New episode out now! We take a semi-detour to a galaxy far, far away with the season three episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Sphere of Influence”. We debate the role of the Jedi within the Republic and talk about how they serve as diplomats, law enforcement, security, advisors, monks, or investigators whenever the need arises. We discuss how this show is for children and therefore the “mystery” is highly simplified, think the tone can swing wildly between Saturday Morning Cartoon and complicated political intrigue, pick apart the sequel trilogy at length, and are mildly amused by the George Lucas self-insert character. We also talk about bonkers Star Wars nomenclature, think it is interesting that this episode dealt with the blocking of trade routes and frustration with a slow democratic process, and lament the oversaturation and corporatization of Star Wars media as a whole. Katy forgot about LEGOs, Carrie is haunted by images of dismemberment, Maddy has a skeleton friend, and Mack does a lot of explaining (and justifying). We also are very confused by the abundance of mismatched accents, touch on the topic of gender in a galaxy full of different alien species, discuss how sci-fi / fantasy mysteries are harder to judge as they have different rules, and Mack runs a mini-game where we try to differentiate between real and fake character names. Star Wars Zero Company feels like the Star Wars I grew up with. Not the movies—the LucasArts games, the X-Wing novels, the trading card game. The old Expanded Universe, where stories happened inside the galaxy instead of orbiting the Skywalkers.Zero Company is a tactical, turn-based game set during the Clone Wars, but the interesting part isn't the war. It's the crew: a scoundrel with a personal moral compass, a Separatist partisan who lectures you about Republic imperialism, a discharged clone trooper carrying the weight of the war, and a rhyming toad-bulldog prizefighter who loves opera. The game never tells you which choice is right. It just asks you to pick.In this episode of One Thing Worth A Rant, I argue that the Jedi have become the most boring part of Star Wars—not because they're bad, but because Light vs Dark always drags the story back to a struggle we've exhausted. The sequels mistook the original story for what made the original world compelling. The prequels, ironically, were reaching for something more interesting: a democracy sliding into authoritarianism through ordinary choices about order, security, and obedience.Zero Company, Andor, The Bad Batch, even Galaxy's Edge work because they point the camera down—away from the mythic, toward the everyday. Devon made the wise decision not to join us this week, which leaves Ben and Steven unsupervised to talk about Star Trek, Star Wars, Linux, AI, and what exactly we should expect from the "free" software we use. Real Life Ben kicks things off with more Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, including a new episode that he loved…and the rest of his family absolutely did not. Apparently soap-opera Star Trek is officially a thing now, and that sends us down the inevitable rabbit hole of Trek lore, timelines, and the increasingly complicated ways all the different series connect to one another. There's also some good news from the world of science fiction: John Scalzi won the 2026 Hugo Award for Best Series for Old Man's War. Scalzi celebrated the win over on his blog, where he seems appropriately delighted to bring home yet another little rocket. Read John Scalzi's "Suddenly: Hugo!" post Steven, meanwhile, has been watching the numbers on last week's episode, which has climbed to 124 views on YouTube. That leads directly into a question we probably shouldn't be asking on this particular podcast: Should AI be writing our episode titles? If it comes up with better titles than we do, is that good? Bad? Embarrassing? All three? The Science Faction Podcast on YouTube Steven also has about ten hours in Star Wars: Zero Company, and so far, it's excellent. For X-COM fans in particular, there's a lot to like here. Set during the Clone Wars, the game digs into corners of the Star Wars universe without feeling like it's simply throwing familiar things onto the screen for the sake of recognition. It understands the setting, uses it well, and so far feels like a great fit for the tactical strategy formula. Star Wars: Zero Company on Steam Future or Now Then Ben asks the question that sends us straight into the Linux lake: What is Omarchy, who is it actually for, and why did Steven decide to jump in? Omarchy That turns into a much broader conversation about Linux, open-source software, Twitter/X, vibecoded slop, and the appeal of actually taking control of the computer sitting on your desk. Modern computers are extraordinarily capable machines, but most of us interact with them through a relatively narrow collection of applications and interfaces. What happens when you start digging underneath all of that and customizing the machine around the way you want to use it? There's an important distinction, though, between being willing to experiment with something yourself and recommending that someone else do the same thing. Steven can mess around with Linux because he has another computer available if everything goes sideways. Having spare hardware, free time, and enough technical experience to troubleshoot problems is a privilege that changes the equation considerably. And that brings us to an even bigger question: Who should we actually support when it comes to "free" software? Free and open-source software doesn't magically appear. Somebody is writing it, maintaining it, fixing bugs, answering questions, hosting infrastructure, and dealing with the endless parade of people asking why Feature X doesn't work exactly the way they want. If software gives us more control over our computers and reduces our dependence on giant technology companies, maybe "free" shouldn't automatically mean "something we should never have to pay for." This week, we're wandering through several different flavors of nerd territory: Star Trek continuity, Star Wars tactics, AI creativity, Linux experimentation, and the people quietly building the software that lets the rest of us tinker with our computers. Sean England has been at Skywalker Sound since 1993. He didn't arrive as a foley artist. He came in on the technical side, in the machine room and the transfer department, back when everything went to analog tape and film was spliced on a Kem. He calls those years his film school. He watched sound get made from one end of a picture to the other, then became a foley recordist, then a mixer, then went through the glass and became the artist.The show where he cut his teeth was The Clone Wars. There was one foley stage at the Ranch in those days, so he and Ronni Brown took the night shift and cranked the episodes out, learning to work fast and picking up the Star Wars tricks handed down from Dennie Thorpe and Jana Vance.He's very good on what the job actually is. An egg crack might be an ice cream cone. The sizzle in the pan might be a candle held under tinfoil. He's got a recording of a cattle gate on his phone that he still hasn't cracked, and then somebody gave him a metal contraption built for hanging blueprints and it turned out to be exactly the sound. He picks up leather purses in thrift shops and holds them to his ear to check for creak. Hayden Christensen has been playing Anakin Skywalker for more than twenty years, and he just said that Dave Filoni understands the character better than he does. Speaking to IMDb at D23, Hayden was asked whether he gives the writers feedback on Anakin. His answer was that he doesn't need to. He said Filoni understands this character in some ways even better than he does, and that when he reads the scripts he's just elated with what he gets to do and say. He added that Filoni is still very collaborative, that he'll share an idea if he has one, and if it works they'll do it, so nobody is too precious about things and they get to explore. That comes right as Ahsoka Season 2 is on the way. The first trailer showed Hayden playing both the Force ghost version of Anakin and the Clone Wars era Jedi, which means he's getting to work through parts of the character in both worlds...no pun intended.
