On today's edition, Luca Guadagnino, Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Nora Garrett join NYFF programmer Rachel Rosen at a press conference to discuss this year's Opening Night selection After the Hunt. The 63rd New York Film Festival and Opening Night are presented in partnership with Rolex. On episode 308 of the AwardsWatch podcast, Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello look at the competitive International Feature Film contenders and provide a preview of some of the major titles coming to the 63rd New York Film Festival. With more than 70 countries having submitted films for the International Feature Film Oscar so far, now was a good time to look at the frontrunners like Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident and The Secret Agent, the NEON dominance of them and how many can really make the final five. We also look outside of those Cannes winners for titles that could pique the voters' interest as uniquely named films have done in the past. Next up is the preview of the 63rd New York Film Festival, which begins this Friday with the opening film, Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt. After taking a critical drubbing at its Venice bow, we examine if it can rebound here in the states. Two world premieres will be a part of the festival including Anemone, the feature debut from Ronan Day-Lewis starring his three-time Oscar-winning father Daniel Day-Lewis, back on screen for the first time since 2017's Phantom Thread. At the time of recording both Sophia and I had just seen the film but were under embargo (until September 28). The Venice Golden Lion winner Father Mother Sister Brother from Jim Jarmusch is the Centerpiece film and then Bradley Cooper's third directorial effort, the stand-up comedian story Is This Thing On? will close the festival. Could this be Cooper's attempt to rein it in and silence some of the critics of Maestro? This podcast runs 1h07m. We will be back next week with xxxxx Till then, let's get into it. Get your handkerchiefs out and wipe the sweat off your brow, we're back with another dose of that sweet, sweaty, GoodTrash. This week, we are discussing the second film Luca Guadagnino released in 2024, Queer. The Daniel Craig-led romantic drama travelogue is inspired by William S. Burroughs work. We explore art and artist, William Tell, Daniel Craig, and much, much more as we attempt to unpack this surreal experience. Join us as we analyze Queer.

* Recorded in the Spring **In which Kid 1 joins me in reviewing CHALLENGERS (2024), from director Luca Guadagnino with screenplay credits to Justin Kuritzkes. The film is a steamy romantic sports drama centered on Tashi (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy turned coach, who orchestrates a high-stakes match between her husband, Art (Mike Faist), a struggling champion, and his former best friend and her ex-boyfriend, Patrick (Josh O'Connor). As the two men face off on the court, the film flashes back through their intertwined past, revealing a complex web of ambition, betrayal, and intense rivalry fueled by their shared attraction to Tashi. The narrative culminates in a climactic final match where the lines between sport, desire, and personal history blur, leaving the audience to question who truly wins. The film clocks in at 2 h and 11 m, is rated R and is currently streaming on Prime Video and MGM+. The 82nd Venice Film Festival got underway with a constellation of stars on its red carpet, as Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield attended the premiere of "After the Hunt", directed by Luca Guadagnino. Film critic Emma Jones tells us why she was impressed by Yorgos Lanthimos's "Bugonia", starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemmons. We also discuss the French-made political intrigue "The Wizard of the Kremlin", with Jude Law playing Vladimir Putin himself. And politics were ever-present at this year's Mostra, with Venice4Palestine protests and Kaouther Ben Hania's powerful docu-drama "The Voice of Hind Rajab", which is set in Gaza.

Teraz przyszła pora na „Po polowaniu” – najnowszy obraz włoskiego filmowca-intelektualisty, w którym główne role grają Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg i Ayo Edebiri. In this episode, Masie & Stuart finally wrap up their pride month duo after a moving hiatus by digging up the 2017 queer coming of age film Call Me By Your Name. A critical and financial success upon its release, Luca Guadagnino and James Ivory's film adaptation of Andre Aciman's novel has garnered a much messier reputation in the eight years since due to its age gap romance and the unfortunate presence of actor Armie Hammer. Our hosts explore the film's beautiful Italian vistas and often great performances and cinematography, while trying to untangle and dissect the many troubling elements tarnishing this film's ongoing legacy in gay cinema. Tra gli autori e le opere citate: Philip K. Dick, William Burroughs, Paura e Delirio a Las Vegas di Hunter Thompson, Queer di Luca Guadagnino, Gli interessi in comune di Vanni Santoni, Mad Men, Enter The Void di Gaspar Noe e le pagine finali di Siddartha di Herman Hesse.

On episode 299 of the AwardsWatch Podcast, it's an all editors show as Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello look at the wealth of fall festival lineup announcements that came in this week from Venice and Toronto. In the pod, the trio start with Venice, which will be the kickoff of no less than three Netflix titles: Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Noah Baumbach's Jay Kelly and the return of Kathryn Bigelow with A House of Dynamite. With a few other Netflix titles rolling around, we talk about the impact of these three titles starting off here and where else we'll see them this season. Yorgos Lanthimos' newest collab with Emma Stone, Bugonia, will also bow at Venice, leaving Focus Features' other top title Hamnet, rip for Telluride. Mona Fastvold, fresh off The Brutalist last year (with her partner Brady Corbet), has The Testament of Ann Lee with Amanda Seyfried, something has all of us buzzing. Then there's The Smashing Machine from Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. We also dig into the Out of Competition titles, specifically Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt, which has some internet folks thinking it means something more than it does. Onto TIFF, always the most helpful as specific designations are listed for each film, we talk about Rental Family starring Brendan Fraser, Sydney Sweeney in Christy and where the big Cannes winners from NEON and MUBI, like Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sirāt and Sound of Falling landed. Theme is: summer movies. ANDREW GARFIELD IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! Hackaw Ridge Full Movie Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects LIQUID IV: Visit http://www.liquidiv.com & use Promo Code: REJECTS With Andrew Garfield starring in Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt later this year, Andrew & John give their HACKSAW RIDGE Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis & Spoiler Review!! Andrew Gordon and John Humphrey take on Mel Gibson's powerful WWII biographical drama Hacksaw Ridge (2016), spotlighting one of the most heroic and unlikely war stories in American history. Based on the true story of Desmond Doss, a devout Seventh-day Adventist and conscientious objector who saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa without ever carrying a weapon, the film delivers intense battlefield realism and a moving portrait of faith and courage. Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, Tick, Tick... Boom!) stars as Desmond Doss in an Oscar-nominated performance, capturing the medic's unwavering pacifism and quiet strength. Teresa Palmer (Lights Out, Warm Bodies) plays Dorothy Schutte, Desmond's devoted wife, while Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings) portrays his war-haunted father, Tom Doss. Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under, Muriel's Wedding) plays Bertha Doss, Desmond's supportive mother. The film also stars Sam Worthington (Avatar, Terminator Salvation) as Captain Glover, Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, True Detective) in a memorable dramatic turn as the tough Sergeant Howell, and Luke Bracey (Point Break, Elvis) as Smitty, Desmond's fellow soldier and eventual ally. From harrowing basic training confrontations to the unflinching combat at Hacksaw Ridge itself, the movie features unforgettable scenes like Desmond's night-long rescue of the wounded, his prayerful mantra “Please Lord, help me get one more,” and the climactic cliffside descent with wounded soldiers in tow. With brutal intensity & spiritual depth, Hacksaw Ridge is both a visceral war film and a moving testament to nonviolence and conviction.
In this episode, Alex Heeney digs into Celine Song's Materialists, a film about Lucy, a matchmaker struggling with her own love triangle. Will Lucy (Dakota Johnson) choose love — in the form of her poor ex John (Chris Evans) — or money with eligible bachelor Harry (Pedro Pascal)? And can love and money even co-exist? With its charming cast, elegant blocking, and standout sound design, Materialists could have been a sharp, class-conscious rom-com. But for all its promise, it ends up skimming the surface. You will hear: What works well in the film, including the visual storytelling and sound design Where the film struggles, especially with its thin characterization and reluctance to fully engage with class and money Comparisons with other works, such as Gossip Girl (2007–2012) and Patricia Rozema's Mansfield Park (1999), that tackle similar themes with more depth Links Mentioned:
I want to podcast with you. Without speaking. On this episode of Deep Cut Upkeep we step into 1950s Mexico City and dive into the lush world of Luca Guadagnino's Queer. Wilson expands more on his love for the film and why it topped his 2024 film list. Eli talks about the narrative constraints of this (bio)pic about William S. Burroughs. Ben draws links between Queer and Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Together, we talk about performance, Guadagnino's eye for style, debate that Ayahuasca sequence, and end the episode with a quick round of Luca Guadagnino power rankings. Send us a textMay 2025 marked a historic turning point for theatrical exhibition with box office numbers approaching $1 billion on just 128 releases – half the number required to hit that mark pre-pandemic. This stunning 75% year-over-year growth signals what could be the full recovery of theatrical moviegoing after years of uncertainty.Behind this remarkable surge were five films crossing the $100 million domestic threshold, led by Disney's surprisingly dominant "Lilo and Stitch" ($260M domestic) and Marvel's "Thunderbolts" ($180M). Perhaps most unexpected was "Final Destination: Bloodlines," the sixth entry in a long-dormant franchise that managed to earn over $200M worldwide – proving audiences still hunger for inventive horror when executed properly. The hosts dissect several recent releases, finding much to be desired in "Bring Her Back," the sophomore effort from the directors behind A24's "Talk to Me." Despite strong performances and effective sound design, the film's telegraphed storytelling undermines its potential for genuine suspense. Similarly disappointing is Guy Ritchie's "Fountain of Youth," described as a "dollar store version of Indiana Jones and National Treasure" despite its star-studded cast. Netflix's "Fear Street: Prom Queen" fares better as a fun but lesser entry in the franchise, while HBO's tech billionaire satire "Mountainhead" delivers mixed results.Looking forward, excitement builds for Wes Anderson's "The Phoenician Scheme," the Ana de Armas-led "Ballerina," and Ty West's vampire film premiering at Tribeca. The hosts also share news of Luca Guadagnino directing an AI business comedy and James Cameron tackling a dark fantasy project called "The Devils." These developments, alongside the emergence of AI-themed narratives as a distinct subgenre, reflect how cinema continues to process our collective anxieties and fascinations.Catch Alex and Max each week as they explore theatrical releases, streaming debuts, and industry developments with insight and enthusiasm that reminds us why movies still matter.Support the show

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios has been in the news a lot during the last week with varying topics. We'll break them down, but first some bullet points.- Thunderbolts* took the top spot at the box office with a $76 million domestic opening and a global total of $162.1 million. For those CinemaScore fans, the movie is sitting at an A-. SPOILER ALERT: The studio also flipped the title of the movie based on the events that occur within it and the film is now being marketed as The New Avengers - the big reveal of what the asterisk stood for. Marvel Comics even joined in with this gag, revealing today that a previously announced new series called New Thunderbolts* is actually going to be called The New Avengers.- Jeremy Renner was interviewed by podcast High Performance about his new memoir “My Next Breath,” and revealed Marvel offered him a role in a second season of Hawkeye, but only offered half the salary he received in season one.- The Hollywood Reporter has received information from sources saying that Ryan Reynolds is in the early stages of developing a new Deadpool movie that would feature X-Men characters with Deadpool potentially in a supporting role.- Lastly, Fantastic Four: First Steps Director Matt Shakman revealed that voice actor Matthew Wood is doing the voice work for the role of HERBIE in the film. Wood is known for voicing General Grievous and has worked in sound for Lucasfilm and Disney for many years.Perhaps the biggest story to hit Hollywood since the writers/actors strikes a few years ago, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform on Monday that he aims to start including Hollywood in his tariff plan. In his comments, Trump announced he wants to institute a 100% tariff on movies coming into the United States and that are produced in foreign countries. It is unclear how this would be implemented at this time as films are not goods. However, many films take advantage of tax incentives offered by states and countries to film in their locations and these could be affected. In an already turbulent time for Hollywood, what could this mean for the future?FX has officially confirmed an upcoming season two of its Emmy-award winning series Shogun. The series co-creators and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks recently wrapped a writers room for the coming season which will begin production in January of 2026.Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct Road House 2, the sequel to Amazon MGM Studios' hit action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Rock, DC Studios' action war movie that was to shoot this summer, will no longer move forward at the current schedule due to location shooting issues. The film, set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and star Colin Farrell, apparently needs to be shot during the summer and not the winter, which held up production. Insiders tell the Hollywood Reporter that the project is not necessarily going away however, and would be reassessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026.Chris Hemsworth has been cast to star in Subversion, a submarine thriller that Patrick Vollrath will direct for Amazon MGM.Star Wars: The Last Order, is a newly-announced novel, written by Kwame Mbalia and will look at Finn and Jannah's mission to save more children from the First Order.
