In July 2011 (14 years ago as I write this), I recorded episode 1 of Love That Album podcast. The period wasn't ground zero for podcasts, but it was still early days, and people were still asking, “What's a podcast?” At the time, there seemed to be very little in the way of music discussion shows, so I decided to create one of my own to talk about music in the same way film podcasters of the time that I enjoyed discussed films. So.....ahh....welcome to episode 1 of Love That Album – Redux. I asked Melbourne music journalist Jeff Jenkins to join me, and we had a debate over which was the better Bruce Springsteen album: The Wild, The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle or Darkness On The Edge of Town. Lengthy and poetic songs versus short and concise ones. I thought the conversation was good, but I didn't even use a proper microphone, so the sound quality was awful. I used the laptop mic and we had all the ambient noise of the room. I didn't do any editing to speak of. It's a mess. BUT I enjoyed the conversation and the process of podcasting. It meant that I had a regular means of speaking to interesting people about music...something I didn't have in my daily life – at least not to the extent I wanted. So, here we are in the mess of planet Earth in 2025. In recent times, software has been developed to clean up audio in a way we couldn't imagine. It's not just available for the likes of Peter Jackson. I had the idea to see what would happen if I ran episode 1 through the software....and to my amazement, Jeff and I sounded like we were in a proper studio with decent mics. So, following that revelation, I decided to edit the show in the same fashion I've been doing over the last few years, and put it out there for you to listen to. I thought for 5 minutes of going back to all the early episodes whose editing and sound quality grate on my nerves, but my son convinced me otherwise. He said, “don't do a George Lucas....the show evolved, and you don't want to deny its history”. I thought about it and realised he was 100% right. So what you have here is one of two episodes I'm giving the cleaning-up treatment to (the other one will be out sometime later this year).....everything otherwise stays up as it is – even the original episode 1. This is here just as an exercise on what the start could have been in 2011. Podcasting was still the domain of mostly people like me with the passion to present ideas, but without any ideas as to how to present them. I'm proud of how it started and where the show has gone. Tune in if you've never heard the episode before....or even if you have and felt pity for my approach. If you've been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens..... Love That Album is proudly part of the Pantheon Network of music podcasts. From the dawn of time, man has been fascinated by the stars and what — or more importantly, who — is out there. Unsurprisingly, from the dawn of filmmaking, Hollywood has been also been fascinated by visiting (and visitors from) other worlds. One of the earliest silent films, A Trip to the Moon, was about shooting astronauts to the moon (using a cannon) and the alien creatures they find. There are countless movies about aliens and here are four I think you should watch.Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)Roy Neary's life is turned upside-down after having a close encounter with a UFO. After being tormented by visions and a need to know more, Roy meets others experiencing the same thing and travels to Devil's Tower in Wyoming where Roy, the government, and the aliens all arrive for a monumental concert. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, and Melinda Dillion, Close Encounters of the Third Kind is one of the greatest films about alien encounters ever made. A must watch, no matter what planet you're from.Starcrash (1978)Hot on the heels of 1977's Star Wars came a wave of films “influenced” by George Lucas's masterpiece. In Starcrash, a smuggler and her alien sidekick go on a mission to rescue a prince from an evil character with a gigantic space weapon that can destroy planets. Sound familiar? Did I mention the alien sidekick uses a lightsaber? Perhaps “influenced” is too light of a word. Starcrash is not the best space opera of all time, but it's an interesting time capsule from 1978; one of many movies that also took place in a galaxy far, far away. Starcrash features great sets, a goofy plot… and David Hasselhoff. The Last Starfighter (1984)Alex Rogan wants nothing more than to escape his small town and that opportunity presents itself after he beats the world record on an arcade game called The Last Starfighter. The arcade game is actually a recruiting tool, and before long a shifty alien named Centauri arrives to take Alex to space where he will become a Starfighter — for real! Featuring (then) groundbreaking CGI, lots of alien action, and the final theatrical performance of Robert Preston.Naked Space/Spaceship/The Creature Wasn't Nice (1981)No matter what name you see this movie under, they're all the same… and none of them are good! This “horror/comedy” that loosely parodies Alien stars Leslie Nielson, Cindy Williams, Gerrit Graham, Patrick Macnee, and (writer/director) Bruce Kimmel. After exploring a newly discovered planet, the crew of the Spaceship Vertigo bring a small organism (goo) on board that quickly grows into a large monster. When Dr. Stark figures out a way to connect the monster's brain to the ship's computer, they are able for the first time to hear the monster's thoughts. And boy, is that monster hungry…Movies about aliens and outer space are always fun summer viewing. Rent one of these films and pop an extra bucket of popcorn, just in case someone from “out there” stops by to join you. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! No rendirse: seguir adelante, aunque haya dificultades. No rendirse – seguir intentándolo. On Episode #125 of Fear and Loathing in Cinema, we cracked a dozen metaphorical eggs and finally found the perfect duck. Not a perfect duck, the perfect duck: 1986's Howard the Duck, a film so strange, so inexplicable, so duck-breasted, that it could only have emerged from the mind of George Lucas during what historians now refer to as the "Post-Ewok Malaise." The lineup this week: myself (Bryan, duck-lover, genius), Dan (duck-hater, probably allergic to joy), Chelsea (convinced this film is a PSYOP), and Wade Davis (whose facial expressions alone deserve their own audio track). Together, we swim through the feathered fever dream that is Howard the Duck, a film that made so little money and ruffled so many feathers that it inadvertently hatched an empire: Pixar. Yes, really. We owe Toy Story to Howard the Duck. You're welcome, America. The post Episode #125 – Howard The Duck (1986) first appeared on Boomstick Comics.
Episode 129 – The Star Wars Influence: Live at the BFI's Film on Film Festival In this special live episode, I join Doug Weir—Remastering Lead at the BFI—and post-production veteran Paul Collard on stage for a panel titled The Star Wars Influence, recorded at the BFI's Film on Film Festival. Curated and hosted by Doug, the panel explores how George Lucas's frustrations with the Hollywood studio system led to a wave of technological innovation that forever changed the filmmaking landscape. From the creation of ILM to the invention of motion control, EditDroid, SoundDroid, and digital cinema tools, we look at how Lucas empowered a generation of problem-solvers and helped pioneer the digital workflow we now take for granted. This conversation took place just before a rare screening of Star Wars from a 35mm Technicolor dye-transfer print—an experience I'll be covering in more detail in a bonus episode coming soon. Topics include:Lucas's break from the traditional studio systemThe founding of ILM and the Dykstraflex motion control rigVistaVision, optical printers, and visual effects R&DThe origins of EditDroid and non-linear editingThe value of Technicolor dye-transfer printsLucasfilm's wider influence on Pixar, Avid, and beyondThanks again to Doug and Paul—and to the BFI for hosting such a thoughtful and inspiring event.Joe Alves Doco GoFundMeAll my links

Director Joe Johnston, who worked in design and VFX for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, is best known for effects-heavy family pics like Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, and Jumanji. But in 1999, he tried his hand at the “based on a true story” inspirational biopic genre, based on the early life of NASA engineer Homer Hickam, as told in Hickam's memoir Rocket Boys. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Chris Owen, and Laura Dern, the film tells the story of a coal miner's son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to take up rocketry with a group of friends against his father's wishes. A critical and commercial success, the anagramically-titled October Sky sounds stellar. But over two decades later, does it still shoot for the moon, or is it a dud? The Darkest Indiana Jones AdventureIn this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast, hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell dive into the controversial second installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). This prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark takes our hero to Shanghai and then India for what many consider the darkest chapter in the series. The hosts explore how the film's darker tone was influenced by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's personal lives at the time, with both going through difficult periods that affected the creative direction. Despite being considered the black sheep of the original trilogy, Temple of Doom has gained appreciation over time for its unique qualities and memorable moments.Nathan shares his childhood memory of seeing the film in theaters and covering his eyes during the infamous heart-ripping scene—the very scene that, along with Red Dawn, prompted the creation of the PG-13 rating that changed Hollywood forever. Both hosts give the film high marks (8-8.5 out of 10), placing it just below The Last Crusade in their rankings.Key topics discussed:How Temple of Doom works as a prequel set in 1935 (before Raiders)The incredible Shanghai club opening sequence and its filming challengesShort Round as one of the best sidekicks in the series who sadly never returnedKate Capshaw's performance as Willie Scott and her real-life sedatives for the bug scenesThe film's cultural insensitivity issues and how they were meant to be portrayedWhy the mine cart chase might be 20% too long but remains iconicPractical effects including stop-motion animation and early compositing techniquesIndiana Jones' character as more of an anti-hero than classic heroThe brilliant suspension bridge finale and Mola Ram as a memorable villainIn their deep cut recommendations, Nathan suggests exploring Bollywood classics like Om Shanti Om featuring Shahrukh Khan, while noting that Amrish Puri (Mola Ram) appears in the classic DDLJ. Krissy recommends checking out Ke Huy Quan's (Short Round) recent renaissance, including his Oscar-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.Whether you're covering your eyes during the heart scene or laughing at Willie's dinner reactions, Temple of Doom remains a unique, polarizing adventure that helped define 80s action cinema. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! 5 Types of Income to Create Infinite Income - AZ TRT S06 EP09 (271) 5-25-2025 What We Learned This Week Multiple Streams of Income strategy 5 Types of Income – Career, Investment, Retirement Account, Pension, Tax Free Diversification of income provides you security and freedom Build Infinite Income thru initial investment, and profits pay off loans, then go on forever George Lucas created the Star Wars IP one time, and gets infinite returns from the movies & merchandise Real Estate, Business, and Insurance products are good assets for infinite income Notes: Segment 1: The 5 Types of Income – Why One Stream Isn't Enough Opening: The Economic Shift · The economic landscape has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. · While business and technology have advanced, personal finance education and systems haven't kept pace. · Inflation has significantly eroded purchasing power. · It's no longer the 1950s where one income could support a family of four. Now, two incomes are often required—and even then, many people have a third gig. The New Normal: Side Hustles & Financial Reality · According to recent stats, 70% of people need an additional income stream, often from a side business or freelance work. · 30% of Americans hold a second job. · Among millennials, that number rises to 50%. The Lesson from Robert Allen & Rich Dad, Poor Dad · Robert Allen's Multiple Streams of Income advocated for income diversification to gain safety and freedom. · Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad emphasized acquiring income-producing assets—his favorite being real estate. The 5 Types of Income 1. Career or Business Income Your primary, day-to-day W-2 income—pays the bills and covers monthly expenses. 2. Investment Income Comes from appreciating or income-producing assets like real estate, stocks, or Bitcoin. 3. Retirement Accounts Tax-deferred income sources like IRAs or 401(k)s—subject to rules and penalties but critical for long-term planning. 4. Guaranteed Income Comes from pensions, annuities, or Social Security. Designed for lifetime income and stability. 5. Tax-Free Income Generated through Roth IRAs or cash value from life insurance. You pay tax on the seed, not the harvest. Call to Action: · Make a list of which of the five types of income you currently have. · Strategize how to build the remaining ones for a balanced, resilient financial future. Analogy: Just like a business has multiple products or a sports team has multiple ways to score, individuals should have diverse income sources to win financially. Segment 2: Infinite Income – Building Streams That Never Run Dry What Is Infinite Income? · Infinite income is ongoing, residual income that continues long after the original work or investment. · It's the financial holy grail: put in work or money once, get paid over and over. Key Assets That Can Generate Infinite Income: · Tangible Assets: Real estate, businesses, stocks · Intangible Assets: Skills, knowledge, intellectual property (IP), network Examples of Infinite Income in Action 1. Real Estate · Buy a $250K property with 10% down ($25K). · Renters pay the mortgage; property appreciates. · Refinance later, pull out your original investment tax-free. · Continue collecting rental income even after loan is paid off. · Use refinance funds to buy more properties → Repeat → Scale. 2. Business Ownership · Start or buy a business using a loan. · Profits pay off the loan, then continue to generate revenue. · Later, use the business as collateral to expand or acquire another. 3. Life Insurance (IUL Strategy) · Fund a policy over time; cash value grows tax-deferred. · Take loans against the policy tax-free—used as supplemental retirement income. · Policy can also be a legacy tool, passing on wealth tax-free. 4. Intellectual Property (IP) · George Lucas with Star Wars—created once, profits for decades from merchandise and licensing. · Jeff Bezos still profits from Amazon stock, 30 years later. · Microsoft, McDonald's, Coca-Cola—IP and systems built once, revenue continues for decades. · DC Comics still profiting off Superman IP created in the 1930s. Key Principles for Building Infinite Income · Choose the Right Assets: Real estate, businesses, IULs—not just assets that appreciate, but ones that cash flow. · Leverage and Scale: Use debt wisely to scale income-producing assets. Wealthy individuals and private equity firms use this strategy constantly. o Example: PE firms acquire HVAC companies, funeral homes, rental properties—assets that provide consistent 10%+ returns. · Use Tax Strategy to Your Advantage: o Tax-free income is more efficient. o Lowering your tax burden increases your net income immediately. o Wealthy individuals use loans, Roths, and life insurance to optimize tax efficiency. Mindset Shift: · Don't chase just “buy low/sell high” assets. Instead, acquire harvestable assets—ones that generate regular income and can appreciate. · Build cash flow now, use it to reinvest in more assets—repeat the cycle. Closing Thought: · Control three things: Assets, Income, Taxes. · Master those, and you create not just wealth—but infinite income. What's up, dudes? It's the 1985 Disney World Very Merry Christmas Parade, broadcast live on National TV! Disney connoisseurs Tim Babb from Can't Wait for Christmas and Charlie Ague from Closer to Christmas and Ague Designs are here with me to break it down!Joan Lunden and Ben Vereen host this Christmas parade with narration written by Doug Cody. The production was directed by Chico Fernandez. After some confusion with decorations, Mickey and the gang are ready to begin! Tinkerbell opened the show, and Cinderella and her entourage processed down Main Street USA. The Dumbo and the Jungle Book crews followed right behind her.The Herbie the Love Bug performers come next, and Robin Hood and his Merry Men succeeded him. Regis Philbin took us through the Living Seas, and that segment was followed by the Pinocchio float series. From a longtime Vanity Fair writer and editor, a delightfully entertaining, intelligent, and illuminating history and tribute to teen movies—from Rebel Without a Cause to Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and on to John Hughes, Mean Girls, The Hunger Games, and more. What influence did Francis Ford Coppola have on George Lucas's American Graffiti? And Lucas on John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood? How does teenage sexuality in Fast Times at Ridgemont High compare to Twilight? Which teen movies pass the Bechdel test? In this special archival episode, I speak with actor and musician Anthony Forrest, best known to Star Wars fans for playing the sandtrooper who famously waved Obi-Wan and Luke past an Imperial checkpoint with the words: “These aren't the droids we're looking for.” Originally recorded over a decade ago, this conversation explores Forrest's original casting as “Fixer” in the cut Tosche Station scenes, his time filming in Tunisia, and how George Lucas unexpectedly tapped him to suit up as a trooper. Anthony also reflects on working alongside Alec Guinness, the skepticism among the British crew, and the surreal experience of flying home with champagne and Star Wars stickers courtesy of Sir Alec himself. Beyond Star Wars, we also discuss Anthony's career in music, his time busking in the London Underground, and his low-budget feature The Ballad of Bob's Garage. Joining us in the base this week is Spencer Jawitz of the Virtual Cantina Network! Rian Johnson would be the happiest person in the world to come back and make a new Star Wars movie, but will he? In other Ryan news, Ryan Reynolds apparently pitched an R-rated Star Wars idea to Lucasfilm. We give our thoughts on that and more, including wondering whether the reason for the season, George Lucas, will appear in person at Star Wars Celebration 2027. We also talk to Spencer about how he became a Star Wars fan and what he's working on with the Virtual Cantina Network and his upcoming Boonta Eve party at Rebel Scum Con! GUYS!!!! DEBBIE SOLARIS IS HERE!!! Wow, I am deeply honored to have spent this time with the amazing Debbie Solaris. Her galactic knowledge and psychic gifts astound me, and I had a blast with her on this episode. Debbie is a renowned ET contactee and galactic historian. In this stellar (get it?) episode, she shares her fantastic journey from a traditional upbringing in a military family to becoming awakened to her star lineage through an extraterrestrial contact experience with the Arcturians. Our conversation dives into topics like the challenges faced by star seeds, galactic history, and future contact with extraterrestrial beings. Debbie also discusses her work with the Akashic records, explaining the difference between earth and galactic records, and how she helps clients connect with their cosmic origins. How funny is R2 lighting those guys on fire after whizzing oil all over them? And, yeah, that Vader shout at the end of the movie is still one of the most unintentionally hilarious moments in all of Star Wars! PLUS: Palpatine blurs out his Zoom background when making secret calls from the toilet! Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christian, Natalie Portman, Ian McDiarmid, Jimmy Smits, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Daniels, Christopher Lee, Bruce Spence, Silas Carson, Temuera Morrison, Kenny Baker, and Frank Oz as the voice of Yoda; directed by George Lucas. When the Star Wars prequels came out, they were polarizing for fans of George Lucas' beloved space opera. The three films - The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith – followed Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader. It's been 20 years since the final prequel hit theaters, so it seems like a fitting time to reevaluate the movies.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
