Una vera e propria opera d'arte in movimento, dai registi di “Loving Vincent”.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 106 - TRISTAN OLIVER - CINEMATOGRAPHER In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with cinematographer Tristan Oliver (ISLE OF DOGS, PARANORMAN, CHICKEN RUN). Tristan generously shares his extensive knowledge of stop-motion animation with us, and we spend the majority of the episode learning the ins and outs of shooting 9-inch puppets in a warehouse. Tristan reveals how he (and up to 50+ active units) prepares the lights and cameras for scenes in such a way that doesn't impede upon the work of the animators physically bringing the characters to life, and we discuss the effectiveness of applying the principles and practices of live-action cinematography into the world of animation. In addition to his work in stop-motion animation, Tristan has contributed to live-action projects such as POOR THINGS and the uniquely realized LOVING VINCENT, and he reflects on his experiences in both projects. In the back half of our conversation, Tristan shares how he really felt working with director Wes Anderson on FANTASTIC MR. FOX and ISLE OF DOGS, from learning how to work together on the former to engaging in a battle of wits over the feasibility of deep focus in the latter, and we learn in which films Tristan sees the most of himself. At the end, we close our conversation with an appreciation for the enduring quality of that which is handmade over that which is merely manufactured. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
WE'RE BACK. Okay this one, as usual, is on me (the editor). BUT THIS ONE IS CRAZY YALL. WE'RE BACK WITH A BANGER. Loving Vincent is like stop motion, but harder. Like a hand drawn animation, but way way way harder. Every frame is a painting done in different art styles and giving a glimpse at the potential life of Van Gogh. I DON'T TYPICALLY WRITE THE SYNOPSIS CAUSE MY BRAIN IS BAD BUT THIS ONE WAS TOO COOL TO NOT TALK ABOUT. TUNE IN NERDS.

"The Peasants" had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival after many years of hard work from directors DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman, who had a massive task in front of them to live up to expectations following the Oscar-nominated success of "Loving Vincent." Told with the same meticulous hand-painted techniques as that film, this adaptation of Władysław Reymont's Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name is another huge milestone in the world of animation. The film's composer, Łukasz "L.U.C." Rostkowski, was kind enough to spend a few minutes of his time discussing his work on the film, which is just as beautiful to listen to as the film's visuals are to look at. Please be sure to check out the film when it releases in the U.S. from Sony Pictures Classics on January 26th, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. This week on Good Chem Pod we're taking a good hard look at Vincent Van Gogh through the lens of animated film Loving Vincent. Luckily for crime-obsessed Jenn there's mystery afoot and Ben did all the research to go over the evidence—did Vincent really take his own life? Is all animation stop motion? What's rotoscoping (Chas knows!)? Shout outs and more on this very special episode!Follow us on Instagram @GoodChemPod for episode updates, email us at goodchempod@gmail.com and don't forget to like, rate, and subscribe!
Join John and Vee this week as that dive into experimental animation. Both of these movies are unlike any you've ever seen, and one was created solely with oil paintings. This is: Waking Life, and Loving Vincent
Six years after DK and Hugh Welchman changed animation and cinema forever with their Oscar-nominated, fully painted feature film Loving Vincent, about the life of iconic artist Vincent Van Gogh, the directors have created another incredible, entirely painted animated feature. The Peasants, based on the classic story, just premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. I had the chance to screen the film and speak with the Welchmans about advancing the art form with a completely different story… and how you can own a piece of it.

Sage returns for his next pick as we review Loving Vincent, a movie about Vincent Van Gogh, animated by hand-painted oil paintings. This episode was recorded during the first Friday of March Madness so basketball is a small topic but the main focus of the "post-credit" portion of the podcast. The three talk about the gorgeous animation, the lackluster story, and more! This movie was directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. GD4AM: 87/100 IMDb: 7.8/10 Metacritic: 62/100 RT: 62% In a story depicted in oil-painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends up investigating his final days there. This movie is currently streaming on AMC+. NEXT MOVIE REVIEW: Donnie Brasco (1997) currently available for rent on most VOD platforms.

Welcome painter/muralist/art instructor, and production artist on Loving Vincent, Katherine “Kat” Knutsen to In-Focus Podcast Number 131! Kat was our guest on In-Focus Podcast Number 73. This time, she's speaking with our intrepid Indie Music Host – Scott Bishop about her musical side! Since childhood, Kat has always loved working with her hands. Kat Knutsen survived asthma and brain cancer growing up, which initially led to her nursing studies. She quickly learned it wasn't for her during the clinical portion of her education. While leaving the nursing field, she was serendipitously introduced to the Fine Arts by a friend in sociology class. Kat says, “What drew me to this field was the impact of seeing my soon-to-be painting professor turn magic into a rational process. Something in me lit up!” Kat decided to learn about art and to teach others ways to engage with the art-making process. Her art is now about, “reflecting and interpreting events around me.” Listen in on this conversation as The Artist Index's Indie Music Host – Scott Bishop delves more into Kat's musical life, work, and future ambitions. The In-Focus Podcasts offer you up close and personal conversations with the makers, performers, supporters, and cultural impresarios of this remarkable creative community. A few years prior to the immersive experiences, filmmakers brought Vincent van Gogh's paintings to life in a completely new and different way. In 2017, Loving Vincent was a film made of oil paintings. Today Vincent van Gogh is sort of the model we hold in our minds for a tortured artist. He saw little to no commercial success in his lifetime. He struggled with addiction and mental health. He lived on the fringes of society inspired by other artists and impoverishing himself in his drive to create. He was known to go without food at times because he was spending all of his money on paint. And now we can see his dramatic tale unfold through paint. A team of 125 artists from around the world produced 65,000 paintings to animate the film. Film and animation basically work off the principle that if you have a bunch of pictures played back really quickly it overwhelms the eye. The human eye can not process more than ten pictures or frames per second so it stops looking like a series of pictures and instead looks like one picture that is moving. For Loving Vincent, the artists created an oil painting on canvas for each of the 65,000 frames. They recreated some of his masterpieces telling the dramatic tale through his best known works, in his style and his preferred medium of oils. So how did they do all of this? Well, the storyboard for the movie included a number of Vincent van Gogh's paintings. They recruited a team of 125 well-trained oil painters rather than traditional animators. A bit of the movie was made by rotoscoping which is a technique of basically drawing on top of a frame of film. Actors were filmed in front of a green screen. Editors made a composite shot replacing the green to put Vincent van Gogh's paintings into the background. Now here is the tricky part. After the green screen and all that editing, they put every single frame of the film onto a canvas. It took six years, but they painted 65,000 frames on canvas. Today only about 1000 of the paintings remain because after a frame was painted and photographed for the film, they would typically re-use the canvas. Oil paints take a long time to dry so they would be able to make slight alterations to a wet painting for the next frame. It was a remarkable feat blending old and new media. If you love Vincent, Sunflowers or unappreciated genius, this is the episode for you! In this instalment of Art on Film I speak with Dr Caroline Ruddell about the experimental animation of the 2017 van Gogh biopic. We try to separate fact from fiction and work out why the artist's voice is curiously absent from this beautiful yet flawed film.
This week we're talking about the visually stunning Loving Vincent. A mind blowing 65,000 hand painted frames from 125 artists created this film, but we couldn't help but think the narrative of what those paintings showed was a little lackluster. We wished the same amount of detail that went into the animation was consistent throughout the project, but either way watch it for the paintings alone.Fumbler Score 7.1/10filmfumblers.com for all our links!►Follow us on Twitter! - twitter.com/filmfumblers►Follow us on Twitch! - twitch.tv/filmfumblers►Send comments and movie suggestions to filmfumblers@gmail.com
Raised in Berlin, Charlene Mosley is an Oscar-nominated, San Diego- based fine artist, illustrator, concept artist and muralist. She received her BA in Studio Arts from San Diego State University with a minor in German Studies. Charlene's current work portrays figures and faces of various backgrounds immersed in organic natural elements such as plants and animals. She uses vibrant expressive brushstrokes to bring the paintings to life mainly in oils, watercolors, ink and gouache. She has recently started exploring miniature scenery paintings of her travels as well. Her work expresses her observations of current matters and experiences living in a 21st century media driven society and its relationship to nature. In 2016, Mosley was one of the contributing artists of “Loving Vincent“, the first ever fully-painted, Oscar-Nominated feature film. This opportunity was the artist's first time working in animation in Poland. Creating over 250 frames of the film while in Poland “was life changing in a way, and a motivation to keep pursuing my passion as an independent artist”, notes Mosley. During the promotional touring and award ceremonies following the films debut in the US, Charlene had gotten to work closely with the Royal Talens Art Supply company which resulted in her becoming one of their ambassadors. Charlene works as a freelance, independent artist on several projects, such as murals, private commissions, and book illustrations with clients. Five children's books she has illustrated and a literary novel, have been published in 2018 and 2019; three winning Purple Dragon awards first and second places within their categories. She works closely with various authors and longest so far with Deedee Cummings, the founder of Make A Way Media. As an independent artist, Charlene works with clientele worldwide, shipping out commissioned paintings as big as 12x8 feet. Her large roster of public and private murals include locations such as: San Diego State University, Barrio Logan, La Jolla Shores, Horton Plaza, Venice Beach, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Lake Forest and Shenzhen, China. Her personal artwork is created in her San Diego studio, STUDIO 15, at Art on 30th. Charlene is currently represented by Sparks Gallery in Downtown San Diego, California. The artist is working on her upcoming solo-exhibition "Pollinators" at Sparks Gallery, set to debut May 15th, 5-8pm. The exhibition runs May 15- July 3, 2022. “My work depicts my curiosity of how people connect to nature in a busy technology and mass- media driven world. I paint people I see in everyday life as well as myself and how I see myself interact with and observe my natural surroundings. I love to paint in a combination of expressive line and brushstroke and vibrant colors, with the effect of intriguing the viewer and letting the eye embark on a visually fulfilling journey.” -Mosley

I don't care how many men, women, and children I need to kill to get it.“ Und sein Social Media Team ist auch nicht das Beste. „What is a slap, when an orphan didn't pee in the woods?“ – Jayden Smith Achja, LOVING VINCENT.
