Darren and Daniel reassess Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi. Spoilers, the movie is a riff roaring good time. Enjoy!
The debate has already begun online about whether the story choices made by J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio for The Rise of Skywalker enhance or undo the events of Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi. Personally, after my first viewing, I think it's pretty clear that what Abrams and company did is perfectly in line with what Johnson and company did. So on today's episode, I'm going to talk about four of the most ardently discussed aspects of The Last Jedi - the death of Supreme Leader Snoke, Luke's lighsaber toss, Luke's self-exile, and Leia's Force use to get back on the Raddus - that were ultimately supported and reinforced by the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Not long after The Rise of Skywalker panel at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, J.J. Abrams revealed in interviews that they met with George Lucas prior to writing the script for Episode IX. That may sound like a big deal (and it is, for reasons I'll explain), but we need to remember that he was consulted about this movie long before Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi debuted. It's episode 123...and this isn't going to go the way you think. It's nearly Christmas and that can only mean one thing - Disney have started up the Star Wars machine and churned out another episode of our favourite far, far away franchise. Set your phasers to lightspeed! Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi (2017) finds us once again following Rey, Finn, Poe, Ren and Luke, as well as some characters with more than one syllable in their names, as they venture across the galaxy to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and to boldly go where no Star Wars has gone before. We pick apart every controversy, plot twist and fanboy meltdown, eulogise over Adam Driver, suggest a change in tact for TIE fighters, and Joe once again manages to crowbar in some discussion of his veganism for good measure. All of which leads to one question...how would you survive? Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: we are the spark, that will light the fire, that will start the blaze, that will ignite the inferno, that will heat the coals, that will generate the heat, that will fan the flames that will burn the First Order down. If 2015’s “The Force Awakens” was an explicit attempt to resurrect the rousing adventure and sly humor of the original Star Wars, then it was reasonable to assume that the latest installment in the franchise - Rian Johnson's THE LAST JEDI - might follow in the footsteps of the series’ darkest chapter: “The Empire Strikes Back.” On this week’s show, Adam and Josh discuss a film that finds clever ways to acknowledge what has come before, while making a mark as a fresh, stylish and distinct new entry in the saga.
