental illness and all that has come with her childhood abuse. She shares her story today in hopes of reminding others - you are not alone. We cannot express how deeply grateful we are for this conversation, and we know you will be, too

He was depressed, bored, unfulfilled and felt hopeless in the world around him, somehow he became open to spirituality, the ideas and beliefs he found, suddenly made sense and everything quickly changed. Cody never believed in spirituality nor the idea that we're all connected, he didn't practiced meditation, yoga, or breath work, spent no time reading or enjoying nature - but, after his spiritual awakening, he does it all. Was his awakening simply a random coincidence? Or was this a moment in the making for the past 39 years? We talk about how it happened and what it looks like. The most important thing of all?? Finding self-love and understanding ones limiting beliefs. If you're unhappy, unfulfilled, looking for a change, or just interested in spiritual awakenings, this episode is for you!

There are days where it is still hard to breathe but thankfully those are fewer and further between as the healing all around continues. But the only thing I think about, and what motivates me today is to show up, day in and day out, and be the parent I needed as a child - for my kids and for myself.
