In The Empire Strikes Back minutes 51-55, Han and Leia share their first kiss and we meet the Emperor for the first time. Joining me (for the 4th time!) is music theorist/film musicologist Frank Lehman. We discuss the lineage of musical love themes, John Williams's distinctive Lydian signature, the strange proto-Emperor cue, and he gives us a sneak peek of the major updates he's making to the Star Wars Thematic Catalogue. This episode is also on YouTube (with visuals): https://youtu.be/N_jXuEWiaLY  Timestamps: 0:00 - Hello there! 3:20 - Teasing the Emperor scene. 8:17 - Augmented hexatonic collection of pitches (characteristic chord type in ESB, 4-20). 11:26 - Yanked out portion of the cue, R5P3 "End Fix" (orchestrated by Angela Morley). 15:05 - Instrumental introduction to Han & Leia's theme. A distinctive treatment of Lydian mode (descending pentachords -- the 5th down to the tonic). 18:50 - The descending Lydian figure is a Williams hallmark of his 80s-ish scores. Examples from E.T. (1993) and ALWAYS (1989). 25:05 - On Han being a "scoundrel." 29:01 - What do you think of the comparisons to Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto? 38:35 - Listening to other love themes: El Cid (Miklós Rózsa), Adagio from Spartacus (Khachaturian) 51:48 - First truly functional chord in a while. Enharmonicism. 57:27 - Throwing down the gauntlet. 58:23 - John Williams holding back on the low bass note until a beat or two after the onset of a theme. 1:00:11 - Proud lineage of musical love scenes that are interrupted. 1:08:50 - Han Solo and the Princess concert arrangements (there are at least 3!) 1:14:56 - Sneak peek of changes to the thematic catalogue. 1:29:36 - Dom shoutout 1. 1:38:21 - Brittle, rocky xylophone. 1:45:39 - 90's Emperor/Energizer Bunny commercial. 1:46:26 - Fascinating musical sequence during the Emperor's first appearance. 1:55:44 - Dom shoutout 2. 1:58:09 - ESB editor Paul Hirsch on temp tracking this scene with Bartók. 2:06:28 - Comparing Ian McDiarmid to the original emperor's voice from 1980 (Clive Revell) 2:13:19 - Dark Side motif. 2:25:00 - SWMM Questionnaire Things to Check Out: Dominic Sewell's analysis of cue 5M4/6M1 "Solo and the Princess" - https://youtu.be/Nxe_rd2GVPY Pitch Class Set Calculator: https://www.mta.ca/pc-set/calculator/pc_calculate.html E.T. excerpt (queued up to the descending Lydian line)- https://youtube.com/watch?v=P7CyzH6R7f4&t=721 "Pete in Heaven" from Always (John Williams) - https://youtu.be/z8v1OEIkp3U Predatory Romance in Harrison Ford Movies (Pop Culture Detective on YouTube) - https://youtu.be/wWoP8VpbpYI Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto - https://youtu.be/QCKL95HAdQ8 Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet - https://youtu.be/finYYXkdYmA "Fossils" from Carnival of the Animals (Saint-Saens) - https://youtu.be/bcAJpsWWuIY Béla Bartók Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta - https://youtu.be/ymqRNY4K4NA?t=1016 Andrew Norman "Play" - Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Cristian Măcelaru https://youtu.be/Dc9rYygfwNI?t=1316 Love Scene from El Cid (by Miklós Rózsa)- https://youtu.be/91SunNLBDoI?t=303 Emperor Palpatine Energizer Bunny commercial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxafIhYFOr0 Adagio from Spartacus (by Khachaturian) - https://youtu.be/LZLMKkEGFRo?t=133 The Red Violin OST (by John Corigliano) - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6Oa6vj9pJz7IPAC5yVw666aU-OReTM1K The Empire Strikes Back - the original Emperor scene from 1980 - https://youtu.be/rKtciRCVpFE Cues: Tail end of 5M3 "Yoda's Entrance" 5M4/6M1 "Solo And The Princess" Musical Themes: 11a. This week's Patreon request takes Tread Perilously 20 minutes into the future with an episode of Max Headroom called "Academy." When a group of zippers hijack the Network 23 signal one too many times, Bryce is charged with finding the miscreants so severe penalties can be brought against them. But already knowing the truth, he redirects the location trace to Blank Reg's RV. He assumes the televised judicial system will soon drop the charges as it is clear Reg lacks the ability to zip the network, but a more obscure law makes Reg look guiltier than sin. Will Max and Edison Carter convince Bryce to come clean or will Reg end up reduced to discrete atoms? Justin falls in love with the "twenty minutes into the future" tagline. Erik gets into the nitty-gritty of how Max came to be in reality and in the fiction of the series. Justin defends the cast of Super Mario Bros. He also picks fights with several public figures. Erik revels in the presence of W. Morgan Sheppard. The pair debate the "too much" elements of Twin Peaks's second season. Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Episode IX get re-litigated -- well, a little bit, anyway. The "Max Headroom Incident" gets discussed and the ghost of F. Lee Bailey haunts the Tread Perilously virtual studio.

It's no secret that the Star Wars sequel trilogy is often criticized by fans. However, the Last Jedi aka Episode VII, is by far one of the most hated movies within the Star Wars film series (joining the likes of Episode IX). Yet, there are some people out there that consider the Last Jedi to be a masterpiece despite it's many many MANY FLAWS! Also was ist nun los mit Star Wars? Was hätte sein können? Was wird kommen?

In Star Wars canon, this is widely considered the best of them all (Episode IX hasn't hit the screens as of this posting, but fat chance!)  This is the sequel that pushed the boundaries and put our beloved heroes through the wringer.  And carbonite.  Empire rules, and it's almost blasphemous to make fun of it.  Well, not as blasphemous as Greedo shooting first, but anyway this commentary is done with respect, love, anger, fear, aggression, all that good stuff.  Get ready to jump into comedy hyperspace!  Unless Chewie screwed up again.

he Disney-produced Star Wars sequels had a great start with the smash box-office success of J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens in 2015, then the wildly divisive follow-up The Last Jedi - written and directed by Rian Johnson - a couple year later. However, it all crashed and burned with universally maligned The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, directed again by TFA's J.J. Abrams. But did it have to be that way? As many fans know, filmmaker Colin Trevorrow was hired to co-write and direct STAR WARS EPISODE 9 at the same time the Abrams and Johnson were hired to direct their respective films. However, obviously things didn't go to plan. So what did Trevorrow's Episode IX look like? Would it have been an improvement on Abrams' failure? Concept art from Trevorrow's take on Episode IX, a The Clone Wars trailer, Star Wars Resistance comes to an end, and more! Here's what happens: We finally get on track for Who Got What? and it was the best of times. Some of the concept art for Trevorrow's Duel of the Fates (ep. IX) is really cool. Like, REALLY cool. You're not going to believe this, but there was more drama over the Obi-Wan live-action series. Don't worry, everything is fine. But geez. The trailer for the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is DOPE. Even if you haven't been into the show before now you should definitely check this upcoming final season out when it hits. Our friends at Kessel Run Transmissions say the Star Wars Rebels sequel will be happening this winter, and we'll learn more after the season finale of The Clone Wars. That's gonna be pretty sweet. The much-hyped Star Wars Resistance aired its series finale, The Escape. What did you think of the show? Overall we liked it, but maybe they could have done more with the characters. Season 1 of the Canon Cantina was focused on exploring the journey of Luke Skywalker through both Canon and Legends materials. We sought to explore the question "who IS Luke Skywalker?" by comparing the two different storylines in the time leading up to Episode IX. Now that the Skywalker Saga is complete, we have expanded the scope of the show beyond Luke Skywalker. Everything after our Force Awakens-style soft reboot can be found in Season 2. Cheers, and may the Force be with you! ___________________________________ Do you have to wait until tonight (or later!) to watch The Mandalorian? Help pass the time with this new episode featuring our last Mandalorian predictions for the first season, along with more Rise of Skywalker discussion. Oh yeah... and we start off with the weirdest Legend of Luke Skywalker so far. May the Force be with you. __________________________________________ Join Star Wars fanatics, Mike and Jesse each episode as we breakdown the character & development of Luke Skywalker throughout both Legends and the Disney canon. We'll do our best to connect the dots of Luke's adventures through Legends/the old Expanded Universe to find out how he differs from the current canon hero, and debate which version would make The Last Jedi better.
