In this episode, Alex Heeney digs into Celine Song's Materialists, a film about Lucy, a matchmaker struggling with her own love triangle. Will Lucy (Dakota Johnson) choose love — in the form of her poor ex John (Chris Evans) — or money with eligible bachelor Harry (Pedro Pascal)? And can love and money even co-exist? With its charming cast, elegant blocking, and standout sound design, Materialists could have been a sharp, class-conscious rom-com. But for all its promise, it ends up skimming the surface. You will hear: What works well in the film, including the visual storytelling and sound design Where the film struggles, especially with its thin characterization and reluctance to fully engage with class and money Comparisons with other works, such as Gossip Girl (2007–2012) and Patricia Rozema's Mansfield Park (1999), that tackle similar themes with more depth Links Mentioned:

Send us a textMay 2025 marked a historic turning point for theatrical exhibition with box office numbers approaching $1 billion on just 128 releases – half the number required to hit that mark pre-pandemic. This stunning 75% year-over-year growth signals what could be the full recovery of theatrical moviegoing after years of uncertainty.Behind this remarkable surge were five films crossing the $100 million domestic threshold, led by Disney's surprisingly dominant "Lilo and Stitch" ($260M domestic) and Marvel's "Thunderbolts" ($180M). Perhaps most unexpected was "Final Destination: Bloodlines," the sixth entry in a long-dormant franchise that managed to earn over $200M worldwide – proving audiences still hunger for inventive horror when executed properly. The hosts dissect several recent releases, finding much to be desired in "Bring Her Back," the sophomore effort from the directors behind A24's "Talk to Me." Despite strong performances and effective sound design, the film's telegraphed storytelling undermines its potential for genuine suspense. Similarly disappointing is Guy Ritchie's "Fountain of Youth," described as a "dollar store version of Indiana Jones and National Treasure" despite its star-studded cast. Netflix's "Fear Street: Prom Queen" fares better as a fun but lesser entry in the franchise, while HBO's tech billionaire satire "Mountainhead" delivers mixed results.Looking forward, excitement builds for Wes Anderson's "The Phoenician Scheme," the Ana de Armas-led "Ballerina," and Ty West's vampire film premiering at Tribeca. The hosts also share news of Luca Guadagnino directing an AI business comedy and James Cameron tackling a dark fantasy project called "The Devils." These developments, alongside the emergence of AI-themed narratives as a distinct subgenre, reflect how cinema continues to process our collective anxieties and fascinations.Catch Alex and Max each week as they explore theatrical releases, streaming debuts, and industry developments with insight and enthusiasm that reminds us why movies still matter.Support the show

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Luca Guadagnino returns to the cinema following the roaring success of Challengers with an adaptation of William Burroughs' auto-fictional experimental novel of love in the age of intensely felt internalised homophobia, Queer. Beyond the film continuing the trend for gorgeously dirty white linen suits on film, Queer is a masterful, impressionistic exploration of living in bodies and with desires that are tangled up with socially shaped self-loathing and the loneliness that follows from fear. There is so much to unfold! If you think Projector Pod is the kind of thing you'd like to support, you can find our Patreon here.

He explains that his interest in psychology, filmmaking, and literature helps inform his approach to queer narratives so of course I ask him who his favorite queer authors and filmmakers are. He explains why he praised Guadagnino's Queer in his Gay and Lesbian Review article, and how the film nicely portrays the themes of loneliness and unrequited love. As a William S. Burroughs expert (the author of the Queer novel), Brian compares/contrasts the novel and the film adaptation. Then, Brian discusses his new novel Julian's Debut and explains how its premise is inspired by real-life interactions. He then explains the ethical implications of memoir writing and autofiction which is a genre that blurs the lines between reality and fabrication. Brian then gets into the legacy of author Edmund White, whose memoir he adapted into a graphic novel. This episode highlights the complexities of being a gay writer in the publishing industry. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios has been in the news a lot during the last week with varying topics. We'll break them down, but first some bullet points.- Thunderbolts* took the top spot at the box office with a $76 million domestic opening and a global total of $162.1 million. For those CinemaScore fans, the movie is sitting at an A-. SPOILER ALERT: The studio also flipped the title of the movie based on the events that occur within it and the film is now being marketed as The New Avengers - the big reveal of what the asterisk stood for. Marvel Comics even joined in with this gag, revealing today that a previously announced new series called New Thunderbolts* is actually going to be called The New Avengers.- Jeremy Renner was interviewed by podcast High Performance about his new memoir “My Next Breath,” and revealed Marvel offered him a role in a second season of Hawkeye, but only offered half the salary he received in season one.- The Hollywood Reporter has received information from sources saying that Ryan Reynolds is in the early stages of developing a new Deadpool movie that would feature X-Men characters with Deadpool potentially in a supporting role.- Lastly, Fantastic Four: First Steps Director Matt Shakman revealed that voice actor Matthew Wood is doing the voice work for the role of HERBIE in the film. In his comments, Trump announced he wants to institute a 100% tariff on movies coming into the United States and that are produced in foreign countries. It is unclear how this would be implemented at this time as films are not goods. However, many films take advantage of tax incentives offered by states and countries to film in their locations and these could be affected. In an already turbulent time for Hollywood, what could this mean for the future?FX has officially confirmed an upcoming season two of its Emmy-award winning series Shogun. Rock, DC Studios' action war movie that was to shoot this summer, will no longer move forward at the current schedule due to location shooting issues. The film, set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and star Colin Farrell, apparently needs to be shot during the summer and not the winter, which held up production. Insiders tell the Hollywood Reporter that the project is not necessarily going away however, and would be reassessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026.Chris Hemsworth has been cast to star in Subversion, a submarine thriller that Patrick Vollrath will direct for Amazon MGM.Star Wars: The Last Order, is a newly-announced novel, written by Kwame Mbalia and will look at Finn and Jannah's mission to save more children from the First Order. It's game, set and love matches in our Yosra's pick of 2024 films, as she, Mick and Hannah watch Luca Guadagnino's sweaty tale of rivalry on and off the courts. Starring Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist, it was a bit of a critics' darling and a box-office champ. But does that mean a flying sausage for our three women? Or will they take issue with the plot, the characters, the tennis, the depiction of women (woman), and the Golden Globe-winning score? Ooh, it's a mystery. Learn more about your ad choices.

Today on Script Apart – one of cinema's great monster movies. The terrifying creature at this movie's core, though, didn't have trailing tentacles, bloodshot eyes or reptilian skin. Instead of sharp teeth, it wore a sharp suit – Valentino pinstripe, perfectly pressed. This monster owned a gleaming Rolex, lived in an elegant condo and smiled politely through slap-up dinners with his fellow Wall Street sleazes. At night, he stalked the streets of New York, maiming sex workers and murdering the homeless, to a soundtrack of Huey Lewis and the News. And twenty-five years on, he's arguably more fearsome than ever in his relevance to our own world. Yes, joining Al Horner for a metaphorical reservation at Dorsia this week is author, actress and screenwriter Guinevere Turner, who co-wrote American Psycho. Guinevere teamed up with someone who would become a long-time collaborator, director Mary Harron, to adapt Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel about a deranged investment banker named Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale). In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Guinevere tells me about the parts of herself she perhaps threaded into her and Mary's version of the story, either consciously or subconsciously – as revealed in her 2023 memoir, When The World Didn't End, she grew up in a cult that promised followers they'd be whisked off in a spaceship to Venus, and there's cult-like framing of money and materialism in American Psycho that perhaps was no accident. We get into her and Mary's treatment of Patrick as an “alien who's crash-landed to Earth,” learning to fit in through the pop culture he engages in. You'll also hear about Bret Easton Ellis's version of the film that ended with Patrick Bateman singing a musical tribute to New York, and what Guinevere's take is on the upcoming remake, reported to be directed by Luca Guadagnino. For more from Guinevere, whose other work includes The L Word, Go Fish, The Notorious Bettie Page and 2018's Charlie Says, pick up When The World Didn't End, which is a great read – and head to our Patreon page! Jake Jensen Stuns Audiences with Riveting Performance in "Challengers""Challengers" showcased Jake Jensen's remarkable performance as Finn Larsen, a character who brought the fierce competition of professional tennis to life.Actor, producer, and host Jake Jensen recently captivated audiences with his portrayal of Finn Larsen in the film "Challengers." Directed by Luca Guadagnino and featuring Zendaya and Josh O'Connor, Jensen delivered a compelling performance in this intense sports drama. In "Challengers," Jake Jensen played Finn Larsen, a trash-talking Scandinavian professional tennis player on the Challengers circuit. The film delved into the gritty and competitive world of lower-tier tennis tournaments, where players fought tooth and nail for ranking points and minimal prize money, all in hopes of advancing to more prestigious competitions. In a pivotal locker room scene, Finn sarcastically congratulated fellow player Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor) with a biting, "Good match, Zweig," before turning his taunts towards another player, Gonzu (Alex Bancila). Finn's mockery sent Gonzu into a fit of rage, smashing his racket against a bench, vividly portraying the cutthroat atmosphere of the Challenger tour. This scene underscored the lengths players like Finn went to unsettle their opponents, both on and off the court.Jake Jensen's portrayal of Finn Larsen captured the raw determination and psychological warfare inherent in professional tennis. Finn was a character who thrived on getting under his opponent's skin, showcasing Jensen's ability to embody complex and dynamic roles.About Jake Jensen:Jake Jensen is a multifaceted talent, known for his work as an actor, producer, and host. With a career spanning various media, Jensen has made significant strides in the entertainment industry. His projects have included collaborations with world-renowned photographer Fabian Di Corcia and numerous other notable figures. To View This Episode- https://youtu.be/3MFRs3oHWrA#philfriedrich #whoknewinthemoment #Jakejensen #Challengers #zendaya #actor #podcast

But does making tennis interesting deserve an Oscar nomination? Listen and find out what the guys think.
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesLast week, during an interview with Brazilian pop culture and media YouTube outlet, Omelete, to promote their new film, The Electric State, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars directors, Joe and Anthony Russo offered insights on how the upcoming pair Avengers of films differ from their previous multi-phase, saga-concluders: Infinity War and Endgame; describing the duology as a “new beginning.” Joe Russo went on to reiterate the real motivation for the creative duo returning to the franchise after leaving on an all-time high more than 5 years ago. In a double dose of DC casting news, sitcom vet Jason Ritter has joined the cast of Lanterns in a recurring role as Billy Macon, a ‘good-looking charmer who does his father's bidding, clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose.' Elsewhere, The Penguin actor, Colin Farrell has entered negotiations to replace Daniel Craig as the titular sergeant of Luca Guadagnino's Word War II film, Sgt. Rock.Despite the release of several new genre films, last weekend's domestic box office was notably slow – at an approximate $54 million total, sluggish enough to earn the title of 2025's worst box office thus far. Paramount's R-rated action comedy, Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid, took the top spot with $8.7 million, slightly below expectations. Meanwhile, Mickey 17 suffered a 60% drop in its second weekend, barely managing to stave off Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller, Black Bag, with hauls of $7.51 and $7.5 million, respectively. After more than a year of speculation, Apple TV+ has officially ordered a fourth season of its Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso. The pickup comes after co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis closed a deal to reprise his role as the titular character. Disney has released the first official trailer for body swap comedy reunion sequel Freakier Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The film hits theaters on August 8th, 22 years after the original. Conan O'Brien, who hosted the 97th Oscars telecast on March 2, has agreed to return and host the 98th Oscars telecast on March 15, 2026, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday. CBS has also announced that comedian Nikki Glaser will return in 2026 to host the 83rd annual Golden Globes.More than a year after Warner Bros. shelved Coyote vs. Acme for tax incentives, independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment is reportedly nearing a deal to acquire the film for around $50 million. Ketchup recently handled the theatrical release of The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which has earned $3.9 million since its March 14 debut.Columbia Pictures is plotting a new Starship Troopers movie, tasking District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story by Robert A. Heinlein. The Hollywood Reporter has learned “zero progress” has been made on Saw XI since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024. Speaking on the project, Melton said “The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page.” A24 has released the first trailer for romantic feature film Materialists starring Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson. The film hits theaters on June 13th. Netflix has released the first trailer for Adam Sandler-led sequel Happy Gilmore 2. The film begins streaming on July 25th. Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Netflix's Cujo, a remake of Stephen King's classic horror novel about a vicious St. Bernard. The project is still in early development, and sources say Aronofsky has yet to hold creative discussions with Netflix. If the deal goes through, this would be his first feature film for a streaming platform.

This week, we're skipping the Oscars and talking about 2024's "Challengers." We discuss director Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya, friendship, tennis and sex comedies. Listen now.
On this episode of Paid in Puke, we're all over Luca Guadagnino's 2024 frenetic sports drama, Challengers, starring Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist. It's about ambition, failed dreams, jealousy, friendship, a love triangle, and also tennis! This is a perfect script brought to screen by a man who says he thinks tennis is boring. Though Amy (our resident tennis fan) finds a couple of minor tennis-related hot probs, this thing is a banger through and through. We get into all sorts of topics including whether or not Patrick and Art have feelings for each other, how Tashi's bitterness manifests in some understandable, but also unforgivable ways, the sexiness of the leads, and just what exactly happens at the end. Grab and banana and COME ON!!!
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesBrad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation for Marvel Studios, caught the attention of Defenders fans when he shared that Marvel is exploring bringing back the rest of the Netflix Defenders actors and characters; Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and Finn Jones as Iron Fist. Winderbaum indicated that the studio is excited about this possibility, but there are a lot of variables that will determine the success of pulling it all together. While this is fun to hear as fans, other Marvel TV is taking a pause. Though sources say these projects were never officially greenlit, Deadline reports that Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. are not currently being developed. This is mostly being attributed to Marvel's shift to traditionally-run television shows. But in confirmed news, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jon Bernthal will star in a Marvel Studios Special Presentation featuring The Punisher that will air in 2026 alongside the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. On Monday we were treated to the surprise drop of the full Andor season 2 trailer from Lucasfilm. In a very un-Star Wars-like fashion, the high octane footage is set to The Revolution Starts Now by Steve Earle and reminds viewers of how acclaimed the first season was. The drop shared more interesting news; the 12-episode season will be dropped in increments of three episodes at a time for four weeks. Phew!DC's duo of James Gunn and Peter Safran took time to have a press event last Friday where they updated us, the people, on where things are going with DC Studios. It's been just over two years since the big film and television overhaul with DC was announced, with Gunn and Safran taking control of the franchise. Gunn reiterated their desire to bring new stories to life with these characters. The updates included the following: Supergirl is halfway through production, Lanterns began production last week, Clayface will be directed by James Watkins and is eyeing a fall 2026 release, Sgt. Rock, still being directed by Luca Guadagnino, no longer has Daniel Craig attached and is looking for its new star, and the animated Robin movie, Dynamic Duo, is in pre-production. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, Gunn had some comments on The Brave and The Bold that some are taking as confirmation that Robert Pattinson will not be the DCU's Batman, with the filmmaker saying,“It's certainly not the plan.” And Safran added, “And we love him, but we've got to introduce a Batman into the DCU. That's imperative. And so that's the plan with The Brave and the Bold.”The James Bond movie franchise is going through a shake up, with Amazon MGM Studios and Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli forming a new joint venture to house the movie property's intellectual property rights. Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon MGM Studios will gain creative control of the James Bond franchise, while Wilson and Broccoli will remain co-owners of the 60-year-old property. In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM. Since the MGM acquisition, Amazon has held rights to distribute all of the James Bond films, and following completion of the joint venture transaction will control the creative on future productions.Season two of The Last of Us finally has a premiere date. The seven-episode season of the drama will debut April 13 on HBO. That means the season will complete its run in late May, just under the wire for Emmy eligibility this year.Jack O'Connell and Delroy Lindo, who will both star in Ryan Coolger's upcoming film Sinners, have joined the cast of Legendary's upcoming Monsterverse sequel to Godzilla x Kong.Kitao Sakurai, perhaps best known for writing, directing and exec producing The Eric Andre Show, has been tapped to direct Street Fighter, Legendary Entertainment's feature adaptation of the classic video game from Capcom.
CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence.Violet Lucca, the author of the new monograph David Cronenberg: Clinical Trials, returns to the podcast from Brooklyn to discuss the book and his controversial 1991 adaptation of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch starring Peter Weller and Judy Davis, filmed in Toronto standing in for 50s New York and Morocco, recreated by Cronenberg's longtime production designer Carol Spier in a former General Electric plant in Toronto's west end.We discuss Cronenberg's lifelong connection to Canadian cinema and the city of Toronto with digressions on Videodrome, The Dead Zone and The Fly before grappling with Naked Lunch, which is less of a literal film version of the novel and more a meditation about the life of Burroughs and what it is to be an artist in general. We also discuss Cronenberg's cinematic explorations of paranoia and conspiracy theories, and his relationship to the queer artistic community in Canada reflected across his career, even if he's always identified himself as a heterosexual man.And we (briefly) contrast Naked Lunch with the new Burroughs cinematic adaptation, Luca Guadagnino's Queer starring Daniel Craig, which we feel misses the boat on how to adapt Burroughs for the screen.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Hello everyone and welcome to an all new episode of Some Like It Scott! On this episode, we teleport you back to December, when the two Scotts recorded an episode talking all about the Lord of the Rings franchise's return to animation - and first foray into anime - with the Kenji Kamiyama-directed, LORD OF THE RINGS: WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM. After discussing whether this adaptation lives up to the live action entries, the English voice cast including the likes of Brian Cox, and the world-building of Middle Earth, the co-hosts turn their attention to news of a live action remake of TANGLED, as well as Luca Guadagnino taking a pass at a “new adaptation” (definitely not a remake) of AMERICAN PSYCHO with Austin Butler in the lead role.
