Animal rights group PETA has launched a campaign calling on the Brisbane Broncos to retire their live horse mascot, Buck. The Broncos have responded, stating, "We have no plans to retire Buck." PETA Asia-Pacific Campaign Manager, Abigail Forsyth, told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "It's really simple that just live animals don't belong at sporting events. And forcing a horse like Buck into a stadium full of bright lights and screaming fans, loud noises. It's a terrifying and distressing experience for that animal." "Our main ask is to retire Buck. But there are also other things that the team can do and the name and imagery that the team uses glorifies rodeos. And rodeos are an industry built on animal fear and pain and we're simply asking them to leave the rodeo imagery behind." "Why not embrace a new name that has no animal cruelty attached?" Ms Forsyth continued. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

More of Paul McCartney and his political notions. Animal Rights, Gun Violence, "No More Landmines", and the environment have been a big part of the "McCartney brand" for the last 30-35 years. We continue from last week, as we touch on nearly a full album of political thought from "the cute Beatle", and how Paul's brand of radicalism was both similar and different to that of his bandmate John Lennon.

Academy Award-winning vegan filmmaker and former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos joins us to share how he is using the power of storytelling to spark transformation for animal rights, human health, and environmental conservation. Highlights include: How The Cove, his Oscar-wining documentary and the first documentary to sweep all the film guilds, inspired activism that helped reduce dolphin and porpoise slaughter in Japan by over 90%; How his team's audacious projection events of endangered species on iconic buildings including The Empire State Building, The United Nations and The Vatican for their film Racing Extinction, received over 5.4 billion media views and led to laws that protect some of Earth's most endangered animals; How his third film, The Game Changers, a film about plant-based super athletes that exposes the myth that meat is necessary for protein, strength, and optimal health, triggered a 350% spike in online searches within a month of premiering on Netflix; What his Netflix Series, You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment, uncovered about the 8-week health benefits of plant-based eating, and how the results went viral; His most recent film Mission: Joy a buddy film starring his Holiness, The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu about how to find joy in a world of sorrow has been seen by 10's of millions of people around the globe; Where Louie's focus is turning next: a new film exposing the destructive health impacts of plastic. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings. Send us a text In a rare convergence of literature and hardcore ethos, The Vulgar Display of Podcast recently welcomed Karl Buechner of Earth Crisis, Freya, and Apocalypse Tribe and along with co-authors Keith Ward and Jeremy Mueller, to discuss their debut novel, The Unraveling: The Council of Crows. This middle-grade fantasy adventure is more than just a story—it's a decade-long project that evolved from a short story into a fully realized trilogy. The book drops May 5, 2025, with a limited hardcover edition available on Earth Day (April 22) via 3rd World Studios. The Council of Crows is crafted with the heart of three lifelong creatives who've spent over ten years meeting weekly to bring this story to life. It weaves humor, adventure, and timeless themes of animal rights and environmentalism into an engaging narrative tailored for young readers aged 8-12.“This book is a love letter to Earth,” said Beechner during the interview. “It reflects who we are—not just as artists, but as people. It's dedicated to the loved ones we've lost, and it's a call for compassion, kindness, and change.”The trio's “three-tier process” of writing involved brainstorming, independent drafting, and collective refinement, allowing each voice to shine through while delivering a unified message. Though the writing process spanned years, the team agrees the hardest part was knowing when it was “done.”They describe the book as the first in a three-part series, with the next two entries planned over the next three years. And while the story stands strong on its own, it's also deeply personal—an expression of grief, hope, and growth. For environmental activists, or those looking for impactful stories for the next generation, The Unraveling: The Council of Crows promises to be a powerful bridge between hardcore legacy and hopeful storytelling.Stay tuned. The crows are gathering.Karl also touched on Earth Crisis' upcoming tour with Judge and Integrity, hitting both coasts later this year. The band will also travel to England and Western Europe, while Karl's other project, Freya, embarks on an Eastern European tour.Following the well-received Fight as One album, the band continues to uphold its tradition of challenging norms and promoting alternative perspectives. The podcast reflects on the band's enduring legacy and their ability to bridge music, message, and now literature.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. In today's episode of the Truth Wanted, Jon the Skeptic and Drew Bekius take a dive into animal rights before realizing the dive was deep enough to encounter octopi of potential alien origins.Connor in UT would like to know the hosts' opinions on animal rights being an extension of human rights. Jon mentions the struggle associated with soy allergies when going to a plant based diet. As Drew emphasizes the importance of this conversation, he describes the need to exercise mindfulness and gratefulness towards other beings on the planet. What is the best option for animal testing? How can the pain and harm be minimized?Dee in IA says that farmed animals in the future need to reside with local farmers where farm animals are bred for food. If dogs are bred for fighting, does that make it right? What does ethical farming mean and how do we explore these practices? Would it be cool for aliens to come down and have a human farm because we are so tasty? If an animal is bred for a certain purpose, what would make that purpose ethical? Though Industry and employment are important, they are not the right reasons to keep this in practice. Jon in Canada saw a plate move all by itself after having a conversation about ghosts. What is your best explanation for this? How do you go about getting all the information before making the conclusion that it was caused by a ghost? Sometimes taking the position of not knowing is the way to go.John in OH says that he can prove there is no afterlife because the mind is a separate substance from the body and consciousness is a property of the brain that can be turned off. If the mind is a process of the brain that stops when the brain dies, why is this important to theists?Dan in Canada wonders if the awesomeness and weirdness of octopi indicates they might be from other planets. Are there other connections that go beyond this category? How would the disconnect be explained between the animal kingdom and Cephalopods if there are in fact disconnections? How convinced are you that the octopus is not of earth origin?Thank you for tuning in! Kelley Laughlin, our backup host, joins us to close out the show. Don't look for restraint here, things are about to get wild! This week's comic is the Tarzan-influenced The Witcher: Wild Animals, a twist-filled blend of circle-of-life philosophy, extreme veganism and frighteningly feral action that left us wanting more…whiskey. Fortunately, we've paired it with the superbly simian Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt, a sweet, straightforward scotch that kept the conversation from getting too civilized. After all, when there are important things to discuss like whether drowners smell like fish, why mothers should handle their own homicides, if Geralt should ask for a refund on his armor and whether there's ever a good reason for a man to drop trou while relieving himself, we wouldn't want something as silly as good behavior getting in the way.

In 1975, philosopher Peter Singer argued for the end of tyranny by human animals over non-human animals. His book "Animal Liberation," has been an ethical compass for several generations of animal rights activists. In this conversation with Emil Guillermo, Singer talks about the changes in the last five decades, how his book helped bring about those changes, and how there's still much work to do to convince society that speciesism is wrong. We are honored to have a legend on the podcast today, Seth Tibbott founded Turtle Island Foods in 1980, now the “Tofurky Company.” For 15 years Seth pursued his dream as a pioneer of the early plant-based foods movement. In 1995, Seth introduced the first nationally marketed vegan holiday roast named “Tofurky” which soon became the most well-known meat alternative brand in the US. Tofurky is now a household word (even spell check knew what I was trying to type!) It has been mentioned on numerous TV shows, including The X-Files, The Tonight Show, and even as the answer to a $400 question on Jeopardy. Seth has chronicled his “40-year overnight success story” in a new book, In Search of the Wild Tofurky. On this episode, Seth talks about the history of plant based foods in the US (going back farther then you think!) as well as the history of the iconic Tofurky. He then takes us into the future as well with innovations in mock meats with advances like alt protein fermentation and 3D printed steak! Our patriarchal culture animalizes women and sexualizes animals, and without compulsory pregnancy among human and nonhuman females, both patriarchy and animal agriculture would fail. Carol Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegan Critical Theory, joins us. Highlights include: How Carol got started on her personal journey to veganism; Why patriarchal cultures associate masculinity with meat-eating and how women and animals become ‘absent referents'; Why feminism and veganism have a long history of deep interconnection; How sexism persists in the animals rights movement; Why a vegan diet is a daily act of anti-oppressive resistance. On today's episode, knowing that 2 of her remaining 3 foster kittens in her care will be adopted the following day, Saige shares what it feels like to anticipate saying goodbye. She shares why this goodbye feels less nerve-wracking than saying goodbye to their brother previously. Every day, billions of people consume animal products without considering the impact on their health, the environment, and animals. Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, celebrated advocate and bestselling author, dedicates her life to unraveling this disconnection. Known as the "Joyful Vegan," she has transformed countless lives through her books, podcasts, and innovative approaches to promoting compassion and ethical living. On the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Colleen shared her personal journey and the pivotal moments that shaped her commitment to a plant-based lifestyle. From her early experiences to her groundbreaking projects, Colleen offers a blueprint for creating a more compassionate world. The Social Disconnect: Why Compassion Is Suppressed From childhood, most people are taught to love animals through stories, toys, and films. Yet, these same animals often appear on dinner plates, leading to a subconscious compartmentalization of compassion. This societal norm not only numbs empathy but also perpetuates harm on a massive scale. Colleen explores this phenomenon in her work, helping people recognize and reconcile this internal conflict. Pivotal Moments: The Journey to Advocacy Colleen's journey began with a profound awakening sparked by reading Diet for a New America by John Robbins and later Slaughterhouse by Gail Eisnitz. These books exposed the grim realities of industrial farming and the culture of violence it perpetuates. These experiences led her to align her values with her actions, igniting her passion for advocating for animals and ethical living. A Multi-Faceted Approach to Advocacy Through her seven bestselling books, including The Joyful Vegan, and her long-running Food for Thought podcast, Colleen provides practical tools and inspiration for those seeking to make more compassionate choices. Her Joyful Vegan Trips further illustrate how plant-based living can be abundant, joyful, and culturally enriching, breaking down myths about veganism being restrictive or inaccessible. Upcoming Projects and Expanding Impact Colleen's upcoming book, A Year of Compassion: 52 Weeks of Living Zero Waste, Plant-Based, and Cruelty-Free, set to release in March 2025, is a comprehensive guide for anyone seeking to live more ethically and sustainably. This work reflects her ongoing commitment to empowering individuals with knowledge and practical steps to align their values with their daily lives. A Call to Action Colleen's message is simple yet powerful: Start where you are. Change doesn't have to be all or nothing. Small, consistent steps toward reducing harm and embracing compassion can lead to transformative outcomes for individuals, animals, and the planet. Humanity and the gods of natureDo animals and nature have an ethical life of their own? Must, or should, we extend our morality to non-human entities, or are their limits to notions of ethics?Tune in to hear three world-famous philosophers on ethical issues discuss these questions from their different perspectives: Peter Singer has made a name for himself defending the rights and feelings of all sentient creatures; Slavoj Zizek enjoys turning established ideas on their head; and Nancy Sherman always brings insights from her beloved Aristotle and the stoics. The discussion is at times rigorous and philosophical, and other times provocative and fun. We have it in us to create a more beautiful, regenerative future that allows both humans and nonhumans to flourish. Dr. Sarah Bexell, professor of social work and co-founder of the Center for a Regenerative Future at the University of Denver, joins us. Highlights of our conversation include: Why captive breeding programs for endangered species are both cruel and ineffective; How the mental health of both conservation professionals and animal rights activists is deeply impacted by the ongoing suffering of both wild animals and farmed animals; How ongoing ecological destruction is causing eco-anxiety and eco-distress in students and some of the more effective classroom approaches to address it; How environmental justice differs from ecological justice and why we need to address both if we hope to create a more just, regenerative future; How Sarah helps students become aware of the role that human overpopulation plays in humanity's ecological overshoot and helps make the classroom a comfortable place to discuss it.
